0:01 And we are back with day 38 of Survivor 46 and 46 Chris Underwood just won Survivor edge of Extinction I'm sure we'll talk all about how people feel about that one as this go as we go through this next hourish today we are joined by Joelle and Ari from the LRG community and muy from the nullified take Traders New Zealand review depending on who's listening to this and at what time will be either tomorrow at 4:00 A.M or 800m his time or whatever it is it's coming within the next and just going straight into Ed Extinction we'll start Mony you said this is your favorite season your favorite American season so we'll start with you what is it about edge of Extinction that puts it at the top of your American survivor list well I mean to a fair 2019 overall was probably my favorite year of being alive right was my last year high school my parents got married and whatnot you I had a lot of great memories with my boys and this was the first season in Survivor history because I was a late Comer to Survivor as you already know Drew where I had the hype of waiting to see Kelly winworth

1:21 Joe or Bren David come back to play I never had that feeling before so I was just like oh I'll just check on Heroes versus Villains next yeah I can see those plays back but I have to wait and I'm not a patient person Andrew I had to I had to wait for this F to come back and play and I really enjoyed it I love the edge of Extinction as a Twist as a whole I love Rick div's story across the season and I love that Chris won yeah I would agree with most if not all U we'll talk about that all right when this season first aired and your first time watching the season did you have any precon Notions about what the edge of Extinction itself was going to be or did you just kind of just get it all out of your head and let's just see what they actually do with this theme no hold on it's let's see what they do with the scene right with the with the season I'm just here to enjoy I'm just here to be entertained have a good time you know Mony said that 2019 was the best year of his life today for me right now Best Day Ever I get to rewatch edge of Extinction and you know that's I think that's the beauty of the season right when you watch it week to week I don't think it translates the way it does when you just watch it all in a row there's a very easily digestible season

2:41 You can flow it all the way through it really works I feel with the binge with the Netflix era the end of each episode transitions into the next one and you know whoever gets eliminated you get to watch them on the next day and I guess it kind of wears off on the week to week but when you watch it straight through it's just one long story so it just flows a little bit better and Joel especially playing in an edge of Extinction type season when you played Survivor New York and seeing you know I guess you would have played that after the season came out what did you think of the twist you know as a whole just like hey you're going to get stay in but you're going to have to eat like [ __ ] for 39 days or 21 days of you know at the merge did you think that the twist was ion I won't say fair but I guess just what did you think of the twist I thought the twist worked I mean Survivor is no stranger to having like a Redemption type thing you see it in Pearl islands with the outcast twist you see Redemption Island and South Pacific have like the battle backs even blood versus water so this is a new take on it and I think it works because it's almost like a another tribe being formed

4:02 Right and as people are getting voted out you know they're going through like their like you know regrets and stuff like that but they're also interacting with other people who they screwed over literally three days ago and I think like what I like most about this season is that the winner actually was on the edge sometimes these Seasons they have a Twist and the winner doesn't Embrace The Twist right like Redemption Island Rob wins he's never in a Redemption island of the idols Tommy never goes and meets Sandra and Rob so I really like the fact that like Chris kind of Embraces the Twist and yeah we'll get into some other thoughts but I think that's it's amazing and this has always been my defense of the twist of season and they bring it up I think [ __ ] brings it up during tribal a final tribal The Twist isn't it on trial y'all are like whatever people want to say about the twist mainly negatively doesn't matter because in the moment all these people care about is the game they just played and in the game they just played they felt like Chris did the best and there were a lot I keep forgetting that like the jury breakdown

