Survivor 45 Finale Review

0:04 [Music] [Music] a [Music] welcome back to the nullify Tech Channel on YouTube where we've got the TNT tags for you on Survivor 45 finale weekend that is right I am your host Chris and with me today is two of my co-hosts Jake and coach Drew Jake how you doing I'm doing great sad that this season is over but excited to talk about it yeah it's been an absolutely phenomenal season I mean to the point where we've got Survivor alumni themselves admitting that this is probably been the best season of the new age coach Drew how are you feeling now that we've seen another season come and go you know Season 45 how's it sitting with you how do you feel about the end of the season and the season as a whole I loved it I L the season I think the last

1:24 Time I was on here I mentioned how one of the things you can tell that this is a good season is there were two people that quit and we really don't care and like it doesn't I don't feel like it's a dark cloud over the season as opposed to the two quits from like Nicaragua you know we were able to get past that and had a very fun endgame and a very fun finale and obviously a great winner so I'm excited to talk about all of it yeah 100% I've got Chris here laughing at me because I'm in a car I just didn't want to have Dan be the only one in a car today for the podcast so I thought I would join her you know but now she's not here so I kind of feel like Danica if you're listening to this later on I'm disappointed that you're not in your car listening to the podcast because I especially got in a car to podcast so I could feel like we're in unison you know but hopefully you do jump in at a later stage let's say hello to everybody we've got Fury tiger in the house say looking forward to Australia Survivor next also saying yeah what an awesome season we've got Erin also in the live kiwi SC in the house and then also Gabe saying great season overall Dolores welcome back all the way from Melbourne Florida saying hey everyone can I just say I'm still dancing with joy because Dolores obviously your fellow Cuban

2:44 Won the show so you would have been very proud of that obviously happening on the show I know that D has been your girl since day one here on the channel Georgette welcome back as well G Kagan had a quit doesn't make it any less bad either and then Ki skirt saying I'm sure before Dan is in a cast I'm with too exactly obviously I'm over in New Zealand currently visiting some family and friends over here so I'm doing it because you know we committed to the season I just didn't realized that Survivor was going to run all the way until Christmas so due to that I'm in a car doing this podcast but we're here we're making it happen and I'm excited to be here Dolores saying yeah baby day one what a strong ending for D and I was a little worry towards the end that maybe she wasn't going to get the respect she deserved but luckily that's not the case this season before we get into it Jake and Drew and I'll start with you Jake you know were you worried for D going into this final did you still feel like Austin maybe could find a way at the end there actually the opposite I felt going in like oh de's got this in the bag I mean I felt like she pretty much had everything that Austin could say but more you know she took the info that he gave her

4:05 Told Julie didn't and then lied about it they believed her and then Austin did the same to her and he didn't or she could have done the same to Austin but didn't it's just like she was everything Austin was but just more so I was like there's no way that you know unless she just has a bad Tri tribal counsil and it was getting a little dice see there for a second Austin was I don't know if it was D was weaker in final tribel or Austin was just strong I think maybe a combination of both but ultimately I think D was able to show the jury like no this I played this game the strongest and they gave it t her so I got worried towards the end going into it I felt like she had it in the bag yeah I agree with you I felt worried for a little bit but there's a few things she did subtly in that final Tribal Council that I thought was very effective in the way that she pitched Her Moves because there were times where they were asking like Emily was specifically asking what move did you have on your own what did you own and she didn't talk about the whole move with Julie at that point she waited until Austin actually came in and said I did XY Z and she said well actually I was a couple of steps ahead of you ahead of you here with this so drew that is a skill in itself to be able to say I've go moves in my back but I'm not going to give it

