0:00 Welcome back to the nullified take well we've got the tnt takes for you on australian survivor blood versus water week sex and i'm joined here by two very special guests on the podcast that i haven't been able to talk any survivor with this season i'm really excited about it firstly we've got michelle who normally does the amazing race coverage here on the channel with me for those who don't know michelle runs the australian survivor fan page it's i believe 30 000 people in that fan page already now 30 000 in amazing race 20 000 in this one yeah just close enough [Laughter] welcome to the podcast and harry from australian survivor two-time survivor player i always enjoy talking to you harry how have you been yeah good very busy but good been watching a lot of survival which is going to increase again now that us is starting as well but i'm excited for it all it's intense well at least australian survivor has gone down to two episodes a week yeah so it's kind of like we're still watching this evening yeah exactly yeah well i think some people might still be watching the us season as it is right now in australia because it's just probably finishing or it's still airing over there so we may get some people jumping on a little bit later on and for those that are watching the us version i will be talking to dino from

1:20 Survivor south africa on the weekend about that premiere episode so keep an eye out for that as well harry also congratulations on getting married i saw that last year and we haven't spoken since then so congratulations yeah well thank you yeah it was really good i think out of everything it's like to just not have it wrecked by code is pretty amazing so i'm very thankful for that yeah it's well i guess you did it at the exact right time just before you know wa is kind of similar to us here in new zealand you guys have been locked down for so long now it's kind of a little bit of letting it in slowly but surely and just you know getting everybody used to it i guess to the normal way of living yeah it's going gangbusters now but we just yeah we got very lucky and so it was a pretty amazing night and it's like no math no nothing got in the way it's just you know perfect so you can't really ask for any more than that it was the place in australia wa yeah before not quite so much right now so harry you knew you were going to get this question coming on to the podcast jenny kaye has asked who would you play with if you were to play blood versus water would you play with jordan could you do that it's taken two minutes to ask that question jordan would you play survivor

2:42 If it was more than a million dollars pay jordan says she wants the two million when is it war and she'll play i think i think i guess i would probably if jordan's not keen my little sister and my older sister are both huge fans so they have to probably fight each other for who gets to go on they might have to do some challenges or something like that yeah blood verse water no i've got that right she's just not playing with me that's nice you're not good enough harry yeah no michelle what about you would you play a blood versus water themed season oh look you know i like amazing race first that is that is just to be all and end all but if i had to do survivor i wouldn't do blood versus water you have to take care of your person and make sure they're not getting voted out in the alliances and i'd rather play by myself and not have to think about anybody else yeah what about you harry obviously you're someone that has actually been out there and you've played the game twice so you know the mental toll that it takes on you and how difficult it can be to navigate through a game such as this would you even want to play in the blood versus water season i guess for you've you've played twice now so if you were to go back playing once and this is your one opportunity to play would you play a blood versus water season or rather just the normal season no you'd rather go

4:02 The normal one it's way less static gameplay like i find it interesting we could probably go into it but like i just consider it almost like separate games having like 12 people that have duo's rather than just 24 unknowns because all stars itself like because you had those previous relationships that already started to feel a bit like that we have a bit of static relationships so i'd rather go in as much as you possibly could newbies like everyone not knowing each other i'd rather do that again i agree i think for me like if the call comes in you say yes because it's a once in a lifetime opportunity but if you had the opportunity to decide this would be the most difficult season to play and i think we saw a lot of that this week with the relationships out there you know jordy and jesse being very close a big part of this week was sort of dominated by the storyline between jordan and i'm sorry jordan jordy and sam for most of the week and you know a lot of that was due to the fact you know jesse ended up being a bit of collateral damage for something that their brother did in the game here michelle what did you think of jesse as a player since he was the first person that we lost here in the first episode of the week do you feel like he's a player that you'd like to see again and do you think he could have done better if he

