The Amazing Race 34: Episode 5 Review

1:21 For those that don't know Michelle runs various fan pages on Facebook and Michelle will take my head off to you for trying to run so many different fan pages because some of them's got like 20 000 people in them it's crazy like The Amazing Race yeah but they're not all on at the same time if the when they're on at the same time then it's a bit hairy but it's not too bad Michelle I've got some really good news for you before we get into this recap and I actually didn't tell you about this prior to us going live but just in case you don't know because I don't know if you went back to check out the content that we did last week we had two of The Amazing Race people check out our content and reach out to me in the last week can you take a guess who of the current teams have mentioned that they've seen the episodes that we've recapped and have given us a little bit of additional feedback not sharique between yes the twins did so we had Molly reach out and she did let us know that she did take interview when she was doing the roadblock when I said you know I don't know how many of them actually did that which apparently a lot of the teams did and she said she would love to catch up with you and Sydney when they come over so hopefully we can make that happen that's

2:42 Amazing that's super cool and then also we had markers from the military Brothers also reach out to us really yeah and both of them are open to potentially you know let's see what happens maybe we can get some after season content from them as well and Marcus gave us a little bit of insight as well in regards to how far behind the other Team the twins they were when they left that last challenge because we were sort of thinking what was the time difference between because it was not clear and he said it was like about 10 minutes between them when they left there but really cool I love The Amazing Race teams because of this very reason they're very engaging and very friendly and the same thing happened last season as well obviously we made some great friends with Lulu and Lala Dusty also with the likes of the Raquel and also Carla or Kayla yeah so I mean so yeah it's been a great experience in the two seasons that we have covered also wanting to welcome the first two people here on the live stream we've got lovable Mickey sort of a bunch of exclamation marks and then zuderman also saying hello to everyone zuderman welcome back I don't know if you've been in any of our Amazing Race content live before but zuderman is a big fan of the challenge and also of Survivor and has checked out some of our previous content on that so very interested to know what zuderman

4:02 Thinks of The Amazing Race up until up until this point I think I may have been the ones who demand that pushed you to go and watch it I'm recruiting people Michelle oh you know what I'm forever recruiting people and this one guy who was on I think one group and he's just followed now because he's like I keep drinking the Kool-Aid I keep just following and starting a new show and a new show and it's good I recruit there is absolutely no shortage of reality TV on our screens right now and it is going absolutely crazy in Australia as well with just shows one after the other being released but it's exciting time to be talking about reality TV I just wish I could do this full time so I could cover every single show but sadly both of you and I are very busy people in our day today so it makes it very hard to talk about it every single time but I'm happy to be back and talk about the Amazing Race and to talk about an episode that I believe for me was my favorite one this season what did you think of this episode Michelle as a whole I did love the episode I don't I don't think I have a favorite really I mean because I love Venice so not Venice I love Florence so you know that sort of tug that the heart strings that whole thing but going somewhere new is also always great on

5:22 On Amazing Race and I don't know anything with camels is usually fun because I've had issues with camels in the past not that they had to do it much with them but yeah be stubborn and history I love anywhere where there's a lot of history yeah it was absolutely breathtakingly beautiful in a completely different way and what it reminded me of was people always ask me because I've traveled quite a bit and I've been very fortunate and blessed in life to be able to visit a lot of different countries and they always ask me like Chris where have you traveled that really stands out to you and for me there's two places that really stand out one of them being Japan absolutely love Japan because it's so different from anything that we experience in the western side of the world the culture is different and beautiful in a different way but then the one place that I always remember as a place that I love to travel to was Oman in the Middle East which was Desert it was you know again a culture shock but it had its own Beauty the landscape the desert yeah itself where I never used to think that you could find beauty in a desert but again just this specific episode with the backdrop being so different from what we've seen in the last two seasons I think that's what made it for me yeah I mean I love the I mean I went to Dubai so I love the whole desert feel and

