Survivor 45: Episode 3 Review

0:13 [Music] [Music] n [Music] [Music] welcome back to the nullified Tech Channel on YouTube where Kahuna and I've got the TNT takes for you Survivor 45 episode 3 that's right we are back baby Guna how you doing really good man like I'm excited it was a fun episode of Survivor this week a lot of new stuff that I was like kind of like interested in and going along with the ride going along on the ride with I really enjoyed it what about you yeah I enjoyed it there was a lot of commotion online you know with people saying that this is the best episode of the new era of Survivor 40 I guess the new surviv and yeah I think it was a great episode

1:33 I haven't fully digested it to sort of have a feeling about it strongly that it's the best episode because I feel like there was more game defining episodes in some of the previous Seasons that have happened but you know recency buyers is a thing though Kahuna and one thing that really I do think comes into play is the fact that the 90minut episodes it is working it definitely is working for Survivor yeah we're getting to see a lot more across the board obviously the last couple episodes there's been so much f focused on the disastrous yellow tribe getting a lot of the shine because when you're the team constantly going to tribal you're the team that's constantly going to get the attention of the of the edit but in this episode like we see we get we get reward challenges we get like beach time Blue Team Beach time with red team yeah like it's really great I love what they're being able to do comedy moments in there like a little bit of everything which really does have a feel to me like old school survivor even though I know it's a new school season it's a lot of extra twists and mechanics that are going to be thrown in there's more time to explain the mechanics of the twists as well so when it pays off at the end of the episode we actually understand what's going on where in these shorter episodes it feels like they're trying to explain most of the time what the mechanics are instead of giving us the character building moments giving us the things because it makes us feel as neutrals like

4:13 Way from here on out is down really I'm hoping that's not the case I don't think so because I feel like the like to be fair and to somewhat agree with Fury tiger wolf here there are some really good cast members still in the game that have yet to play the game like we haven't seen Austin D Drew and Julie do anything as of yet seu and jiah they're kind of sitting on the outside in that tribe they haven't had to vote yet and then in the blue tribe we know that there is this power struggle between the likes of the girls the three girls Kelly Katura and Kendra with Brandon working very close with Kelly and then obviously the boys being together we see a little bit of that here and I've got thoughts about what happened early on in the episode there as well but I feel like the season is setting up these great story lines for us and there will be a payoff at some stage like I'm just saying let's not jump the gun and say it's definitely the best season but it's probably one of the strongest we could probably agree to the strongest start to a season in the new era I would i' would be willing to agree to that well I missed 42 and 43 so I'm agreeing with you so far and from what I've gathered I don't think that would even really touch what is happening here this season so I'm down I'm on board with what you're saying yeah so we start off on this episode on the Lulu Beach saaya

5:34 Gives Emily her shot in the dark back what did you think of this move did you love this do you think that she did the right thing here and without being results focused because obviously we know how things play out at the end what was your thoughts on the fact that she was willing to give that back yeah great move good move I think it was because like we know that so far the shut in the dark has not worked ever like successfully it got played and landed on the right whatever last season but she wasn't even up for danger so it's never been played successfully it's not that much of a danger so when you hand it back you're solidifying the relationship Emily's reaching out you've got she sa's obviously got thoughts in her head about Caleb going forward maybe too early for that sort of thought but it's there and she knows that with all numbers she's got to do something so bringing Emily in when Emily's already trying to extend the Olive Ranch and reaching out to her and then welcoming okay we lost you there for a bit ker you're back now but I'm going to just reiterate what you said because I agree with you I think it was a great move to basically give this back to Emily Bol trust

