Survivor Samoa Review

0:01 And we are back with day 19 of 46 and 46 I just finished watching Survivor Samoa Natalie white this one thank goodness it gets better every time Eric gona gave his oh okay so one of my drinking rules for today because I had four drinking rules for Samoa and the last one was when Natalie white wins I was supposed to chug a drink now I'm not camera because it'll take forever I will just have a sip in her honor so I love I love the fact that Natalie wins this season mainly because the people in the final two the other two people in the final three I'm not the biggest fan of but today you're joined by Sarah who when last we did this did Survivor China and Survivor maresis so Sarah just getting right into it what were your first thoughts when you when you first watched the season whenever it was and has your opinion on the overall season changed as the years have progressed okay well you're going to be a little bit surprised but this was the first time I watched the season all the way through okay yeah so I just like avoided Samoa for the longest time like there's still a few us Seasons I have not watched all the way through and I was like okay I'll go ahead and watch it I mean it's not like

1:21 A terrible season but it had its moments but overall I was pretty disappointed it's mid yeah like there's a lot of things wrong with this season and we won't talk about the editing too much even though that is a big issue but talk about is the same thing with a lot of these teen seasons of there's a lot of forgettable pre merg people like I just watched all of this today and I can tell you Betsy and I can tell you Ben Browning off the top of my head and one of them is for a positive the other one has been and I guess Russell Swan but that's because he almost dies so it's very hard to get around this and I tweeted this out earlier I spent most of the Prem merge looking at the funny the funny 115 funny 115 articles from 10 years ago while laying in the bed because I would rather do that then watch the Prem merge of this season and it's not it's not overly Russell heavy [Music] as I remembered but that's not saying much because Heroes versus Villains very much

2:41 Is Russell heavy just like how I remembered and I can I'm excited to watch it tomorrow but so going into this I know you said you hadn't watched this all the way through what have you heard about the season and were those things that were being told to you about this season did they end up coming true or did you see it a lot differently than other people did no I mean I think Natalie is very deserving of the win I know that's a hot take is Russ yeah I mean I think that you know I've heard obviously a lot of bad remarks about Russell most of them were all valid you know I do appreciate his passion and fight for the game I will say because a lot of the players on this season did not have that fight imp passion for the game they might have had that fight and passion for each other but not really for the game AKA Shambo but yeah I mean that's the one positive thing I can say about Russell is he did have a passion for the game but I loved I loved watching Natalie win Natalie win yeah and I want to touch right on this because anyone that doesn't know me at this point I don't believe in the concept of robbed because you can not be robbed in a game where

4:01 A jury is going to decide their own criteria the only robbed person in the history of the show is Siran game changers and that's it the sir didn't receive any votes and she still went home so the perception that Russell was somehow robbed or that it was somehow such an overly bitter jury that he only got two votes I call BS because I've already watched Fiji gabone Guatemala maresis Thailand All Seasons where the jury were very pissed off and they were they were showing that they were pissed off and they were attacking people very personally in some in some aspects here this jury is so tame yeah like no one's really going after any like Shambo goes after Mick and Natalie but no one's attacking anyone even Eric who's drunk as doesn't really go over the line with anything and so this perception that somehow this jury was so warped with hatred exactly yeah exact what I was shocked about at the end like going into final tribal I was like I don't even feel like these people are that bitter towards Russell like it didn't even didn't give me that Vibes like when they were getting voted

5:22 Out and stuff like I did not feel any Vibes that they were super bitter at Russell no I think even like da Dave ball or somebody even says like Russell's like Russell's killing it in the game so I don't I don't know I mean I know what it is I know it's this revisionist history that people like to put on earlier seasons of oh yeah that's the season that Russell was robbed or that the bit the jury was bitter it's like just rewatch the season and really tell me if you think that's still the case and I feel like this time around I really I tried to pay more attention to Natalie even though we don't get much Natalie content I tried to pay attention to the content that we were given and a lot of the Natalie content that we were given is her bond people that eventually vote for her yeah she bonds with Laura and Kelly she bonds with CGI Brett they're Prayer Warriors together during the challenge and they're killing the challenge and she's like yeah God's guided your hands and it was so funny because they end up losing the I know okay that was one of my comments was all the God and Faith Like coms that were made and like none of them were true like Shambo was like God gave me a dream God gave a dream Dave is gonna be voted out tonight no didn't happen no yeah didn't have you're the only one that voted for Dave in that situation St chambo I'm sorry

