Survivor 44 Episode 9 Review ft FlynnMasters

1:20 To talk about this episode a really good episode so you got me on for a good episode yeah well we spoke on Russell muscle TV's Channel and we did a podcast on there maybe like two or three weeks ago and I felt like it was a lot more yeah but I think that it's changed for the better these last two episodes have been really good and Jake surprise when you allow the cast to play the game they can't actually come up with some entertaining content who would have thought right no this episode is definitely a step in the right direction as opposed to two or three episodes ago where yeah I felt like kind of the vibe of the community was for Doom and Gloom no I definitely agree now for everyone listening to the audio version of this if my mic sounds a little bit different I'm hoping it's better than the mic that I had when I did the challenge recap last week which was really bad I am about to travel quite a lot over the next couple of months so I'm working on getting a setup that's a little bit more mobile and I will have a bit of mic probably later on today I just haven't been able to get something good before doing this podcast but I'm hoping you guys can hear me clear and that my volume is consistent Jay because it's sounding good on your end yeah sounds fine to me okay great well hello everyone in the live let's say hello to Chris

2:40 Welcome back we've got Tom McPherson also in the live and Jay welcome in the live those are the first couple of people that have commented here let's start off here right at the beginning of this episode Flynn so we see them going back to Camp they've just voted out Brandon and there's a lot of different mixed emotions and feelings about this vote but myself and snuffed who spoke about the episode last week we were really high on Carson and yam's move to pretend like they were still with the ratu tribe when they were clearly working with the Soca tribe what did you think of these early scenes seeing everybody get to camp and noticing the fact that you know yam is saying he's got a hit list now he's taking out everybody that has coming that has been coming after him at this stage in the game yeah like it's kind of crazy just how well the tika you know you usually see like someone play the middle or Duo play in the middle we're seeing like a threesome play in the middle super well and you know we saw this episode even they get they got targeted for like a second and then you know that went up in Flames because again they need those three votes so the Tikka is playing really well really well of course jam in particular I mean literally anyone that goes for what now it's the four people that wrote his name down at the merge right they're all gone now right so it's been really insane I mean really cool to see this group that really got decimated in the pre-emerge do so on the post merge and yeah they're playing really well obviously

4:00 The three big stars of the Season as well too so yeah they're playing well yeah Jake I found it extremely funny to see how Lauren and Jamie pretended maybe they did I don't want to yeah maybe I'm being a little bit facetious but you know they said that they were gonna split the vote but it was Brandon's fault they had to justify the fact that they got duped yeah I mean you can't just put the blame on him I mean of course he's an easy scapegoat since he's out of the game now but yeah I it was a mistake they should have just split the vote yeah 100 Jay says also Carolyn she was also involved pretending since she's a tikka too but I think Carolyn ended up still voting with Soca but she definitely has a role to play this was a big episode for Carolyn as a whole Flynn because again we know the backstory of Carolyn quite well but sometimes I see a lot of people online say that they are annoyed like you need a backstory these days to get onto Survivor which that's always been the case it's just the edit maybe in a very unorganic way focuses on it these days and shoves it down our throat consistently but I really enjoyed seeing her tribe interact with her in this episode and getting to know who she is what she's gone through that feels more organic than the stories that they're sometimes pushing down our throats right Flynn I was gonna say yeah because a lot of these stories are like really forced

5:20 Like they'll bring up like something to happen from like what sixth grade as like a sad story right like this is like been like her entire life like in what she like does this for a living as a drug counselor you know this is like literally her life right so this is you know so this makes perfect sense and yeah I'm glad it so I'm know she mentioned before I mean I'm sure she's mentioned before but we got a real like in-depth look at her life and like everything she's gone through and yeah I was this was one of the better feel good or sad stories you could say but I think it had to happen though too and it was just good to see you know a background in her life too so yeah I really enjoyed it I'll tell you why Jake why I enjoy this personally in the way that we saw it play out in this episode and them having time to socialize and get to know each other is because we got to see Lauren's reaction to Carolyn's story you know because normally they tell us about it we don't get an opportunity like I don't get to see Jake sitting at home telling me Oh man Carolyn that story just hit me right there like I mean I wish like I took this from Carolyn's story and I'm going to change my life for the better I don't get to see that but when they play it out and the camp Dynamic is there and people interact I now get to see Lauren say or not Lauren sorry it was frenny Franny say that I can you know I take a lot from what Carolyn has gone through I'm still not comfortable with myself and I want to be more comfortable within my own skin like I enjoy seeing those moments Jake I'm totally with you I think a big key thing

