03 Foreign [Music] [Music] [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] welcome back for this emergency podcast here on the nullify Tech Channel It's All Smiles at the moment but I know deep down inside we're all dying just a little bit with the news that has been released over the last week I've been aware of this for a while actually I think December November last year news started sort of reaching me of potentially Survivor South Africa being no more on mnet and
23 I even remember myself and Richard talking about that off air but now that we know that everything is out there in the open a semi-reputable digital news Outlet let out that survivors of Africa is not on the current m-net road map you know I thought it would be you know a timely thing for us to jump on here do an emergency live talk a little bit about what we know and also since I learned this news I've learned a lot more so there is a little bits that I can let in for people that are really worried about the franchise that maybe is not public acknowledge yet it's not out on some of the platforms yet and that's just sort of what I'm hearing through the grapevine and sort of what we're observing with what's going on but we'll keep a very close eye on developments when it comes to Survivor South Africa in the coming weeks and months because we've got to fight on our hands right now and you know what I what just what they say you know you've got to choose your soldiers wisely and for a fight as crazy as trying to get Survivor South Africa on a global you know streaming Outlet there is no one better than mad dog Mucky himself to recruit for that fight Mucky how are you doing I'm doing well I would say I'm doing so good but I feel like that's the sort of wrong theme we're going here I'm doing terrible you know I'm doing absolutely terrible you know I really love Survivor South Africa you know and
44 It's just the great characters I've had you know like all the great Seasons it's very fun and very new to watch you know like Survivor especially American Survivor has got the set formula in and all the seasons start to blend in together because all roughly the same but I personally feel the new season specifically right like this is 41 to 44 it all seems the same right exactly but I feel like you know especially from the reboot you know season six although to return of the outcast season 9 all the seasons have been so incredibly different you know like you've got you know season six season seven whereas one book Alliance you know sort of controlling the game almost even then there's so many great factions of Dynamics and then immunity Island and return of the outcasts you had so many different you know flip-flops you know different alliances different like massive moves happening and so yeah every season's so unique it's so much fun and yeah I'm really sad to see these yeah and I think that you know Richard we haven't had you on the nullified Tech channel for quite a long time because there has been this big break from Survivor South Africa and you're the regular co-host that I have one of my two co-hosts for Survivor South Africa sadly you know I didn't even reach out to Zoe but I know Zoe Works a full-time job and this is in the middle of the day over here in South Africa so she probably would have wouldn't have been able to jump on but if I can get her on to get her takes I'll definitely reach
04 Out to her as well and we'll have a separate chat but you know Richard Survivor South Africa is unique like Mucky said because we bring so many different cultures together you know South Africa is known as the rainbow Nation because of all the different cultures the ethnicities that live in that country and we've got a very unique flavor I feel like I know that they say that Survivor us now they are meeting certain criterias when it comes to diversity and things like that but I feel like sometimes we lose diversity and thought when it comes to surviving us even though people look different they don't necessarily think different but with South Africa not only do people look different they've got very different views on how to play this game and how to live life so you know how are you taking this news right now how are you feeling about the fact that we potentially could lose such a great you know franchise within the Survivor community I mean it's terrible views I mean even when I was talking to people like you know regular fans like they were freaking out because it's like you know you know people love the product they know it works and you know obviously hearing this news is a really huge shock but like even like how you said like the life is a rainbow nation everyone is different like even in a set of people with similar values they still have different personalities because of the different backgrounds they come from and if you look into the US they've started even costing people from Canada and most of
24 Them end up winning the show so it just shows how you know diversity and improve the show for the bit in the long run but obviously it's sad news but hopefully we can get into some hopeful less gloomy stuff on this podcast at some point yeah I'm gonna I'm gonna do my best I'm gonna do my best to alleviate some of the stress the one thing I can say since I started the petition and for everyone that is joining this live watching this later on go and check out this description to this video we've got a petition Link in there for people to go and sign this petition we've reached 300 people I believe now so that's still very much in the early days we want as many people like if you care about this franchise if you want this franchise to continue on you should be signing that petition you know because otherwise I question like there's a lot of fans out there that I feel like they're complaining about this thing they're like oh no how can we lose this great franchise but you know this is a way you can fight back and that's what I wanted to do by starting this petition I felt obligated as someone that covers the show as someone that has publicly said many times that Survivor South Africa is my favorite franchise to start this thing to get the ball rolling even though some people that I'm talking to behind the scenes seem not that stress and you know I don't know that's a good thing or that's a bad thing they're like Chris calm down like it will be okay you know ledou's brought this thing out of the you know from the nether regions still