6:42 No but like watching it this time around and paying attention to just the Natalie edit I think there is a lot of positives that go into her game primarily the fact that it's a social game and as long as you are good with a lot of these folks will probably you know at least receive some type of credit and I think the big thing that she says at final tribal is I read the room and saw hey these two P people pissed off this crazy guy why would I want to do that and she got to the end that way and I think that's a very smart thing to say in a situation like that you know what again own that she was perceived as the weak one like she was perceived you know as the when that was just hiding in the shadows like she owned that game like she wasn't afraid to admit that like you know she was trying to lessen her Threat Level because she saw other women who had bigger personalities than her get voted out and taken out and so she was like I use that as part of my strategy and the fact that she owned that is very commendable because you can literally play any game and win in Survivor and like you said it's literally just about your you know read on the jury what they're looking for and play into that and that's what she did yes we saw it perfectly

8:03 Last season with token chain of JT realizing hey these people care about this honor integrity type stuff so let's lean in let's lean into that more than leaning into hey I play the game strategically and put you guys all up there keny and Charlie like perfect example yeah Kenzie and Charlie yes and so you know I spent years you know dying on this Natalie white you know Hill of these people like people that still think to this day that Russell deserve to win do not understand the game because if they understood what the game is actually about they would see okay yeah there's a very big flaw in this person's game every single time they play or at least the next two times because we won't count Redemption Island he's just strategic and it comes off as crazy like he first episode he's clocked by three different people saying yeah this guy is kind of paranoid he's kind of going all over the place we don't trust him that should not be the case on the fir in the first episode ever and so I think you know obviously the next season he is looked at as a goat I would say he's kind of a goat in this season too because outside of him sitting next to like Shambo and

9:23 Mick I don't think Russell wins against anyone in the final six yeah I like I think he loses to Json I think obviously he loses to Brett he does lose to Natalie I think that yeah he probably beats Mick maybe and he definitely beats Shambo because the jury as this comment as Thomas says in the comments the jury hates Shambo and there's this whole mini story arc where everyone's like oh yeah Shambo might get the galoo votes as she says at the end it's like what are you talking about that it's absolutely not going to happen Natalie over I mean obviously she's not some alltime or anything and I and that's fine and she doesn't have to be she has her million but I do think that people should you know especially super fans and I feel like super fans do I feel like the people that are teetering between casual and Super Fan do need to give her more credit as you know super fans of the show and also I was wondering speaking of final three why do everyone hate mix so much like because he's speckless right I had no idea what that word meant but you don't really see that edit of like people hating me like you don't see confessionals of being like oh I can't stand Mick or whatever and I'm like why are they so yeah and I and I tried

10:43 To pay attention to the f44 as a whole this time and it did seem like Jon and Natalie were the only other two people that were being very vocal like talking to people mix's never really shown doing much like Jon even says it's me and Russell Natalie you know I mean it's that's always a move that everyone goes back to is the Eric cardono vote it the three of them are sitting there and Jon says hey maybe we should think about doing this and Natalie is the one that goes and plants a little Natalie seeds in people's heads and say hey you guys will still have the numbers even if we do vote this guy out but Mick has never really shown to be doing anything else and I think the prime like when Brett asked that question about did you get to know me or well ask the question that was supposed to be did you get to know me and Mick had no idea think I think that's what it was I think that Mick didn't put the time in to get to know a lot of those folks out there and I think that maybe where a lot of the hatred but once again those people were bitter towards Mick they weren't like and they didn't even they didn't even on him they just asked him questions to say hey we don't like you I'm gonna like switch gears this no please do please do so I feel like this season had the worst challenges