5:22 Didn't have geordie in the game there with him yeah definitely he could have done better i think i'm he's not as strong as jordy to me as a player i think he did well having the alliance with sam i wouldn't be excited seeing him again i wouldn't i wouldn't mind but it's not someone that i would hope for i like the kid but harry what do you think about him do you yeah i like the kid you know what do you think do you think that you know jesse he was in a in a tough place here because ultimately in a normal season like you said this is static relationships yeah he probably shoots through he probably wouldn't have been taken out in this spot yeah i think i think he was probably the biggest victim of this formula of the game because they clearly wanted to get rid of his brother and they're just like oh we can't do that so we'll just get rid of him instead i like his gameplay i think that he in particular fits the australian survival like winner style where you just kind of go a little bit under the radar but you are sort of taking control of things like him and sam were controlling where votes were going so it's sort of the classic like it's not the most exciting television but he was playing in the style that you typically win australian survivor whereas his brother's almost like the

6:42 Opposite he's doing the stuff that's like exciting for the viewers but he's maybe slightly lower in gameplay so it'd be very interesting if they have to square off on who gets to play again sometime who they actually take my bet would be on the bigger television oh definitely like jordy would probably take it off him yeah i was very impressed with jesse's gameplay throughout this season he reminded me and you could talk to that a little bit better than myself because you played with this person he reminded me of pierre a lot and how he played because he had sam there with him sam was like the you know the person who was making the godmother that was making the moves and he was kind of sitting back getting very close and befriending you know ben very early on and then ultimately cutting his throat which i thought was excellent gameplay to pretend to have this great friendship with him sit close with him but be the snake in the grass i think the biggest thing for jesse would have been if he got to the end how would he articulate that but i was very impressed with him throughout i thought he played a very solid game like you said he had a lot of the same characteristics that you would expect a winner to have which is not to be front of line not to be the person that's going to take the hits in a game that's nearly 50 days long i think josh you know is in that position now everybody notices him and a lot of people are saying why are other people not waking up to the fact

8:02 That sam and mark is really running this game and i think josh is the perfect shield for them and mark has identified that which is why he wants to play so closely with josh at the stage would you agree with that harry i guess it gets very complicated when you start looking at like exact very defined relationships and terms and things like that it's hard to see exactly where everyone's heads at when we don't 100 get people's intentions especially because it's like you just seen the votes where it's like you had this group of six that included shay that got rid of got rid of jessie but then it's like the next day they're going for shay because she was just collateral again because they couldn't get to geordie so it's actually it's hard to see who's exactly like planning on taking people out when but i mean that makes sense it would make sense to have a shield i don't know if mark and sam truly believe that they will have a shield the whole time and then i mean ultimately the whole formula is just different to playing as singles i mean you look at the formula of how it works you got 12 jewels and normally in the game of survivor you just talking to that one person you say okay well this is how you win but you kind of break all formats when you have two people that are headed

9:22 Towards the end together because mark and sam are this sort of thing where it's like sam is sort of like batman and she's like going and taking out people and doing all the like ugly things that you don't want to do and mark is just like this shining light he's just like this person that classically gets to the end no one hates him good guy and you just pick up all the votes and so it's like you could easily as a duo head towards the end have sam fall off somewhere along the way to make sure that mark's the one that gets to that final three or two and then they both win the money so it's like it's such a weird thing like just having that other person and two of you are trying to get one person to the end i've gone i've gone on track a bit but i think josh makes a good shield for now but as a jeweler i don't think he can hide them very long i think michelle melissa really painted that target on josh you know and josh brought this on himself because i think josh personally has been underedited crazily this season i honestly believe that he ran the alliance more so than mark in the in the pre-merged section of the game and i think that we didn't see a lot of that i mean nina who was a big player she wanted to be the closest person to josh because she recognized where

10:42 The power was like a player like nina who i thought could have gone very far this season to recognize that you know someone that's been trained by sandra that gives a lot of credit to someone like josh so i think there's a lot happening there that we don't see and then melissa here she or mal she says this is the person who's going to win the whole game and i think personally mark and sam is looking at that right now in the spot and they're saying we need to make sure that josh and jordan remains in the game that little bit longer so that this is still a threat that we need to take care of opposed to jordy and jesse in the spot because jordy and jesse for some other reason you know they were movers and shakers but no one really gave them the credit as to viable options to actually win this game so from that point of view i kind of feel like sam and mark played this correctly in regards to which one of the two dios would they want to work with moving further would you agree with that oh god that was a lot of spiel i think each group has their own little idiosyncrasies that we see but they may not see i mean harry would know this you know the fans want them to make big moves and then sam makes a big move then she's vilified and it's very tricky for us to see what they're seeing as a duo i would if i