6:54 The aim here is to buold allies for the long term so keeping the shot in the dark which has never really worked in any case for anyone in the new era I mean but it's still a mechanic that makes for interesting strategy at times I didn't feel like it was powerful enough for her to keep it she clearly wanted to work with Emily at this stage and she felt like this was going to be that thing that is going to cement her relationship with Emily when she wanted to make a move here against Caleb and a lot of people will say that she played too hard too fast this episode and we'll talk about that in its whole I can understand where the thinking came from for her but I think that she misjudged how Emily sort of had that bond with Caleb and the work that Caleb did earlier in the season there was a bit of a miscalculation there and the fact that she let Emily in very later on her own Advantage I think probably didn't help either tough spot to be in but overall like this move it's interesting seeing this here and then we go to the blue Beach right and this one here I've got some thoughts about this you know like in South Africa and I know Australia is probably very similar we love our fires we love making fires we're we call Barbecues Bri and it's like a tradition over there and only one person is allowed to handle the fire and do cook up the sausages and the meat and things like that this is a big tradition in South Africa right and we get taught from a very young age when you stoke

8:14 A fire you don't Inhale Smoke and we get this scene with Jake by the fire and you can hear him inhaling he's like as he's blowing straight into the smoke and I was thinking to myself has this guy never gone camping in his life of course you're going to black out doing that it felt like just a very idiotic thing to do for a very smart guy because he can't be dumb if he's a lawyer right so he didn't watch Mike scooping on a Survivor Outback like falling into the fire many years ago luckily Jake was a lot less injured he wasn't he's a lot less melty in the skin Department than Mike scin was so I'm really happy about that I would have had like when I saw the preview last week and then I saw him actually fall down he's literally lying on top of it and can't get up like he's trying he's trying to like get off it and just looks like he's drunk or whatever but that could have been really dangerous if that was a raging fire or whatever and Jake the Jake the attorney from Boston lives with his grandma he's not stoking fires out on Islands very often and he proved that it was not a smart move but it ended up working out in his favor Cindy says here I'm not related to Kelly but I did meet her two years ago before when went on Survivor she was out white water rafting toour guide wow that's awesome oh our

9:35 White water rafting toour guide that's really cool that you got to meet her Geet says trib coming next episode yes we'll definitely talk about that Courtney is still giggling over the blind H she was so confident also says say blue Beach five times quickly no I want to remain monetized on the channel Courtney don't do that to us okay but yeah really fun episode but this somewhat dumb move or buffoon move in my opinion and just not being aware of what to do around a fire ends up playing kind of in Jake's favor because he's been the early Target for the girls in the episodes here but Kendra seeing him in this weaken state has her maternal instincts kicking in and she suddenly feels like she needs to take care of Jake and she's bonding with him and she says it's funny because I watched the episode twice she says I'm not going to play an emotional game and you have like the goofy playing in the background when she says that so I feel like Indra is going to play an emotional game this season and she kind of lets her emotions take over in this moment at any case because suddenly she wants to become boys with Jake or Jake says that they can be boys yeah I mean Jake I'm hoping Jake is smart enough to see that the my three blue queens that I've chosen for my draft in Bellow are very close

10:55 And he can see that it's him and Bruce and him and Bruce is two out of six so I'm wondering if he's like seeing like doing some maths on his fingers and going me and Bruce is probably not the best position to be in we got another immunity challenge coming up we don't know what's going to happen reaching out to Kendra like why not extend your network even that little bit and for Kendra too she's got options with the three blue Queens which I like to call them and then now yeah why not reach out and have a fourth there because three is still split with the boys right so why not get your extensions out there and increase your network and even if it's not to necessarily bring them into your fold and work with them fully by having that relationship at least you take some of the danger away from yourself if it is going to come to three on three or you know if they're looking to throw votes somewhere even if you have the majority even if you have the advantage of you're going to get the votes angering people is not a good idea reaching out to people extending that Branch friendship all that sort of thing when there does come to a vote even though you might win the target's not coming your way right so it's always a good thing to make friends in this game I agree and I was kind of shocked that at this point

