4:14 I'm like the easiest get guest ever like this is just the first time you've asked me true I feel like we're all very attainable yeah like we don't have anything going on with our life it's a Friday night and I'm here babes the highlight of all of our Lives is that over a year ago we played a game yeah we will still happily talk to people about that game well I mean there's a question I wanted to ask you Sam right because since you're the winner of traders in this group say co-winner as well oh co-winner co-winner sorry my bad co-winner you know as with Traders as a whole what has been your thoughts on Traders as like a franchise in general has been a hit has it been Miss what's your thoughts on feelings on Traders as a whole I think it's one of the greatest games that's ever been invented and I think what surprises me about it is that every version of it we've never seen a version two versions that finish in the same way still to this day there have been what english- speaking nine or 10 versions every each one is finished in a different way apart from Australia season 2 which I don't think finished I think it they stopped after episode five but it's always different we're seeing new gameplay come through now that people have seen other versions of it and

5:34 It just it just continues to grow every new season is great every new cast is great I think it's been absolute stunning International success and will hopefully continue to be one that goes for years and years like Survivor or let's go with International crcket yeah yes absolutely well Annabelle you know we both cover like Survivor we watch a lot of these social strategy shows like you know in depth how do you think traditor Stacks up against a show like survival the amazing Roes I think that you know the early versions of the traitors there was a little bit of skepticism from the hardcore competition reality fans because there's such a strong element of luck particularly when you're a faithful and so people were maybe not super keen on it I think it also you know in the first couple of Seasons people are really kind of working out what the game is and how it should be played I think you know New Zealand season 2 UK season 2 these are really good examples of how fun this game can be when people kind of know what they're doing

6:54 And I mean don't get me wrong season 1 New Zealand was also absolutely fantastic it was one of the rare versions of a season one where people knew what they were doing but I think particularly given just how phenomenal the gaml has been in the second F iteration Skeptics are getting one over I mean my dear darling friend Mark warno in the chat major skeptic had never watched a season to its completion bullied him into covering the first week with me he's watched the whole season and is absolutely loved it like I think you know Big Brother everyone's obsessed with big brother a lot of production interference you can make these criticisms of any game yeah there's a lot of luck here but we are now seeing this deliberate strategy yeah and how about with you Julia you know obviously you played in the first season you covered the second season with me and I think you've said you've watched UK season one and Australia season two is that right I watched well I feel terrible here yes no I watched half of season one of the UK and maybe half an episode of UK season 2 but I watched all of Australia season 1 and all of Australia season two now the reason because it was I was it's your

8:14 Neighbor and it's really interesting we were showing at the same time right so it was really fun for us to be going in between each one and just how wildly different the game was and like You' both said it's just never the same and you think there's production intervention and there just simply isn't it's just people being wild animals playing a game and that's why the format is so great yeah so I assume from you think it's been a massive hit for Trader show huge huge yeah well Sam you know with Traders been such a new franchise there's so many different like things players can do right so I feel like with a game like Survivor that's been around for so long you kind of know every play in the book at this point right with TR has been such a new franchise we had so many like jaw-dropping moments in this season alone like when Mark sacrificed himself like do you think we're set up for more new things I think there are so many other things that happen I thought of something the other day that I thought that' be interesting to play oh yeah that's what it was I thought you could get there you could pretend to be part of the crew and like so you're in with the faithfuls you have to make it so that you're there for a reason so in the round table rather than sitting down you just stand at the

9:34 Back and like maybe hold a drinks tray or something like that and then just hope that and sort of mention it to Paul beforehand and then eventually maybe at episode six be like oh by the way he's playing come bring I thought that would be funny but yeah there were so many different things that Mark just to go back to that for a second Mark sacrificing himself for the game Crazy what a crazy thing to do everyone is so desperate to play this game to stick around people do to Mad things to do that but to be someone who play who's a professional games master to then just do that absolute crazy turn is just phenomenal and I've never got to talk to him I really want to talk to him to because I he's gone straight to being straight for sort of having a maybe a difficult first half of the season to be absolutely iconic that's amazing well speaking of iconic players Annabelle what was your thoughts on the great sacrifice of Mark I was in two minds about it I thought narratively it was stunning I mean you know everything just tied together beautifully Sam and I spoke about this over on silent podcast but you know the way we'd had things seeded we'd had the notebook then we'd had you know the Mark is this selfish