12:02 If i wouldn't like to align with a duo actually i'd want to vote one of them off and i'd like to align with all the singles that's what i would do personally harry it was quite surprising harry because they didn't really go after the dios for the longest period of time in this game it seemed like singles were being targeted quite early on yeah it doesn't make sense for a lot of them it makes sense for some i mean it's like to a degree me and baiden did stuff like that my first time playing where we knew that contenders were going down but we knew that we'd probably be two of the last or i at least thought i'd be in the last three to go and so you're kind of waiting on them to fracture because the longer you can sort of split off those other people the less of the end game that you have to go through that's just like a whirlpool of people being voted out because the singles can vote out the duo's right so it's like you can get rid of sam you can get rid of josh or jordan or something like that but then you've got what something like seven or eight singles that you're playing with and that is just chaos whereas if you're someone like i mean me personally if i'm kj or dave or something like that and i think that i can only really beat kj or dave

13:23 Or who else was in there it's sort of shaky are you talking about the singles i think it was shay yeah dave chrissy yeah chris is probably the other one chrissy dave and kj if i'm one of them i'm trying to get the other two out of that three all the way to the final three and if you're thinking about it that way shea is pretty dispensable because you can still then start to look at your options after and all of a sudden if you're successful doing that and then you start to get rid of the duos because they're too dangerous then all of a sudden you're at about five or six with all the singles and it's like just a little bit further ahead to try and see what can work but i mean there's no real wrong answer to that it's like you can get rid of the obvious thing now which in hindsight might be what everyone says like why didn't you make a move like because that happens in survival but you could try and do it and it could all just block in your face when you get voted out randomly at top eight or something like that i don't think there's a wrong answer until we see what happens yeah i mean you're damned if you do any damned if you don't but at the end of the day i think the biggest flaw that you can have is not making a move and i feel like again we've mentioned this earlier in the podcast some of the players are so under-edited

14:44 This season sephie here says that josh is the strongest player in the game he's under-edited and very well could be we don't the one thing i will say on that sofie is that josh does make some crazy flaws this week and being too upfront and honest with information he made that mistake when he spoke to mal and michelle making it clear one of them will go home which gave them an opportunity to scramble and to put paint a target on his back in the tribal council and then again he's going to do it in the second episode this week as well michelle where he gives jordy a little bit of insight to say hey you're going to go next which i think was pretty obvious at that point but still it gives jordy that fire to go on and try and win the immunity which he ultimately does i understand the pros and cons of telling someone you're going next like obviously if they've been close to them they want to give them a heads up however you don't do it because then they've got a chance to go around and scramble you just vote them out i'm sorry you don't tell anybody i would agree with that and sam looked really annoyed sam looked really annoyed in their challenge when she asked jordy who told you and he's like one of the big boys and she knew she knew it was josh immediately so i would say sam is not in a happy place and like i very much think sam

16:04 And mark's route to the end here is they're gonna have to take that move against josh and jordan at some point and this is not helping josh right harry you'll know having played this game information is critical and there's a lot of players here that are not playing well with that information josh freely giving this information away geordi using information about the idol with the wrong person which ends up painting a target on his back there's a few sloppy players this season by the looks of it sloppy is right yeah information is the only thing you have that's like the only thing you have to battle with so the fact that this player is just like giving it out for free not trying to use it for anything not trying to like even just little things like you know you saw a little bit of doubt and then maybe it'll be valuable for you down the line which is what i used to do all the time like you just constantly just pitching things that aren't these big things because as soon as it's something big like how jordy was going up to every single person and just being like trying to talk about the massive thing like sam's idol and things like that no one will believe you if it's in that last moment and like on tv we have that omniscience where we can just see everything and so we know what's true but if you're out there and you hear like 30 lies a day and 30 truths a day it's really difficult to actually discern