44 Big Brother you know thing there but you know they brought it back and maybe they can do it again because laduce got that experience but this time he's got a really good setup where he's done a few seasons he's got Afrikaans behind him and people potential future investors may think that this is a product that they can easily pick up there's already a massive Global you know presence out there or people that follow the show globally you know this thing that's on template at one point it was on Amazon over in the UK it was on Paramount for a short period until you know I think Jeff got it kicked off there I don't I don't know if it was Jeff yeah didn't want the competition which to me is absolutely crazy when it comes to it and I could continue to run on about it but I do want to say hello to both Dylan free big Survivor South Africa fan I know Dylan has met many of the Survivor South African players I've seen the photos with him and Steffy and Dino and you know and that's the thing man like I feel like we're losing a franchise with the fans are so engaging they're always talking to the fan to the to the so the players they're so engaging with the fans they're always we're getting that and even from the production team we're getting a lot of feedback which you know it just really makes me sad I was a lot more heated I will say a couple of days ago so this is the calm Chris right now talking you know if you guys can't tell Andrea
05 Lee thank you so much for that five New Zealand dollars with the super sticker coming in hot like I always say Andre we really appreciate all the support you give us for all of our shows and for always jumping on and being an advocate for the nullify take Channel Kahuna saying Survivor definitely ran out of immunity well who knows they may they may like lerubota might have a super Idol in his pocket Mucky you never know you might pull out a super Idol yeah exactly you know LaRue is like he's an absolute mad lad you know like I think it was for Return of the outcasts I think like wasn't it the tribe names were like Star Trek yeah it was like Star Trek themed and stuff like that like the voting box I had was like that triangle and stuff like it looked sick and you can tell that you know LaRue himself is just such a massive fan of the show and he wants to do the fans Justice right and I think that's why he even had the theme premerges versus post-mergers you know it's been a constant themed of you know first boot season or a pre-mergers only season you know but yeah I feel like pretty much there's post-emerges it was the best of both worlds and it was a fantastic season in my opinion so yeah so for people who
25 Are not aware of what the news is and you're kind of new to this you're coming into this a little bit cold and I won't blame you because not everybody follows everybody news that is always dropping out there on Reddit or on news and things like that and specifically if you're a Survivor South Africa only fan I mean if you're only a fan of Survivor trick I should rectify the head you know because I don't know if survivors of America's Got Any only fans but if you only support Survivor South Africa you know you may not know about this news and basically it is behind a paywall which is so on the nose when you think about Survivor South Africa and South Africa being behind a pay to view channel so that the majority of South Africans can't enjoy it they also put the news about it being canceled behind a paywall but I have spoken to people who have read everything that is on there that have actually gone behind the paywall and I can tell you that the official news that is coming out at the moment is that they're saying that there was a massive drop and the viewership numbers from the previous season to the last season return of the outcast they're saying that it's 45 drop in viewership they're saying that there is currently no plans on the road map for survivors of Africa to be returned and when asked specifically by the interviewer well
45 When can they expect to see it again they kind of talked around that question and they said well there is international versions of the show currently on which to me richer doesn't sound good it sounds like they're basically telling us it's not coming back to emanate at least yeah it because I also read part of the article in news24 and yeah it seems very gloomy it doesn't look like they're going to be taking it in future and you know my hope is that like if the store is closed like other doors can be opened especially where you know obviously the show can reach you know larger you know places you know like you know the UK so on and so on without the geolog so it's obviously said news but I've heard that maybe you know other shows have also been cut off from you know mnet maybe you can talk more about that too yeah so there is a bit of information that I am hearing through the grapevine right now and basically what I'm what I'm hearing and I can't confirm and deny who's talking to me about this because obviously you don't want to you know talk about that but it sounds like there is a lot more going on than specifically Survivor South Africa and a ratings drop yeah what I'm hearing from my side is that mnet is also let go of other International versions of shows that
05 They used to do that used to be USA based so if you put two and two together you know if they're letting survivors of Africa go they're letting all these other International franchises go that they used to do in South Africa then it seems like there is a common denominator there and that is the channel itself imminent and what I would say looking at it from the outside not knowing a lot about it is that mnet has got some problems of their own I know that multichoice went through a massive restructure not that long ago and they've now got a new CEO that came in to run it the previous guy was let go that looked like it was due to Performance South Africa's got big issues and I've always said this that I don't think you know and I don't want to be you know I want to be ungrateful because mnet allowed for us to do exit interviews and things like that and the people who I've worked with mnet behind the scenes shout out to those people I don't want to mention them because they're not public figures but you know shout out to them they're always very kind to me when it came to doing interviews and things like that and accommodating us but imnet has never really fully to me felt like the right platform for a show like Survivor South Africa to be on because you know Mucky when it comes to South Africa you know this is behind a pay to view wall it's like putting it on sky on a page Channel and it's not accessible to the mass audience in South Africa and you know Richard you could talk about this a little bit from yourself as well so Africa's got big economical problems that
25 It's dealing with right now it's trying to get on the other side of this it's got high unemployment rate it's got a 40 unemployment rate so most people in the country can't afford to just pay this extra money to watch the show and we're basically cutting out a large portion of the country yeah so it's almost like I think LaRue talked a little bit about the costing pool like I think South Africa has a population of about 50 60 million yeah around there 50 million and for the people that actually subscribed on mnet I believe the numbers around 150 000 people and then the number of people that actually subscribed to the highest subscription which is the premium subscription is about much less than that so you know you can tell that there's a few group of you know South Africans that I booked number one watch the show and obviously when it comes to Casting as well only a group you know select group of people will you know obviously see a lot of what happens in the show so it's really you know a bit you know a closed Circle but like I said My Hope Is that with the development if the show is to come back maybe hashtag when not if I hope it reaches a much you know larger you know obviously