12:15 Kendra and Jake have not even had a conversation yet and this was the first moment that they were sort of talking I guess this was the first time they talked strategy and they would have just had like very casual superficial conversations up until this point Andre says it's easy to get wzy around the fire or woozy around the fire the smoke is blowing even if the smoke is blown the other way the problem is I watched this twice the smoke was blowing in his face while he was inhaling and we could hear it on the camera that's the problem I'm like not a good idea he doing a cleanse he's like he's trying to like bring it bring it in yeah Cody says anxiety in the jungle that's what my mama calls the show that's so true easy not to get emotional when you're easy not to be emotional when you are hungry I feel like I get emotional when I'm hungry like I go through all what's the what's the three stages of grief that Emily Works through I work through that anger grief very quickly when I get hungry so I can kind of relate with Emily on that I love my food cash says I was wondering if maybe blowing at the fire made him pass out I've seen people faint from blowing balloons yeah I think it was inhaling the smoke I really do think that's what got him and he just didn't know that shouldn't do that yes Danica please everybody if you're watching this at any stage we don't normally plug at this early on but consider subscribing

14:56 Joked haha I wasn't really looking I was is joking and this time he got used as a scapegoat for with Austin and Drew which I thought was kind of good like there wasn't really any way out of it looked super awkward you ran off like a weirdo like it wasn't great by Drew but if you're going to bring it back and try to explain something somehow throwing sefue under the bus yeah that man is innocent and still catching Strays yeah that's funny Chris look he doesn't have the he doesn't have the connections he's not in that four he's out there he's throwing himself out there he's definitely a great scapegoat to throw under the bus at all times I think because he doesn't really have the outs to sort of get away from that bus but I do like that they got busted but eventually they kind of went all right like okay you got me you got me like we kind of they didn't fully they didn't fully own and we'll talk about that because it's to come up as we go through the episode here but yeah they kind of got caught in my mind and it was interesting to see how hyper aware D is at in this moment and the fact that she's working closely with Julie that she says halis and Austin and Drew have been

16:16 Spending a lot of time together doing their own walks we're supposed to be a for so you know they're really on to it and I feel like that the boys are going to struggle now that they've caught them in a lie once to lie to them in the future because they're going to know what it looks like if they lie to them so it's going to be interesting to see how that sort of moves forward but I do think overall I've got some thoughts about what happens later on in the episode as well so I'll keep it for then when we come back to them let's move to the reward challenge the reward challenge we get to see a reward challenge which is great because we don't get to see that on every single episode sometimes we hear that they have them but it doesn't make the edit because the episodes are so short they've got to explain the four or five steps to the advantages a lot to us in the episode so sometimes they don't have time to show us something like a reward challenge but we get to see it here they have to race from the ocean race to the beach run underneath an obstacle and catch a ball which is a classic Survivor Challenge and then they have to land three rings on a Target I can kind of understand after this challenge why Saia started worrying a bit about Caleb because they were anticipating a swap that's what I heard in the ex interview for SAA coming very soon and Caleb Absol abolutely dominated this challenge he was so far ahead of everybody else which is great for my man Caleb who just happens to also be my number one

17:36 Draft pick if he does make it to a merge maybe he's going to be that challenge Beast we haven't had in a long time maybe he'll be the Mike Holloway or the you know win his way to the end and win the game or become like the new Joey amazing or the Aussie on the season who knows but at this stage it's putting Targets on his back because he was that far ahead he didn't miss a shot when it came to throwing any he had the very interesting underarm technique as well Kahuna would you gone for the underarm or would you have swung the ring if you were out there I think you kind of do what feels natural at first and then adjust and Caleb saw that it worked he didn't miss the first time so he just kept on going with it you know what I mean like if it ain't broke don't fix it and that's a really good approach like a lot of that a lot of times if it's these challenges that well first of all good on Survivor forood like it's kind of a change up like I guess not the same puzzles and all that sort of thing they're trying different things but still classic Survivor challenge with a little bit of a Twist I guess so yeah like you it's all experimentation you got to try first you don't know what's going to work you don't know all that sort of thing but I think obviously he showed that underarm is the best he it starts out with throwing the ball on the ramp which is a very do you think Tony would have handled this I feel like Tony

