Survivor 46: Episode 13 FINALE Review

0:13 [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] welcome back to the nullified take channel for one last time here for Survivor 46 we are back to talk about all of the action from this absolutely crazy season crazy finale as well I'm joined by The Three Amigos Kahuna Jake and coach Drew is with me and I'm your host Chris it was an interesting season I'm very interested to know what people thought about the finale what people thought about the season in its totality obviously last week I couldn't jump on the live but Kahuna and Jake held down the fort so I didn't even get to talk to them about the crazy news that Australian Survivor will have a USA versus

1:33 Australia season which I'm very excited about and I think there will definitely be some offseason content we will have to talk about it in detail here on the channel but for now let me say hello to Kahuna how you doing sir doing well man doing really well you know I'm feeling good that you know survivors come to an end again because I don't know the season was so up and down so all over the place I'm still shook as to how I actually feel about it I'm not sure if I love it if I hate it if I like somewhere in between but give us give us where you're at give us where you're at the beginning of this podcast I think I should do a temperature test as we start this and then we'll do another temperature test at the end of the podcast to see if you've changed your mind or not so would you say at this state you're up or down on the season I'm putting you on the spot here kuna season as a whole down definitely down I'm with you on that as well I'm also down yeah it certainly was picking up and had a lot of momentum towards the end and I feel like I've got a sour taste in my mouth with the with the final episode so that's like I'm like oh it was actually redeeming itself and now I don't like the last episode so I'm not sure yeah I'm with you I'm with you and I wonder if it is a thing about us you know looking at it with a very

2:53 Different length it'll be interested to know what our American compatriots think about this season as a whole so Jake you know how are you doing and where are you sitting overall and no sitting on the fence on this one I'm making you decide are you up or down on this season and why okay well first of all I'm doing good Chris it's good to find you it's good to finally talk to you about the show after what has it been like almost a month I think I was on the podcast last week with Kahuna but you weren't there I'm gonna be honest I'm up on the season if you're putting me on the spot right now like I'm when I was in Hawaii I didn't watch any of the episodes and then so then I binge watched three episodes straight from up till the penultimate and then I waited a week and watch the finale I was really into the show during those episodes and so just when you ask me like my gut my gut's just telling me like I'm up on this season honestly might be my favorite of the New Era I know there's the pre there's the Prem merge you know was but let's be real but let's be real the pre merge of every new era season has been you know so is it really

4:13 That different from the rest of them it's a bit different because it has Banu but in terms of like it being weak that's not really that unique so yeah I just have been really I've just really enjoyed the last like five episodes was like top tier Survivor to me okay interesting well we'll definitely be talking about it in further detail obviously basically all the episodes that I didn't podcast on with you were the ones that I really the ones that I didn't like so much yeah and I think I think we were like kuna said we've been up and down on the season as a whole there's been good moments I just don't think in its totality for me it Stacks up and I'm surprised to saying best season of the new era when 45 was just last season and I think that was definitely the best season of the new era and I don't think that can be disputed also had a really good winner at the end that I think that you can that's my opinion I saw I see coach Drew's like coach Drew's busting like his lens is fogging up at the back there like he's cooking something up for this one I got to go to coach Drew and let him know and this is what I love about Survivor by the way we all have different takes we all have different opinions there is no right or wrongs here but I have to be true to what I'm thinking and feeling as well and I'm not very high on it as a whole but Drew welcome to the channel it's good to have you here my friend what are you what's your thoughts

5:33 First time on the channel right into for this for this season I think did you come on for this season yes for this season yes yeah first time on the channel for this season and I'm putting you on the hot spot what are you thinking of this season as a whole I think it's top two new age New Era Seasons with horrible pre- merges and great merges I put in either two camps they're either vanu which is good in my opinion or they caraman which is bad and I put this in the Vanuatu part of that as far as like yes the premerge and the bonu of it all is very just I don't care like I felt for him at first and it's like okay I think I might be done here I might be done and then the merge hits and I would say that basically from the Hunter episode until the finale I thought it was great TV like I was actually invested I was having fun trying to figure out who the winner was going to be I thought there were you know moments where it could be mostly anyone and I think that the finale gave us you know some very compelling story arcs of at least three of the five that were there so I'm excited to see how everyone at least felt about the finale certain things that happened there yeah and that's definitely what we want to get into as much as we can yeah Sarah says I

