Survivor 43: Episode 2 Review

1:03 That's right I'm your host Chris and I'm back here with Jake as we're going to be talking about episode 2 Jake helps me how's things been on your end been good another a busy week of just school and work but Survivor is always a bright light in my week so I'm excited to talk about it yeah Christian Gale first person to comment in the live welcome back as always apologies for those that did want to watch the live and saw the time move quite a bit this week I did have a little bit of a conflict where I was doing some challenge trivia night content with Drew from the angel cake entertainment Channel and I've just done that for three hours and I'm coming straight into this is my fourth hour of podcasting Jake but I'm bringing the energy you're killing it Chris you got a lot on your plate yep I've got I'm not sponsored by these guys but I got a little bit of Musashi energy to get me through this podcast but I don't know even if Musashi's energy will get me at the same level of energy that Cody has like Cody was once again for a second week in a row here Jake he's just all over the show all over the shop trying to climb everything in on the island trying to climb all these different rocks jumping into the ocean you know he's just having you know he's just living he's living like it says on his ass

4:04 Hey guys we're back apologies for that my computer just shut itself down and maybe I feel like the computer is also had after three hours of live streaming but I was like I need a break I need a break hey I keep going long I was just going to say hello to everybody here in the live stream so we've got Zoo demand in the live stream we've got the CK in the live stream Chris saying Chris is fresh of his third place trivia I was tough Chris it was a more difficult than what I thought but I also did better than I thought I didn't end up with a goose egg which is always a good start and say dang I really cursed alive well we're just starting from scratch I might just cut the first bit do it from here for the audio version and welcome everybody back to the nullify tag Channel where we're going to be talking about Survivor 43 and we're going to be talking about episode two and we're going to start right from the beginning I guess you know we go back to the Baka tribe on this specific episode and the Baka tribe got a lot of content for a tribe that did not go to Tribal Council this week what did you think of that I was I was watching with my dad and after the immunity challenge they went back to Baca even though they didn't lose and I was like oh gabler's quitting he's gonna quit because you know they've been like kind of showing

5:25 That he'd been struggling and they don't they never go back to it to the other tribe that doesn't win so I was I was shocked but you know it's always good to just get more content than expected so it was a pleasant surprise and then obviously gabler didn't end up quitting so it was cool to see yeah well it was interesting because they go back to the Baka tribe we get Owen thanking everybody talking about the people that he trusts he specifically mentions everyone except for Janine's the only person he does not mention in that and then in this specific episode when we're in the Baka tribe Janine goes through gabler's bag at one point so and you get this next on Survivor oh they went through my bag well then I don't trust them how much trouble is Janine right now and from a account of zero to ten where would you put it on that radar of zero being no trouble whatsoever she's making it to the merge 10 she is in deep doo-doo by the time next episode three hits I mean just off the preview I'd say like eight or nine but because clearly it has to be Owen Rats on her Sammy wasn't there gabler wasn't there so Owen or you know Ellie's not telling it telling gabler so it's got to be Owen and then I guess that leaves Owen in the middle to like

6:45 Go with either Ellie and Janine or gabler and Sammy but I feel like he's gonna go with the gabler and Sammy so I would say she's in a lot of trouble unless they decide to go for Ellie I don't know why they would but it's not looking good yeah I think I think she's in a lot of trouble and you make a good point Owen is the person that is sitting in that group there and you know I think that there's a level of the girls not Janine necessarily because I feel like Janine is she's very aware of her position in the tribe she does this out of necessity because she knows that if they go to Tribal Council next Gaber plays the idol she doesn't have the connections with the boys that Ali has I feel like she knows she's in trouble so some people will say bad move bad move to do it while Urban is there but in a tribe of six you've got to trust someone and you can't just trust the other girl and Ali you need to bring another person in and in her mind Owen and Sammy they're working with both of them and they're choosing which one of these two boys They're Gonna Keep what did you think of the arrogance to a certain level of Ali thinking that she's got both Owen and also Sammy in a back pocket you know it's funny this season is giving some parallels to 41 where we've got the yellow tribe has

