1:21 About for so many years in America and we're here episode two week one done and we're here to talk about yeah I mean 38 seasons over of for the main show and MTV in the USA for the challenge we've had some offshoot Seasons happen as well overall I'm pretty sure it's over 45 40 46 seasons in total that they've done but we finally get to see our local iteration of the challenge and what a week it has been there has been some mixed feelings out there already by fans some people getting it some people not getting it Kahuna what was your general thoughts of this season so far looking at the first two episodes that it sort of hit what you expected or were you surprised by anything that sort of came up in the public I guess over in Australia people watching it look I'm not surprised I can see where both sides are coming from personally I loved it for me it was very much the challenge it's exactly the same as what we've been used to but it's within Aussie flavor and I always appreciate when I can have local things that I relate to more that it's you it's representation right representation is always important when you can relate to it more you can invest more I've seen on social media that some people are saying that it's too much like we mentioned this in

2:41 The preview that it might be too much maths too much Bachelor in Paradise and not enough survivors like the competition athletic reality side versus the dating reality side and they might have a have a point but one thing that I realize is that is exactly what the MTV show was for many years that's how it began right like when you it wasn't based off Survivor it was based off the real world it's it was the drama it was all that and why not let them do some athletic competition along the way so if you're coming into this show feeling like I want the athletic competition then you may feel there's too much drama side of it if you will if you're coming out of from the Bachelorette the maths the love Island side and say I want my drama I think you're kind of in a good spot here because you get all that and I don't think anyone's going like you know what too much like athletic competition too much like fun you know challenges similar to that stuff no one says that but they do like having the drama for me it's always been the essence and the flavor of the challenge you get both the drama and the reality competition the athleticism and it combines it makes this beautiful like Survivor slash love Island baby if you will and that's the challenge well let's talk numbers here right because I agree with you Kahuna I'm

4:01 100 I'm 100 with you on this whole thing I personally before we get into the numbers I personally don't necessarily always gravitate towards the sloppiness the dating shows that Vibe it's not my thing it's not what I like about reality TV but I can take it in Doses and I felt like it was quite evident in the first episode that a lot of that drama and messiness was being brought in by the cast like we said the bachelor coming in The Bachelorette Married at First Sight you know you're going to get some of those you know dating shows what's the other one love island or something like that so there's a few different of those love shows with the drama coming in that people maybe don't appreciate I don't necessarily appreciate it but I didn't feel like it was overbearing because they did balance it out with a little bit of strategy it was funny to see Brooke jarwood be the most strategic person out there and people not well the whole time yeah we knew we knew it was funny to see that but let's talk about the numbers first right so we look at an article that sort of came up from the Daily Mail they are very bold and they say that the show's already flopped and the reason that they say it's flopped is because in the Metro viewership numbers for the first episode it had 215 000 views and it went down to about 195 000 views in the second episode overall we when you don't look at the Metro views itself for

5:21 The first episode it was closer to 450 000 so that looks a little bit better and they haven't given us the full country's viewership ratings yet for episode two but it's not looking great when you look at the numbers at this stage what do you think is where they're going wrong here because they've put a lot of marketing into this thing they're even releasing Australian Survivor villains vs Heroes the new cast during the breaks of the challenge to get people to try and watch this but then they don't have enough Survivor players on there to get that crowd to look watch it in the first place look it was always going to be a tough balance I think the tastes of Australian reality audiences is maybe different and well not different as a whole but there's different niches right and we've talked about the dating reality fan versus the competition reality fan aren't necessarily the same and that's a hard balance strike it really is I don't think the challenge originally when it first started was meant to be some mainstream ratings Juggernaut right it was an MTV cable that was a very much built on cult like you know fans and stanhood that kind of built over 20 years to the there it was finally after 19 years and 37 Seasons or something they said hey how about we put this on CBS and we'll try an Australian version and it took