5:25 Until Austin makes his pitch so I can one up him in front of the jury with the move that I had ahead of him which I was very impressed with d and has the era of you know females going to the end losing to men just because of the fact that men are strong players in general in Survivor and maybe females don't get that respect Lina spoke about it a couple of seasons ago has that era gone now like are we a little bit more enlightened as a Survivor Community as a player base that we will see less and less of that or was D just that strong that you just couldn't deny her at the end here I feel like it's both but I also feel like even if you remove de from the situation you had juliean coutura as being clocked as these big if they get to the end threat so it's not even just a d thing even though that yeah she was amazing she killed it from beginning to end all of that but if you remove D and D goes home where Julie does and somehow we end up with Julie or Couture at the end I think there's a strong case for either one of them to win and it is because people have you know people aren't looking at these people as I like to reference Dawn from caramon or Monica colpepper two people that I actually felt like played pretty good games that got zero respect in their seasons and I feel like we've kind of moved past that of like oh yeah they're more than just a mom

6:45 Like yeah you can label this person mom because they're the oldest whatever but it's bigger than that it's we're hearing these people say hey Julie's not only like the mom threat Julie's also a social threat and kind of a strategic threat coutur has a great story has is a social threat and you know finally got rid of Bruce so I feel like it's both I know that's kind of a copout answer but it's true yeah and it's and it's exciting to see Survivor evolve in this way because I was fearful when Austin started like you know pitching his case to the jury you could see everybody loves Austin cuz who wouldn't love Austin he's just a social nice guy he's kind of like the modern era Fabio but a lot more capable than Fabio I would say strategically physically you know like he's like an improved version but he's got that easygo sort of personality and people just kind of gravitate towards it how much of a shock was it to you Jake when we found out that Austin nearly didn't even get on to the season like he was an alternate that only found out 72 hours before the game started that he was going to play the season and if you were to go on the show Jake is that the way you would want to go in would you like to have a heads up to know that you're going to play this season or would you like to know last minute hey you're making it onto the show

8:05 You're not just the alternate this season oh that's a tough question but to answer your first one I was shocked I mean that just rarely happens like that I can't imagine what happened to the cast member that he replaced you know I hope everything is okay with that person that you know wasn't like some dire situ that they needed to leave but you know very lucky for Austin and I think he said in the after show that he felt like it actually benefited him because he didn't he sort of went in with low expectations and he wasn't like stressing for so long you know they stressed the other cast members stressed for like a week and a half he only had to stress for three days you know much less but also at the same time it does give you less time to mentally prepare for it you know like just you know knowing that you're going to be on television versus not knowing that you're going to be on television are two very different things and I think I think just more time is probably better just I understand that like in these scenarios more time is just more time that you're you know your brain is eating at itself

9:25 Like oh what am I going to do what if what if everything doesn't work out the way it's supposed to you know it's just stressing but I think more time would probably be better I like the fact that he took this on and he said I'm playing with house money I wasn't supposed to be on this season I'm going to go for all the advantages I'm going to you know it kind of explains it when he found the beware Advantage cuz to find a beware Advantage is probably my worst fear in Survivor if I was ever to go and play because you kind of know that you need to take the leap but you also know that it's going to come with consequences so it'll have you second guess your decision to actually grab theare Advantage at that time in the game but understanding the back story understanding that he nearly didn't make it onto the show and then get got on there to play the game coach I feel like this probably gave him an opportunity to play the game maybe in a way that he didn't Envision himself playing the game which was to take the bull by horns to play a very sort of aggressive game he did have all the advantages did have all of the ammunition in the game and I think it was a reflection of the fact that he got onto the game so late would you yeah so as a coach there have been times where we have gone into games where you can kind of look at another team like their history or what they've done that se this is what this is we could either

10:46 You know go in and kind of lie down we could go in and kind of play like we normally play or we could just say screw it if we're all like if we're destined to lose this game even if you know even if we might as well just throw everything at the wall and just see what happens and I feel like that's what we got with him this season it's just like hey I'm just gonna go in I'm Gonna Do My Thing best case scenario I make it to the end but that's probably not going to happen because I was an alternate why would I why am I even here and then all of a sudden as the game progresses you become more ballsy because it's like okay yeah every big decision I have to make it doesn't really matter because I'm not even supposed to be here right now and then get to the end and you put on and he I will say that he did have a great performance sitting there at the end I feel that was just all of it just finally coming out to saying you know what I've played like this all game I'm gonna let you guys know this it just sucks that you know he was sitting against someone that as both of y'all have mentioned earlier was just do doing it better at every single time at every single point if he was sitting next to a jake and I don't know I guess thatd be hard pressed to find anyone except for Jake that he could have beaten