12:04 I have ever seen oh my gosh can we just talk for a minute they had a Bowling Challenge yeah bowling baseball they had bot ball right yeah b ball baseball bowling they threw disc at or threw a disc just to get a spear like they like had to throw like one desk you know but I'm like did they just go to like the fun park or something to get like inspiration for these challenges like they had no family visits they had like it was Samoa is very I hate saying mid because I it's a stupid word but I'm gonna keep on saying it's a very mid the challenges are bad there's no family visit it's horribly edited where it's like okay yeah we want you to pay attention to this guy because he's coming back next season for Heroes versus Villains it's like I don't care show me everyone else show me why I should care about Dave ball or Eric Cardona or any of these folks and it's just like no Russell you pay attention to Russell this dude doesn't even win why do I why do you want us to and I understand I want to put this comment up there I will always respect you know Finding Idols not without Clues like yes that is that is a gamechanging everyone does it now like it's I get it I really do

13:24 And I'm not trying to discredit that either because that is that is something that we had never seen before I mean technically Gary hogaboom kind of did it because he didn't actually have the clue but whatever so I get it's just I feel like a lot of the Russell Fanboys is kind of neglect that there is a very big problem with the social aspect of the game but going back to the challenges they suck they're horrible they just not have good budgeting That season they saving it for her versus villain which started like right after this so I think because they do have a family visit for they do have a right yeah they do have a family visit for Heroes versus villain because it's Colby and his brother and I think they saved the money for that season even though they still did bowling in Heroes versus Villains and I think they filmed in the same location as well yeah the challenges are definitely not I think that where the season is where the season starts to become fine is at the merge because love it or hate it the faux fo4 is the is the storyline so what did you think of faxo as a whole before we get to their four I mean again like the pre-merge cast is just terrible like

14:45 Hated it so yeah I mean I like watching it all the way through seeing how you know they were down in numbers that significantly and then the final three being all fooa like that is super commendable and it's like crazy that they didn't turn on each other but it's I mean kind of I agree and this is not the I24 like the I24 despite my opinions on aie I can sit there and watch Cook Islands every single time and pull for them every single time here yes I'm rooting for Foo fo to a certain point because at a certain point it's like yeah to get rid of some of these people in galoo but at the end of the day I just really want you to get rid of Russ and not because I think he's going to win this because I don't want him here anymore because I'm done with it and so as F four moov as fo foa moves on there's even a moment where I think Monica tries to flip the vote on to Russell and we shown confessionals by Json and I think Mick saying hey maybe we should do this and then they don't and in that moment this time around I'm like oh that's what got Monica in second chances I guess because Monica doesn't exist this season yeah agreed I was very confused like when I first watched the season I was like oh

16:05 Monica I recognize her and then like she didn't really do anything and I was like how did she get asked back yeah how did not even how did she get asked back how did fans vote her in to Second Chances over like t- bird and other folks but primarily t- bird like I will never understand I will never understand how Monica got in on Second Chances over even over mam C like that it is crazy because mam C season had just aired and they still put Monica on there but her one episode where she was the main character I loved it I loved you know every she was trying she made Russell paranoid and as we'll learn this season anytime you make Russell paranoid he gets bitter and he you know and he gets pissy and he votes people out yeah so once again it's like okay yeah everyone likes to and complain about bitter juries when their hero this guy every like he gets bitter very it's very easy to get under his skin and we learn about it again next season and I think you know he would vote people out based on emotions too like if he didn't like somebody like if they didn't like him like he was that insecure he was like oh if they don't like me I'm not even gonna try like I'm gonna vote him out like versus Natalie where you know her perception was maybe if somebody's not too fond of her

17:25 She's going to get to know them she's going to get them to like her and that's the opposite between the two is that you know Russell just never gave anybody a chance to get to know them if someone didn't like him he was like okay bye I'm like no yeah that's not that's not how you and I think when they're doing the rights of Passage and I think Brett says about Ben who we're gonna talk about sadly he had like the worst social game ever it's like yeah either Ben or Russell but Ben yeah we'll touch on him later we have you know this comment I just wish that Natalie had more singular moves to her name I'm going with the numbers is pretty much every voting confessional she gave she wasn't compelling that's not compelling doesn't win Survivor because Dr Bob not compelling having the moves to your name doesn't win you Survivor because Ethan Z didn't have any moves to his name one Survivor you know going with the numbers is a winning strategy because Sandra did it twice even in situations where she didn't want to do it she still did it and won twice so I once again this is kind of like I understand that Natalie is not fun television I get it I really do and I and it sucks