10:54 Self-interested player will only ever do things for himself and then all in this one moment you know the notebook comes back he's doing this seemingly selfless thing so as a as a TV Watcher as someone who really appreciates this as a product I adored it was a very redeeming moment for me as an obsessive Game Fan I sympathize with the other podcasters the less nice ones and Sam who despised it and was like why would you do that's ridiculous you know you're supposed to stick around in the game I just did an interview with another one of the contestants who said that they felt it was a reflection on you know Mark wanting to quit and go home anyway so I sympathize with both points of view I'm not to be a fency feneran but narratively I adored it am I going to be like Sam and think oh yeah he's one of the greatest faithful of all time for doing it nah stick him in the bin well I mean Julie you know brings up a good point there is two sides to that Spectrum right because you know Mark on one hand like narratively this is probably like the best move he could have done because if he continued in the game he's such an obvious like you know recruit do like if you're in

12:14 Mark's position you know would you have continued in the game or do you reck you would have done what he oh yeah I absolutely would have kept going to the to the end absolutely but it REM I mean his move to an extent reminded me of what Joe did was writing his own name down you know that was wild you know he want he wanted out he just like oh look of this you know was crazy it's was just so unexpected and that's why this format is so wonderful because you just don't know what's gonna happen we definitely saw we definitely saw it in our season didn't we J there were times when Anna said she wanted to quit the game there were times when Brook said he wanted to quit the game those are the two I remember but there were yeah there were times when people just felt absolutely and just wanted to go home and not me I always wanted to stick around because I was having a lot of fun even though it was testing and trying but yeah was it the same similar with you in about oh yeah no we had people who were desperate to quit and were being talked into staying by the powers that be and I was there actively encouraging them to quit I'm like yeah some of us actually want to be here get your bags go home won't miss you goodbye how can I make this experience worse for you so you will

13:37 Leave well and about just before this podcast I was listening to your Deep dive on Ahab you know with pu and peridium with the people who are wanting to quit were they like more on your side or on Sam's side Sam and I were on the same side which I think people forget Sam and I were on the same team it was the people who did not like me because they had no idea what they were doing there had never watched an episode of the show before no concept of what they were signing up for at all basically got there were like oh my God I did not realize that this is what I was going to be doing get me out I'm either bored or exhausted isn't it crazy that people do this like there are so many people so desperate to play this game and then the people they cast are I suppose you want that mix don't you want people who are hardcore fans who will be able to reference other plays that other people have made in other games and then you want people who haven't watched a single episode of the show like Joe because then those people butt heads and it's really interesting and yeah but they are taking the place from a player who would sore off a league to be on the show yeah well I mean Annabelle I'm a very interesting debate I'm not sure if you saw it that Chris kah and I had was the big was a big debate

14:57 Between the current formation of American Survivor against Australian Survivor where I'm very much against the new era of Survivor because there's too many super fans I feel like everyone's like the same sort of robot almost trying to play the exact same game and stuff whereas with strange Survivor since you've got a great big Mick some fans some casuals you get players like Kirby you haven't really seen much of the show but then just perform the most amazing gameplay of all time like do you think the Traders should try to go more of like the fan route or keep trying to have a bunch of average shows I think this season of the traitors New Zealand did a really good job with that because you did have a mixture of people who you know were big fans you've got Jane who's come from the UK where she's watched you know everything under the sun you've got Whitney who's super hardcore into it and then you know you've got Mike who applied for the show when he was Googling how to watch it so and you know that Joe who hadn't only just got cast at the last minute so I think you know you having a mixture of personalities is really important you're totally right maky I mean what a hot mess is the US where it's a bunch of dweebs I mean hot dweebs but we don't when you get all of us together like we're boring and we all play the same way we want that diversity in casting

16:17 I just for me it's cast people who want to be there like you don't need to have been a fan in order to want to do this but make sure they're aware of what they're signing up for and they're prepared to play cuz like I just I don't want to watch some celebrity that you brought in because they were a big hit on another completely different style of show and now they're like I got my appearance fee e me out of here can I just bring it back quickly to the fact that just going back quickly to way Mark I think is an amazing player because he quit the game and sort of didn't get paid for another day on the Shir he which again it's a crazy move because just financially must be feeling pretty great with himself anyway we can go back to what we were doing just that's just what I was thinking about him well I mean you know I feel like if you're if you're Mark right it's like you know if you want to quit the game you quit the game at the most like dramatic moment possible right to the point where if you go home and you rethink about it like oh I wish I could play again you've got that Cliffhanger story to bring you back right yeah I guess the other thing as well that he found out who the traitor was and he knew he was right so in a way he kind of had done the he had done the purpose of the game yeah also I don't know how much they're paying big name celebrities