8:05 Some we'll say confident women on it and the blue tribe is non-existent but it's different because on the yellow tribe the women don't even have the numbers they're in the minority there's three guys they voted out one of one of the women so it's real puzzling to see the yeah the confidence talking about like oh it's a done deal one of them's gone when they're not even they don't even know for sure it's and yeah Ellie had some kind of condescending confessionals towards Owen I was I was thinking like man Owen's being like belittled compared to Sammy the literal teenager like that's gotta that's gotta make him feel good so it's a bit confusing I was a bit confused by it yeah it was an interesting you know sort of confessional she had where she basically said they're both like us children you know like and Owen's like the youngest son that needs all the help and things around camping in Sammy is like the oldest even though they're the other way around and that he's like more independent and can just do his own thing but I give where she's coming from like I think Ellie's killing it in the professionals now it's condescending but it's entertaining yes is she

9:25 Telling a story is she writing a story she's doing a good job on that side I every time I see her in the confessionals as well I can't help now but to see Michelle like I just feel like she is Michelle 2.0 now will she be as good as Michelle the jury's still out on that because I do feel like she's underestimating these boys because they're sitting back at camp and while these two girls are walking around they're saying let's look out for each other let's make sure that if any of our names come up or any of us are going to be at risk that we talk to each other which is probably where Owen's going to go next week and talk to Gables to say hey they're plotting against you they looked at your idol plus you know if you know Gable is not going to go home next vote what's Owen's big best movie here you need the person's vote that's not going home so he has to get close with them he has to get close with the boys and like Sammy said it wasn't the game he came in wanting to play boys versus girls but if the shoe fits then wear it at this stage it isn't his best interest to stick with the boys right no well I mean it is the best interest but I was going to say like he was he's being forced into having to play this boys versus girls I mean it was the women that are now making it that way which is yeah and they don't it's just kind of confusing all around maybe there's some more context that we're not seeing and this is but

10:45 Had a lot of I feel like Ellie was really hyped up preseason and after episode one I can still see it happening but if we're just going off of this episode I don't know I don't know anymore yeah Christian is saying semi and gabler could be in trouble next week to be out I don't see it that way I think that Janine is a lock to go in that tribe if they go back to Tribal Council I guess gabler if he does that whole self-righteousness I'm not going to play my idol because I lost the tribe with I lost the challenge with the tribe so I should be eligible to go home then maybe he could go home but I feel like if he knows people are looking for his Idol he's going to feel a different type of pressure he's only got one more tribal counsel he can use it in so why not use it why not guarantee your safety when you know people are plotting against you it just makes sense you play the idol and I don't feel like Owen knows that Sammy would cut him at the right time but I am not willing to write out Baka between us Jake as a potential to be the dominant tribe if they get to emerge together if they can keep their numbers together I do think that this tribe focusing on relationships before strategy could serve them while deeper in the game it's funny you see the past couple Seasons some of the most dominant players have come from the tribes that are kind of looking troubling

12:06 In the first couple episodes like last season with taku I mean they killed there four of them were the final six but they had someone medically removed from the game episode one then episode two they had to they lost and had to vote someone out and then they just didn't lose for the rest of the time so it could happen again [Music] I think that gabler it would be a real bad move by Owen if he is the one to rat out Janine and tell gabler and then if gabler just does so bad at the challenge and he's like just so weak and he's still struggling at camp that you know and then but then he still has the idol so I don't even know what I'm saying because he's still safe basically I agree with you if they lose it's a done deal it's gonna be it's gonna be it has to be it just makes sense based on how the edit is coming together based on how the numbers are shaking up I just think it's Janine but you're right the only potential risk there is for Gable at this point is him potentially saying oh you know I am a liability to the tribe I should be