9:34 Bully I don't feel like he was arrogant I don't feel like he was a bully but again I can see why a lot of people think that because a lot of people on the cast didn't like him and I think if everybody's saying he's bad then it's it looks that way but I just didn't see it in his actions personally Drew you and I actually had a chat about this off air because I know you weren't on the channel much this season like we said you know and we were both big fans of Q like you remember I said love q was Q when Q left I feel like something inside of me died and the rest of the season just wasn't as entertaining for me anymore I won't say part of died because it was like okay we know that we got enough from q that we're going to see him again and yes at the beginning of the Season where he's sitting there telling Banu you're my Philip Shepard and I'm Boston Robin I'm like all right that's a tad bit arrogant I'll give it to you but you know once again what happened at the beginning of the season when oh there's not going to be any villains and then we get a compelling anti-her oh no I won't call him anti-hero an anti villain and Q and everyone immediately online is like we hate this guy we hate this guy it's like what do you want like if you want villains they're giving it to you here and we'll talk about somebody else that did something very villainous in this episode that everyone is kind of you know we'll get there yeah Mack is coming in with the

10:54 Take here saying I will say this season is better than is better than the last season for a simple fact that there was more craziness this season D pretty much ran a clean game which kind of thed the entertainment I still think there was some entertaining characters last season like I mean you had you had Drew you had seu you know there was like a lot of good characters that season so I wouldn't say it was completely boring I just I appreciate good gameplay and I like it when at the end of a season someone wins and I can say wow they played a good game and I think D probably played one of the more dominant games maybe the most dominant one of the new era and maybe why I'm High On That season like I am but I appreciate that different fans love different things and that's totally fine with me you know I'm not going to be here saying to Jake and Coach you guys are completely crazy for thinking this season was great that is their opinion they're allowed to have that's what makes it so fun when we go back and forth and we debate what makes a good season and what doesn't make a good season it's also why those winner rankings or season rankings are always so controversial because everybody has their favorite season that somebody puts too low on a ranking right but let's get into the finale here we start off very early on here with Maria and Charlie you know sort of will they or weren't they are they going to be targeting each other now for the rest of the season and

12:14 I think that you know it was interesting to see Maria in this point Jake because she's played a great game like for me I think what made this season kind of feel hollow is the fact personally I know some people saw Kenzie throughout the whole season and again I want to start this podcast off by saying if you've won the season you deserve it go home be happy with it please don't get upset like Michelle did because a lot of people didn't think she deserved her win enjoy it right my take is I would have Lov to see Charlie or Maria win this season because they dominated so much of this season Jake it was interesting even this finale was very heavy between Maria and Jake like who's going to pull the trigger when's it you know who's going to go out first but Maria just she ended up running out of like you know places to hide at this stage in the game just being as dominant as she is what did you think of her trying to scramble here and trying to paint Ben as this Mastermind Target throughout this episode that nearly worked I mean Liz the person who definitely would have won if she got to the finale she was sold on it yeah I thought I thought it was absolutely hilarious that like the person that gave that gave up on her puzzle in the middle of the challenge to help somebody else beat Maria was all of a sudden like hm yeah she's making some pretty good points you know even Charlie was considering it I know yeah and was that was that

13:34 Really real or was that just the edit you know trying to trying to make us feel like maybe there's a chance because you know I feel like they hate to give us like 100% certainty on things they always like to throw like a there's a 5 perent chance this might not happen guys so I don't know but it did seem like Liz was persuaded for whatever reason but going after Ben interesting as well like secretly he's this he's pulling all the strings like Ben yeah didn't do like the social aspect which he does do very well like say look he's just too likable like she did say charismatic but to go on The Mastermind angle for Ben is like the worst possible way to do it like there's no way buys that apparently Ben is saying in his ex interviews that Maria had been doing that the entire merge I can see was like was like whispering in people's ears like Ben there's more to Ben guys Ben's real sneaky not though he the problem and they all know it and I think I yeah she knew that too which is why it was like