6:43 We did some June surfing I suppose they call it I mean we were in cars but God said like we were going to roll so many times you know these are professional drivers and they were you know zooming through the desert and then there was like four cars at once and they're doing this cross you know and the desert's just gorgeous but it's also laced with death and destruction yes but he put on some banging music and it was and I've just I'll forever remember it forever the and every time the music comes on in the car I just remember just screaming and going over sand dunes and so anything with sand makes me remember that good memories it's so strange how you could see a backdrop and it'll just take you back to like an experience you've had or a place you've traveled to and I think that's why I enjoyed this episode so much it was definitely the backdrop it was stunning then also finding out that they've never ever gone to Jordan before now I believe that and I could be wrong I know zuderman's a big Survivor fan as well so he could be correct he could correct me here we nearly had a Survivor season in Jordan but it ended up getting canceled and that was the one all the way back when Boston Rob made his first appearance back in my cases that season originally I believe was destined to be in Jordan but they had to change it

8:03 Correct me if I'm wrong here has there been and zuderman says yes it is that season four way back right but maybe it was because of political issues in the past that we haven't been able to see a lot of people travel to this country and maybe why they didn't do it back then there's no water like this less water than Africa yeah God I mean they said what did they say less than three days of rain in a year 80 covered in sand like crazy I'd imagine doing Survivor there Jeff would be like imagine a sandstorm they must have sandstorms it'd be worse than you know one of those torrential downpours in Fiji or wherever they had it you know yeah zuderman here says 911 caused them to chains which is why The Season's budget was so low and I agree with you logistically would have been a bit of a nightmare like to be out there but this was at a time where Survivor took risks in the locations that they went to think Africa fin Guatemala like some of the rougher terrains that they've been to in the past but beautiful backdrop nonetheless also Zulu men are saying here that he also went back to watch Amazing Race 31 last week and it's amazing so he went back to go watch some of the previous Seasons so it's great get into it so we start off here they get the charter play and they're on the way to Jordan

9:23 For the very first time and when they get there they jump onto this old locomotive and they have this train ride and I was thinking they're like you know as someone that comes from South Africa where people come at you with knives or like any kind of weapons you freak out these people were extremely calm for not expecting it of course like maybe they'd been told this is going to happen because just sorry to interrupt you Michelle but didn't full say like these people have got no idea what's happening next because I'm pretty sure he said that'd be a little bit scared because if you travel around the Seas you can have Pirates exactly so yeah and then like I don't know I'm a foreign country you're in a foreign country in the middle of the desert you know the Amazing Race has never traveled or exactly and these people are just like sitting there relaxing and I'm with my third world country brain sitting there thinking I would have been nervous I would have been so nervous maybe the races can let us know if they do hear this later on if they were as calm as the production made it look or that they have an idea that this thing was going to go down but well they are just going oh this is really [Laughter] yeah just watching the cameraman for a reaction like if the cameraman looks

10:44 Panicked then maybe that means we should be panicked as well but now the camera sorry I didn't think about that is there on the cameraman are there they haven't put down their cameras so yeah they were safe so yeah beautiful start to this they get handed this clue out in the desert almost like a movie that they're in they then get told that they now have to depart in different groups I believe they were 15 minutes between each one of these groups but they had to make their way to the first roadblock which would look like they had to run in the sand to get there how far they ran we don't know I'd love for them to put in the bottom of the screen Michelle in the future they're running 15 miles or 30 kilometers or give us some sort of an indication because along the way one of the twins said no have you called who that was ended up injuring her leg or pulled a muscle in her fire I her thigh she said yeah I don't know which one it was like it's like for me looking at Lulu and Lala like very difficult seriously even I watch I watch them on Instagram or something and I know yes it's very difficult to tell and

12:04 You know the only thing I could think of is that if there was a league not to have some sort of an injury or pull a muscle it would have been this one because I don't know if you've ever done this but if you ever run on Sand like I used to do training on Sand quite a bit for fitness and it is not the same as running on solid awful yeah it takes you so long yeah I had to do it for a race of course it's always a rice and it was on Sand and we had to go down to the end of a pier and yeah it wasn't good these amounts of races that you guys have there in Sydney is out of this world like how many of them have you competed in no I haven't done oh God okay I've done they haven't I haven't done the Sydney one for ages but I've done 10 in Sydney three on the Gold Coast and I've done three in the Blue Mountains which is out just out of Sydney and with my kids they're like kid parent races which are similar they're just really condensed I've done six of those yeah one this weekend with my youngest daughter who's never done one before I've actually got to teach her how to do CPR tomorrow because CPR is one of the tasks she has to do on me and pretend CPR task so yeah so