18:56 VOR would have gone for the Mad SW if he had to do it like I don't feel like he's got the control to do the underarm you know you know what all I kept thinking of like and I feel really bad about this but I was like oh my gosh I wish I saw Brandon do that rope thing from like I know he's gone there's no way I'm really he's already out of the game and I'm still taking shots and I'm feel really bad about that but I was like they're so lucky he wasn't there right like that's the only reason why they would have stoen there they would they would have stoen on the beach right now if the game's finished then they would have still tried to finish the challenge see get like all tangled up and like actually stuck in the ropes and they would have had to like try to get him out I feel bad about that but yeah there's a basketball challenge at the start like get the ball up and it's kind it's not a hoop but get it on the ramp and then the Hoops he's tossing the underarm as well last week Caleb mentioned that his team was like the Cavs after LeBron left this guy's got basketball even though he's Canadian he's got like this whole basketball thing going on and everyone knows that in basketball the free throw shot was it's statistically proven even though no one in the NBA likes to do the underarm shot simply because it's called The Granny shot it doesn't look cool basketball you look cool right but statistically it is a

20:16 Higher percentage shot to do the underarm toss you get it a little bit softer it bounces less you can get the angle a little bit better so maybe Caleb's got this figured out's he's doing granny shots and it worked 100% worked for him I do want to give a shout out to Emily who did end up proving herself in this CH challenge as well she went through from what we saw and one go underneath the Rope structure caught the ball and they moved on a few other people who stood out for me Kelly was really impressive in the early stages of this challenge as well so I think she could potentially be a little bit of a challenge beast when it comes to some of the athletic things later on and then obviously your normal people that you would imagine would do well like your Austin and your D they did really well as well Andre Lee coming in with the $5 thank you so much Andre Lee we really appreciate it goes straight back into the channel as we continue to grow it here thank you for being such a great supporter of the channel we really appreciate that and we take note well overall Lulu finally gets to win something here and they do get the big fruit platter Kahuna so they've got some nice fruit that they can go and enjoy get that sugar rush back at camp but more importantly they bring in the raid which I don't remember the last time we saw a raid and my memory isn't the greatest so Chad forgive me if it has been quite recent but it's really good to see them bring the raid

21:36 Back because it can always create some interesting moments and Lulu gets to the side to take one of their players over there and KB after just dominating the challenge immediately puts his hand up and says let me go I want to go do it which I guess is a good thing because you want to create those Bonds on the other side but I guess when it comes to Threat Level man agement he's really putting himself out there at this stage Kahuna did you like this move from him what did you think about how this went down I do think he was a good choice for it because he like we saw and this is as far as Threat Level management this is the opposite of what to do but we saw how carismatic how friendly how like the salesman in him really sort of came out and yeah it's like he was he's the best choice for it as far as what he can get out of it for the tribe but I mean the old classic conundrum of Survivor is as soon as you leave what are people going to do when you're gone and saaya took that opportunity after seeing what like what you just said he just dominated the challenge looking amazing Caleb is just Caleb is a bright ray of sunshine and that's really hard to hide you cannot hide bright shining lights you know what I mean so he's going to do well in his performances as

22:56 Physically he's going to be friendly he's going to be social like and it helped him this episode obviously by getting out to The Raid and seeing how he can interact with people some people saw through it a little bit so you know some were like ah he's coming off as a little bit too slick again D and Julie like again they've just got the best reads at this moment I feel like I'm loving my picking d by the way like he comes up like you have really beautiful eyes so I think I'm pretty sure throughout the course of this little segment multiple people I think it was three or four I heard I don't remember I didn't watch it twice but so many people called him a player a player as in pla y ER he's here to play the game but when he went up to D like you have really beautiful eyes like he's a player with an A on the end he's a player the yeah like he's a goodlooking dude and he's you know coming around being all sweet and stuff like that too so Caleb's got a lot going for him which is like you said Threat Level management is one key skill that maybe at the moment he's lacking because he's got everything else and he's going over like I also like that he picked Drew when he had that conversation with Drew and he's obviously so friendly