6:40 About them doing this is the interactions between each other it's not just them focusing on one person and they're just doing a confession off by themselves no interactions with any other people you know I think about Jay and Adam and Millennials versus Gen X like the scene where they're both talking to each other about their moms and it just made it even more powerful than when Adam was just talking about his mom on his own and so I'm not saying it's a bad thing to only focus on a person without the interactions but it just makes it even better when they do have that yeah it's interesting because I kind of felt like yam was also speaking for the fans this episode Flynn because he was saying we finally have a down day on Survivor We finally have a time just to like get to know each other and that's kind of what we all have been saying for such a long time is that when you make it 26 days the only thing people can think about is playing the game trying to strategize getting the numbers they don't get that opportunity to just let their guard down and be people and that's what made reality TV so great from the start is seeing people interact and having fun out there on the island which we get to see less of no yeah 100 agree like I mean like we all been saying it's probably like the best episode of the Season like go figure or at

8:00 Least one of the best episodes and go figures on that off day when they have that time to bond and we get those character moments so you know yeah I know it's being the dead horse but it's the truth I mean this proves this episode proves it yeah let's read a couple of the comments here Tom McPherson says mental note don't ever vote for Yam I agree with that it's just not a good idea yeah man will come for you if you do that Chris says Carolyn's story was that made Survivor great all those years ago just a bunch of people from different worlds coming together 100 and we like to see those interactions Jay says Carolyn is so inspirational I'm glad she's been cast on this season like I again I know this is again we repeat this almost every single week but Flynn Carolyn probably the biggest character that we've had from the new era would you agree with that is there who else like if we had to choose a Mount Rushmore of new characters for this area let's go Flynn like who do you have in your Mount Rushmore and then Jake I'll give you a chance the females oh actually I was gonna say the females have to be Shannon Carolyn but then maybe Marianne as well too so oh so the two guys Cody and who would be our guy to choose maybe gabler a big character maybe Ricard but I mean to me Carolyn's definitely never one though I just I yeah and I'm pretty sure you know she's gonna make a very deep run so I don't think she's gonna anywhere anytime soon yeah to me and I yeah I think we said this during the

9:20 Russell's podcast and I think I said that myself she was the best the biggest character you know the character of the new era so far yeah Jake who do you have tell me who's your Mount Rushmore because Carolyn is so far above everyone else but then we who's the other three if we had to if I had to pull the gun to your head of characters the name that is just jumping out to me that Flynn already mentioned the Sham I mean I remember like she was like the person of 41. she had own theme song she had her own theme song I mean the editors loved her yeah I'm thinking Marianne as well this conversation's kind of making me realize hmm not a lot of guys like it's mainly the women that were that are they're coming to mind when we think of this I don't know it's a bit tough I'd say possibly yam is up there too oh yeah well that's why I think that's why Jeff loves this season so much is just because there are so many big characters I mean I personally this episode made me even like Franny that much more and I'm already a big friendly Stan but one of the things I think that's standing out for me on Franny at the moment Flynn is that since matters out of the game like

10:41 I think we have gotten to know for any on a different level as well and I'm enjoying that more because when they were focusing on Franny and Matt's relationship the whole time which they still do at the tribal council but luckily now it's at the end of the episode I actually enjoy just seeing Franny the player not for any one half of the showmates yeah I mean I will say though like I know I don't know what you guys thoughts on winners or whatnot but like she did have a pretty big cooldown episode I was like hoping you know not to like again have her whole storyline be involvement map but I was kind of hoping like you know the episode after Matt went home you know she began like a Revenge are kind of like Natalie Anderson and San Juan Del Sur after Jeremy got voted out so I was kind of hoping in that regard we kind of like get a flashback to Matt it's like her revenge art to win for him but yeah no she's been she's I mean I love Franny she's one of my favorites this season she dominated this challenge great competitor so I'm very interested to see she's a very I have an idea of like where everyone's gonna end in this end game Freddie I'm not sure she could you know make final travel accounts so she'd be the next boot she's got a very interesting storyline because as you said her entire struggle on this you know the first half the season was with Matt so and now we're just finally started to see for any of the by herself well what impressed me about Freddie is that she's the only one that is recognizing that Tika sitting in the middle and that tick has the is the tribe that's using both actions