14:54 Crazy that like in that moment they were like suddenly like oh maybe she's maybe she's right you know crazy opics wise he's still there at that moment and if she's been saying this all merge and all of a sudden we're sitting there final five and Ben is still sitting there all you have to do is say see I told you like there he is he's running this entire thing and it's also a great smokees screen for you and Charlie if you guys decide to get back on the same page you can paint someone else and everyone starts to look away from you two again but at this point like that was never going to happen yeah there was no Runway left but it was impressive to see her at work on her back making that move and people kind of buying it like I do think Maria is a top tier player and like Jeff said you know the problem with Survivor is as soon as you become that top tier player as soon as you become a threat we've seen it with the Jessies we've seen it with the Omars you get taken out before the end because no one wants to go into a finale with you because you've got an impressive game that probably could win the jury over and it was interesting to see play out one thing for me with you brought up Jake the whole thing about Liz helping Kenzie in the immunity personally I hate that I like I know people will sit on the fence on this and some people will be like it's all fear and Love and War you know you play a social game Survivor is a social game if you've got Social Capital then someone else

16:14 Can help you in the game that's Survivor right but I feel like in the essence of fairness and this is me coming from that Sports angle having been a really big sports fan my whole life it is you against the opponent not you against people from the like different teams playing against you it should be one V one in my opinion but what made me go at ease is that Maria couldn't care less you know and I was like why would why would I as a fan get upset about it if Maria doesn't even care about this kind of disappointed me that she didn't call Jeff out a little bit on that and be like hey you know like I think if that was Danny McCrae different story because the guy's a competitor he already called Jeff out on some beer previously but they're casting a certain type of person for Survivor these days and those are people want to see a few more people with a little bit of in them and it's one of the reasons I've been down on some of the casting choices that we've made within the new era sometimes so you know like give me more Danny McCrae give me more people that are there to win at all cost I was disappointed kuna how did you feel about that as someone who also watches the challenge where like that happens all the time excuse my French also like Gabe mark it up again what's the time stamp mate because it's happened in Australia they' done this on Australia and that's why I was like I was surprised at how

17:34 Shocked everyone was in the online community like this has never oh my gosh what's happening like I can't believe it's never been done before I'm like it has been done before like was it yeah that's right against Simon they stacked up on him they had three people going up again like bringing their buckets for him and stuff so it's like I don't if the rules are there they're playing within the rules like I don't like it either like from a like just on paper but like I appreciate them seeing that there's nothing against it in the rules and then doing whatever they could to get Maria out of the game like I appreciate that like strategy well we're allowed to so why aren't we doing this like but I do think the producers need to make it clear that can't happen if you don't want it to happen I don't know if they wanted it like because I feel like Jeff would have just said hey stop it no you can't do it when he puts his he puts his fist down or foot down when he needs to and they let it go so I don't know maybe it's part of the game for them you know Jeff said that if he would if Liz would have stopped and said hey Jeff is it okay if I go down grab my plank and help Kenzie he probably would have said no but because she

18:54 Just did it then he's like okay you're not you're not calling on me to make a judgment so I'm just gonna yeah kind of step back I'm gonna play yeah like I said I felt better about it because Maria was okay with it in the end I would have been pissed like L if I was out and somebody did that against me same here yeah Sarah saying you can help people referencing obviously Albert who helped Sophia back in the day as well right was trying to get Albert to help and Jeff was like nah can't happen can't happen okay yeah interesting yeah but again he actually called for it right a get over here and help me as opposed to can come help me and Jeff yeah interesting well yeah in this moment it worked and it played out controversial moment for me in the finale that Maria went out that way but Kenzie was quite far ahead and who knows she may have still won that without the help as well Scott said in the moment I loved seeing Liz helping her but hearing postseason discussions I feel it should not be allowed in future Seasons I don't like it I don't like it when they do it in the challenge either the challenge they have the Arenas where people go up against each other one V one and then you have people on the arena shouting out the answers to puzzles or math or things like that to help