24:16 So charismatic Dian Julie saw through it but other people just told him everything that he wanted to know he wanted to know you know what I mean like but there's a lot that happened yeah there's a lot that happened here like firstly I want to say drew for me has been the surprise package of the season I said it last week I'm going to continue to say it I know that some people were you know like Jake said some people didn't like him in the beginning of the Season or said we don't need someone like Drew we could have had Drew is like the only sort of nerdy archetype on this season and I would have been happy because he's not your classical nerdy archetype like he kind of fits in with the cool kids and he's like I don't know he's like a hybrid you know because again he did a lot of things right in this moment and clearly they vibed at like a personal social connection level where Caleb felt like he wanted to help Drew you know which was interesting to me the fact that Drew l a little bit of information slip here as well hats off to Caleb clearly they were vibing at a level where they were like we can work together and I think that this thing is going to come back now that we know Caleb survives this round it's going to come back in the future where Caleb potentially will find a home with this Alliance like yeah they'll know he's dangerous they know socially he probably shouldn't get to the end because he can win this thing if he gets there but he's now got an in because he lets Drew have

25:36 This special new advantage that he gets in the game which allows them to get a vote back if they've lost it smart off Caleb to go to the one person that he knows went on this journey so potentially could have lost their vote Drew then says no I didn't lose my vote but I got this Advantage which means that I can leave at any time up until FS the merge or when there's 10 players left in the game and they're starting to share some information and there's Goodwill being sort of bought between them and then even more smart about Drew using an advantage that he didn't even gain to go and build more Goodwill with both D and with Julie because immediately he's like hey I got this thing Caleb wants to work with us he's given me this now it's ours to use obviously Austin is happy because this is going to be something that could save him in the game I just thought it was good gameplay overall because Drew was sort of using something given to him to buol back trust that they just lost earlier in the game and the edit was confusing in that sense where I was thinking maybe de and Julie was we're seeing the story because I'm always thinking why is the story showing us that they're not believing Drew and Austin and I thought it's because D and Julie will get the better of Drew and Austin at some point but them recovering in this episode shows awareness from them as well so it's still very 5050 in regards to where that Dynamic is going to go moving forward in the game but the raid brought so much great elements to it the different

26:57 Trinkets that they've thrown in the game for once it actually worked in a social and strategic way which made sense for me as a viewer watching it which I really enjoyed yeah like I also really like that in picking Drew like if you look at Caleb right he's obviously very athletic he's good-looking he's charismatic he seems like he's coming across as an allaround great guy and I think in Seasons past and maybe this is I don't I don't know as an Australian I don't want to offend anyone but maybe this is like I wonder if Caleb was American versus Canadian if his personality Cons considering all his traits may have been a little bit different he may have been the more jock egocentric like Chad type guy because he is so charismatic he's so likable he's so he can play sports he's athletic all that sort of thing he's in sales that would usually come in a very stereotypical kind of package sometimes right like because the ego can get to you when you're good at a lot of stuff but he reaches out to Emily he reaches out to Drew and I think they're two people that would be almost the opposite of what a stereotypical Caleb archetype would go towards we usually see the Bros go together or the strong

28:17 Alliance or the strong guys or whatever it is but he's like reaching out to the people on the fringes or with Drew at least looks like he may be an awkward kind of nerdy type and not really that Alpha type so he's getting them and I hope it's because he's a genuinely nice dude and you know in high school he wasn't a jock that shove people into lockers and he would reach out to other PE to the you know the nerdier types or the people that weren't necessarily A obvious fit and that's a great move it's smart it doesn't seem like an obvious connection but it's also people that might be a little bit more vulnerable in Emily and showing how that works as well so a lot of really smart moves across the board from Drew from d and from d and sorry from Drew and Austin for bringing them back in for Caleb the way he chose and the way he handled it all a lot of really high level type of stuff we're seeing here which is exciting a lot of great soft skills being used here by them I do want to bring up Cash's comment here saying Caleb gives me Cody from 43 Vibes I totally agree with that Geor Jette says was Flint off limits to Caleb I feel like maybe it was because otherwise it would have been the obvious move of this stage Chris also says Caleb starting off by telling D she has pretty eyes is such an OMG moment this episode had true comedy I thought it was