18:45 That we don't have the Natalie white edit I don't think it would be compelling either but at least give us more than I think 16 confessionals that she got this season and she doesn't get her first one until episode four I believe I we don't learn name until episode three I think oh so moving on from the two of them Jon the other the other relevant person in this in this Alliance I guess what were your thoughts on him I wasn't a big fan of him pre-merge he kind of grew on me a little bit at merge but I mean pre merge he had a very like you know oh we lost again like you know that kind of added to raining yeah did r a lot so like yeah he grew on me at merge like I liked him as a person in general but he there wasn't much to him yeah I mean for me Json will always like the two things that Al up for me and Json in the Prem merge is one that Mick just assumes because you know stereotypes are a but just assumes that Json can swim and it's like yeah you better be glad that he can because the stereotype is we can't and he was a water polo he was on the National Water Polo team so like good on you but two with

20:05 Him calling out Ben twice at two different tribals that all that's always gonna stand out to me because that he St his ground on that he was like voting Ben like get behind me or don't like I love that he did not even negotiate on that so that was that was his move over Russell like you know because Russell wanted to keep Ben he's like no like it's going to be Ben so yeah and Json has a moment during he was like if you guys keep him tonight I will quit yeah and it's like normally if someone says that it's like okay we'll just let them quit then but in that moment it's like yeah I don't know what I would do in that situation because yeah it is kind of get to the point where if he keeps on doing he's gonna do I might hit him which would get me kicked off the show and I'm forfeiting money so I will say besides that yeah I do agree that Json pre- merg just like okay he's just kind of there and then merge he it's almost like the Albert from South Pacific where it's like he says a lot of stuff about what he wants to do but he'll never actually do it like he'll think he'll say oh yeah maybe this is the time that we pull this move or maybe this is time that we pull this move and then doesn't do any of it and it's like okay well at a certain point and I think that's why people may have perceived Json as maybe not winning at the end because he was basically yanking people's chains the entire

21:25 Time and then just voting them out outside of f44 the only other person that really gets a heavy edit in that tribe is Ben we don't have to talk much time about Ben sucked pre-merge he's the first person to ever get kicked out of a challenge Jeff calls him out on it and he says I want to say like he called him called himself a renegade or some silly you know he has this whole thing with Yasmine or Yasmin we won't we won't go any farther than that but on the other end we have galoo and galoo is definitely the even though they're winning all the challenges this season they're definitely the car crash tribe of the Season what were your thoughts on Galo I mean Shambo that's all what about Shambo well at first when I first start watching the season I was like okay maybe she'll be like Kathy you know maybe she'll have a story arc and all the like from mares and I was like no heart no I remember watching this for the first time I really felt for Shambo on her original tribe because it didn't seem like people were giving her the time of

22:46 Day and then as you watch the seasons like if you continue to watch the season like I do every time I watch it's like oh man okay she is she's annoying but once again she's not like it's not hatable even when she is losing the chickens and she's breaking the fishing equipment and you know doing all this other stuff it's still not I think when she starts this one-sided rivalry with Laura like Laura really doesn't do anything to antagonize Shambo and Shambo is just consistently saying oh yeah Laura sucks Laura sucks we gotta get rid of her I watching at this time I was hoping to see something that would say oh that's why she doesn't like her and at least in edit there is nothing that happens to make Shambo hate Laura as much as she does do you can you think of anything off top of your head or I think it was just because like Laura was also an older woman and so was Shambo and Laura was getting along with the younger crowd but Shambo wasn't so I feel like it was more of a jealousy thing because like Laura and Monica were super close obviously and I mean Laura got along with most everybody on her tribe and shambo's like well she's an older woman I'm an older woman like why like why is she getting along with people but I'm not so I don't know I kind of feel like it might have been that I mean that's Pro that probably is the case I didn't think about that question do you think

24:06 That Shambo got so much hate from her original tribemates because Shambo turned on turned on them was trouble already Brewing prior to that trouble was already Brewing PRI of that because the round that Russell Swan went out they planned on voting for Shambo or Monica depending on who you believe at that tribal and you know they Shambo have been on the outs the entire time to the to the point where the men started thinking hey maybe we'll bring her in as a number to go after the women who are being led by Laura and Monica but I do think that her flipping on them was like the nail in the coffin but like even during you know she gets sent to faoa twice and the second time she asked Russell Swan please don't send me over there again like you just sent me and Russell is like oh yeah you got to do it for the tribe and it's like no that's you can see how that might make her feel like and why she would and I understand why she flips I support her flipping was super cute when they made her leader I was like oh like the guys were like let's make it a big deal and like nominate Shambo as the new leader and Monica's GNA be confession was like I think they may have made a vote beforehand because there's no way that Shambo should be winning should be the leader right