45 Viewership at that point yeah so currently there's no Paramount Plus in South Africa which I think is a massive issue for us because obviously Paramount Plus is a channel or is a it's a group it's an entity that also owns Survivor in the US they've got the rights to it through the CBS channel which they own Channel 10 over in Australia they're also on Paramount plus 10 players kind of part of this whole Paramount plus deal that's out there and I think that with that there's always the better likelihood like we've said in the future like in the past when people have asked us will this world event ever happen where we get survivors of Africa versus Australia there's always a good chance that it would be easy for them to do that because it's under the same umbrella you'd hope that there are some plans for Paramount to go in there and eat the lunch of a dinosaur like multi-choice and what they're doing with DStv in South Africa and with mnet they're cutting out a large majority of people and a lot of the times the streaming platforms are cheaper then watching DStv getting the satellite getting a decoder in there for the satellite all that stuff adds up and it's overpriced it's a it's a dinosaur model that no longer works and that's why I don't fully trust the 45 number that's being thrown out there they've never been open about they've never been open
05 About what the viewership is and I know for a fact that even speaking to people who are in the know last year about it they said they never got viewership numbers for Return of the outcasts they were never and this is even back to people who were working on the show they didn't see the numbers on a weekly basis to me it's crazy how you can produce a show you can be responsible for delivering on it if you're not getting the viewership numbers each week and you know they kind of blamed a little bit the four episodes a week monkey as something that potentially could have you know also because I know for me it was hard to watch all episodes a week and podcasts about it but you know when you're watching four nights a week on a channel like DStv or mnet Richard what was that like for you I know you're a diet fan you would have done in any case but what was it like for you as a fan and seeing people there in South Africa could you know do we have the attention span of that small audience for four nights a week when they when they did it in that format yeah it's totally tough to catch up with and I think you know mnet was actually I heard that mnet was actually responsible because they saw that same during covid they had to like re-change their model to sort of like cater for the new sort of like binging you know habits that have been you know going on so you know setting up the four episodes per week was kind of their sort of like remodeling of their identity and so on and I think even letting
25 Survivor go is one of their most expensive shows as part of you know that identity switch up at the moment but yeah oh because differently since covert the whole mentality of watching things has significantly changed right so now a lot more people are now on the bench right you know they'll find something on Netflix watch them one day watch it over a week and watch it over a week right and especially if it's quite short as well you know if it's like eight to nine episodes for example easy bam smash it out so I think it was a good idea maybe to have it as like four episodes a week because more people are in on the bench you know I grew up watching Australian Survivor and that is three to two nights a week right but I do think unfortunately sometimes you did get those weeks which are a bit of a long stretch where not a lot really happens right and quite often something that Australian Survivor does really well is that they sort of try to structure it where at least one episode a week is guaranteed to be like a big episode where there was a non-elimination or of a big player go something they really Amplified that one episode per week so even if it's if it is a bit of a dud you're still at least excited for something always so
46 Heavily impacted buy something yeah I think culturally South Africans are used to the one episode a week like that's kind of what they've always had for other shows these so I think selling the four episodes a week was tough for people to get their head around but then again if it does end up on a streaming platform the chances are they'll you know if they do it in like a Netflix format they could drop it in four bits or four or six episodes at a time that could potentially drop it all in one hit for everybody to watch at the same time one of the things I think you lose when you drop so many episodes at a time is that you don't give enough chance for a hype to be created online by people chatting about the last week what happened and what they think is going to happen the following week so I do think you lose out a little bit on that as well but I do want to bring up a very interesting podcast which Richard thank you for bringing that to my attention I listened to it today while I was in the gym trying to train for Survivor South Africa season 10 because it's definitely happening you know it's coming back yeah we got it we got to keep we got to keep fit for it guys because we've got to keep the hope alive you know this podcast here is interesting one it's a reality Escape pod which previous player is on there as well right yeah so PG is on there as well as one of the
06 Hosts of this podcast and this podcast happened in the beginning of May so very close to when the news officially broke out everywhere and there was a couple of interesting things that you could pick up and I highly recommend for anyone that wants to know a little bit more about LaRue Botha his journey where he came from and the reason that we all fight so hard for this franchise is because we believe in LaRue we believe in Henry we even in the Africans team who works on it behind the scenes because they've they're all fans they're Messer fans I mean LaRue Botha tried to get on the show multiple times you know and just couldn't get on because his partner his husband was part of mnet back then so there was a conflict of interest but thank goodness for us he didn't get on because ultimately he became the showrunner after doing content producing working with people behind the confessional side of it he talks a little bit about that's all very interesting but on this podcast Richard I know you listened to this as well it was very interesting because he said that there's things going on right now behind the scenes when they spoke about the global presidents people globally wanting to support the Channel people or the show they want to contribute in a way where they can pay for it I know us Survivor fans we're crafty we watch the show we find a way to watch the show if it's not available to us even if we have to do it through means that we don't necessarily want to we're going to find a way you know and