13:26 Eligible to be voted out because I'm struggling to keep up with you guys you know because he's got this weird moral compass that does not fit within Survivor I'm glad we're seeing it because I don't want all 20 survivors out there or 18 or however many they've got the season I don't want them all to be exactly the same one of the big gripes that I've had with Survivor in recent times for Survivor us have been there yes we're getting diversity in the cast when it comes to outward diversity and how people look which is great you know I like that but I feel like we're getting people all thinking the same game body type of players people that are so afraid to piss people off and potentially get backlash on social media give me give me diversity and thought as well as diversity in the backgrounds or the ethnicities and all this like all of that's good but don't lose sight on diversity of thought that's my key thing so I'm glad we've got a guy like this who is out there playing as I give I might not agree with it I might think it's crazy but it's making for entertaining TV because he's got other people around him like Owen that would never do that you know and what did you think of the little Owen segment where he went to go get the water and he was saying like he's a little what's it the munchkin or something like that what does that mean it's lost on me yeah what does that mean so that's usually it's just somebody that's really grumpy all

14:46 The time and just you know pouting and like kind of just not pleasant to be around which is when I saw that episode title I figured it was about gabler because it's usually used as an older person like Rudy that's a curmudgeon Rudy from season one that is that is like the epitome of a commercial and I'm like Owen is it like that's a very I don't know how he is in real life but in Survivor I haven't seen that at all like I said I thought it was going to be about gabler so that was weird also like I was cracking up at Owen when he went to go get the water and you as he was walking back he was spilling it everywhere and he was like muttering to himself like make him go get the water you know how dare they're so lazy I thought that was that crack here yeah I loved it I thought it might mean that he's a little bit neurotic or something like that because I do feel like he is a little bit like that but he's keeping it under wraps like he's saying he's like trying to like be pleasant around camp and you know it must be a difficult thing to do because they haven't had proper food they haven't had you know proper hydration while they're out there and we take for granted how difficult it is for you to not

16:06 Be who you are at your root when everything is taken away from you and they do show because it's a long episode they show them out there struggling they show the storm them talking about having to fix the shelter the next day we've seen it in many Survivor Seasons but obviously on an episode that's a little bit longer they can show us a little bit of that elements that they're fighting against out there so not a pleasant time at all but straight after this segment where we saw a little bit of this Baka trap we go to vesi the red tribe and this is where we get Dwight and Jesse out walking around Dwight's looking for advantages and they become a thing suddenly in this episode where they're naturally gravitating towards each other Jesse is trying to find his Survivor husband or Survivor wife which great is going to become here but it's interesting because it shows Jesse is really the best player and Bessie at this stage like he is the like hands down if I had to put money on somebody right now to win this season Like Jesse is right at the top of my list of people obviously it sucks because he's not in my fantasy tribe but you must be feeling good about how he's playing this game here because not only does he have Cody and NECA he's also got Dwight on the other side here trying to build some trust or a level of being able to work with him at this point in the gap yeah I think Jessie is absolutely living up to his pre-season hype he

17:27 Would he along with Ellie we're getting a lot of hype I think it was more so for Jesse about his kind of story of like being in a gang which is awesome and then now it's super cool to see him like you know someone with a really cool story and like actually has the game to come with it I am a little bit troubled about Dwight because I think he was not happy about the outcome of this episode but I mean he has no other options so I mean what is he gonna do so I think I think Jesse kind of put him in a corner he just says okay Dwight you go in that corner I'm gonna do whatever I want and you're just gonna have to deal with it so if you're if you're in JC situation after this tribal you've just betrayed Dwight he's upset with you if he is gonna continue to be that upset at Camp afterwards do you think it's in Jesse's best interest to start working a Noel now that she doesn't have that type person that she's been with and try and pull her in rather because Dwight might be a problem down the line if he doesn't control his emotions and he's real upset do you want to take this person into a merge where they could potentially flip on you and go somewhere else because I feel like Jesse gave him plenty of warning throughout this episode he constantly said to him listen I'm leaning towards Justine's