17:24 That but the one thing that's usually true is if it's a massive thing it's usually a lie and so you more need to get ahead of the game and like five days ahead start to really plant small seeds because that's what people really think about so yeah i think taking this information and planting it wisely is much better than just like casting it out and just seeing what happens do you feel like you're a bit of a product of what geordi and jesse is doing out there i mean we had a couple of seasons to go yourself you were doing crazy moves playing from the bottom you're one of those players that i always say you know dirty harry is a player similar to jack burger in south africa that know how to play from the bottom and now you've got players like jordy and jesse coming there they want to be the next dirty harry they want to be the next golden god or the next luke toki for instance i'm sorry then i'm sorry they're not up there yet i'm not i'm not as good as those two anyway so we'll have to but no but and obviously you're not we wouldn't want to paint that kind of target on your back if you were able to go back and play the game but you know i mean but you know they look at you can't play you crap yeah you know throughout level but i know what you're saying when people are on the bottom i mean if anyone is going

18:44 To go out and play the best thing to think about if you are on the bottom is thinking like these other people because it's like yes they are on the top but they haven't won yet you're still playing and they're still thinking about how they're actually gonna win and so that's the months that you should be in is thinking about how are they gonna win and how can you fit logically into that plan like it's not just about you like battering through which is what i did at the start and it just doesn't work i just got lucky enough to have some idols there to protect me but after that i started to think that way so it's like for example i was looking at jeanine and pierre and they were headed to merge but if they were going to play logically they had to put spare votes on simon which would have meant that simon would have betrayed them at the merge which means they potentially lose the game so i pitched that quite a bit saying that i'm someone who wouldn't flip if they give me that trust and so that was sort of how i started building inroads there and these people should be doing the same thing they should be looking at one of the duos or someone who's in a good spot with power and thinking through how they can fit into that person's plan to win obviously you then bend it when it works for you to vote them out but in that moment you can support other

20:04 People's plans on the way if it gets you further so jordy should have been more working into that in my opinion i would have been looking at someone like sam or mark and seeing if you can fit into their plan and i mean sam did go to geordie after that vote and she tried to work with jordi or she put an olive branch out there to say hey this could be an idol that the three of us know about i do my five top takeaways live after the episode every time it's about 10 or 12 minutes just off raw thoughts i normally wake up the next morning and i think to myself i should have said this i should have said that because i do it so quickly after the episode but one of the things i pointed out is that you know how difficult would it be for someone like jordy who just saw his brother get embarrassed on national tv by sam how difficult would it be to go then and turn it around similar to how you and janine decided to let you know you got you guys decided to let bygones be bygones and work together but now blood is involved you know you've got your brother out there they've just been dogged on national tv and that's how you feel it doesn't necessarily mean anything bad i mean this is survivor people get outplayed and outsmarted all the time and you know sam will know better than others she went very early in her first season and now she's coming back and she's having a great game so the difference between being an excellent player and getting voted out or betrayed in one season

21:25 Is very minimal at the end of the day however when sam went up to geordi and said we can share my idol and all that i'm like i wouldn't believe you sorry no why would you why would you even approach me and say that it just seems like a flat out lie don't no i like it i like it i know but i don't think sam meant it probably not but it's like i mean it's still it's the right move to see if you can calm people down i mean she did try so it's like i mean that's the big thing is like execution versus ideas is always something that happens in survival but she did have the correct idea i honestly it just depends on ego and on top of that i mean i don't know what it's like to have a family member voted out and then have the people that did it sort of chatting to you straight after but it did make sense for them to work together again because he's the only one that knows about the idols so he has that as leverage we know that sam is slightly paranoid which is both good and bad i actually think it's quite a good thing especially considering she's with mark who's way too chill but like she has that stress that you can kind of you can push it a little bit you can be like listen like yes you could get rid

22:45 Of me but then i'm going to tell everyone on my way out that you have two idols and you're both going to get targeted the whole way from now until the end or you could have us all stay here and we all win so that's what i would say harry i would say something like that if you vote me out tonight i'm gonna have a little speech to say as i walk off after jlp and then that puts a little bit of fear in their mind and it's more powerful than just telling everyone for free yeah especially since jordy doesn't seem to have that capital where people actually believe him or want to work with him the threat of it is more than actually going out there and then failing and then sam gets empowered by that knowing no one's gonna actually do anything or act on it in any case because they didn't after he spoke to them but one of the other things i wanted to say harry is how does it feel to be off the hook you know now that sam has gone and made an even more controversial move then lie about having a child does it feel good to know there's someone else that are getting a little bit off that heat at the moment i thought it was ridiculous i thought it was amazing she's got some flack for it i think is one of the best things i've ever seen a lot i don't go on i don't go on the well i try to stay a little bit away from some of the areas of social media that she would probably get the most well twitter was really bad twitter was shocking yeah and it's surprising because