17:37 Like you Sam but for us plebs you're losing money by being there sure yeah well I mean we got paid Millions a we're so rich look at I mean there was there was another Sam though likeing that up I was just out like how much did he how much did he get 10K 10 yeah which by the way that was the smartest move in h opinion for season one of TR New Zealand was you know showing up and gapping up for 10K less than an hour of being in the game like I was so surprised that Matt Heath didn't go for that I was thought Matt Heath what you know he's a was a busy man he didn't particularly want to be there but then he could have just gone and got the money and got paid that much and I presume he would have got paid for other days as well but he yeah just maybe he only said that though now I think about that's what he said when he was about to when while he was fighting to stay in the game when it turned out he was a traitor yeah well Sam I do have a question for you did you see the recent news about Traders America

18:58 I' I've seen the lineup I've seen everything what something specific about it yes so they've been renewed for another two seasons of the show so we're getting season three and a season 4 there something that the American traders does really well is that they cast reality TV stars right people who've played a lot of these games before so they know how to bring the drama do you think that is a better way of casting for the game like Traders or do you think similar to New Zealand we do have more Your Average Joe's for me personally I find it quite for me personally I find it quite stressful to watch the american traitors it's very dramatic people play a style of game that isn't quite well suited to me Annabelle and I have talked about this before and I think I'm the person I'm most excited about seeing is actually Zach Efron's brother I think that's such a weird person to have on the show so very into that very into Britney Spears's ex husband as well that the whole idea that those people cast is so funny to me that I can't watch and I'm going to watch every single minute of it and I'll absolutely love the whole thing but I find just you know when they find out they take their maskos and someone will yell I think you're a Trader I'm gonna vote for you tonight and it's just the complete opposite way of how I played the game and how I think the game should be played in a in a smart

20:18 Way but man pretty great TV yeah honestly Annabelle America does have some pretty weird casting like what was it Lassa Pippen or something and how Marcus were together but wasn't she like his babysit or something like that as well yeah it was a bit icky and then there was like the whole fedra and the drama her of her Ro and the locked in the basement situation look I think we know that and I mean it might be good for bringing in people to watch it for the first time but we know that their idea for casting crap because look at the gameplay and look at how it is excuse my language compared to all the other versions like season two was virtually unwatchable in Parts because it was so bad and so boring and yeah you've got some Housewives screaming at each other and like but that only goes so far do you know what I mean like I'm not opposed to mixing in celebrities as well but I think a good Casting Company can find completely unhinged normies and put them in that situation too and I'm happy to strike the balance my concern maky for Australia and New Zealand is just our funding like Australia's already been discontinued even though New Zealand's had amazing ratings and it's you know top in the franchise

21:38 Globally for Quality we all know that you know there's not a lot of money going around in New Zealand for the Arts at the moment like this could be not good thing for Traders austral Asia oh absolutely and Julia you know while you know New Zealand has produced like two great seasons in your when it comes to like creating a cast do you think if you know Season 3 comes around that we should try go a celebrity route again go with more normies I love the unhinged of the open casting I think it was way better I and I and I think oh I look I we love our cast from our season it was great it was really great I just don't think that we brought the drama because obviously people knew each other in the game even though we didn't you know so we were probably a little bit more restrained and respectful I think that we were quite strategic when we went in for voting so I think that's why we did quite well with nailing Traders all the time because we were quite thoughtful yeah but I think the open casting where you really don't know anybody and you've got an opportunity to put in

22:58 An Eclectic group of people that are going to cause drama and it's going to be you know there's going to be the tension there and of course like look at the missions Sam this particular season they were so designed to make personal attacks you know like the worst one was that funeral one was poor they so Savage and mean you know great to bring out you know personal attacks and you know the big flare up so I think that definitely brings more drama and more interest for a viewer certainly yeah so well Sam a very interesting point that you know Julie sort of put up where in the first season you're kind of you guys playing a bit more reserved and stuff like that do you think it's because with sort of semi celebrities or reality TV stars since you guys have kind of got a bit of a legacy to your name would you say that fects how you play the shows knowing it's going to be on TV yeah I think so maybe for some people I genuinely think I'm genuinely shocked that I was on a celebrity version of the show like I'm a nobody like it's crazy there are some people in season two of New Zealand

24:19 Who are way more famous than me yeah Ben Porter is on television all the time I watched him on brokenwood Mysteries the week he was on the show he's been on Short Street he's done way more stuff than me he's amazing as well by the way I love that dude yeah and I think I definitely think there were people trying to withh hold their brands but I think we had that in this season too and so yeah I think the thing that Dylan always brings Dylan reev always brings up is that even though we might know each other we've never played a social strategy game with each other ever it's so different the only person I properly knew in the show was Jazzy and Lauren and Mike and Brook quite a few people about but yeah still there was the there was that kind of thing of like oh you know I still want to I still want to impress the celebrities because they're celebrities I still want to be nice to the people who aren't celeberties because they're nice people and they're cool people I want to get to know them I want this opportunity to sort of make friends as an adult which is so hard to do yeah it was it was yeah it's cool was that what the question was I can't remember kind of kind of but I actually play it off

