Survivor Heroes v Villains Review

0:01 And we are back day 20 of Survivor 46 and 46 I just finished watching Heroes versus Villains Sandra has now won for the second time thank goodness I'm done with the Russell stuff for a day so that's exciting and I'm getting ready to go into the Dark Ages so we're gonna drag this out as long as possible to you know keep me away from that for as long as possible today we are joined once again by Jake coming back from Pearl Islands from the tribe of nerds podcast Jake how are you good how are you I'm doing well and for the first time either 42 and 42 or 4 46 and 46 we have Lauren from the reality after show we finally got you on I know we tried a couple times the last time and we finally got you here for my favorite season of All Time spoilers you know I'm going to jump the gun by about an hour here's villains is going to get a five out five again for me and I think it's because every time it's kind of like certain Seasons I go in like Thailand this time I went into Thailand thinking okay is it actually this bad every time I watch it and then this time it was yeah it's still that bad here's there's villains I always go on thinking okay is it actually still that good does it actually hold up and yes it does the pre-merge doesn't even drag like I thought

1:21 It did in my head Lauren we're GNA start with you what is your what's been your storyline with Heroes versus Villains like in your lifetime you know when you first watched it and how it may have up came up or down in your rankings throughout the years so first off I didn't know there were any of these crazy Survivor super fans out there when it was all going down for me I didn't know Survivor people didn't watch Survivor at my school so I watched it with my mother and Heroes versus Villains I was a sophomore in high school vividly remember it sitting on the couch watching it in the basement it was perfect I love this season I do you just can't not every rewatch of it's not as though it gets better and better but it's just still holds up every single time and you can't go wrong with the awesome characters that you have Jake yeah so I start I didn't start watching live till a year after this with Redemption Island somehow but I went back watched all the seasons before this and I think Heroes versus Villains was like the first season that I got on DVD and just like I remember I watched it through and then at one point like a year after I got the DVD then like my bunch of my cousins and family were over for a family gathering and we all sat down for

2:42 Like a full day and just binged through all of Heroes versus Villains and it was just it's just a great experience every single time the cast is legendary for you know the most part aside from the two people that I think we're going to talk about but like you that you can argue are not people from gabone I was gonna say Candace and Danielle but yeah we will C Candace for sure but like yeah otherwise I mean it's just a legendary cast and I like almost everybody that like they picked to be on this cast even if I don't like them as a person like I still think they should be on this season so and going off of that because I do agree with you as far as that's concerned and I've always referred to it as Survivor the movie like whenever people ask oh yeah recommend a season to me I don't recommend this because you can't recommend this first you have to recommend four to five seasons I feel like to really appreciate what this season brings to the table and it once again just like all star even though you know I'm not big on All Stars it is a season that is like a fun little cap on this era of Survivor I think the first eight seasons are the allstar is the All-Star era and then the nine through the 20 are the this the era of the big characters and we get a lot of those big characters

4:02 In this season at the same time and I do think that it leads to as close as we're going to get to a cinematic experience I compare cabone to a cartoon this is our this is our movie and I think that every time that I watch this I agree with you it's just like okay I can sit there yes it's not going to get any better it's almost like watching my favorite movie where it's like okay yeah I know what I'm getting and I love it no matter what I can watch Moneyball every day and might be tired of it's not even my favorite movie but it's one of them and yes I do agree that even though I don't enjoy some people on the actual cast I understand why everyone is here and everyone plays their roles however small or large they are to Perfection and especially coming off of Samoa which I had you know I have obviously have issues with for everyone that listened yesterday Lauren coming into the season as the Super Fan that watched it live when you saw I don't know if you actually did you see the cast announced first or were did you go in blind I did see the cast announced first because I was so excited for the anticipation of it because they announced what the theme the season was going to be in the rures and also if y'all remember there was the leadup and buildup of you saw the whole Russell with Richard Hatch actually they did the whole thing that we got to see previous