13:24 I've got to teach her that so what type of races are these are they are they like Amazing Race types of races that I did that was 10 of them it's with a partner and you can either run in the competitive category or the social category competitive are really big Runners they're like they do the big runs so I was always in the social category and they take usually five hours usually they give you five to six hours to do it and I would normally like on a bad race it took me five but normally every race took about three hours for us and you're given a whole sheet of Clues and you have to work out where all the clues are first and then you go so sort of like the first episode that we had they were given three places they had to go to and they had to work out where they were going whereas we had to work out where the places were so we might be given a longitude and a Latitude we might be told this is the place where Captain Philip landed and then he did this so you have to work out the addresses and then you have to work out do you know the best way to do it to get to the end the fastest yeah and you have to do so many so you don't have to do all of them so if there's 20 Clues you have to probably do nine

14:44 Or ten of the tasks and the tasks are like many amazing race cars so you might have to do a belly dancing I've had to do you know an eating challenge we've had to do lots of sports like shooting basketball there's anything you think of on The Amazing Race I have done but in a smaller way that's really awesome it's a it's a really cool thing have anyone and I know we're off topic a little bit here sorry for those that only came for the episode five content we tend to do this sometimes but we will get back into it have anyone actually participated in The Amazing Race Australia that actually participated in one of these mini Amazing Race events have they made it over to the big screen or is this something that you we're yet to see because you sometimes get these fan communities that do Survivor and then people like for instance a dino Polo from South Africa played in Survivor and he was first an org champion before we actually went to go play Bible has anyone made that leap over in one of these not in that respect but when I did the Blue Mountains one two races ago some amazing races were one of the teams so they were in one of the teams and I met them and we actually at the at the Finish Line we actually had a little chat oh thanks Nikki yeah

16:05 Oh thanks Superman yeah so I mean I feel like you know if I get the call tomorrow if Bo Ryan is on the call he's like Chris I want you to get ready to come do the Amazing Race I'm like Michelle's getting the calls she's got the experience she's gonna have to be my partner she'll have to be out there with me the bad thing is that for three of the most recent three races I've come second what is the second thing I'm thinking is this my you know future I'm always going to be second so no second places when we run this thing together Michelle we're going to be like Louie and Michelle and we're going to be like we're no middle of the pack teams we're gonna have to go from the middle from the bottom to the middle from the middle to the top and only go one way so but yeah awesome little bit of background there to you know and I'm not a runner I'm not a runner it's all about brains and knowing where to go and what to do and how to do things quick because I don't run a lot and you know there's 200 teams in the social category and without running a lot I can still get second so you're like Derek and Claire it's about being smarter in between legs instead of doing the running and beating people you know and she's plays definitely not a great Runner either she ended up scraping at me there at the end I felt really bad for her I saw the blood you could just see it at the bottom of the screen

17:26 Yeah Zulu Manson dorsing I said well you and Chris definitely team won hopefully will communicate well so I think you're right like I mean at the end of the day it comes down to how you doing these tasks how you communicate with your partner and specifically how you also can do individually so in the first part of this race obviously we're going to see a roadblock we're gonna see this really cool movie Set type of thing that they've got there and they've got a metal detector that they've got to go around in the sand and look for this piece of metal and then very similar to almost I would much prefer by the way this challenge to the one that they had last season with turning over every little single Rock oh my god get a point below because at least you've got some help with the metal detector but you know this obviously again it does suit the players that get there first because there's more potential options for them to or available metal plates that they can get from it what did you think of this detour who impressed you who are you flabbergasted by in regards to their performance on this well Paul Linton for one thing mind you if you're in the back section of the teams really hard to find anything you know if there's nine plates underneath the sand you want to be there first or second when there are nine plates still there nine or eight plates you don't want to be there when there's only one plate who I was really surprised