12:07 If I start working my way back I would have said coutura but apparently not I'm shocked about that but so yeah I hats off to Austin for doing you know just playing balls to the wall just doing what he had to do and just realizing I might not ever get this opportunity again I shouldn't have it now might as well just go yeah 100% agree with everything you said there everybody Welcome Kahuna is in the house the Big K he made it to the podcast kuna just before we start just to let you know I'm good with the comments it's actually really easy to handle on the phone comp to what we thought was gonna that's okay we'll take whatever we can get from you I know you're here because you want to know how the draft ended having both and Austin as the winner the winner and the runner up for the season so I was very surprised but I didn't see kuna pop in early on Jake cuz I was like kuna's gonna want to be here because man did he have a good season we spoke about it last week Jake we said he had number one pick for the season Austin number two pick for the season D and number three pick for the season Katura like you could not have picked a better Wow first three off the rip and got three of the final four

13:27 The final four but who had the other this guy yeah no 100% Jake you're you know just like just like the Jake on Survivor you never gave up and you never let it discourage you were always positive and upbeat about the draft so it's very fitting that you had Jake as your soul hope going into the final three but Guna how you doing how was the final for you did you enjoy the finale yeah I'm doing good I mean I've had the final is much better than my morning so far cuz look there's my camera gone again I don't know what's going on you can see what we lost you there for a second this is even a different angle this is a second camera that I pulled a second come back am I still back SOA if you're yeah you're back now if your camera gives you issues just keep it off okay no one needs to see my face anyway it's better that way we've got Drew here we've replaced your face with Drew's face we've upgraded final was fun man final was great I mean I think I was somewhat biased because I knew so much was writing on this one episode as far as our draft goes so I was watching it like really excited like even after the first one first episode or the first tribal when Julie went I was like yes Chris got all these people out now let's go let's do this episode right now

14:47 Let's record it and I like oh there's more to come okay and I like hold myself and realize it's a full finale that we're going to discuss but it was fun man it was a really good episode I think D was an absolute deserved winner maybe one of the more dominant sort of winners especially in the new era like she really sort of won that game and was never in danger except for one very interesting piece of luck from coutura in the final episode but beyond that D played a really strong game and really dominated the whole way through I've heard people say there's shades of like Kim spadin in the in the way that she was kind of I see it on top from the from the GetGo you know you know what I mean yeah and like listen let's have that conversation because I was looking at the final and I was thinking to myself where do d rank we love to rank winners and a lot of people thought yam was the best winner of the new era after last season a lot of people were sort of saying that I still don't know like a lot of these new era winners they're all kind of they're almost all similar to me like if I look at like an Erica a maranne I look at yam it's hard to differentiate between them where they are I mean gab had a very experience in game to the rest of them so L it's easier to say he's maybe behind or ahead of some of them but when you look at D's game like is

16:07 D the most dominant female winner that we've had I feel like since Sarah Lina Drew as someone that has watched Survivor from the beginning to end more than once that is probably going to do it on this channel hint nud wink for people on this channel you drew may do another Survivor Marathon watch session here on the channel but Drew as someone that's watched the show quite a lot where do you see her is she the most dominant winner since Lina would you say that is fair I mean we've had what three female winners since there but yeah I mean but yes the easy answer is yes I feel like the Kim bradin comparisons I feel like they're warranted I would say that the biggest difference is Kim is playing against a bunch of jabronis and Troy xan and Sabrina well you know D did have a lot more competition but I feel like you know the fact that both women had people that clocked them and were continuously trying to say Hey what if we what if we got rid of D or what if we got rid of Kim and people were just like oh no I don't I don't know about all that and they'll switch it I feel like for me D is probably where we at 45 D is probably top 15 for me