12:01 At the stage I will say that was so interesting that like the editors put that in for like just for a second there so I wonder if again is that gonna cause her downfall or is that is she gonna be the one that breaks them up because I imagine you know if a ticket doesn't win the season like whoever breaks them up is going to win you know I mean I agree yeah that doesn't for me outside of Tika outside of Tikka the only two that I see with the potential of still winning this game right now is Heidi and Franny like those are the two I'm the highest on for anybody outside of Tikka just Jake is there anybody else outside of Tikka that we're missing or sleeping on right now because who's there's Jamie Lauren and Danny that I'm not mentioning I don't know if any of them's got a chance no I don't see it and unfortunately all of those people all the people on my team are in that group so Lauren and Jamie isn't you'll learn and Jamie are my only two left I'm yeah it's gonna be a tough end of the season because who knows killing us we'll talk about that a little bit later on like he's got he's got the dream team right now but yeah I thought it was very interesting obviously Heidi the other person I actually before I move on from that the conversation between Danny and Freddie I saw some people online you know saying that Danny was being a fool for not listening to for any in that moment and I think that it's results focused I think that as an as a show right now the edit is showing us

13:22 That The Three Stooges are running the game and the Three Stooges are in control but from Denny's perspective I don't think him pushing back on Franny was such a bad move because ratu's God publicly known advantages she have to take care of that right now but at some point you have to recognize that Tikka will have to be dealt with as at least after getting rid of one of these players right now I think they do need to look at Tikka in the next round for any of them to have a chance but I just wanted to say I don't think Denny's read was as bad as some people online thought it was Jake yeah I think I see myself leaning more towards he was being too dismissive of it because I mean yeah you should be you should be like looking at the whole picture and saying okay who's in the middle who's who is like kind of running the game right now and it's those two they're kind of are those three they're kind of pitting both sides against each other but I will say that yeah because of the advantages and you know you already burned them from voting out Brandon so even if you team up with them for one vote you know they might still want to you know get back at you later on so it wasn't completely stupid what he was saying but yeah to kind of just dismiss it as like not even an option I think was maybe a bit

14:42 Foolish well I give what you're saying at least say hey maybe not this round but we can talk about it again next vote like we should yeah I get what you're saying just saying Denny's social game is tank he was pretty rude in this episode with his reaction to the rice and face at tribal I do not see them voting for him yeah I think he's gonna struggle but we've seen elements of Dany not being wait and I've said this before I think personally Flynn Danny is playing and he's like a dinosaur I like Daddy I don't think he means I don't think he means anything horrible by the way that he acts he's clearly a great human being if you follow him on social media and the stuff that he's doing he looks like a nice guy it's just I feel like he is from the 30 the Survivor 30s era and we're now in the Survivor 40s era so he's like stuck if he was playing in the 30s he could be the winner I agree yeah that's a very good take I agree with that yeah for sure now Jay here says maybe a good moment for Franny's winner Danny gets taken out by Tikka maybe after being targeted by yamyam since froney wanted to take out yam and it's important to her winning pitch yeah it could be I mean the editors show us these things for a reason so it's kind of what Flynn said it's either going to be her downfall or it could be the thing that we look back at kind of like how Sandra always wanted to go against Russell and nobody listened to her and then at the end she used that as a way to win the game so you never know why the editors are putting it in there but at this stage I would say you'd be a brave man to bid against the

16:02 The Three Stooges to run the game because we're really seeing everything from their end now I do want to move on Heidi the other person I said that has a chance of potentially still winning we're starting to see more of Heidi's game like it really has started heating up after the merge this specific episode Jake she does what I always say you should do she finds an idol and she keeps it a secret how great is it to see Heidi find her first Idol this season and is highly growing on you as well she is I don't know if I if I would really put much stock into her right now obviously that The Three Stooges put all your money into them right now but for sure like she's kind of making she's making good moves right now of not telling anybody about the idol it's just it's it's hard to see it right now especially after kind of her missteps with the what was the advantage called the like control of Vote or something control to vote I just want to I just want to say Jake like the controller vote was such it was such a setup such a setup by the production team give that talk about to her like it's hard to call her out on that and say she made a bad move because right she had to play she had to play it you know what I mean so I think in fact I would say she probably damage