24:05 You'd think twitter would have her back like twitter in general is all about you know women empowerment and wanting to see women succeed in the game of survival and things like that it's normally what i see but you're right michelle there was a lot of controversy i mean we've got sifi here not to call you out cifi i don't think he means that anything too bad by this but saying it's a bit of snake gameplay there i've seen a lot of these types of comments online when you know this is a game at the end of the day it is about outwitting outlasting and outsmarting people now i think it's debatable if this is a good move for her or not i kind of lean towards it's not but is it a big move it's a bit right awesome it's gonna be remembered and can we just point out as well like if someone says i'll just hold your idol for a little bit and then he's holding it overnight past the tribal like why would you let that happen like i'm just crazy yeah like i'll just take your idol and i'll just keep it on me no that's fine and you just like no like some of that has to get put back on jesse for doing that so i think we really had this amazing to literally just have someone give you an idol like literally just purely through words just convincing them you just like hey give me the idol and then you vote them out so that was pretty cold

25:25 But i loved it whether it's gonna pay off we'll see it's another one of those ones where it's like it's double edged like you could have it paid dividends you it might not i guess we'll just see but i think if it was me i probably would have kept jessie because then it's a big target as well because then you've got two jaws who both have idols you can pretty much get the whole way to the end like that maybe get rid of shea or someone like that at least at least do a little bit before you pull the real big guns out but i mean yeah there's always going to be differing opinions yeah i think the thing for me and why i lean towards this is not a good move is because we hear sam talk after the merch quite a bit about the fact that she doesn't feel like she's got agency in the game she doesn't feel like her voice is being heard it's the boys alliance and mark is running the show and she's having to depend on mark to stay in the game and yes i think she made this move because this is one she can claim at the end she can say i made this move on my own no one knew about it and it will give her some credit but the problem i feel like here is that she still removed a number on her side of the alliance someone that she's worked with pre-emerge that has been with her for such a long time which is by the way to give

26:45 Jesse a little bit of credit i agree i would have never given my idol to anyone i mean felix and jack and survivors of africa the same situation happened where felix wanted to take jacques idol to say this is how we build trust i'll hold on to it for a bit and he outright just denied it and said i'm not doing that because he's not the kind of player that you that you could do that with which i'm sure most players would not have accepted that but i think what happened is that jesse did fall into the spell of sam being like this older sister or mother figure out there for him where he felt so you know he could trust her he felt so safe with her in that alliance which is crazy to believe that he would get into a space where he would think like that but the key thing for me is what i wanted to say and i know i'm sort of getting off topic here is that she's now voted out two people in a row that were her alliance members that could have given her more agency that could have given her more credit and at the end of the day i feel like an alliance member is more important than an idol and as long as you know where the idol is you can still blindside that person at any point in the game i mean if they're trusting you enough to let you hold on to an idol overnight then they're probably trusting you too much in any case do you agree with that michelle i feel like sam potentially lost a little bit of agency here but it's hard to know because we are missing a lot of context sometimes with that even though they do give they give sam a lot of i think she had like 17 confessionals in one of the episodes but still you know we do

28:05 Miss some of the context i agree voting off calm was a bad move because khan would seem to be a bigger player than her and he was a bit of a shield for her i don't understand why she did that but she was trying to get in with the other alliance and you've got to think about where the bigger alliance is you've got to think about are you going to slot into that or are you going to stay with khan and maybe not be able to get as many singles to get the majority i can understand where she was coming from but i probably would have worked harder to keep khan in because he was my right hand man and get the others to flip over so it's a double-edged sword if you can do it or not yeah it's tough on them to play the idol in both cases you could do it very sneakily in both cases you could still vote for them and just tell them to play it yeah sifu here asks could you steal nick's idol if you were in a game with him if i was playing with nick you're not you're not allowed to steal idols i doubt i'd be able to convince him nick would never be convinced to give away an idol he's too smart for that yeah but i think the key thing here is you know i hear what people are saying i hear people are getting upset but at the end of the day this is a game she did make a big move it's a move that's definitely i think going to be remembered