17:27 Right now I mean it's fresh but I would say the top 15 is not the craziest thing I don't feel like I'm going to blow anything up by saying yeah top 15 but I would say as far as female winners are concerned top five because she had she had she had it from beginning to end once Emily left and even during the episode that Emily left it's like well D's winning unless she doesn't get to the end and it wasn't until the third Austin vote got read that I'm thinking oh maybe I just read this entirely wrong maybe she doesn't win and I'm crazy but when that last vote came in and said D I'm like okay good it makes sense everything is right with the world so yeah D absolutely best women's winner since Sarah fine but also all time just she's definitely up there and I feel like a lot of the winners that we've had since 34 we can't really put there so you know I'm happy to have watched this season live yeah listen to this yeah no I totally agree with you listen to this I just I just I just saw this fact on Reddit and it's crazy to me so we're at season 45 we've already had more female winners in the 40s than

18:47 We did in the 30s there were two win female winners in the 30s was Mich new format does that mean the new format helps female play players well I don't know because at this point we've had five seasons three of them three of the winners have been female two of them have been men seems fairly 5050 to me you know so I would say it clearly there was something going on in the 30s because that's you know there was some funny business going on there I don't know maybe the basically for a lot of women it's hard I don't know it's hard to get into the merge but when you get into the merge you're in a fast Lan to the Wi but no I think it's I think listen I'm kind of over this whole new format a little bit like I'd love to see us go back to two tribes in the next season I know it's not going to happen I know we're going to have the same format play out with the exact same fake merge and all those kind of things i' like for there to be some creativity back on the show a little bit but even with all of those things happening they headit it out of the park with the cast this season and the cast really carried the show and it made it a good season regardless so we were all a little bit I think more tolerant with some of the things in the past that we've not liked as much and at some point you've just got to say screw it I'm in for the ride I'm going to go with whatever this shows doing it's now

20:07 26 days I'm in on 26 days it's now three tribes forever I'm in on the three tribes just give us a good cast you know and sometimes I think we can be critical especially myself and Kahuna because Kahuna and I watch a lot more than just Survivor and we compare it to like the challenge We compare it to other shows that we also watch internationally and it feels like it falls short sometimes times but this season I can't complain about it I can't complain about the outcome I can't complain about D winning this season I think she was very dominant very strong and deserving winner and it was great to see that for once she like you know you normally look at Survivor and you feel like nature tells you that a female player will have her emotions control her game a little bit more than the male player in this case it didn't happen Austin's emotions got in the way Austin had to let her know about the fact that her allies and trouble and D did the exact opposite and I'm surprised coach Drew that we haven't had a big Fallout as of yet when it comes to this because I do feel like sometimes people judge female players differently when they play a Cutthroat strategic game and it seems like d is quite universally loved out there I haven't seen any hate I don't know I haven't been on social all that often but sometimes in the past you see players sort of get cop a little bit of hate from fans because they D to play a strategic

21:28 Game rather than the emotional game when they're a female player so I'm really happy that she seems to be loved and supported out there in the community at least yeah and one of the big things that she said which is something that I've been preaching since the beginning when Emily asked her oh yeah the difference with your brain and with your heart it's like oh it's connected I feel like you should never play overly strategic you should never be going out there trying to make all types of crazy moves because the game's going to play out how it's going to play out the best thing that you can do is to socialize with people having said that she was still strategizing but like one of you all said before she just kind of waited until Austin brought up something so she can harp on it and say well actually it went like this I didn't want to I didn't want to be the one that said it but since you brought it up no I it's frustrating because I am such a big advocate of the social game and you know to see winners like this that can do a good of Social and strategic I always enjoy and I hope and every time every season's always like okay hopefully people don't come in I don't want to hear about resumés I don't want to hear about big moves or anything like that I want to see these people connect with each other because at the end of the day we're hearing about coutur Julie and d and