5:22 Is not what you would expect the jury breakdown I think has one comma member that votes for Gavin oh no yeah there's one common member that votes for Gavin and that's Aurora and then everybody else you know the other three votes that come from that go to him do not come from k and it's interesting to hear Chris talk about hey I had to do these I still have to play the social game out there he didn't have to really do the physical aspect as much as he needed to and the Strategic aspect you know I'm going to get to us a very important part of the strategy when he was out there but the social aspect I feel like really work to his benefit in this game and on once again the one thing that I always try to say about this season is if even though I don't like him if Azie win South Pacific people don't [ __ ] about it if T wins blood versus water people probably don't [ __ ] about it if Burton wins Pearl Islands people probably don't [ __ ] about it and all of a sudden you know we get Chris if Rick devans wins this season people probably don't [ __ ] about it and I understand that you know Chris only played what 11 days of the game maybe 12 but if you're gonna if you're gonna hold this thing of who he got

6:42 Voted out then you can't say that you were rooting for Rick devons this season because he got voted out one round after Chris did and the only reason Chris probably didn't win that first battle back is because Keith gave him a disadvantage on the battle back so Mak going back to you why do you think there's this Dark Cloud over just the Chris wom in general why do you think that people hate him and love him that much that they you know and by what's the word because they're the two are related together also [ __ ] on the season so what do you think about what do you think is about Chris that makes people like have so much loath for him I mean I'm not too sure because when you think back to when he came back in the final six he did every small thing perfectly to reach the end right he got someone else to play an idol for him right and got Victoria out he then you know had his own Idol that round then he not only won immunity but gave that up to take out the biggest threat in the game someone who everyone's been trying to take out for majority of the merge phase of the game right he did everything right to earn the win I don't know what else he could have done to earn the win but I think it's also because American Survivor fans I know a lot of them don't watch Australian

8:03 Survivor I'm I grew up Australian Survivor that's kind of my gig right so I'm used to see people get voted out and come back the next episode I don't mind it that much but I know a lot of fans do I feel like I feel like Chris's win I always relate Chris's win to the doctor strange and the Avengers right there's only one way you're win in this game and your ass got to get voted out round three you know what I'm saying so that's how I feel about it and you know what I feel like you're asking me about the twist right and I don't want to get off that I feel like the edge of Extinction is the main character this season right it like it's not Chris it's not actually Chris yeah it's the it's right that's the name of the season right and ream being the first one there I think one thing we really wanna we never want to forget is us as viewers we knew this was happening right we read the Press maybe on episode one you find out but if you're someone like ree or Rick you don't know when this is ending there's no end game they gave him nothing that first night for Ream is just all Darkness I think she may have had like a like a torch like it's you know level one of Zelda you know what I'm saying like she had nothing and you know they talk about in this in the beginning Jeff probes like this is about pushing yourself we knew there would be people coming back but these folks had no

9:23 They had no food no water I don't know about water right but like they had no idea when this was going to stop so in terms of Chris's win I feel like everyone on that jury projected themselves and said oh that's what I would have done oh if I'm back in the game oh that's exactly what I would have done so he did exactly what he had to do to earn to earn those votes and you could kind of see the folks the people that vote for Gavin it's like more the people that Chris kind of screwed at the end right Rick and Lauren that's oh he kind of does true Lauren but like wwor votes for Gavin and Aurora votes for Gavin I think it's because Aurora and Chris never they never crossed paths yeah they never crossed paths and because I think the battle back is the episode that the episod ra orora gets voted out so they have one night together and Wentworth probably goes with Lauren in that situation so yeah and then Devin you know I don't believe in bitterness and I don't think that what his what he did was actually better I do feel like he probably liked Gavin better but the Optics aren't great D what I want to what I want to ask you is this season is [ __ ] on in the community

10:44 Like people do not like this season and for me the first time I watched it I was just like okay yeah it's mid but as I've watched it over the last few times that I've done this it's like no this is actually just a good season I understand it's very similar to like 43 where people get pissy about the win but like the season L up to like watching Jesse in 43 was a lot of fun and this season watching Rick devans in this season and a lot of people that are very underrated and we're going to talk about them and the season are a lot of fun so should the fact that the winner whether you like him or not is who he is a F how people see the season as a whole absolutely not like I think that we weren't there right so there was probably stuff that happened that we don't know about that Chris did that may have deserved him to win but I think that like the beauty of Survivor is watching all the different converging stories not just the winner right we get four R returnes who are like great all in their own right this becomes the first season that it's like a attorney player that doesn't make it to the end yeah and that it's the first one