17:23 Controlled it better than what I expected with the damage control with yamyan you know so I feel like she did a good that is that connection that's true I will say I will say that yeah that was my biggest concern about it and I guess that really hasn't was her relationship with the ambient because she kept saying in that episode I love yum I don't want to you know burn any Bridges with him and then she says okay you vote for him but yeah it seems like that you know he yamyam's too focused on ratu and all the people that voted for him so yeah Flynn did you want to say something on Heidi it looked like he had something there as well yeah well I was gonna say now that those four people are gone because like we said that's been the joke right everyone who writes his name down you know has gone home well now I wonder if he's going to turn out to the person who oh that's true yeah no yes that's true well will he or will he get away by saying well it was Lauren's vote that was yeah because you know Kahuna picked up on it before myself and Jake or anyone else but it's the Puerto Rican connection it does count for something you know like sometimes people flock together they've got something in common I've said this to Jake before when I travel the world and I stumble across someone else from New Zealand or South Africa immediately I'm like oh someone I can relate to so I want to go and have a chat with them you know

18:43 So that does happen and I think on the island they must have some similarities commonalities things that Bond them together in the game what else do we have here before we get into the challenge the other part there's two more things I wanted to talk about before we get into the challenge so Carolyn she does have a bit of a conversation in regards to his strategy in the game and her strategy in the game is an interesting one Jack because I feel like she is kind of doing the intentional Fabio who's one of your favorite winners in the game she's pretending to be the Goof she's pretending to be someone that's not onto it but in reality she's one of the smartest players out there do you think that she can pull this off successfully because no one is seriously looking at Carolyn at this point and I've got to say Carolyn is the person I want to win the most right now she is the person I'm shouting for this season I think she can be and the reason is because she's a Super Fan she is as we see she's not a fool she might be playing that up but I think she'd be able to explain her case as long as she's not going up like unless something crazy happens and one of these players ends up becoming you know the next Tony and pulling some crazy moves if she's kind of sitting at the end with her with the right group and she kind of can explain that

20:04 I think they respect her like as a person and that could translate into okay yeah that respect I can vote for you to give you a million dollars her journey I think as a whole to the end game would be one that's going to be very interesting to follow because when she gets to the end if she has that tearful moment that Fabio had but it's not because of thinking of his mother but it's more about thinking of the fact that she had to overcome so much to get her family and you know to be on Survivor being such a big fan like I think it could translate well as well it's just dependent on who she sits next to at the end we don't know at this stage because I do think there's a few contenders still and I'm just fearful Flynn that people might not see the game behind the game and if she can't articulate that well then maybe she still doesn't get the votes at the end which would be sad yeah no I definitely think Kayla's getting to the end it's gonna be one of those two choices she's either gonna be our winner and she can you know she can't pull this Fabio or again people unfortunately are just gonna can't see past you know who she really is they're gonna take her out of this goofball that you know despite her playing a great game you know and we as viewers can see that the people on the island won't be able won't be able to see that so I definitely it's gonna be one of those two outcomes and it's just a matter of what if I had to pick I do think it's going to be the latter I think she's gonna be the third place finalist or second place whatever

21:25 But we'll see we'll see I again I agree with you though I'd love to see Kellen win the season though like that's awesome I think like if you had to look at all of them who's been playing the hardest since day one it's been Carolyn 100 she's been playing the hardest but Chris here says something and I do agree with you Chris she says I don't think Carolyn is pretending to be a goof she's just like that it is the other who don't take her seriously and to miss her as goofiness I think what she's doing is I think Carolyn is very self-aware and she knows that people perceive her as goofy so she plus she plays into it's kind of I think a better way to articulate I don't think she's trying to stop them or she's trying to pretend to be anything else she uses that thing to her advantage in the game which is really great to see from her as a player but I will say this Carolyn is the first person to get a call back from the season if she doesn't win Jay I feel like Carolyn is getting a fan favorite Fallen Angel there that loses at final four fire making Just Like Jesse and 43 if you pay attention or edit it's very similar to Jesse's from last season yeah you saddened Me by that comment DJ because it's true because we had Jesse's you know family background and where he came from and the juvie and all that stuff and yeah I hope I hope you're not right I really hope Carolyn finds a way to the end she deserves to get there but it's not going to be the first time we have it happen all the time where our favorites don't win the game lastly I do want to talk about before we go into this