6:41 That long really for the audience to build to the point where they thought they had something viable I do think that it may take a bit of time because it's so different to what we're used to specifically in Australia but once people get that taste through it like I have a theory I don't know if this is like correct or not but pretty much anything that people will watch in a binge-worthy manner no matter the quality they will eventually stick with it I agree the worst television show ever poor scripting bad acting horrible show but you just stick with it for long enough you're in and you'll just keep watching it and there's also a reason I want to add here to this there's also a reason that the show became as big as it did over in MTV because they keep bringing the cast back over and over so we started becoming a part of the Journey of Johnny Bananas the young guy who was a complete Meathead an idiot sort of you know becoming a little bit more mature yeah it's a little bit more mature you know he's a little bit not that much more but a little bit more mature but you know what I mean like CT is probably the best example it was a complete he wanted to get him fights and things like that now he's the dad you know the uncle the friendly Uncle I still can don't get him on this wrong side he can still definitely you know the bear Still Got Claws but at the end of the day we've been a part of their journey and I think as the challenge Australia season two comes around if they do the same thing and they keep the majority of the players half

8:02 Of the cost returns some new players come into it then maybe that will get people behind them like we can see where Karen is starting this season and let's get into it drama you know Karen is going to be a big player this season you can just tell because he's physically fit he's in the numbers with the bachelor crew who became an alliance within the first episode surprise that there's numbers you're going to go wherever you have some familiarity but Karen here cheats on his partner and it is cheating even if you're fooling around right corner straight into the shower first episode oh my goodness I like look at to be honest it's not surprised like he even said in his intro he goes I'm he's known as a root rat which I thought is one of those things that again when I mentioned that there's going to be some Aussies that we'll have to like clarify for American audience and stuff a root rat is such a great word I think I don't know if I survived do you know what it is I don't know what it like listen I could tell it's basically he's like this player he's an F boy yeah so root being you know the Aussie slang term for sex or whatever having a root which Americans like every time we hear Americans go I'm rooting for my team we all have a little bit of a giggle in Australia because that means you're basically begging banging for your team and

9:22 Kieran says that he's a bit known as a river and he's like he lived up to it having to apologize to your partner at home in the confessional well apparently for those that are interested in no there's going to be some people who are watching this who loves the drama and they would want me to follow up and let you guys know Karen ladies sadly are still with his partner he's not on the market she's forgiven him but Aubry is no longer with her partner after this I don't know if it was specifically because of this or if they broke up before that but apparently she is now on the market after this so sadly that relationship did not withstand it and this is one of the things that Australian public was very critical about when they saw it and they said this is not a great example for people out there because Australians is all about you know putting a great image out there to the world especially if this is going to be something that is going to be seen at a world stage I don't think they really enjoyed seeing that there was some comments online that I saw yeah again it goes to what show you're coming to this from now there the only show that is Australian produced reality show that is currently shown overseas because it is so successful is maths because they are absolutely mental they up the drama they hype it up they throw wine that's why sorel's on there all that sort of thing and that's what actually works

10:42 For so the people that are saying that they don't appreciate that image put forward I think it's probably because they're more of the again on either side that's the bachelor's side but yeah Audrey I was watching that going she's on the kitchen bench putting whipped cream just all over okay this is going to be something and then edit that's hard cut and somehow I just want to add this kind of somehow David keeps finding himself in all these situations where he's seeing this happen in front of him David was for me the standout star probably for the new people that I just got to know absolutely love David absolutely loved what he brought to the show and the fact that he was on I'm a celebrity get me out of here and he was the one fake celebrity out of there I'm sure he had the fake the fact that he was a celebrity I think that's brilliant I never watched the show but I can see why he was it was great yeah I could see why he got casted because I think he's got such a great personality and I want to see him like my endorsement is behind him if he does go out early because it does look like he's in the outs he's someone I would like to see back you know I've already put it out there he's 100 guaranteed like I think he'll be on every season if there is a second season based on the ratings but like hopefully there is but he'll be one of the those guys that never really does much doesn't win doesn't but they bring him back every