12:04 Right which is nuts because usually in the other Seasons all of the new players are like oh like follow like I'll follow you and what do I do how do I make fire and they won they're like we got to get them out you know and it just shows the evolution of the game and the evolution of the players you know thinking like hey we can't let them get anywhere near the merge because they'll Run the game and I think also with what's so fascinating is with like the Manu tribe is Iconic like no Duds anywhere you know I feel like there's not really that many 10 person tribes that you're like oh I know all of them you know you feel like you know all these characters in the beginning K's kind of boring but you know with them yeah they were winning and then just to see the lesu five all just fighting with each other at the merge and going back and forth between different Power struggles I think it's amazing I don't think you can just put this season aside based on the winner because there's been plenty of other Good Seasons with you know average winners average and what I'll say about that is I feel like this season people always want they want big moves or the

13:24 Casual fan or whatever the [ __ ] they want big moves they want the game to be fluid this game this season has both the game play is very fluid at the merge and there are a lot of big moves at the merge this is what you won I understand that the winner is not the one pulling off most of those moves but who gives a [ __ ] because you still get at the meat of the season right here is big moves and fluidity within the game and I do feel like you know the they play once they realize what the twist was you could see you know who's going to come back and how we're going to navigate this and the fact that Chris is able to come back and survive a vote without any type of advantages or any type of you know not immunity I think is a testament to the game yes he played 12 days but at the end of the day you played with what you were G and if you were given 12 days if you've gotten voted out and you come back and you have to play three or four more days and you play the you play the perfect game in that situation I get it so Mony now we're g we're going to talk about this final three because I do feel like at least two of them like I Julie's fine but really

14:44 It is Chris versus Gavin here and I do think that Gavin is a great finalist he's very monotone but I think every point that he makes is valid and I there was a couple points where I'm like wow I'm surprised he didn't get more votes because he was making a lot of very strong points what were your thoughts on Gavin mcky I quite likeed Gavin I thought you know at the time is see the him Rick divans that was going to win like especially the first time I watched the season like oh so obvious if Rick divans gets taken out it's gonna be Gavin if Gavin guns if he gets taken out it's G be Rick divans right so I was very shocked to see when they actually went to final TR Council especially how anti- Gavin a lot of the Jews right it was like I felt like a lot of times when he would say something like oh come on Gavin it's the nature of the Season Gavin come on it was it was like Peter Griffin every time Meg comes up with an idea like oh shut up Meg yeah espe doing that to him yeah exactly and so yeah I was quite shocked to see that Gavin didn't get more votes this season no I'm tell something about Gavin right it seems like he did such a great job and he booted a lot of people but let me tell you when Chris comes back he loses all his juice if you I mean you just rewatched this

16:04 Right he takes a back seat who's leading the game at that point is Chris he's talking he's making moves with Victoria and Lauren talking about here's the idol Rick you get to hold Mine He's still connected with Julie really leaning into that sympathy he play he's playing with Victoria talking her up calling her a threat and Gavin seizes to direct the game after that's it he takes a back seat he did a really good job up until round 11 his last big move was against Ron with the double play or whatever but and he gets Aurora but you know everybody got Aurora Once Chris comes back into the game he is nothing but and excuse my language he's nothing but a passenger whoa no you take that back take that back that is so offensive oh my God Joel do you think there was anything that Gavin could have done at the end there you know or just brought up the final like once Chris gets back do you think there's anything that Gavin could have done outside of sitting at the end with Julie and Lauren in which case I still think he probably still loses to Lauren maybe do you think there's anything he could have done from final six one the real final six one to potentially put himself in the best spot to win or was