25:26 Now I wanted to touch on that real quick why did they put so much emphasis on tribe leaders this season when it had nothing to do with anything except for he wore a necklace yeah agreed I was I didn't understand that either yeah Jeff even brings up he's like oh yeah whatever his name is Mick why are you not wearing your necklace why are you not wearing your leadership necklace and he's like oh it's bad luck and then they lose the challenge anyway so it doesn't matter yeah I don't know why they put yeah go ahead touch on like some comments that Jeff made this season that I was just like oh wow the audacity to say that like what so I feel like during tribals and stuff he would just call people out like there was like I don't remember which tribal it was but he was calling out Shambo and was like when Shambo was just saying that she liked John and like you know like she was like I didn't want to like I didn't want him to go and she didn't even vote for him you know and then Jeff was like oh great working of the jurk some comment like that and then she was like no this is serious so he also had a comment I think the round before that the round that John did go where Shambo goes you know there wasn't much scrambling going on I'd be surprised that they're scrambling and he's like

26:46 Shambo how could you possibly think that there's no like there people are fighting to stay in the game and yeah okay I guess Jeff did have and he was talking about the biggest one was when he was talking about the teacher student analogy between Russell and Monica he was like so Monica like you know here you are like Russell's your teacher and you're the student and now you're trying to be the teacher and like it's switching and I was like how can you say that like this is definitely the era where Jeff starts to become Jeff yeah for everyone listening you know what that means this is where Jeff starts to become Jeff and in some situations it is funny like when barassi is saying oh yeah like we were right there and he's like you guys would still be out there building the puzzle if you know if you hadn't lost already you know him going off on Ben at both the challenge and at tribal saying hey your percentage what do you think and he was like oh yeah you know he couldn't believe what he was hearing with Ben and it started in token jeans with everything that coach would say and he Jeff would just egg him on every time because he knew he was getting Prime content out of him yeah another thing and this goes along with this comment and we're talking still talking about

28:07 Galo this time around I so when I did 42 and 42 my goal was to just follow Brett the entire time and then I got lost like episode two or three this time I tried my damst to follow Brett the entire time and first of all he gives the first confessional of the Season which is insane two he's the one when Jeff ask what's the name of the merge tribe it is Brett who says it but there are so many times this season where there are things going on and Brett is actually just not there and then all of a sudden they'll do a cut and they'll cut and Brett is there again which leads to the whole CGI Brett thing because there are large portions of this season they don't ask Brett a question at Tribal Council from merge until I believe like final eight or seven like we are not showing that entire time and it's insane like he is not the auction at one point I don't think Brett offers to pay for anything at any point like he's just not there and then all of a sudden they literally could have just built up Brett as the heroic Underdog taking on the villainous Russell and said he got nothing from Brett and KN knew he wasn't going to reach the end yes

29:28 They try so hard in the last two episodes yeah to make you think oh this guy might win it's like no nothing you've shown us makes us think that he's gonna do anything other than lose at final four I know and like they kept saying in the game like how big of a threat he was and I was like how like he hasn't done anything and obviously it's just because we got no content from him but yeah that was disappointing yeah it was it's once again it's not like Brett came off as the most compelling person and I and I understand I get it you just had coach last season you know gabone didn't have these Larger than Life characters but because it was such a car crash season you could make a case of like hey for Samoa you know our winner isn't the most compelling and the person that W that gave the you know the villain of the season the run for their money is also not that compelling so let's just give the villain the entire story arc the entire season that's just focused only on him and I can from my editing aspect I do agree with that do you think Brett was given wasn't given a level Underdog edit because he loses ultimately because usually someone in the spot doesn't I don't think so I don't think that I don't think that's the reason he gets a purple eded what do you think no I think it was