18:47 In a oh dear what is he doing way was it David who is going around the edges and stayed around the edges and outside like seriously in poor Aubrey's like I can't say anything to him but he's just doing the stupidest things he had he had some reasoning for why he was doing what he was doing it wasn't sound because he kept doing it for way too long but his reasoning was that he tried to go where there was no footsteps so he did the exact opposite to what Marcus did so Marcus got there when there was absolutely no Footprints or very limited Footprints in the Sand so his strategy was I'm going to really plant my feet to create these Footprints so I know I've been in this area before and I won't go back which was very smart so David because he got there that late there was that many Footprints already in the sand he was trying to do the exact opposite but it ended up failing for him because he just kept going at the outer edges for way too long so I was shocked by that as well and it wasn't just him as well Michelle it was also the likes of Linton was it that also stayed on the outside as well so he was out there as well but again I don't want to just beg on sharing but at certain times she kind of annoyed me a little bit being so hard on the dead here because it's like you know your dad was very supportive of you in the previous game and now you're saying oh you know I would have done so

20:07 Much better at this then why didn't you do it yeah look why didn't she do it I mean she hasn't done enough and you know what I'm not having a total go at her this app she hasn't annoyed me the same as the last step but yeah you could have done it why didn't you put up your hand you know she was very quick she was very quick to be like Dad you do this one again because she had that fright off the previous round didn't want to do it and I felt like her and Aubry were really egging each other on the side like you know oh David's being so bad oh my dad's you know we both would have done it so better and they weren't really being very supportive but hey again easy to sit on the side criticize when you're out there's pressure you want to move up the ranks you know that it is no non-elimination legs you don't want to be the team that is going to get there at the end so that is fair the person who impressed me the most here was probably Derek because that guy had some hustle in him he did fall like IGA he says in the Life Derek fell in the beginning while Claire fell at the end so clearly they're The Klutz team of this not clutch but Klutz seem like they're clutchy and they're full all over the place even though you can say they're kind of clutch as well because they come from behind sometimes when you don't expect it and we'll get into that but you know in the specific challenge this roadblock he does end up taking this pedal

21:27 Detector and running with it like where everybody else was walking and it seemed to be the right strategy because he found it almost instantly by covering more ground yeah because I thought you need to move this thing slowly so you can actually pick up the metal before you run past it very strange very strange hey it's an unorthodox method it'd worked for them they got out of there very quickly but you know one of the things that really surprised me and I was like kind of been buzzled by this was how the lead changed from this roadblock and to the point where they got to the city of Petro they were supposed to go to the City of Petra to the crown jewel of Jordan which was this Temple and who which is now also one of the seven wonders of the world and I can understand why it's absolutely stunning it's just so sad see that there is so much Decay on that building right now and it's like how do we preserve this Michelle because it seems like it's such a great piece of History did you catch how many years ago this thing was built I forgot I'm sure he mentioned it no I didn't I did write down that there's a hundred thousand archaeological sites in Jordan which is just insane absolutely crazy but yes no I know Elise has been putting up a lot of stuff about Jordan this week well she put it up today a lot of stuff for this week's episode

22:48 I think they were really excited to go somewhere different that was so awesome to see them do this and take the risk to go somewhere off the beat and track and I guess it's because they're so secluded that even if it was still covered fears during that time there were times where they could really practice safe distancing from other people because they're out in the desert out in the middle of nowhere I actually wrote down the masks are back they've they had them on in the cars with the drivers yeah and that and that's also being dictated by country right because different countries have got different Mass mandates and what you can and can't do and at that time maybe they were a little bit more structural on having masks also saw tourists around them having masks as well so I feel like it may have been something that the country itself sort of dictated them you know sort of in regards to having to wear those masks it's so bizarre seeing it now because we've been without it for so long in both New Zealand and Australia it's kind of like a blast from the past you almost miss it if you yes if you blink you know but I wanted to say so the thing that was strange for me here is you get the military brothers and the twins they leave this roadblock at first and second they seem to be quite far ahead of everybody else right but then somehow the lead just changes and suddenly Derek and Claire like eager says here they tend to show up first in