25:39 To Annabelle because we've even seen through Survivor with rning player Seasons like one of the biggest names comes to mind is Henry with the Trans five All Stars where he had such a big Legacy coming into it and that was literally his downfall you know he's like oh I'm here to play Big play hard and he just drove himself to the ground basically think a legacy could affect how like how you could play a game like Traders I think what I would do is I would roll Legacy as one of the elements as Sam says into the larger problem which is brand so you know when you're going in there you're very con you know people are concerned with maintaining their brand Legacy is one of the things that impacts that and I would say it's you know influencers are going to have that issue but even you know normies are going to have that issue right like I was interviewing Jane the other day and she's like look I wanted to be really nice that's how I am on the outside like I don't my worst nightmare would be to go in there and come off as horrible I mean I know I can come off as a complete cowb back I was trying really hard not to be mean about the other players but like I think part of the secret of casting is casting people who are so unhinged

26:59 And with so little self-control that they can't help being awful anyway so it's like you know and if people are going to be invested in Brands find a the right mixture of brands that are going to create drama I know that on Charlotte Hobson who was the one of the producers of the New Zealand season see she was looking for a mix of some people who were sort of thinkers people who would just sort of do things because they're cool and another there's another part of it that I can't remember and because I she classed me as a thinker and I so I didn't listen to the rest but the yeah finding that balance of those is that what they're trying to do and when we when we cast Taskmaster I'm not involved with the task with casting it but they try to find the same thing people that fit into different slots that will give you variation but also people will clash with certain things people get along with certain things and it's that big we web of casting that it's always so interesting yeah well Julia let's Branch away from casting a Weber you know we've had two seasons of UK two of America Two of Australia two of New Zealand with two twos across the board baby is there a perfect strategy to win in your

28:21 Opinion I don't know if there is I really don't know I mean we talked aled about this the whole way through this latest New Zealand season right and from what we can see those that do hang on aren't as noticeable you know they are the ones that aren't too loud they say a little bit they're very average I think the art to getting to the end is be average as average as you can be can't be a leader can't be too quiet so I think you just have to be so 50% to get through to the end and then I think so much of it is luck and strategy as well you know to towards the end I don't know what would you what do you guys think average 50 percenters I feel it's really 5050 because like with Annabelle in your season you had Sam who was quite literally at the Forefront of everything just drive way to the end who lost who lost I'd like to I look Sam's gonna agree with Julia I'm gonna take a strong opposing view

29:42 But for a different reason I agree that we've seen like wall flowers get to the end you know playing nice and under the radar playing a perfect Sam game that's how you get to the end and I'm not like that's a completely legitimate re way to win but I think if that becomes the tried and tested way to win that's the end of this franchise we're seeing that over in American Survivor at the moment where as you're casting all these super fans and they're all going big targets big targets you end up with all of these winners who didn't get a lot of screen time or when they did get screen time it wasn't super compelling the most satisfying Seasons we have are when the unhinged crazies win against all of the odds so I think like I'm not interested anymore in what's the best way to win Traders at consistently but okay what are the best ways like and the most exciting faithful ways to win and I've got some strong opinions on that well one of the most exciting faithfuls I've ever seen is Sarah from your season you know we've got Sarah you know we've got like Robbie we've got like Mark you know Bri as well like I loved Bri in this season and so oh speaking

33:42 About me the same thing and that didn't add up that was weird so we had to we had to cut him and luckily other people were on my side but yeah I think I think trying to get under the wing of a traitor you've got to do it by luck like Julia said that's how you stick around and for me the strategy that I think seems to keep working like I did is be an idiot don't know what's going on Joe got here through the season by doing that yeah I did surely you can have thoughts and have feelings about it but you need to be you need to be a bit clueless and a bit that which again we've seen a few times and I'm quite excited to see Annabelle's new strategy I think that would be amazing to see as well maybe a big group of idiots who are also loud yeah well Sam you know you mentioned a strategy could be to just stand up with the production crew so then people don't really notice you do you think another strategy could be if you just keep writing your name down and trying to WR your own name down yeah like try to do like a py party strategy like oh I don't want to be here write your name down but then be like actually it worked for Kate in season one of the US it worked with Joe so yeah maybe that's a great stratergy guys I thought this was I thought this was big brother