20:14 The person they want helped in the arena to beat the other person to go home so I just never have been a fan of that Sarah said Chris you didn't read the first part of that I said Sophie tweeted now you can help referencing her and Albert it was yeah sorry sometimes there's so many comments coming in guys like I just pull them up as I can I appreciate all the comments and we'll pull them up wherever we can and we'll sort of acknowledge it but yeah I'm with til Trooper here I would have been Furious and does says that Liz followed the Boston Rob rule book by never asking basically and just doing I'm sure it is one of the many rules that Boston Rob does have in that book of his but you know what a what an interesting conclusion to Maria's story here on Survivor Drew what's your thoughts on Maria do you think that she's someone we see come back again or is she unfortunate that she's in that archetype where there is a lot of woman that probably is like I feel like in her age range maybe and that similar archetype the mom that potentially could come back for season 50 or do you think she maybe just did Enough by almost getting that four immunity on that would have put her in an elite group where do you sort of sit on it well po let's just assume that 50 is going to be post 33 until 49 the women that fit in that archetype that I feel like they would give heavy consideration

21:35 Would be would be either Chrissy or her and I feel like in this situation because she was also looked at as a social and strategic threat along with the physical threat while Chrissy you know some people were rubbed the wrong way is and I guess people towards the end were rubbed the wrong way by Maria but that's after the season I do feel like it'd be a two-horse race in that spot so I do think she has a really good ending up there and I do feel like people would want to see her again because of all the backlash that she has gotten over the last few days I do feel like if she were to go out again people she would be a very compelling character for people to either really cheer for or really roote against yeah that's 100% that's a great point I personally love the villain tag that she got with like a q I think that if Q comes back there's a story there for her in season 50 where it's someone she's worked with before and I know that Survivor loves carrying stories over from one season into another so I think she's got that and I think Q to me if we looked at this cast who's the biggest lock to come back it's got to be Q right I just don't see anybody else that made as big of an impact as he did in the season I would almost argue has made as big of an impact on the new era of Survivor as Q like there's a few definitely that come to mind but again I don't know if winners are coming back

22:55 Because if winners do come back then there may be a mar that could come back as well I think she made a pretty big impa as a new winner as well D is someone that I think is very solid as a winner as well but yeah I think Q just as a character is up there Jake who else do you think from this season based on what we saw in the finale and that would you say they're probably in the in the running to come back is Charlie someone that you know comes to mind or do you think he's going to be in some stiff competition with his archetype for instance if he was to come back I don't know about Charlie I think I think the production team really likes him so I sort of lean towards saying that he could definitely come back and I think I don't know I don't know I think that they might agree with a lot of the fan base that maybe he should have won you know so maybe they you know they like to I feel like they like to bring those types of people back you know that they run ups at War maybe in the future yeah I could be definitely a chance there what did you think of Maria's vote though in the end while we're talking about her let's talk about all of it Maria turned her back on the young lad Charlie at the end and did not vote for him and she went into a reason afterwards which to be honest with you I kind of lost a little bit

24:15 Of my train of thought when she was explaining it was based on I feel like Kenzie was more deserving of the money and she was going to use the money better or something like that I think was her reasoning towards the end but yeah what did you think of the fact that Mar didn't end up voting for him when she wanted to go up against Charlie as well like there definitely shouldn't have been any kind of like H feelings she was planning to make that move at the same time Charlie did me personally I'm kind of low on the fact that she turned it back on him at the end and it could have been a draw I hated it I hated it for yeah for the potential outcome there because I just I laugh deep inside when I' imagine Ben having to make that decision I think he may have like just melted on screen if he had to like choose between Kenzie his nightm friend and Charlie he number one the entire way he would have just like it would have been such good I don't think it's guaranteed by the way Charlie wins I'd really don't I think it could have been a out and said he would have chosen Charlie but then he also followed up with it and saying like but I don't know I was so emotional out there I may have gone up and you know we've been waiting for a while yeah he's like hopes he writes it by accident again