26 That's kind of what's happened with survivors of Africa because it's got so many fans globally but Luke spoke about it he said there's things coming there's things changing behind the scenes he clearly knew this was coming and he again said if not when he sounded positive about where the show potentially could go yeah I mean all of that is amazing news like I was panicking and like I said a lot of the fans were panicking as well but when I was talking to a few players I was talking to Amy a few weeks ago from season eight and she was very calm it's almost like she you know was very confident that you know obviously the show is in good hands and she's confident that like something will come up at some point and even listening to this podcast like reinforce that hope and sort of like relaxness to know that like something is in the works yeah it was it was an interesting lesson to hear him speak about the show again a lot of why he is so good at what he does is disgusting is how he puts the show together what he looks for in people when he casts you know so anybody that wants to go on to I think any of these franchises should listen to what they look for when casting I think that's a really helpful bit of insight that he gives there they talk about the fact that this show and this is something we've known for a long time has got a fraction of the budget that the U.S has like if you look at Australian Survivor it's about a quarter that's the rumors
46 That are out there and I believe he's they're about a 10 for something of the budget that yeah eight of what the U.S has and they just get so much done and they're just so good with putting these shows together and delivering a product that you know like he talks about the pressure of doing one of these shows Mucky when you do them and there is an international version such as Survivor us out there that have been on the air for 45 Seasons people that watch that show in South Africa or any country that they live in expect the South African version to be up at that level when it comes to the cinematography when it comes to the twist when it comes to the characters that they cast that's a very high bar for anybody to follow on and how do you think Ladue and the team has done when it comes to Casting the characters that they've casted in the last couple of seasons yeah it's been a it's quite an interesting thing to think about right because you know American Survivor you know as like as I mentioned it's got its formula right but when the new sort of franchise of Survivor starts it merely has to catch up to that right because if it was you know like this is one Borneo to like you know All Stars for example where a lot of it was just one tribe versus the other tribe no one would watch it because everyone's so used to the American version right so as a showrunner
06 You have to think okay what can we do just let's be you know the game up and we've seen an Australian Survivor there's non-elimination twists to sort of throw people off their feet but with South Africa it's just great casting you know like I think when it comes to like all-time best Survivor characters a lot of them would probably come from South Africa you know and some dominant players as well like you're Rob benatale most entertaining definitely chappies you know Marianne she's a great contestant as well yeah because most of Survivor is really about the people right it's not really about you know the twists the advantages or how the season goes it's really about the people that's why survivors what it is right because it's all about a social game with people so the people aren't interesting then people aren't going to find a show they're interesting right so yeah I feel like South Africa has really nailed its casting on pretty much all of its Seasons I've only seen six to nine like the whole season I've seen parts of season five but none of before just because it wasn't on any streaming services I can find but from the seasons I've watched casting's been 10 out of 10.
18 Almost everything yeah and I feel like that's one of the reasons I'm so disappointed here because we've seen the momentum that has been built up from season six going into season seven season six gave us one of the most unexpected outcomes of any Survivor season ever and gave us a little bit of an Insight I think into South Africans like we can fight each other we can be angry at each other on the street we can disagree on stuff but when it comes down to you know getting together at the end and agreeing to what we should we come together and it's all about you know like I don't want to give too much away for people that want to go and watch that season still but the most unlikely outcome and I think that unlike the outcome is due to cultural reasons and culturally how South Africans are very different and how we deal with conflict very different and I think that is a unique aspect that we bring to the show we even saw little bits of that with chappies and Kiran and Tyson we saw it with Steffy and Jack burger and Robin Telly you know these big blow up moments which is not it doesn't feel manufactured on South Africa it is authentic you know blow up some of these people have still got bad blood even after the game you know they don't necessarily like each other too much but it's something unique that you get on the South African show and I feel like Richard consistently
39 From season six going into you know island off Secrets going into immunity Island which immunity island is my favorite of the new era because it gave us chappies and suntoni you know and nessu which I was obviously a big fan of as well yeah to run was a mastermind you know it was just a good solid season with not many dads and then to end it potentially on a season like Return of the outcast where we only got to see half of the players come back that we thought would come back on a normal All-Star season not taking stabs at those ones that actually delivered on the other cars or the other tribe it just feels like we haven't seen the full potential of where the show can go oh yeah you know I mean you talk about season eight it was incredible and you know to think that like before that season actually happened there was rumors that like that season was supposed to be the All-Star season not necessarily the pre-merge versus post merge it was rumors about fans versus favorites as well there's a few rumors going around during that time yeah and you know and to hear that you know LaRue actually contacted one of the you know arguably the best old school survivor players like Ashley Hayden was like a huge thing like I hope that happened but even if it didn't I think this season actually delivered like the