12:02 Single season because he is great television and he is two episodes in he the first episode he's rocking a hot pink suit with high heels and twerking at the party and stuff it was great yeah he's a brilliant character I love him yeah it was a great funny scene between him and Johnny where Johnny grabbed him ran into the into the into the pool with him as well and Johnny another person like I feel that both you and I can feel justified by our analysis on him because we said he looked quite like he was quite angry in his cast photo and he had his mother chopped off no mustache coming into this one he looked like he was there for business but Johnny is still going to be Johnny right I mean we're still going to see that Survivor Johnny come out another person who I think the producers love because he's getting a lot of editing and there's a lot of commenting and things happening around Johnny I mean Johnny he's got this little thing happening with Jessica getting in the same bed with her so we're seeing Johnny in a very different light compared to the guy that we saw in survive I just like that Ryan apparently stole his mustache and mullet like that's where it went we were like what happened to Ryan took it apparently he's got the station yeah Johnny was great we're gonna talk about episode two but Britney he's partner in episode two said he's just a the underdog larican which everyone loves and I thought that was great his response was I just found out who she was two days ago

14:43 Getting together they're going to stand pretty strong moving forward in this game and they're gonna probably look out for each other it did come into effect when the first daily challenge is something where teamwork is so important they've got to go to the stadium they have to run up a staircase they have to go get these plates that they need to throw down it's kind of like noughts and crosses with only naughts and you have to get four of them lining up to win and obviously we saw this play out in the Challenge USA we now know they're not going to necessarily change the type of challenges the daily challenges we'll see but they may have small amendments or do them in a different order because it happened a lot later in The Challenge USA did you like seeing this challenge come back this early on because I am someone that felt even in that one specifically I don't like the ones where you can gang up on people especially this early on and I felt like certain people were out of it very early on because of that I hated it I hated it look that challenge is I think I know why they chose it because of the stadium it looks so cinematic it looks beautiful it's a massive structure bigger than anything that Survivor could ever hope to do on an island right like this massive football stadium but I think for the first Challenge on the first episode for this show that is I'm assuming pretty important I think it was a poor choice it's a boring challenge that's just completely repetitive it does show the brutal nature of the challenge and

16:03 How physically demanding and grueling it can be it was a hundred percent that but that doesn't always translate to TV that well and it was just running upstairs running downstairs running upstairs running downstairs and 12 teams doing it and then like you said you get the whole thing of she's got bloody bronchitis she shouldn't necessarily be there anyway be running up and down stairs but they went hey there's a weakness let's all jump on it and it took nothing for them all to you know get Jack and Cyril into It'll like make them the ones go straight into elimination but for the choice of challenge there's so many huge spectacle impact maybe physical maybe something that wasn't just like I would have liked you know what I would have liked to have seen I would have liked to see them first challenge get in the mud get the ball get the racism it's a classic people that are complaining on social media I think that we talk about how it's such a delicate balanced drama and the and the competition something like that could have really upped the competition side of it and made the drama not feel so dominant if you will in the episode I think the challenge that they did which was called collect four you said Challenge USA they did it in like episode nine or

17:23 Something so they did it well nearly the end of the season before they did that challenge and again it looked great it's physically demanding there is some strategy involved if you like Brooke again as he said the first one to actually yeah try to block someone with their challenges but I love that I love Brook throwing shade at the bachelor as well or The Bachelorette saying you know what do these people think they're on The Bachelor you know Cutthroat and what they don't realize with Brooke is that yes she does come across as someone that you know won all these immunities and she says I'm known for someone that has won a lot of challenges which I hope is going to bode well for her on the challenge right but she's also someone that's playing her third reality TV show now she's been to the end twice in Survivor pretty much gone almost all the way in both of her Seasons you know she understands strategies she's already thinking in a different way she's used to competitive game shows which is very different to what a lot of these people are walking into I was very fearful for her that she was going to get targeted here in this first episode because immediately people were starting to look at her and Connor as someone that they should potentially Target here and I think it's only because of the relationship here between Emily and Jack that Brooke didn't end up down because I feel like a lot of people