25:35 Yeah or like he like thinks that he's voting out Kenzie but for her to win look I really did not like it Maria and it's not because she chose Kenzie I just hated the reasoning for it like what is she talking about the fire in the eyes when she completed the is that all it comes down to now is just doing the fire like if you do fire Anno the hell out of me like discounting the entire season's worth of getting to that point he's like oh I saw something in her eyes when she did the fire like it get out of here like especially because sit back don't play any strategic game throughout the whole season sit back throw yourself into the fire challenge at the end and just be like here's my resum like it annoys me even when people say that fire making is a resume Boulder like I just don't agree with that we have the same argument when gaer won right and I'm like everybody knows with gaer I like gaer I'm happy with his win but I from the start even when Gable won that season I said definitely that should not have been the criteria like they should not have been judging who's the girl again that they went up against in the end cassid Cassidy they should not have judged Cassidy based on the fact that she didn't go for fire I didn't agree with it then and I don't agree with it now that Charlie was also made to

26:55 Feel like he should have gone down there to do the fire when he had a really good game up until that point fire should not have been the deciding factor and it ended up being the deciding factor in Maria's eyes where she actually ended up voting for Kenzie it's crazy to me that is the thing now that determines winners to me that's a sign that you know to use a very bitter Survivor player I definitely don't want to become a bitter Survivor podcaster saying that the game is flawed is flawed like we need to get rid of I don't think it's a reason I think it was a BS reason had actual reasons and she just used that as a c elaborate on that elaborate on that what do you think her reasons were do you think she had bitter feelings towards I don't I don't even think it was bitter feel and I think the more the more telling thing is when Jeff asked raise your hand if your vote switched tonight and Maria is one of three people that didn't raise their hands which means I do feel like she had always planned on voting for Kenzie now I don't know if it was stuff you know if he was overly bit because I also everyone kept trying to label her as a woman hater all season so it's like maybe you know maybe if I vote Kenzie people will look at me as you know not this or you know there could have been bitter feelings there I just never I didn't get that buy but I did feel like when she was saying

28:15 The fire in Kenzie's eyes thing I'm like I don't think I buy that I don't think no ever voted for somebody for that reason before nobody has ever that's like a new concept that I've never heard of yeah the fire in the eyes says I think if Charlie would have gone to make fire and one Maria would have just found another excuse so basically agreeing with what Drew saying here they put it in the edit though what we're missing is that I felt so uncomfortable how long it went in at the fifth Tribal Council when Maria went home how long Kenzie glazed her up for he was saying how amazing she is great competitor and they kept it in the edit for ages like what is happening why are you talking about her like she lost she's going home why is she getting so much praise right now and then it actually worked that's Kenzie social game was to glaze up Maria in the final trial before it and say how amazing she was and how much loved her and I had to get you out it's just too much respect we had to double up on you we are so good Maria right and she even told her that when she tried to and I think that's a subtle skill that you know giving Kenzie credit cuz she does have a very good social game and I'm happy for her that she won she it sounds

29:36 Like you know she's going to put that money to good use in her personal life and the one thing I will give keny as well while we're on her I need to talk about this I freaking hate it now when everybody goes to the finale I'm going to put this into not for profit I'm so righteous I'm going to do this no she went in there and said I want to put that money into my retirement I think I really I love that I really think that when Charlie said like yeah you know I have a few Charities that I'll probably donate to that looks sound it didn't sound yeah that wasn't real yeah I don't you know I'm sure maybe he would have you know it seems like he has from what I've read he has some passion for some of the law that he that he does but that did not come off as like genuine at all yeah this jury did not seem like they wanted to hear any type of BS sounds like BS then we're not gonna yeah we're just gonna time you and once the 30 seconds is up that was crap too see I'm so annoyed at this whole thing like I'm so annoyed at all that was crap that was crap can we call that out like with Jeff also doing it like 30 seconds from the jury and then at the end he's like ah explain your game in 30 seconds what we've spent like it felt like Jeff was over the season and just wanted to get it done with like did he run out of time like