22:48 Their relationships we're not hearing about these big moves that they were doing we're hearing about the relationships and why they have to go in my head that means these people are afraid of what you know not what they've done in the game who they voted out it's who they bonded with and who they might get that vote from so I'm glad that we're starting to move out of this big moves resume era and into the you know almost like old school survivor of if you're liked better you're probably going to win if people don't like you're probably going to lose and they're only rare situations where you know the not liked person actually wins I usually don't like those people anyway so it doesn't matter yeah I think we're at a really good I think we're at a really good hybrid time in Survivor because we saw at final tribal people really liked Jake like Jake was actually like he may not have been people may not have thought of him as a good Ally and he certainly didn't play a anywhere near as strong of a game as Austin or D but they still were like dude you know like you're my bro like Caleb was just like dude you're my bro you know even people where he had some Drew who he had some tiffs with even coutura who he had a tiff

24:08 With you know they were they gave him his props you know they're like you're a really good dude and you never gave up so it's not like we're at a point where like they only that's the only criteria they look at but they look at both pretty strongly whereas before I totally agree we were sort of veering into like they don't even care about that aspect anymore it's just like who had a better resume blueprint sort of Survivor game and I'm glad we're kind of out of that now yeah it annoyed me how even going into the final and it shouldn't annoy me because we've watched Survivor for a long time now and it's been a part of Survivor for a long time how everybody wanted to make fire I want to make fire I need to get the fire on my resume if I do the fire then maybe I've got a chance here you know like Jake wanting to do the fire Austin wanting to do the fire D wanting to prevent Austin from doing the fire so doesn't have another thing on his resume I'm so tired thinking and talking about the fire and then you go to Tribal Council and Jeff is shocked that everybody wants to do fire no Jeff this is what people want to do now because they see making fire as a way of winning the game Kahuna what's your thoughts about the fire and having had all these different people trying to get into the fir making spot and Jeff being so shocked about the fact that people wanted to go in there to prove themselves yeah I'm not necessarily a fan of the making

25:28 Challenge and I haven't been in the past because I saw it originally as production wanting to give an extra chance and an extra chance and an extra chance to get that person who is always coming in third when they went to final two we're going to go to three people now we're going to final three the person we want to win goes out at Fourth we're going to do firemaking challenge like they just keep adding these extra options so that we end up with a final Tribal Council that we want and that's just production and again sticking their finger on the on the on the scale and now people have figured it out like how they run the same games or the same puzzles or the same things over and over again people will game the system and now we've had enough data to see that the it's worked multiple times where people throw themselves into the fir making challenge it's respected as some sort of move and then they get a little bit of credit or a little bit of you know currency to go into tribal counsil with so they want to make that move because that's what's worked and that's I need something especially someone like Jake who's had the Charlie Brown edit the whole way through hasn't be able to pull off a single move even throws away advantages in the FI finale that could have actually helped him he has to do something literally anything and the desperation straw that he's grasping at is fire and it worked for him but

26:48 Like I think in context of the whole thing did it work for him he didn't get a vote well that's what I mean I think in context they're like we get what you're doing but we see the rest of the picture as well like when it worked the first sort of time I forget who it was but they were they W they get side CHR Underwood Chris Underwood and even last season Heidi threw herself into firemaking Challenge and it had a lot more impact because she didn't need to it wasn't that like she wanted the move and she knew that was the meta to get into the thing so that you've got that on your resume but she also won the challenge to decide who to fir making Challenge and she even threw herself there so for Jake to do it didn't really move the needle when you know you didn't it wasn't like giving up some big sacrifice you had to do this to have anything whatsoever so I don't think it was respected in that way and then now maybe it's going to go the other way around like now that we've seen that people throw themselves in intentionally the respect for that move becomes less and less as it as it be becomes more used right becomes the impact becomes lessened each time it's throwing out there so maybe it flips the other way but I don't know but as long as that's always there as an option for someone who's desperate for someone who needs a move they