29:37 A little bit cringe to be honest it was it's kind of funny because you could just tell D was like what are we doing here are we like speed dating are we playing Survivor what's going on Ki skirt saying I had Caleb and Drew as my top pick so it was nice to see them talk about working together yeah I love that de obviously both in my team so hoping that there can be something there for the future of my draft The Fury tiger says Caleb is playing well in many ways but is another player that doesn't keep their threat level low yes I think awareness and threat perception just isn't there for Caleb at the moment and we're seeing certain things which is interesting to me and we'll talk about it in the edit later on as well that makes me wonder if Caleb truly can win this season still very early days K SK says yes that's the wor Fury tiger wolf Danica says why did Lulu not take the Flint or did they just get the Flint automatically when they won the reward challenge I don't remember that being mentioned no they did not get it they were still playing for Flint because I watched the episode twice when they went to the immunity challenge Jeff said Lulu you've yet to get your Flint so you still need to get it from winning an immunity first time seven days without Flint so that's rough because that made me think like how are they like surviving because and then I remember they said that the water there they do now give them bottled water in a container at the well so they don't have

30:57 To cook the water like they used to back in the day you know you know what interesting chenel was on the F and Apostle podcast right and I didn't listen to it to it all but I heard something that came out of was Chanel saying that in reviewing this name dropping just like Bruce guys he's name dropping like Bruce Chanel actually came out and said whether it's a modern Survivor thing or not but fire is completely overrated nowadays yeah and like it's not necessary at all because they have water they get given multiple sets of clothes with long sleeve short sleeve because Tyson was saying that apparently one of the hardest things was that they gave you shorts with a long sleeve or short sleeve with pants and you had to kind of choose what you want cold and what you want warm and that sort of thing but now they look after them that little bit more which makes fire a little bit less important than it used to be I guess like Palm FR with Bruce as well right like you don't need that yeah this is a waste of time Jeff wouldn't like this information to be getting out from Chanel because it's the toughest season ever that's what we're do in 26 days now you know it's a lot more tough Aruna says late but glad to have caught the live welcome here at the life ownness she also said if they had gotten the Flint for

32:17 The winning the reward challenge then subur wouldn't have had to burn the idol at tribal that's right Erin welcome to the live says could only win Flint by winning immunity Dan says that was what I was wondering Chris now how were they getting water yep fire not needed for those who like sushi yeah I'm not a big raw sushi person myself to be honest with you so I would be struggling I'd be eating a lot of coconut I do love coconut so I'd be on the coconut diet when I'm out there so probably I think a lot of people go into Survivor liking coconut and by the end of the coconut diet they're like yeah I want to move on from this but we do need to move it on here let's move into the Lulu conversation that happens while Caleb is at the other camp at Reba we have all of the Lulu sitting there enjoying their reward and Saia and sha really sub meins the fact that they're each other's number one in the game this is the first time that we've sort of seen that in between the three that those two are the closest and maybe that is also a reason that Caleb started looking at other potential Avenues because he noticed that Bond was really strong between the two of them they bring Emily in they tell Emily that they're going to potentially go after Caleb for the reasons that we mentioned Caleb is a person that is going to be a threat later on in the game up until this point SAA in my opinion is doing a lot of things right she is playing the game to win it she is worried

1:07:02 Sides or do something different so it might be a big episode for Jake and confessionals hopefully he doesn't go home because of that could help Jake a little bit on the points front but lots and lots of potential here I think the only dud I've got in my team right now is probably sefue based on what we've sort of seen up until this point but there is still potential for him there to become a player or at least have like a great edit or personality that can shine through at a later stage CU clearly he's got a big personality we're just not seeing it so with SAA gone now I've got a chance to close this week don't I catch up a little bit you do you do have a chance you've got a few people there that can still bring you good points Austin and D are definitely the two that are carrying you the most but I mean Kelly is seen as a bit of a strategic Mastermind Kendra slowly but surely getting a little bit more the big thing for you is it's either going to go really well with the three girls or really bad it could be it could be like a backto back yeah you know sort of elimination of the likes of a because I still feel like Cura to me is going early because of the fact that she's so tunnel visioned on Bruce that's why that's my read at this stage unless she wins and Bruce goes yeah you know unless she gets it the way she wants it so we'll see possible all right that's it here for this week