24:08 The group and no one knows how like how did they go from sixth place from that roadblock to suddenly being first and beating the military brothers and the twins it didn't make any sense it's slide puzzles slide puzzles just no but this is prior to the slight puzzle right yes so obviously they did they did excellent at the slide puzzle part of it as well and ultimately they're going to finish this league second which is really massive for them coming from I can't remember what place they were in the previous League maybe like seven for eight or something like that but they were towards the bottom of this and they came from behind and absolutely there we go seven but I specifically noticed that at the roadblock they left at sixth place and somehow in between making their way to the city they just made up all that time and you've got to wonder how that happened because they're not driving themselves they had guides that had to drive them there which I'm sure would follow the speed rules and things like that traffic but camels that they have an extra challenge or something was there like an extra thing for them to go do that we just missed like you remember last season they took certain things out of the show yeah Oh you mean to put another okay like another because they only leave things out if the order doesn't change if the order changes they leave it

25:28 In so no you can say no yeah lovable lick it all see it says that was wild I clear and dairy catch the caught up the driver must have been going hella fast exactly I'm just thinking because listen Derek and Claire are clearly too extremely charismatic people right so maybe they smooched their way had a chat with the driver told them listen we'll give you a little something you know give them a little bit of extra cash on the side because you know they get a little bit of a budget I don't know what happened here you know but clearly something happened there for them to get there faster and I'd like to believe it was a production to help them maybe wow people like well the nullified takes it that there was production help for Derek and Claire I will tell everyone no they don't do that I just wanted to say la Mumba where they were doing the metal detecting why was he calling it a UFO crash sign laughs I think I think that's what he in his mind he envisioned it was like a Star Wars themed crash site around yeah but and also want to say lumumba and Glenda like we all know they're my favorite team this season they're still Muffet I like listen I love markers and

26:48 Also Molly for reaching out there now also my favorite teams with them because you know they've already reached out I'm easily bored but I love Glinda and lumumba right and I love the whole dynamic between them and I'm still believing Michelle we're getting the winners edit here I'm telling you because we constantly get a take from Glenda and lumumba talking about how they're coming from behind telling us their perspective of what they're doing like I just see this big edit around them and then the only other two teams that I really see the same level of in and around right now is the military brothers and the twins ironically enough I feel like those are the three top teams right now you it has oh my God can you and please can you tell him he's delusional why you don't think are you I'm insulted I'm getting to the top three I'm insulted on behalf of lumumba I know he wouldn't be insulted by this but I'm insulted that you're underestimating him just like full did this episode I don't think they're getting to the top three so what do you think do you think they're just The Lovable The Lovable thing that everybody is like wanting to root for the underdog team they're breaking my heart here they're a nice team they're so lovely and but I mean I'd like to see more of them that's enough

28:08 Well the thing is you know it's interesting how they go through this race and they talk about you know for them coming from behind making up time which they have remember let's not forget this was a team that was in the top group they were in the top two until they had that horrible mistake in the one leg and suddenly they're in the back of the pack and they're now having to work their way up and the horrible structure Yes you heard me say that the horrible structure of this Amazing Race season where they've got groups leaving together and portions has not allowed them to fully make up that time yet but it's doable and they're starting to creep their way up from the bottom and before you know they're going to be there I'm telling you now Glenda and lumumba you know that Dynamic Dio La mumba's personality it's coming out more and more the deeper they go in here and Glinda you know she's got this really fiery personality that just wants to compete you know it's funny to see them work together and learn each other's strengths and weaknesses like they said they've only been together for like two years so they're kind of learning about each other on this race and they're where a lot of people go onto the Amazing Race and they end up not having a marriage after this they're actually strengthening their marriage on here and it seems like it's really good couples therapy for them to be out there yeah I mean then finding out so much about each other they haven't been together very long so yeah and