29:28 Making challenge hopefully becoming less and less of a Resume Builder in the future I think is what all of us want because we don't want this strategic social game to be decided based on the fact that someone made fire at the end and then that's going to be the thing that's going to either make someone win or lose in the end right Jake I saw you having a bit of a reaction yeah I just think back to Survivor 43 with gabler I mean gor didn't even win the challenge and put himself into it he was just chosen because Cassidy believed he was the strongest person to take out Jesse which ultimately ended up being true and she was that was put against her that was like a strike against her it wasn't even I that I haded the strike yeah I know it's like it's like hey I still think G deserve to win I but I think that they look for an excuse I think they look for an excuse that season not to vote for Cassidy and that was just one of the things that they could Point towards but that should never be the thing where they were making her feel bad about the fact that she didn't do it that shouldn't be the case like she earned the safety you should never be asking a contestant why didn't you put yourself in danger in more danger than you than you needed to that should never be a question that comes out of your mouth like you know and she made she made the right play you know because in that situation it was

30:48 Either going to be she was going up against gaer or she was going up against Jesse so of those two which is the bigger threat clearly Jesse was so yeah you know I think that the fir making specifically the whole thing that Chris Underwood did which don't get me wrong that was badass that move that Chris made in edge of Extinction but it's sort ofo broken people's brains a bit when it comes to yeah what they need to do and what they don't need to do so yeah talking about you know breaking people's brains and things like that cuno what did you think about Jake breaking the final challenge when it didn't go his way in the immunity challenge I loved it so much it's so Jake wasn't it like that was just the perfect and he's like cuz I see my five-year-old do that exact same stomp when you like when you're in trouble and they're pissed off and he's just like and even when dad's saying stop it cut it out Jake no more he's like and kicks kept going he didn't he didn't adjust he didn't change he didn't like you're right Jeff I'm being silly I'm sorry he just kept getting his angry walk through the and yeah it came tumbling down which I thought was hilarious because I don't know if anyone's ever broken

32:09 The Challenge before just by being in a temper tantum being annoyed it'll be a top 50 moment I'll say one thing I have heard from players that when they're in these challenges they are not listening to what Jeff is saying they have phased him out they don't they don't they're not comprehending what's coming out of his mouth so I understand why he was like maybe didn't hear Jeff say stop or else you're out but at the same time it was clear that his emotions were getting the better of him and that just that just shouldn't happen so that's all I'll say about that I like how it's literally fallen on the ground and cannot be used anymore and when Jeff's like you're out he's oh come on yeah he couldn't even have kept going if he wanted you know if Jeff wanted him to because it was keep going there keep going it's fine he would have won that was the first time in a very long time that I saw a bit of sassy Jeff come back out cuz Jeff's become so you know enlightened and you know he's almost like this Guru like you know peace love and Tranquility to everyone but drew the cracks was showing that Jeff still lives somewhere inside of him deep down in there it's still the Jeff propes we know and love yeah big Jeff came back for that one moment

33:29 And I felt bad for Jake not because of destroying the set it was because the way Jeff was talking to him it felt like Jeff was talking down to him and this was a very Jake Centric episode so up to that point we had spent a lot of time with Jake and I was empathizing with the guy knowing full well he's not going to win by the time this episode ends but listening to Jeff talk to him during that moment it's like oh man I really feel for this guy like literally nothing can go his way you know we've got you know he wins the challeng to beginning the episode it's like all right cool like let's see what happens here and then we get to we get to the immunity we get to the reward Challenge and all and it's just not reward challenge both immunities either way yeah you just you felt so bad for him and it was just like salt in the wound of like oh man dick Jeff's back and he's talking down to this we just spent an entire season empathizing with and then you know to make it even worse he's apologizing to Jeff on his way out like sorry Jeff and he's like dude it's all right it's all right man like he comes back to the guru Jeff it's all right dude like my God it's all right and you know Jake just puts his head down he they walk off and it's over but yeah a weird Jeff moment Jeff even brought it up in tribal again just to like