59 Amount of good players that are in the show is ridiculous and I was even making a joke to Tina the other day that like if David George and Tony vlakos were casting this season they would have a hard time because like the quality was really up in terms of the casting and you know obviously with Return of the art class as well awesome winner awesome Castaways you know like Phil like Marion Tony the list goes on so you know hopefully you know there is you know a bigger trajectory you know after this after these three seasons yeah so a question that I have for either one of you we'll start with Mucky and then Richard you can also sort of chime in and then I'll try and give my own spin onto towards the end is what is what does literally do when he gets season 10 because when we listen to the podcast he said that he plans his Seasons ahead of time so you know I know that when I had a conversation with him about a year ago and this is not giving anything away when we caught up for lunch he said to me that he's got an idea for the next three seasons potentially in his in his mind so he's thinking three seasons ahead of what potentially could come what would they need to do Mucky in your mind for season 10 to be successful would it be an all newbie season would it be an All-Star season do they need to bring sports stars into they need to do the whole Champions versus contenders thing that Australia
20 Did to start to get people behind it what would be your you know if you could give advice to luru what would you do if you did get picked up by one of these streaming platforms I personally think just adding your boy sneaky Steve if I'm being perfectly honest does it sneaker Steve to any season it'll be 10 out of 10. now I just want to give a shout out before you before you go into shout out to sneaky Steve he commented on the reel on Instagram very upset about the fact that they removed Survivor South Africa so showing some love for the South African franchise sneaky Steve you're a real one okay monkey you go for it yes can we expect the next hour just talk about how much like great of we don't want everybody to leave we don't want everybody to leave the live okay all right now but yeah so I think so you've got two options right so they came back you know with season six Philippines you know like the big reboot and those are all newbie cast but that cast was like you know fantastic it was awesome but I think in this day and age where I mean you know obviously not for Australian Survivor but with U.S Survivor everyone's really wanting returning players to come back right it's been so long I think winners at Wars the last returning season for them and yes I've only just had you know Return of the outcasts but
40 I feel like you know if they come back you know for season X you know for season 10 why not just make a big all-star cast or even you know some of the American players you know some of the Australian players have been shown and expressed love of African Survivor so why not just do what a lot of fans been wanting to do like a big Survivor worldwide you know if it's you know South Africa against Australia against you know USA or if you have everyone sort of mixed for like International All-Stars or something I'm not sure but yeah I feel like you know you can those are the really two main options really either like a really big All-Star type season or just like another newbie player Seasons That's My thoughts yeah listen it's season ten it has to be big like there's no way you know and unfortunately you know I think I was talking to someone else that like I think for season 10 especially if it jumps onto a new platform it's a little bit risky to put that weight on I knew these to you know sort of like be sort of like the cost that makes people want to watch it on a new platform so in that sense you know I'd hope that maybe they go more or start out if not like or 50
00 Type and when I was at the finale I was having a chat with Marisha and Nicole and they had heard that like something in the Grapevine was that season 10 was going to be a big season so my assumption to that is probably might be like an All-Star Chat thing hopefully but I think that would be the best type of course to sort of like bring that shown a new platform and bring in viewers because they've been seeing you know obviously what things have in store yeah it's interesting I like the idea of crossover you know world's collide type of season I think we deserve to get that season at some point I don't know if season 10 is it because if it does end up landing on a new platform you want to firstly create Survivor South Africa's own identity and what it's going to be for future Seasons because it effectively could be season one reboot basically on a new platform you know so yeah not that I'm saying you forget about what happened before but I've I really feel like it's a tough one I wouldn't want to be in his position at this point because like you said it's season 10 but could be season one do you go all out again and bring people back do you bring chappies back for a third time after he's just played two seasons in a row does he play a third time you know it's a tough call to make and I don't know I know chappies would say yes every time if they ask them you know do you know back for a third time in a row like
20 There's some players who've just played twice you know what I mean so for them to come back and play again I don't think you can leave chappies out of an authentic All-Stars I don't think you can leave Dino out of it I don't know if you could leave Steffy out of it you know I don't know there's a few places Marion like this all players are really get full like so I feel like it's too early I really feel like it's too early and you say that a new cast may not deliver well why not bring people in that already claim to know a lot about the show let's get some of the podcasters to get in there and show what they got let's make it a true battle of the fans you know maybe in the future like that could be a potential idea where if you're wanting people who are willing to put it out there and show what they've got if you want people to respect what the franchise is as a whole this is my pitch to the production team put some podcasters out there put some fans out on the show because I think yeah the fire is there but Within These fans to deliver the only problem that you have is can you get a dynamic Enough cast and I think we've had many a conversation about this in the past if it was in the podcast realm you're going to have to bring people in that are Global you're gonna have to have Shannon Gus in there and she may not want to play you're going to have to have Alex in there from The Specialist she may not want to play you know like from the US but you'd