17:24 This his best spot to win and he just lost I think I think pretty hard because oftentimes at the end in Survivor people like to root for the underdog and with Manu going to tribal so many times they've got a story out of that and that's what like these players really resonate with I think that Gavin's issues that like he didn't really have a story to go along with his moves he just had moves and yeah I think I think Victoria kind of like comes in and takes a lot of credit for like the stuff that they worked on together which definitely hurts him so maybe like having her not on the jury so he can argue against her on the same side and not at the jury would have been better but I think I think regardless he's in a tou spot yeah because yeah I think Lauren wins I think Rick wins and I think it's a tossup between him and Victoria yes I think this is the this is the perfect spot for Gavin to be in like there is no other final three that would help him better than in this spot and like Gabe said in the in the in the comments about you know him boohoo The Twist wi's at War even like they there are a lot of people out there and I know I'm going to talk about that in a couple days but like there are a lot of people out there that don't like the Twist and they

18:44 Still basically laid the blueprint for how Natalie could win that game so like even though they don't like the Twist and they do understand that we probably don't want someone that's been voted out to win the game here's what you need to do to win it so do that and CHR does that you know I understand that you know it is it's group think basically but if group think's gonna win me a million dollars you bet your ass I'm gonna do it and I think that what he did to get to that point giving the necklace away which I talked about a couple of days ago during the HHH finale where oh maybe it ghost Island they talk oh yeah was Ghost Island because they talk about hey Dom did you ever think about just potentially giving a necklace weight it's like wow I didn't realize they big they started big braining that two seasons beforehand uhuh and CH just kind of says yeah let's do this because in that spot Chris either loses at fire and Nick devans wins he anyway either way right he gives it to like if Julia or Gavin go and they lose to Rick he loses the only way that he can make sure that he's putting himself in the best spot is by giving the necklace

20:04 Away and taking it to Rick because either I'm gonna lose here which means I was probably GNA lose anyway or I'm gonna win here and I have a better chance against these two than I do against this guy who every one of the jury has said it's him and Victoria and we're gonna talk about Victoria but it's him and Victoria we got to get rid of them and if I get rid of them then we're good hold on with Gavin really quick right like in front of the jury he's like cowering like ah I don't want to go to fire no I'm good I don't want to go to fire it's very weak right if you're sitting there and's saying I don't want to go to fire that's pretty lame so oh my bad I thought he was I thought he was cleaning with CHR that he didn't no he was saying he wants to go to he wants to like Say Hey I want all right well my bad either way well here's what matters this is one thing I want to point out with Chris he did something really brilliant he claimed that he was going to be helping these people make fire but in reality he was getting his licks in he's like let me show you how to do this and he's the one actually practicing so he goes to Julian does it and then he goes to Gavin and does it under the false pretense of helping to go against Rick or whatever but in reality he's training himself yeah I don't know I when I you know it takes a while to catch up and pick up on little things well that's one thing he did that deserves a lot of credit right because he

21:25 He could have told nobody about what he was going to do but instead he takes advantage he takes that time he starts practicing twice as opposed to Rick who's just practicing with just one set of FL so underrated Chris underrated yeah and you can't deny that he did have a social game out on the edge I think Survivor does have a problem of editing what a social game looks at like you look at m Michelle fitgerald yeah from season 32 right like people are like oh auy was robbed which like no there no Michelle more right so I think that's another layer where he's just like on the edge connecting with these people learning about their families that is that is something that like goes further than strategy and big moves you know so you're vote Mony go to you talk about the cast as a whole because I know people have brought it up so far tonight the cast as a whole I feel like is there's very few misses with it I feel like everyone has very distinct characteristics I would say that what's it was Ron's other guy the other guy with Ron oh Chris's clone Eric yes because I kept forgetting