29:25 For a very long time it you know jesse immediately reminded me of eric reichenbach you know which people still remember even now and it happened so many years ago and i think that this move is going to be remembered in the same way now we're just going to see how this play out at the end of the game and if this is going to be enough for her to get a vote there is still nine people left in the game so she can still change the narrative but there's a few things specifically in this week that kind of makes me feel like sam does not have the same respect that mark has in the game at this point and i tell you why because there's the reward challenge where chrissy and jordy wins and they can choose people to go on the reward with them we see early in that episode that sam and chrissy are spending time together they're doing their makeup they're doing the eyes with the charcoal which was a funny scene and chrissy still doesn't choose sam who she spent a lot of the pre-merge with on that side she chooses mark to go on the reward with them and it's little things like that where i'm reading into it at the moment harry where i'm feeling like you know sam's playing a great game and she's getting a big edit but she's voting some of these people off that were close to her that potentially could feel very betrayed i know jessie and her are good friends now and you know he's it's bygones are bygones they've moved on from it but in the game obviously it's still very raw yeah chrissy just

30:45 Doesn't want to get too close because all the people close to him keep getting voted out tell me what's happening that's probably exactly what's happening she's like i'm not taking sam because you know khan's gone jessie's gone you know i want to stay focused yeah no mark's definitely got a lot of people on his side like it's i mean survival is a popularity contest and he's very popular i wouldn't be surprised if they start just pushing for mark to win the whole thing and it's like if you got two people behind that with two idols that's a hell of a thing you could even just once you fully acknowledge that the mark's like gonna beat most people you could pretty much just gun for that especially if you're sharing the money anyway it's like who cares just it's a bank yeah you just got to get him to the end and that's it that's the game plan yeah i agree i mean it's funny you know myself and michelle we talk about the amazing race all the time and the amazing race is a game of dios and we spoke about how important it is that you have a deal that balances each other really well harry kind of mentioned it earlier where he said that they kind of they're the ying and the yang to each other because sam is a bit more paranoid she is a little bit more aggressive in her gameplay where marcus got more of you know i feel like mark even if

32:05 Someone told him that someone's coming for him he wouldn't even flinch you know but i think he needs to try to catch people's so i feel like together they're making the ultimate survivor player this season but the real question after the season and i know we're still early days here is how would they have played if they were on the season on their own like do we think they would have been as effective and i have to say mark did really well in the in the pre-merged section and sam did as well so at least they did do well but name them combining at the merge have just been i think the perfect recipe here for them to get to the end and potentially win this season i think so i mean their pre-pre-merged games were great they were very different but they improved so much on how they played before it's particularly sam i don't i don't think being a pair being so yin-yang in being the pair has matted that much i think sam is more someone who can crush and burn with this gameplay but they seem like they're getting to the end at least one of them anyway i think i think together they are basically perfect because like i think mark on his own is too chill i don't think he has a lot of agency he's like a bit too passive

33:26 And sam's the person that has all the ideas and has a lot of the agency and is going out and doing a lot of these things all you need for a player like that is someone to like bring them back down to earth and then they're an amazing player like as long as they're grounded then they're gonna just put out a lot of ideas you just filter them and it's way more valuable than just having someone by your side who's just passive and who just gives you a vote like you want you want the ideas person so i think she's actually the one that's really pushing it but he will probably be the one that's more likely to win a final two or three yeah but i mean you talk about their pre-merge i mean can we really give them all the credit i mean they've played before and oh i was gonna ask you i was gonna ask you that it is a massive advantage like you understand how it works like you've seen how the social game works before and you just get like a nice fresh reset not only a fresh reset but a fresh reset with other people on the triumph that are easy targets so you're not you're not the number one sort of people being targeted you get that little bit of downtime and if you're smart enough as soon as you get past the first five days like you're golden