40 Have to look globally so again it might not be it could be a future idea yeah because we've never really seen in my opinion Mucky a true fans versus favorite season because a lot of the times in the years when they do fans versus favorites the fans are recruited they don't even know the players yeah now you're absolutely right bill so at the same time you get some amazing recruits you know especially talking to this morning but it didn't Reynolds there's still two of my favorite players of all time yeah and the only times they ever voted correctly was when one of them played an idol you know on the bottom of the entire way through but I think as well you know your problem with having a tribal podcasters or a season of podcasters for example right is that you get the sort of same mentality like what the recent American seasons are like you know because the whole big thing in the American seasons is everyone's a big giant super fan right you know everyone's you know studied the game like I complained I had and season 43 was you know no disrespect or you know or disliked with this player but Owen I think at the final nine or the final eight was like oh I statistically cannot win the game because I voted XYZ and according to the winners voting records I can't win like that and in my minor ticket yeah it was a crap you know to be honest to be honest with you monkey to be honest if you and I would not think about like
00 Both of us enjoy the characters on the show more than the strategy yeah Richard I could see him making coming like that analytical minding you know engineer he might make the calculation I would be the fool that gets dragged to the end like Philip Shepard and then I don't win because everybody can beat me easily you know I wouldn't see I'd be like the frog and the hot boiling water I wouldn't see the ax coming basically if I was out there you know but you know I think you just need to look for the right people but you've got a good point Mucky at the end of the day you know they're obviously you've got to look at can people deliver will they be able to you know do well if they do get the opportunity out there I just think it's a very tough choice and I'm not normally a fan of fans versus favorites it's my least favorite season I've always said that because I feel like fans are at such a disadvantage when they go up against previous players but I do think Richard there's at least half a tribe out there that they can bring back so I would not be surprised the fans business favorites is the next season if they get renewed somewhere where they can bring some people with experience in taking on some new players in the game that potentially you know that could bring numbers like if you saw Robin Telly back out there if you saw Nicole back out there if you saw some of these players back that we that we haven't seen for a while that maybe said no the first time then it'll be bad there's so many people that
21 Can still come back that did not come back for eternity Outcast so you know ladoo has left some bullets in the chamber when it comes to you know what he can do in the future now another thing that we sort of didn't explore is the fact that because the show is so cheap you know there's so many platforms that can really benefit from having this show out there and the thing that really annoys me guys is like I know both of you actually Richard finally I could talk to you about this I couldn't talk to you about this when you were on the podcast previously but you've become a challenge fan you've become a challenge fan since the last time we spoke yeah I'm still watching the current season I'm loving it there's some things that made me angry about certain characters but it's all in the drama of the show what makes you know obviously that's what makes you come back that's what makes you come back you wanna you wanna be angry at that player for the next round but one of the things that the challenge does so much better so much better than Survivor is that they're building this franchise that is truly global like you've got the mother show the one that started it all that are like currently building a franchise like listen the Australian one didn't do too well the UK one was a little bit 50 in Argentina absolutely headed out of the park but they're taking this main production team and instead of worrying about let's worry about we're competing against
41 These other franchises like Survivor us is currently worried I think and they're kind of like and that's my opinion I've got no inside information but I mean if you yeah I feel like I feel like it's obvious for people when they're watching right now there's a lot of heat coming Survivor us as way and people are not happy about the franchise they're not happy about how things are going and they don't want an alternative out there for people to get into and love because that could be the end of Jeff's cozy job of all the producers that he has doing all these different roles which ludu spoke about you know how their production team where the US team maybe has four producers they've got one you know so all these people have got a job out there that they're trying to justify and keep when other franchises like Australian South Africa is doing extremely well they're instead of promoting them and helping them up and saying like how can we incorporate this all as one big Global showpiece how can we put all the creative minds together to continue to better the main show to better the sideshows which is what the challenge is doing survivors kind of not looking at that as an option at the moment Richard and what was it like for you seeing a franchise that truly embrace all these different Global franchises that they're like kind of building right now and we already had a world championship where the best of Australia the UK Argentina and the US came together like yo fans didn't even ask for it they didn't need to ask for it because the
01 Challenge was three steps ahead of the fans yeah I mean it's awesome because you can just see from how it keeps on growing you just like imagining how it could get even bigger than that and it actually does get bigger than that you know and you get to see all these players that are in different reality show formats play in this one and you actually get to see more of the social game more the physical skills and so on and so on the strategy and you know it just gives you a much more broader you know idea of what you know the players are like and all of that so it's really an interesting concept and the fact that the US version of Survivor is just sort of like hogging or keeping it close-minded isn't cool hopefully that changes but you know just as high level stubborn one you know when it comes to things like this he even says yeah you can tag me on Twitter and tell me you don't like me I probably won't read it you know it's almost like he's proud of it but you know I think view engagement is such a huge thing and that's what lureau sort of like is capitalizing on and he even has his DMS open to like new ideas on challenges twists and advantages and so on yeah it's like I said in the very quick live I did today to say we're jumping on to do this live and also to give a little bit of a channel update that fans we'd like to believe we're always right when it