24:05 That I'm like I actually care and while I was watching this the big thing that kept popping in my mind and I think this is kind of this does bring down the season is I feel like it's a mix of every season every newbie season that comes before it in the 30s and what I mean by that is I'm not the biggest fan of the 30s Seasons because I think that's when we start getting the big moves in resume era which I hate and also ghost Island happens where they under edit everyone and only edit two and this season there's a lot of big moves and then they get taken out there's a whole bunch of people talking about their resumés and they do stupid [ __ ] or they do a big move and then get taken out there are very there are a lot of people this season that are under edited but are looked at as threats Julia and Victoria two of them where we get a we get during the Aubrey vote we get a lot of content from them but outside of that we really don't but it's looked at as they the two of them and Gavin are tight three and they're running the show and the fact that they are so under edited because we have to give Rick Devin screen time which fine like we'll talk about him and we have to give our attorne screen time fine I like Kelly Wentworth and I like David

26:45 I would have been more interested in seeing them I guess more early days really but was the same time I really enjoyed the 100 confessionals that rck div's got as well you know I think it's great so yeah as I was watching this it was just like all right when they when they start casting for 50 and they probably already have us locked in there are a lot of people that we've gotten 33 through 49 by the time Rick devons is the lock like there are a lot of people that are like okay yeah they'll probably like Q I feel like Q is probably gonna be there I want like Rick devans is the lock for 50 and he's probably the lock to get voted out first unless something crazy happens all right who are some of the connect who are some of the characters that you connected with this season whether it was the first time or the most recent time that you felt like okay yeah I can I feel like I can relate to this person or I really I'm really interested to see where this person's Story Goes you know what like talking about the cast right like forgetting like the Strategic side I feel like one person is very it's a lot of interesting people right like I find re interesting whatever but Wendy right I feel like when you watch it more you kind of gloss over like for some for some people this may be the first time they're introduced to someone with tourettes and I don't know it's just like it's cool to see someone like that on TV right like I've met people with Tourette

28:05 And to for them to I don't know be vulnerable and play the game and not let that kind of Define them but answer questions I know it's pretty interesting right but Wendy is a terrible Survivor player not good not good at all she hey she survives longer than Aubrey who is the Rob goddess of K for Aubrey that point Aubrey said you guys are incredible right I think that speaks to the caliber of this cast and I don't think I don't think she was trying to like kiss ass right based off of her game changers appearance but she was playing with people like Sandra and Tony she was she's in that mix and for her to say that think it's a lot of credit strategically War doog what a Savage that dude knows how to control the vote take advantage that Julia boat even just like it's Rick and War talk all about that vote in general because crazy yeah and then finally Aurora she's what an under edited interesting person I think she's if I'm not mistaken she is a lawyer of like child services or something right when she grew up as like in the system come on man what a beautiful story right here's someone that grew up in a system and then

29:26 Is now serving and protecting those within it I don't know it's just what an interesting person and Victoria's a badass you know Rick is funny of course and Lauren as well very athletic and there's just a lot of just there aren't many Duds on here you know what I'm saying even the ones that aren't strategic are still very interesting people and J I want go to you with for the Duds at least in your head are there people that stand out as like oh man like I could we won't bring out outside the game stuff Joe but are there any people in this cast just like okay yeah I forgot like when I said with Eric who is that I don't know who that is where you just kind of look at the cast like oh yeah I forgot that person was here or does like is it top to bottom for you I think Eric is probably the only one where I'm just like wait when did that happen but like everyone else like either does something memorable or has something memorable happen to them like you mentioned Julia before yeah we don't see her in the edit but her like completely spilling the beans at tribal and causing this like live tribal to happen and shut dog Julie's like I'm ready to jump ship like it's just like a masterpiece and it all happened because of Julia

30:46 And then she gets voted out it's just it's amazing like yeah she didn't get a lot of screen time but you remember her for that right like has moments Aurora she was under edited but the time where Lauren passes out and she's deal with the Victoria while somebody's on the ground and the Medics are running like it's pretty gangster forget that you know I gotta say that's pretty badass yeah even Eric like with he because he was talking about the family visit we gotta make it to family visit we got make family visit and it leads to his vot out so I think I think this cast is just like you know and Kei on the edge and I forgot about this until today where they get that they get the Lil weasel weasy Keith and then Chris like shoves him out the way and gets or whatever I think that ultimately makes him put that disadvantage on Chris for that first battle back like there's an ring being the you know the first boot of the game and having a lot of content in that first episode and having a lot of content throughout the season to the point where there were some people that thought she might actually get back into the game my favorite player if I want I want to touch on Mony with this you know we're