30:49 A lot to do with like what you just said like they just weren't very compelling characters so they chose to just focus on the villain and because Russ was coming back on her versus villain they had to Hype him up like I think the timing of the season was unfortunate for Natalie and for brat and some of these more like under edited characters even like Kelly was irrelevant but like we never heard from her like you know she has dreads she has she has blonde dreads and there's a part where they get they want a reward Challenge and Kelly's giving a confessional and then they cut to her in the in the in the water and the next confessional starts with I'm Puerto Rican and I'm like what and then it cuts to Monica get the confessional I'm like okay yeah that makes sense okay all right but yeah a lot of this a lot of this even a lot of the merge cast is forgettable it's just that the way they go a lot of these people go out is what makes them at least in our heads you know super fans memorable yes we me texted about Dave ball earlier why you are a fan of Dave like I don't get it because on this season he needs someone he needs someone and like Dave's

32:09 Funny like he's though the comment you said he's very unique he stands out on the cast he's not like the rest of the Frat party or you know like summer camp crowd that's on the cast he's very unique I picture him as being like little Vagabond living out of his van he's like that crazy uncle who comes and brings you a chocolate covered orange for Christmas you know just pops in but yeah that's my take on Brett or on Dave is that he is very unique so I will give him that but just like oh he's so boring like so that so that is your only reason that the only thing against him is that he's boring right because yeah and I just feel like just the comments he would say I was just like really like I don't feel like he really had much of a passion for the game either like he wasn't that strategic I mean none of them really were but none of them were yeah I think the most strategic people in the season were probably like Russell Eric John fencher yeah who Monica I mean Monica Laura La I think I think because she was clocked as a threat is what ultimately brings her back for blood versus water is the fact that you know people did care

33:29 I feel like in a season where it's bogged down by Russell the fact that we got Laura and Monica back specifically I think is telling to what production saw of them you know I because episode we got so much of Monica that's it's like okay she had to been doing this the rest of the time and we just didn't get shown it Laura is being looked at as the Devil by Shambo and it's being looked at as you know this big Threat by the fa4 so like obviously she was doing something out there that warranted her coming back for blood versus water the next question do you think in real time that Jeff didn't go do you think in real time that Jeff didn't go to Brett for tribal counsil questions or do you think that was strictly an editing thing it was an editing thing I feel like Jeff asked probably everyone I mean not probably Jeff asked everyone questions once CE again it's Brett and Brett every confessional that we do get of Brett he's just very monotonous I like he was like Star Struck over Natalie too it was really cute he had those little love eyes for her okay so I'm not crazy I thought that like you could see the love in his eyes at final Tribal Council when they like paned to his face

34:50 When he was like watching Natalie I was like yeah and they're both Prayer Warriors and like that was such a wholesome little scene though I tweeted this out earlier and I don't think I'm being sarcastic by saying I think my favorite wholesome moment of the season is Natalie asking Brett you're a prayer Warrior right and then they like hold hands and then they go up in the challenge only for them to ultimately lose the challenge which is I don't even know what that says about anything other than I like that moment my obviously my favorite moment of the season and we talked about this person boot but in the history of jury speeches for me Eric cardones is always going to be number one yeah even though he drunkenly Rambles through all of it I love you know I love the fact that he is he just straight up says Natalie you know you have my vote I think everyone else is kind of being secretive with the exception of Shambo but I loved Eric's everything in his speech and it's crazy because like er during the season it was like okay yeah he's just he's just another guy on a season of just random guys and girls that's where Eric Cardona becomes the character that's when we finally get the

36:10 Eric the Eric edit was in that minute and a half drunken speech do you have favorite jury speeches of all time do you or is that a thing that you do no not particularly like obviously my favorite is Trish and Kayan like that one stands out to me the most but oh my gosh but yeah no when he gave that speech I had heard it before like I had think of it but it was just like so much more powerful after just watching the season and like him saying that I was like whoa yeah it's a whenever I play orgs my goal is always to emulate Eric whenever I'm onon the jury which is like always it's always to emulate Eric because it's such a great moment everyone in the jur like jurry questions wise no one really sticks out like we have the mini flirting thing with Brett and Mick but outside of that like not really Jon asking and I think that was a good when Json asked hey tell everyone what you guys are actually about and if you don't I will tell them and he does say hey they all told the truth like these are this is what everyone is