29:28 He's so impressed with her how cute is he probably thought she couldn't do anything to start with but he's being very nice he's done a lot of their roadblocks like I feel like he's done the last three roadblocks in a row and the mega link he did two of them he did the roadblock this time as well so at some point glinda's gonna have to do a roadblock again and that's going to be interesting to see how she performs I always like it to be equal and see both players in the team step up and do it but I do think she can and it's interesting that while they're in trouble they've just trusted him to clutch out these roadblocks for them to try and catch up from behind instead of Glenda sort of Having the courage to just step up and do it herself because she does seem like a very confident woman yeah I think she's just scared that's all you don't want to be the one to make you go out of the race so I mean I hope they've got the ruling where they have to do half or nearly half so that then she will have to step up but we don't know what they've got going at the moment yeah we don't we could ask now that you've you know talked to Molly you could ask Molly well indirectly Molly if you're listening to this you can let us know because she's at this point just message on this but I'm sure she will reach out at some point also on this episode we

30:49 We hear that Louis Lewis and Michelle they had this premonition or this dream that they were going to win this leg and that they're not a middle tier team they're a number one team this is really a coming out episode for them and I remember someone in the comments I can't remember the names so apologies for that but someone in the comments after our previous recap said the biggest winners out of Dom and Rich not making it past the previous episode would be lures and Michelle from an edit perspective well who would have known it yeah who would have known that person was right well not just the edit but they also ended up really climbing from the bottom and coming out as a very strong team at this point dare I say well they are they're doing really well I mean like I think she was over ordered actually coming in first because she just broke down crying because what if they come the last few legs not that great like before that so first like 10th yeah 10th in the first League fifth in the second leg first half of the megalik fourth second half of the mega lick fourth and now first so they have moved their way from the bottom to the top and I'm really enjoying this because to

32:09 Be honest with you outside of Marcus and Michael no one has been consistent this season not even the twins like in regards to their placement so it's very interesting because last season we kind of had an idea well these are the top three teams and they just kept dominating throughout the season but this season it does seem to be anybody on any day could come in first yeah because normally I have a big chart and you can see where there's there has been some Seasons where it's literally one team is one two three one two three and it's they just dominate the entire season but we haven't really had that yeah well we've had different teams placed first as well so we've had Derek and Claire in the first League they were first Marcus and Michael in the second league they were first in the first half of the mega league but that doesn't really count so the mega leg ended up being the Twins and then now Louis and Michelle being first so it's been different teams finishing in first place which is really good news next time yeah it has got a very hot take here and since I think Abby and wool got covert because they were so invisible in the episode promo love them and I

33:29 Would explain some things I would feel really sad for them if that is how they go out because they were big fans of the show coming onto the show but it would explain why they've been so quiet today because the little bits that we have seen of Abby and wool it does look like they've got a personality like I said a few episodes ago I'm like maybe they're just like vanilla very Bland personalities but Abby and will both seem like they've got a personality Abby more so especially in this last episode I picked up a little bit on it when we got the edit and we did see that someone potentially would have tested positive for covert in this next week which would be devastating to see someone go out of the game that way well they'd be out they wouldn't bring them back in I don't think because it would well it would take a week and I don't think America will operate like that and that means that it would be a non-elimination lag said there isn't any but there would be if a team's out with covert because they have to because they've got a plan they have to keep a team in then because one team's gone so could they bring back Linton and shariq could they be following the same Trend as Natalia and depends when they depends where they put them is there a sequester I don't think there was a sequester last season for the earliest teams

34:51 Yeah I think they just sent them home but I think it depends on it depends on how quickly they got out of the country got on a plane or however they do it to get out there and how quickly the test results came back I would imagine lovable Nicki really does not want to see sure it come back like no thank you all in capitals for those that are listening to the audio here and I think Zulu man is not really that interested in it as well lovable Nick saying I'm going to be devastated whoever is disqualified due to the runner this is a great cast I do agree there's a lot of lovable people on this season you know I do miss having a villain that I could be like you're the villain but yes there's no villain they're all lovable though you're missing it as well you like your villains no I don't mind I don't mind a villain but I don't think everybody is lovable wow hot take anything UK to elaborate on this Michelle look I don't hate anybody but and I don't hate anybody in this cast but I see some people as a lot more lovable than others that's fair that's a fair call that's a