30:57 Yeah I want to hear you have to say about it you know like 30 seconds get the a couple people's postgame interviews they're like no it was actually rushed while we were out there like they kind of said hey you we have to submit our questions beforehand we were given this much time and it felt weird like with the jury talking it's like okay they're not doing they're not no longer doing the outwit I'll play out last portions of it's like everyone ask a question so we can get out of here and I felt like if I know that at the beginning Kahuna brought that the finale kind of left a sour taste and I'm just like yeah I don't I don't agree but like the way that it was ran that way that the final tribal was ran was just like is this why can't we just go back to just asking question if we're GNA do this just let him get up and ask a question instead of just kind of sitting there and oh we're on a timer and it's like come on yeah to me to me it felt like you know and again probably it wasn't cuz Jeff's so passionate about every single season that he it could be the worst season in the history of the show and he'd still be like what an amazing season we had like that's his job right but it felt like production wise it felt like they were like let's wrap this thing let's get it done let's move on to the next season it didn't feel like they enjoyed the end of the season or that they were just tied it's on the back of two seasons shooting back to back so that could also

32:17 Have an effect on it obviously but it definitely came across it came you know when they get the reward just like is this the end of the cater budget like there was pudding in what like there was all this Stu and then pudding like clearly they just got that off the table where like lunch had finished and go should we give it to them or like it felt very you're right I didn't think like second season they just like we're done yeah let's see let's see what people are saying in the live we haven't checked in with the live in a while I'm going to go back and read some of the comments here Jay says Charlie will definitely be back he's the best of the young archetypes of the new era Zack Brandon Dwight Carson don't stand a chance against them I think Carson's also got but Carson's been doing some interesting things outside of Survivor I haven't followed it closely on social but I know there was some controversy with puzzles and I don't know if I necessarily want to see him come back and play the game with that kind of behavior being displayed and you know in the fandom Community I'm not going to be shading anybody on here you guys could do your own research but doesn't look good Dan saying you may be right but being the be versus potentially winning immunity to get the final four 1 million is worth the be the be the be somebody

33:37 Helped me here I might be missing something it was Maria didn't want to look like a or something like that I think oh right yes oh okay been potential winning imunity to get final for yeah it's worth it yeah 100% anun we need people who are less worried about social media and people like roasting them on social media we just need people who want to go there and win clearly it didn't it didn't help because she still is getting roasted on social media regardless like we said if people are gonna complain about not them not casting villains and then someone does something that is like I you can vote however you want and I'm actually fine with what she did you can't have someone do something villainous and then be like oh man I hate this it's like you were the ones complaining that they were going to stop casting villains and all of a sudden someone does this and Q does all his stuff and you can't you can't you What's the phrase have your cake and eat it to you or something like that but that's what you have a villain right like in wrestling when you get hate you have like if you're booing then it's good right but you can't say stop booing at them they're playing really good villains right now stop booing like the booing is part of being the villain like you know yeah Gabe's got a really good idea for a future Survivor Philippines

1:11:02 Here season period yeah first resing season since winners at War and it's on a very big milestone season right and then more than that is that Australian Survivor and we can talk about this a little bit as we close off the podcast here has just announced I think the biggest theme ever when you know Jeff's like Hey we're going to be announcing season 50 and then they're like Jeff hold your buff we're going to be announcing USA versus Australia so now there's even more pressure on season 50 to be good because a lot of fans already are comparing Australia and the US to each other a lot and there's a lot of you can be the most biased fan in the world and just be us only us to the soil but Australia Survivor is making some waves and you have to at least acknowledge that and by doing that season the pressure on season 50 is so much more Drew what your thoughts on it I don't think you've spoken about this on the channel at all well and it's the rumor Inu window for a while was when that the brief period that Australian Survivor was on Paramount plus and everyone was watching it the rumor was oh Jeff got pissed off and had it taken out no I don't know if I believe that or not but let's say that it was true let's say it was true now all of a sudden this thing that people have been clamoring for a while it happens