21 Comes to our ideas and what we expect for the show to evolve into but in reality we're probably wrong more often than right but you know someone like leroux he'll find that one or two things in the 10 ideas that we're throwing out there and he'll incorporate it which is more than I think any of the other production teams that work on survivors so having someone like that truly cares truly has a passion truly wants the fans to engage to me is so unique it's something that we have to protect personally and then the other thing we have spoken about in the past and one thing I really appreciate about survive South Africa and uru touches on it because he is very much involved in the storytelling of the show and how everybody is going to follow the journey and you know luckily that podcast I don't remember who PG's co-host is they gave little credit for the storytelling in the sense that we get let in on how a vote comes together we're never blindsided in the tribal council but the time that someone like when Steffy was getting blindsided we knew it was coming when Meryl was getting blindsided we saw it coming like we're always in on the plan when chappies was out early on we knew this was coming you know so for me that's quite unique it's something that I used to love about big brother because we could always see the strategy of how a vote comes together and Survivor South Africa does that where a lot of other franchises they kind of Bank especially the U.S franchise they Bank on the shock value to
42 Keep people there and then we don't we as fans who want to dissect the game and want to learn something from it monkey we can't learn that from the US because how do we're still we're still trying to figure out how Ethan got voted out in winners at War right you'll mute it there we go let's take a while for me to unmute but yeah no you're absolutely right but also the same time the shock value is also really good you know unfortunately Lewis never responded to my gym of Rock Island which I've interviewed don't remember me advertising that it's like Ghost Town under island of Secrets but there's a bandage where you pull out a number and that number people has to draw rocks if you decide to a player so one chapter could be four other trouble could be nine and there'll be a gym coming true if anyone can incorporate that twist but he's probably got you on block yeah probably he's like that this guy's crazy Block No but yeah you're absolutely right you know there is a certain element of shock value just like how this a certain element of knowing what's happening right and yeah definitely this was some of the US votes like you understand why
03 Some people being home even with the shock value but I think it's season 42 Chanel I'm still wondering why they've voted her out I was like oh no we've got to run out this person because they're a threat oh well yeah now that's not let's take out Chanel you know it's like what why you know and yeah exactly and so it's yeah like I like shock no they took shock I just like being shocked in general but so everybody likes to shock you at the end because it's a good whodunit most of the citizens that's out there you know but I feel like knowing every step like how things come together seeing the strategy for me personally I like to be a fly on the wall I like to see it I like to try and learn from the interactions of how a vote comes together so for me that they're really doing that extremely well and to potentially lose that to potentially lose a show that has done so much for us in the last couple of Seasons it just seems really devastating but like I said people behind the scenes seem to be very comfortable but it doesn't mean that we the fans need to be comfortable we need to be very uncomfortable we need to be jumping on this petition so make sure that you check out the description on this video make sure that you jump on there and go sign it so that we can let the pastor B know that we
23 Want this thing to get picked up again possibly at this stage I think mnet may be a lost cause so I might even change the slightly the details on the petition to be like any streaming platform a global streaming platform let's get the show on a global streaming platform survivors a massive success and I think it will be an even bigger success if they do get that opportunity I feel like we've just won the war Richard on Survivor UK and it's starting all over again because I don't want to wait five years before you know the next time Survivor South Africa comes back yeah I mean you know I was even making a joke so there was a Twitter page called revive Survivor UK maybe we might need a revive Survivor essays sort of like Twitter account to basically just put like this hopeful information yeah to hopefully Revive Our season but you know like we've said in the podcast like you know we're lucky to have you know something like being rude you know in like sort of like foreseeing everything and you know obviously the players you know the people in the in the nose are hopeful that something is in the pipeline so hopefully that you know actually happens yep I think you listen to their go listen to the podcast with on the let me just once again plug that for you on the reality
43 Escape pod if you listen to their podcast you could clearly tell that I knew something was in the works and that something was going on and he did say on that podcast it's when not if when it comes to the show coming back so let's hope that winner sooner rather than later you know but we will continue to keep you informed of that as well here on the nullify Tech channel so when I hear more information in regards to this like at the moment I can confirm that I don't think it's down to viewership writings I think that's an excuse being used right now yeah for the fact that the channel itself has got its own problems it's let go of a lot of international license shows I think that there's that there is a different reason for that I don't know how many people are still sort of subscribing to DStv and satellite TV and South Africa when things like Netflix out their primes out there all those options are cheaper a lot cheaper to support I think a lot of people if there wasn't rugby on they probably wouldn't even have it like I feel like the majority of people who support DStv support the springboks and if they ever lose if they ever lose that you know then I think they're in some deep trouble over there and I will say that you know knowing what I sort of know a little bit from behind the scenes it sounds like there's some trouble there and putting two and two together in regards to some other International formats being let go as well there
04 Are some really bad sort of theories out there by fans in regards to why the show's being canceled one of them is the view rating another one is because of a previous podcast and allegations that was made by a player which I'm not going to give too much credit for on this podcast all I can say has got nothing to do with that I'm very confident it has nothing to do with any of that stuff so if you're one of the Believers to think this is why Survivor South Africa this has been let go of internet I can tell you it's more about the channel than the show itself the show itself is in a good place it's got a very strong team behind it and like Char dude welcome back Char dude childhood's a bit of a VIP here on the channel especially when it comes to Australian Survivor and now also Traders childhoods become a VIP on Traders as well so hashtag Survivor essay on top agree with that Andrew Lee is saying maybe we need to all chip in and start our own streaming service yeah one camera [Laughter] he's like Chris you didn't want to sit back and you started a petition but I'm going to go out there and physically get out of the wild you know and I'm going to start recording monkey's just mucky's just gonna show up at Chappy's door every morning and start filming Japanese like what's going on there's actually a video out there right