22:46 Challenge Carson you know he's been struggling like in The Three Stooges he's the one that you know his editors dropped quite a bit at one point I was the highest on his chances to win because he had all these connections I was just really fearful of the fact could he manage expectations when he starts cutting people which he had to do this episode he had to cut someone that he had this Bond within the game will that come back to bite him in the butt that's a big question but it's not fun Flynn to see him out there struggling at the moment not being able to take anything in not eating being sick and that like your heart goes out for him because you know that he wants to be out there so badly yeah I know especially for such a young kid like that you know I mean he I mean like give him credit he busted his ass to put on all that muscle to get out there and now it's just like he's not eating anything now he probably went from like over I saw an Instagram the other day like he was like saying he was eating so much he was throwing up and now he's thrown up because he's not eating enough so it's just like damn what a full circle moment that's Survivor for you but yeah that's tough to see yeah it's hard it's heartbreaking to see him struggle like that but they do go into this challenge you know seeing the Carson is struggling this much and everybody is really struggling for food and that they do go in with a bit of a false promise from Jeff that there will be some negotiations going on at the immunity challenge but we know that going into this class Jake wanted to be the first cast not to take the rise so there's a lot of them

24:06 Saying that we're not going to do it what did you think of this whole Fiasco about there being a negotiation which didn't even I think Jake was I know Jake Jeff was going into this thinking he would be able to negotiate with them but they really were like we almost don't even want to do this to be honest we don't want to sit out we want to play it was a weird turn of events yeah and then they yeah it was weird and then some people that like you would think would like okay yeah I need this ended up sitting out it was It was kind of weird yeah because they were yeah they were talking like let's be the first season to not to not accept it you know yeah like Heidi I didn't think she was going to sit out but she ended up taking one for the team towards the end because who was the other person that she was trying to convince to sit out who said that they couldn't Jamie didn't want to sit out so we ended up with like a few people that Danny was never going to sit out he looked at it as an insult to the game which is again that old school mentality which I have to be honest if I was out there I would probably feel the same I just wouldn't verbalize it as much as he did but I probably also I would like to believe I could sit out from having to get the rice to just be able to participate in this challenge but you know Kane Carson quite a few of them they were more than willing to get this food and again Flynn it brings back the question for me because we see them going back to camp and they're all saying

25:26 We're firing on all cylinders we can start thinking about strategy this is the thing that I've been advocating about for the last three seasons Jake is tired of hearing me say it but I'm going to say to you now Flynn I think we should have at least rice in the game as a bare minimum so that we can see some exciting strategy play some exciting moments that can I just think the people most of the time are lethargic and there are zombies lying around in Camp because they don't even get the basic necessities out there and for some other reason Jeff thinks that this is fun yeah I mean yeah I mean I get it in a way that you know he's 26 days we're gonna make 26 days you know that's damn you're two weeks less than what it used to be so we're gonna make it as hard as you can so I get it from that perspective but yeah I mean and I don't I don't know I don't know if the gameplay has been kind of stay these past three seasons because of you know the fact they're not eating or the fact that Jeff just can't stop screwing with the game right so oh it could be combination of both right but like we keep saying it's funny how we keep you know saying do we make these like you know give these people more time to talk you know great episode we give these people more rights like you're saying hey turns into a great episode so you might be on something yeah I just think that I'm not saying like listen yeah no one no one went on to Survivor even in previous Seasons gaining weight like by having a little bit of rice like everybody's still gonna lose what like I get it to 26 days we want to make it even harder but