18:47 Where I want to go and then Dwight was trying to like wool his will he try to put it on Jesse but he didn't have a vote like he didn't deserve to tell Jesse what to do here because he risked his vote in episode one which you should never have done in a six-person tribe like it's like wait this is 100 your fault not Jesse's fault that's his vote not your vote yeah I think that Jesse the game plan for Jesse is to is not to go with Noel I think it's to mend Bridges with Dwight kind of you know nicely say to him sorry this is kind of your fault like you lost your vote you know you know what I'm saying like he's got a kind of show him like Hey I kind of had to I kind of did what I had to do you know like Justine was scaring the crap out of me and I have faith that he can he can like workers do I think Dwight is reasonable I would be very shocked if he like went scorched Earth on like the red shy because that's just not it's just not smart you're just one guy and Jesse is kind of all he has I mean we've seen that Dwight and Cody don't really have they're not really bonding at all it seemed like other than Jesse Justine was kind of the person that Dwight was

20:07 Bonding with the most and now she's gone so I think Dwight is kind of just gonna have to suck it up and stay with Jesse at this point yeah so interesting thing here Christian brings up that Noel is going to be a free agent at the merge and someone that's gonna jump probably more so than Dwight but there is that scene here where Cody and Noel kind of have a bit of a moment their scene is potentially bonding over the fact that Cody had a friend when he was at school that lost his leg due to cancer he lost this Frame very early on which gives us a better understanding as to why Cody lives his life the way that he does he's a free spirit he doesn't think about things too much he just jumps head first into everything in life because he's seen how brutal life can be to someone that doesn't deserve it so young obviously all of us probably have stories where we can think about people we've lost in our lives or a lot of people do if you don't count yourself one is the one of the lucky ones that haven't had to go through that but you know that's a good way to look at life from an early Edge to know like listen I need to put it all out there I need to live my life to the best but he does want to get close to Noel I do think that Cody could be the person who could bring Noelle in and Cody is closer to NECA I feel like than Jesse I feel like Cody and NECA are really tight so Jesse does need to find that next person I think Jesse and Cody is extremely tired as well but Cody is you know if you look at it currently I

21:27 Feel like he's the best setup in that trial because he's got both NECA and Jesse on both ends I don't know how good Nick I feels about Cody at the end of this episode we'll talk about that a little bit later on but you know they seem to be pretty tight it's a type threesome but yeah I feel like it could still go either way is what I'm trying to say I don't know if Noel or Dwight is necessarily going to be the choice here because we haven't heard Cody's point of view there if he's not feeling good with Dwight's not feeling good with him he's also got Neko on the other side very easy easily Noel could be pulled in and that's exactly why Dwight needs to just Let It Go like what yeah like you can't wait and you didn't have a vote son like if you had a vote for enough you did not have a vote like it's your fault that Justine is gone like here's every right in the world to be like you know upset that it didn't go the way he wanted it to but he can't let that affect it going forward he needs to because exactly as you say I didn't even think of it Cody might want to bring in Noel now because I think if he had the choice it would probably be like well maybe I can like you know try to mend Bridges with Noel you know I just voted out her closest Ally but like you know I kind of had a little kind of felt a little chemistry with her so you know maybe try to bring her in Dwight needs to like really suck up he needs to assist three yeah

22:48 Yeah he definitely needs to zip it now in this segment as well we see why Jesse's getting annoyed with Justine a little bit here she walks around sees spiders everywhere she's telling him what to do at camp she seems high maintenance and probably on an island such as this when you've got one person being Cody that makes you laugh all the time is easy to manage runs around makes jokes you know he's not somebody you have to well you think you don't have to manage him until the end of this episode but you know you feel like you don't have to manage him that much he's just good bright light around camp and then you've got Justine who's constantly paranoid constantly draining on you're always going to go one way and I feel like if Justine could look at one thing that was the reason for her to go home here was being open about the fact that she can be deceitful and just being high maintenance around camp and don't forget Chris she's a salesperson dad she's a salesperson they're definitely stuck oh it's just hilarious that Cody was able to you know because I think that Jesse would have been he would have noticed those things regardless but I think that after hearing what Cody had said that she's a salesperson I think everything that she said just were made a thousand editors yeah so I think it was a thousand percent The Right Move she and her coming up