24 Of like some sort of like 100 meter race or something where this guy's full-on sprinting and the camera operator is just sprinting with them with just one yeah I would have to do that for all the challenges like choppies wait let me catch up there again I think there are some things happening in the background in regards to potential new home for survivors of Africa hopefully it happens sooner rather than later in my mind Andrea Lee on Traders NZ week three recap yes they'll be tomorrow night Andre but can I quickly jump onto the whole streaming service thing right yeah I was thinking about it today you know what can I say about you know streaming services and all this sort of stuff because I've got experience with tvnz but I feel like I have a perfect example for this right zoom in thank you for dropping and sorry for interrupting your thoughts there zuderman says on my way to work but I had to come in and support Survivor especially since Survivor South Africa's division it brought me to this Channel and that's why this channel is showing love to survive South Africa it is really where it all started you know for myself The Challenge and Survivor South Africa so zuderman thank you so much go enjoy work all the best have a good day on that side we'll catch you later on in another live as well Mucky you've got the mic sorry about that I just needed to acknowledge you man he's such a great supporter of the channel yeah so I
44 Was thinking about you know what comparisons come back with TV and said you know to internet but I feel like this other example is actually probably perfect for especially in terms of numbers and you know yeah I guess like just numbers and like you gotta getting paid on that sort of stuff and essentially from Winnie the Pooh Blood and Honey which now and I know Chris is going to be like what on Earth but for those that don't know the rights will Winnie the Pooh had expired so some people jumped on made of Friday 13th blood slasher horror film based on Winnie the Pooh and piglet but what happened was that it wasn't played in a lot of theaters especially with like you know Australia and New Zealand and are of course specifically for New Zealand it was on for five nights Monday to Friday at eight to nine pm those are the only time slots and you know I'm not a Karen but I had a very big current moment where I had like a massive argument with the Event Cinemas manager for only having for only having it on you know 9 p.m you know because it's like No One's Gonna go see it right it was only me and I think like three or four other people because I saw it three times in that week right it was only me and three or four other people watching at that time and they said oh you know it's all about the viewership numbers and everything but if you have it on at like a bad time no one's gonna watch it right and I feel like the same with survive South
04 Africa where you have to pay to access the channel to then watch Survivor South Africa well no one's really gonna watch it right because after pay but what they did with Winnie the Pooh is that they made it available for online streaming right so very quickly it's on you know so many of your different movie streaming websites and stuff and they got their numbers through there and I can you know confidently say that their budget for the sequel which is currently filming by the way has gone up significantly so they're 20K to film the first one and for the sequence now 300K I wonder you know it's interesting and yeah I hear you and it's and it's and it's interesting you kind of lost me a little bit I'm gonna be honest because I've heard too much about winning the Pooh review but anyways Andrew Lee has got a very interesting comment he says three TV channel app has channels from other networks like Bravo so there is a possibility for survivors of Africa to jump on other countries Channel apps thinking down that line you know I wonder how difficult it is to actually create an afro Khan's streaming service where the production team themself creates the streaming service and they broadcast it globally to people who would like to support them I don't know how difficult it is I don't know the localities behind it but I do know that Afrikaans not only produces Survivor South Africa they've also got other shows and I think that there are other shows in the future that could sit really well within the Afrikaans team something like the challenge
24 The challenge South Africa doesn't exist yet so it could be another one so I wonder if there is a potential there for an Afrikaans channel to be picked up by other Global streaming platforms or for Afrikaans themselves to become a streaming platform again I don't know the locality I don't know the difficulties behind it but clearly there should be some other options out there as well now we did lose Richard during that Winnie the Pooh segment I don't know why but he did send me a message to say that his laptop had died I know that they have load shedding at the moment in South Africa it's an ongoing problem where power Cuts happen throughout the day so he probably won't be back on but he did say love the stream and wanted me to say to Mucky thanks for jumping on and supporting survivors of Africa as well as everybody here in the live and he's got load shedding on he's in the in the chat they're on his phone but that is really the end here of this live I just wanted to make sure that we firstly showed some love for Survivor South Africa a lot of people who follow this channel reached out to me and said will you support an essay will you do something about it we've now created this petition for people to go and sign it is in the description below we will let you know when more news become available if I find anything out I will be live for another emergency podcast again so in the meantime please consider subscribing to the channel we're very close to 2 000 subscribers where we do get to 2 000 subscribers we'll have a very special live
45 Here on the channel which is gonna drive me crazy because we're gonna attempt to break the record for longer stream on the we'll talk about all the shows that we're covering so we're very close about 50 or so people away from that and we've been sitting on that for a while so it'd be great to be there Andrew Lee thank you so much for the support I really love and appreciate the support you give us here you truly are a VIP of this Channel and everybody that supports Survivor South Africa I really appreciate that but for now grab your torches head back to Camp see you next time bye