26:46 For me I don't know it's missing I don't know if I'm the only one on that be interested know what the chat is thinking about that as well Jay this is I don't give why Danny was adamant that people stood out when he's a big threat and needed immunity would help his chances of people set out that's true he should have encouraged people to sit out say he's got a better chance of winning Chris is saying it was hardly a negotiation they should have been able to get Jeff down to three people sitting yeah like but I think that comes down to no one had Angelina's skills on there like nobody could nobody could go to Toe with the big Jeff probes out there to get the negotiations going Game Changer like we definitely just the swagelina like we haven't seen her come back yet we really need that returning season yeah for a next Second Chance let's go yeah 100 who knows but listen what a impressive performance once again here by Franny and Danny goes up against each other head to head in this endurance challenge the conditions look miserable out there I don't think we can appreciate like having like no you know rain cover while you're out there in the wind in the rain it's probably cold as hell having to fight against Danny who is someone that you know if you look at his personal life outside of it he does a lot of meditation and breathing work and all this kind of stuff like how big of a beast Flynn Masters

28:06 Is Franny like is friendly like the undercover you know challenge monster from the season because she's like doing extremely well in every single scenario that they're putting her in I mean I mean I know she said like she doesn't she thought choosing me as weak I mean I press it in Sierra's week but I definitely didn't ask you to like being this big of a challenge piece she's awake one two now and like he's been in every challenge like she was a great I mean great challenge competitor on the old green tribe so yeah I mean she's doing a great job and I will say like a lot of the individual mini challenges these days do kind of favor woman in that regard especially her body type so I'm interested to see how many how many she can pull out from here yeah I don't think that was just a flat out will against Danny and she won so that was pretty Epic yeah we've got Richard all the way from South Africa my co-host of Survivor South Africa in the Life Richard welcome to the stream saying an Australian Survivor they get daily ration so they've really help them play hard and it's fun I agree with you Christmas I agree they should have enough rice or bring back the survival auction if they wanted a food basket based risk reward yeah all of us want the auction and I think there's ways you can bring it back right you just say from the start there's going to be no advantages you can only bet on food you know done and don't say okay here's the advantage what I like is the Australian way of doing the auctions where you get two

29:26 Tribes doing the auction and they have both tribes have got the money that they have to share so it's like a risk reward how much money would you take out of the kitty you know out of the pool to be able to bet for the thing that you want and like so you risk by over paying for something because there's like this tribe Dynamic going on as well so even if there is a reward you know you've got to be careful about what you do and when you do it so I kind of like that and I hope they bring it back or at least try something different Jason is so true Christian not a negotiation if anything they would negotiate amongst themselves Jason's Freddy works for a meditation mindfulness Center I didn't know that so it makes her cut out for these types of balancing challenges like this is like my worst fears if I was to ever go play Survivor by the way Jake like I hate the endurance stuff like I could do good on any obstacle course I think I'd be okay at puzzles I gotta know if I'll be like a Puzzle Master but the endurance stuff where it's going to go on for like two or three hours like I strong able to sit still like I don't know how I could stand still up there yeah I am totally with you I'd be like I'm always like shaking my knee or even when I'm just like sitting down like doing something I would suck at endurance but yeah I love I would love like the obstacle course type stuff that's my jam yeah 100 ball well done to Franny she wins this immunity which gives her a lot of power going back because now she can talk to

30:46 Everyone about where the move is going to go we see Tikka in full overdrive they're in the center here they get to decide who they want to work with if they want to work with Soca if they want to work with ratu obviously we know that by the end of this episode Flynn the gigs up now on Carson and yan because they did vote against Kane do you like this move here from them was this the right time for them to reveal where their allegiances were sitting in the game I think they also I mean that's the thing they're such an interesting spot I do think like either way where they stuck with whether they stuck with hiding or you know just flat out shorter colors I think like they realize the other five people are gonna like realize that the final seven even that they gotta turn on the ticket three so if they felt that Kane was the biggest threat and you know most importantly probably we're scared of brought to you in general with all their advantages and idols and extra votes as opposed to the creek what's the green charm's name I can't remember Circle as opposed to Soca so if they feel that way ahead that was a you know I get why they go I understand the cane move right so I totally get what they're coming from in general Yeah the more interesting thing for me was that even within the Three Stooges there were differing opinions of the direction that they should go in because Carolyn wanted to go for Danny where yam wanted to go for Kane because he wrote his name down