24:08 To Jesse and was like so I'm not really sure if you're trustworthy so what are you planning on doing tonight I sat there with my jaw dropped I was like what like she thinks she's in trouble yet she has the audacity to say this I was shocked I mean I think she was really hyped up in the preseason and I think it's kind of she's kind of showing that like she didn't really know I don't think she really knew the game too much I think I feel like there's a few new how many of these people do you think are like new school survivor fans that only really got into it when the pandemic hit because we know there's a few of them that said Cody is one of them yeah I think he said he started watching during the pandemic which is fine like I'm not discriminating against like you know people that are not older fans but I think that having that knowledge of like you just there's just some things you just don't say you don't say that you're a good liar you don't say to people to their face that they're untrustworthy when you're when you're trying to get them on your side so I thought it was it was entertaining to see I'm trying to remember what I yeah I'm trying to remember what my thoughts on her was when I picked her in the order that I picked her because she was the second girl that I picked yeah well can you remember

25:28 What I said I think you said something and I agree with you by the way so yeah that she had like Kim Spradlin upside because she's such a strong woman she deals but I said that could be a bad thing I remember saying like yes she's got Kim spreading up Vibes she's clearly an alpha female but people could see that as a threat out there like you know because people are looking out for that and that's literally what happened with her I feel like she is someone that probably in life is very successful and gets things her way and you know being like the only female in a male dominant industry like selling in Tech sales I thought she might be intimidating to a lot of guys which she ended up being like Cody was intimidated very early on by her and wanted to get rid of her you know so but yeah she was the second girl that I picked didn't go too well for me I'm just while we're here on this I might as well move it out of it which means that I'm now two players down you've still got two players on me it's not been a good start for me here Jake like I mean I'm coming off a win on survivors of Africa and the Challenge USA but I feel like things are going pretty rough for me at this point you should be feeling pretty comfortable with both Jesse and Ellie quite high up in your on your list there yeah you got it you got super lucky I wasn't involved in South Africa because I would have won that too I think I

26:48 Am in for some I don't know because I have all the blue people you have one person from blue I have five and I'm just so I don't know what's gonna happen with them because they were other than Ryan and Geo they were kind of which were the two people hold your thoughts on the blue truck because we're going to go into that next I just quickly want to bring up a comment here in the live stream Jerome Langer here asking the question is why did it take someone like Cody 20 plus years to watch the greatest game on earth I find it extremely odd you need a pandemic to catch on to that now Jake you're over in the U.S you will know and understand better than anybody else how big is Survivor in the US how many people in the U.S currently watches Survivor and are you as shocked as Jerome that Cody didn't know about this show because from memory the early Seasons had about 40 million people watching it back in season one and season two but currently we're getting closer to like four or five million people watching an episode and the use has got like 300 and something million people yeah so I am not surprised I'm not surprised when I meet someone who has never heard of Survivor because you know if it's like somebody a bit older you know like I would be a bit shocked like oh you've never even heard of it like from the 2000s like because it

28:08 Was massive like it was it was premiered right before the Super Bowl in 2001 and it had like just as many people watching it which is yeah ridiculous but nowadays it's like it's it has like I think it has like the perfect fan base of like another do you know about it yeah but like it's not like mainstream so Cody's 35. Cody's 35 Cody would have been like prime age to watch it back in the day like if you think about it like you probably you probably heard of it back when it was happening his parents probably watched it but you know it just doesn't reach some people that's just how I that's how it is yeah Jerome's saying Borneo was a gigantic success and I agree it was massive success but these days I'm similar to you Jake I'm not surprised that people don't know about Survivor because it is I think very Niche these days the fandom has continued to go down and down in numbers like globally a lot of people I almost sometimes wonder do you feel like Jake maybe there's globally even more people that watch Survivor than in the US itself like I feel like there's so many fans globally that know about it and like if you're getting five million people watching it per episode I bet you there's more than five million