32:06 We're slowly heading into the new era I'm two days away from the from the new era I feel no I like the new er it's fine but I saw this chain starting to happen around 35 where you know these casts have one or two people that you really connect with and that's about it 35 is that way 36 that way 37 is everyone you connect almost everyone that you connect with 38 I would put in the David versus Goliath category of there are more people than you connect with than you forget and then 39 to 46 I think it goes back to oh yeah there's a couple people that I do you feel like that helps or hurts a season in your eyes well as question it's quite interesting that you ask this because I could a massive critique with Australian Survivor said they only to give the edit to like six people and they take up the entire screen time right like it's all good to build up characters for moments and stuff like a strali 5 doesn't way like oh here is a big player so when the blind sign happens it feels out of this world it is insanely EP can over the top right which adds a I guess a cinematic epicness to it but American surv especially in the new era

33:27 It's not really the getting that treatment just that like you know want actually have done something right because I feel like with the big moves era especially why make a big move where you can just ride to the end make a big move like final six or final five and then you'll probably win just off that right so that's what I think the issue with American Survivor especially with the editing is that just strategically more smarter to just be a loyal more of a social player and then do all the strategy much more closer towards the end yeah you build the bonds early so that when you start pull moves late people can say oh I like them and they got me I respect that and I do feel and I know I keep going back to Mill vs Gen X this week with a lot of Seasons I talk about and I think that once again the season the reason that brings it down a little bit for me is the fact that everyone has in their heads that they have to make all these crazy moves and they have to be out in the open about it and every single time those people get taken out and in this season it's kind of the same thing where Gavin and Victoria are doing a lot and they're doing it under the radar and when big moves get pulled out or when Julia has her moment during the vote that she gets voted out it's because she's the one that's out in the open she's the one that is

34:47 Now the figurehead and now she goes when [ __ ] pulls that move on Kelly Wentworth [ __ ] goes home next he goes home next because everyone sees okay this is and that's why I think that there's a f there's a I won't say it's a fallacy with the game but there's a fallacy with how people think about the game where they feel like they have to make these big moves and they have to be outward with it so that the jury sees us it's like yeah unless you're Natalie Anderson playing with a bunch of jamokes that final set of Bel sir you're probably not g to be able to just showbo your way to the end except for if you're Rick devans who is basically show voting his way to the end of the game and I think that's why the jury is saying hey Chris if you want to win or whoever goes back in the game if you want to win you got to get rid of them get rid of him Rick devans I feel like was a was the I know AR said that as Extinction was the main character of the season I feel like it's a toss up between that and Rick devans Mony I know that Rick devans is a very polarizing figure in the community I know I didn't like him the first time I watched this season and I've loved him every other time I've watched do you are you are you more Pro or anti- Rick and has it always been that way I've always

36:07 Been Pro Rick because I think something that a lot of people forget about is that he won like four immunities or something like that yeah people say oh he's just like Ben Dre Bergen but he only had to rely on Idols to get to the end didn't he misplay like two idols and something and like even at the final five he plays as Idol for Gavin as a social move so it's not like he really had to rely on Idols to keep playing them to keep himself in the game he was using them in other way strategically like to make more of a connection or an alliance with others and also he won through immunities as well so I feel like that argument was very shortsighted on oh he had to r on Idols to win yeah just like Ben dreber he was going out there Hing to get the idols but I think he only really needed it like once twice Dawn to get him but like he's doing what Ben couldn't do of getting people to kind of be with him on certain vot Ben was going to go home if he wasn't doing Chris oh not Chris oh my gosh Devin I feel like had people on his side in situations where he could have gone so I agree with you Ari moncky brought this up the comparison between him and Ben and I do feel like that is