18:43 Were trying to get her and Connor down there well it's evident from the start right as I said she was the first person to actually make any kind of strategic move and do a block it's the first challenge like there's not really many opportunities for people to stand out so far but to be that first person to pull the trigger and actually take a shot at someone else is a big deal and it's going to stand out in people's memories especially when they're all not in that mindset of trying to compete but like you know you know that old reality cliche I'm here for the right reasons I'm not here to make friends I'm here to win that kind of thing and they're still in the I'm here to make friends mode well it's interesting though because you know if we look at the challenge you would say there's a case study to be made here that a lot of the people who came into that show were from competitive reality TV shows where strategy was important so big brother and Survivor was quite dominant we had some Amazing Race which also requires a little bit of that and then the minority was love Island and it had a very different feel to it The Challenge USA compared to what the challenge Australia is feeling so far because the people there were playing a very strategic game a very Cutthroat game from the start and I think that you're always going to get that 50 balance off the old school fans that have watched the challenge that maybe didn't enjoy it as much and felt there was less Joy I feel like with the challenge Australia there

20:03 Has been this Aussie flavor there has been a lot of partying there has been a lot more fun moments and then also drama one thing they did improve Kahuna right from season to season is there was a lot of complaining in The Challenge USA about the house and the living conditions they completely went for a new house that looks a lot better than what the challenge here is they had no there was a lot of drama you didn't hear about it a lot of people hating it because they all had this one it was like they were in a big Warehouse yeah there's one big room where everybody had to sleep in and people hated it like everybody was bagging it afterwards the Big Brother people were fine with it yeah well can you see how such a such a small change right such a small change just having rooms caused so much drama right from the start because Sorel of course Susan I told you I was Audrey yeah they had an argument right from the start just because of where to sleep and Sorel just because it's not respect the shoe the shoe rule apparently everyone knows you can put anything down on a cinema seat no she said that she said the first challenge was the first yeah on there she was like who's no one told me yeah challenge that was a challenge I lost I'm going into elimination I didn't know Cyril's

21:24 Great I told you she's great nah she's awesome she's awesome man I mean obviously that was the one blurb from Sarah but we had two blow up some Cyclone cereal here in this episode the second one being there's some history between her and Grand Grant being friends with her partner and she felt like Grant was dogging her this episode so for those that are in the USA it means that he was doing her dirty by guests going with the rest of the house what options the grand have he had to do it like if he didn't do it he would have stood out I'll tell you what my observation of Grant is confessional outfit that he chose is one of the most outrageous things I've ever seen in CFE do you remember what it was I don't know how anyone doesn't remember what it was it's a bright orange button-up bright orange and he had it entirely down worsen any of the cleavage that the other girls are showing in their confessionals he had all his I was like wow man like do one button at least he just had the deepest V known to man I was like that is on live TV you are insane so from that I was out that's the kind of commentary I bring to the table apparently hey let's look at his chest listen I think what I didn't notice it because I'm used to survival where everybody walks around top listeners normally don't have a shirt on

22:44 So I didn't even notice that it just completely went over my head so you know maybe you should go play Survivor after this he'd fit right in he might just have to get rid of that shirt off his completely though yeah that's right he would challenge who's a King George for his clothing outfits that he used to wear out on the island that's right yeah exactly it was that kind of vibe that was fully that kind of vibe Grant oh my God I love it I love it brings it brings a different vibe to the show as a whole but we see obviously here Cyclone Sorel and who was her partner in this first one that was in dangerous with Jack obviously Jack went twice into the eliminations but just the worst start possibly that he could have had but you know they are the last team you know because everybody basically voted against them or sabotaged them to go in which I didn't like I want the team that has lost to officially be last because they couldn't hack it rather than being voted in or sabotaged to go in even though it's the name of the game things change I'll get over it you know but they end up having to go in but luckily for them Ryan and Emily one Emily's got a really good relationship with Jack so that means that Jack can have a word with her and he wants to go against Billy and Susan I think they targeted Susan as the weakling in that group because I didn't look at Billy as potentially