29:28 People globally that watch it you know I think that's true for the like online community because yeah you're right it's crazy how many people I see like on YouTube or on Reddit who are like oh yeah I live in you know random European country and I love the show I'm like how do you even know about it that's crazy and it seems yeah it seems like so many people are from like Australia or South Africa or the UK and Philippines man the Philippines it's gonna be crazy full Survivor like honestly the amount of people that are from the Philippines that message me all the time that are massive they have their own Survivor I believe yeah I believe so yeah so but overall I think we're sometimes we forget a lot of survivors viewers every week on Wednesday purchase middle-aged couples they're just they're like oh yeah Survivor it's on okay let's watch you know they don't go online they don't go they're not like super fans they probably don't even remember what happened in season 42 which is fine that's fine like if you enjoy the show you wait you enjoy the show the way you want to but yeah in terms of the online community for sure I think it's like the percentages are very close for people in the US and people not yeah

30:49 Like I mean I know for a fact I could speak from a South African perspective like in South Africa people love Survivor like they'll watch Survivor South Africa they know everything about Australian Survivor they don't even think about Survivor us they watch all the franchises and it's massive over there I mean to the point where when Rob and Amber played The Amazing Race and they did a league in South Africa people recognized them and helped them in the leg to actually get ahead and be like oh they're from Survivor We love you type of things so yeah it's interesting but Sandy here says that now it's like oh that shows the lawn but back then Survivor is a social phenomenon even the contestants become mini celebrities yes and I guess everybody is sort of agreeing with us there I feel like that's a good podcast to have separate to this recap and now that I'm solely more focused on Survivor and I'm more focused on maybe The Amazing Race like maybe I get a little bit of an off season which I haven't had this year yet so me and you can do some of these topics a little bit more about what does Survivor need to do next to become massive again because I still feel like the call of the game is amazing like I mean again we all fell in love with for a reason and there is a reason that there's still a die-hard fandom there and I do think that there is things that they could do to get viewers back on to watch this show and you know casting great people like I feel like I mean we might three four episodes into this Jake we might regret saying this but at this point absolutely slam dunk I'm

32:09 Enjoying it so far I think it's a great cast but let's go over to the blue tribe let's go over to Coco which is the one that you wanted to talk about a little bit they only got one segment this whole episode yeah not a lot of people get confessionals from them as well like I feel like there wasn't much confessionals this episode from everyone there but Carla did get to talk a little bit about her relationship with Lindsay and with Cassidy both Lindsay and Cassidy I feel like they didn't even have a professional this episode yeah later on but she talks about the fact that they're close and then James didn't get a confessional which I was high on James week one I was like James could still be a winner well I don't know now like he didn't get a single professional this episode we don't know anything at this point after 41 and 42 after seeing Erica win I mean she just kind of broke all the rules I don't think we get the same type of winner I'm calling it I do not think this winner I feel like I feel no I feel like Erica and Marianne that type of win I know Marianne they didn't it was clarified on the podcast last week for me that they didn't they didn't see Marianne win but I feel like even with Erica it's a similar type of win where it was like the undercover under the radar player that sort of really showed up at the end and I feel like people are looking out for this season like I don't think I think like there's a higher likelihood we get a big player win this season I'm putting I'm calling it like I feel like

33:29 You know Ellie is coming across as a big player Jesse is coming across as a big player Cody's going to be a massive player this season of the longest days and at the moment he's looking good which is it's going to be good for the season to have him on the longer he's there Sammy is a big personality he's sitting pretty at the moment Owen is good I just don't know like I mean who's the Erica of this season like Cassidy maybe could still be maybe I don't know but I think we're just gonna this is episode two we're getting so far ahead but I will say like after having Tony wins season 40 like that was just you know super awesome but I liked that we kind of get got to see two other winners that weren't like yeah you need it sometimes quite opposite and now after having those I'd like to see something different from that so and I feel like Survivor used to I feel like they hit a lull in the 30s where like every winner was just kind of like an alpha male type guy you know maybe they played a bit differently but like in terms of like appearance they were all kind of the same so I'd like to see a bit more diversity of the winners type like the type of game that they play now so I would love to see a big player