24:04 A weak opponent to go against but ultimately that's going to work out for them what did you think about Billy and how he handled the whole situation of being potentially Under Pressure here in this episode I mean first of all I just want to take a quick side note and say Chris did a phenomenal job with the exit interviews with both Billy and Susan getting some real insight and I found listen to that after the eggs and now you asked me what it was my insight into the way Billy handled it based on Susan's interview I'm like he didn't handle it well at all like I didn't think so on TV as well but when you get that behind the scenes stuff and she's like then talk about it yeah talk about it what did he say well the fact that he was like going back to the house and he said throw me in I want to go in because I think Billy didn't understand the game he didn't understand he said he watched some of the shows before because I asked him did you watch some of the shows and he said yes but I do think in his mind he forgot that this was a season where you go down there with your Dio so I couldn't understand why he would be because he's blaming Susan for not being fit enough right he thinks he's an actual weak link and then he's still yeah he's willing to go into the elimination with her it makes absolutely no sense so he

25:25 Didn't have a strategy and I think that him at the party scene the club scene trying to threaten was when he realized oh I might have to go in with Susan into the elimination so maybe I should try and threaten Emily or intimidate her and saying that I'm gonna hurt a boy Jack who's friends with her if I do go down there which absolutely blew up in his face do you think we missed a bit of editing where someone explained to Billy that no you go down I think so I think we missed a lot oh I've been a like threatened Jack because I'm gonna do something here because this is not working out so if we missed something we must have we must go from like yeah like we missed a lot and I mean and also I think that maybe they just couldn't obviously one of the things with this episode when you look at the MTV Challenge it's a lot longer the Run time's about an hour of actual content where when you watch The Challenge Australia it's 40 minutes 45 minutes it's a bit of a shorter show it's not edited as long as even Survivor for instance so they do have to leave some things on the cutting floor and I think that they left a couple of things out there that potentially didn't make as much sense to us as an audience especially after hearing Billy talk about it and also Susan and the exit interviews like you said they gave a lot of great insights I'm so gutted that I couldn't do the next exit interviews because both Audrey and also Jacqueline available for them but I will be back next week to do some more

26:45 Exit press sadly I'm at the moment I'm just working with Channel 10 and with the contestants and what they can and can't do I'm sort of you know working around that but I'm hoping to get some more behind the scenes content for us as we progress through this season with the episodes but sadly you know they go down here they have to get into the elimination it's a very familiar one it's the one where they've got to tie knots within this pyramid structure they've got to work together like team communication is vital when you do this type of elimination and Billy and Susan can't talk to each other like Billy doesn't listen to Susan he's got his own mind and you know it was it was just a disaster wedding to happen basically when they got down there we've seen it so many times the one thing that I do like about the challenge when he talked about the potential of Billy going up against Jack is that it's not always physical and he was so confident in that when you get there you're you've got a partner you've got strategy you've got puzzles you've got a rope that you need to work out the best way to do it and we've seen this challenge multiple times in the MTV version it was even in the it was episode one elimination for Challenge USA as well so it seems like they're really using the like even the set for the arena in the arena yeah I think the arena is the current set for Rider dies the zone so I'm more interested I'm more interested how that for people that

28:05 Are listening to this that watched both of them how are you feeling about seeing everything twice because for me it's a little bit I'm less excited because I'm seeing it again I've already seen it's new people taking it on and I'm still here for the long run I'm talking about this season regardless I mean I can spend the next five weeks talking about it because that's how long it's going to be it's actually going to air very quickly mid December it's done so I can go through that but I you feeling a bit of fatigue seeing it and should they have looked at change again but I think personally kind of the reason we're seeing this is because the production team behind the scenes that the USA showed they're still very heavily involved obviously we get our own host we get our own cost but I don't think that the channel 10 production team is fully running this thing I think they're really doing it with the help and also the costs and things would be a lot of us having everything there already so it makes sense well yeah I mean to go a little bit deeper into the source episodes two episode two's elimination even though we're doing episode one I'll just quickly skip forward because it's on topic episode two is elimination was today's Elimination Challenge in the challenge Rider dies all right the one that yeah so the one that actually aired today is the exact same I haven't seen it yet so no spoilers I think they may have filmed at a very similar time yeah like if they were all there

29:25 In Argentina and just sort of you run the MTV show through their elimination all right everyone go back to the house let's get the Aussies in and do their eliminate all right everyone go back to the house you know so there's all the potential for the new audience for the new audience that have not seen any of the Challenge USA they're just getting into this for it's a new show marketing is happening and all of that this is a new show that probably doesn't bother them they're probably not noticing it but it's for those of us that have seen both shows and that are watching it we're probably more so aware of that you know so it's a new show you can give them some passes on some things right because they don't have the budget yet and it's not standing on its own feet and by the looks of it if the numbers don't go up I'm not overly confident we see season two I'm hoping we do I'm hoping this is something that they Channel 10 will go well let's give it another chance but if the next season if a challenge Australia season 2 is not part of a global thing where they can piggyback off some of the already made up Arenas and challenges and things like that do we have the budget behind it to go and do another one I don't know I'm kind of leaning towards maybe not I'm going to take a guess and I don't know I'm not in television production at all but I'm gonna guess this is a pretty cheap show to make like in the grand scheme of things they've got reality stars which are not getting like

30:45 Big appearance fees like they're not giant Stars yet they're trying to get according to according to Billy they're Cloud Chasers yeah right he said that a lot he was on the wrong show bro yeah the cloud says there's no they're all Cloud Chasers man what are you doing but the up and coming they're not paying them these ridiculous stunt casting fees yet yeah they're they filmed it in Argentina where it seems like they're just running the production meal so I and again because it's Paramount plus and Paramount plus is trying to build this ecosystem of USA Australia Argentina UK all that and they're trying to make a thing and because Paramount plus and all the streaming services in the world are trying to just it's a it's an arms race for Content they want to Stack up their service and have lots of service on lots of content on there I'm wondering if it might be worth it to Paramount see whoever to kind of just keep them running because it's pretty cheap we're here anyway we're going to be filming the American version it doesn't take it's running in parallel yeah run it in parallel and then we've got more content more subscribers whether that translates or not but I think that's the thing and I'm hoping that's our way out that we might get a season two just because they're going to run another season of the US anyway we might as well just have more content for and again we

32:05 Said before it builds right it's a show that builds over the years once these characters come back we start weeding out the people that don't make good TV they'll bring back the same ones and try to find new rookies that'll be main cast again and you kind of just keep going so it's going to build over time for sure yeah listen I'm obviously I'm in I'm sold I want to be talking about the challenge Australia season two three four five let's go you know people saying that they thought it didn't compare to the US version that the US version is so much better yeah listen I don't know I don't see it honestly I honestly don't see it I think that and again this is coming from someone who's got a lot of love in his heart for people like Tyson and for you know I'm gonna get hate for this I like Sarah Lucina I love the cops are us you know like I love survivors so there's a lot of Survivor players on there were some big brother players that I knew so it was a lot more serious it was a lot more strategy so I think again it's that portion of people that wanted it to be more like survival big brother that maybe don't like the love Island type of vibe or the bachelor Vibe and the drama the messiness I think it's those people probably that are saying that but in general I thought it was really good and I do think you brought up a really valid point early on it had its own Aussie flavor which I really appreciated yeah I really enjoyed that because you know even