5:22 From other winners and just the buildup in general was awesome so I yes I knew who the cast was going to be and that's reason why I was so excited to watch it because you're waiting forever for some of these people to come back and then you're wondering are they going to deliver this season how are they going to adapt to playing with all returning players because when you play a newbie season way different they don't know who you are they don't know how you're going to play but when you return everyone knows your game are you going to switch up your game are you going to play the same what worked for you last time what didn't work for you oh and also in this era we have a lot of people that played their first time with other people that had never even watched the show so all of a sudden all of you have played and all of you have at least watched one season you would at least Hope they've watched one season and we're going to talk about the Eraser of one of those Seasons a little bit but okay so the actual question I was going to ask you is did any people stand out to you as like oh man that's curious that they're here I'm not like upset or you know maybe I am but where the people that were just like okay that's a weird choice but let's see how it goes I mean obviously the obvious one is going to be Candace and the reason why I will say this is she was such in my opinion her one biggest thing she had was the Mutiny in Cook Islands

6:43 Yes you can say that all day long but other people had highlight moments that overshadow even that moment in particular and the thing about Candace is she didn't deliver in my opinion on her second go she was still the background of the season not really a standout character so and you have to know she watched her season obviously she had to of and then she comes back and hit it with something put it to the Grind let's see what you got Jake yeah you watched this in a different type of order did you know who these people were when you watched it not when I watched it the first time but then going back and seen other seasons and then coming back with the context I mean that made it even better to me and it was already good when I watched it with like no context I mean like yeah like Lauren said like Candace I mean she doesn't really still doesn't really do much then you know they get they get to the merge she's been on the bottom the entire pre merge basically of the heroes and just kind of going along with like JT and rubert and whoever's in the majority in Amanda and then she just flips at the Amanda vote with the villains and basically you know she's she was just there for an extra vote and then they're ready

8:03 To just ditch her so like she doesn't she doesn't offer much at all to the season she what her first two seasons she just places eighth both times out of 20 so like well and see for me I actually I disagree with Y all in that as in the aspect of like she didn't do anything because she did exactly what I expected her to do coming off of Cook Islands which is okay yeah cenace is going to flip at some point because of course she's going to flip at some point that's what she's known for and so she didn't she the biggest reason that Candace stands out to me is the tribe that she was on and I tweeted this out earlier you know I think that it should have been Danielle and K swapped because when we talked about Panama a couple weeks ago or last week I even said is Danielle on the villains tribe because she voted out the Great White Hope Terry Deets and I think that is actually the reason like there's literally nothing else in that season even her being on Casia is not inherently bad because s is also on casiah and no one looks at her as a villain even though casiah was the were the villainous folk of that season I guess as a group Danielle and SRI are not who what I would consider villains in that season meanwhile you do have Candice who does jump ship in Cook Islands and you know watching Cook Islands this time around it's like okay the edit that she's getting Exile

9:24 Is very heroic maybe it's you know maybe this is where they're looking oh yeah she was stuck with her Alliance and when we talked about Cook Islands you know that's what we talked about a lot was the fact that she St stood with her Alliance and that she wasn't she didn't waiver even when she you know was with this other group I get it the Candace still but you know her downfall was amazing this season because I'm not a Candice fan so seeing her immediately go out after flipping on everyone was amazing watching the Ponderosa the round that she gets there and everyone just gives her the cold shoulders like yeah I get it outside of Candace for me the two that really stood out were the gabone people like I know that they needed they needed representation from nine to 20 even though they have no nines on this season but I didn't think you needed two people from gabone you could have had one person from gabone and one person from vanatu because that's the only season missing from this hold on and honestly I would have rather you guys have and give us someone from I guess van watatu is a really hard where's the hero in Van watu yeah I was say Chad I think Chad would be the hero of Van wat see

10:44 Chad again hold on they had to have sugar there they had to and here's okay if you have sugar then bring back if you want to bring back someone from Van watu that's a villain bring back Twila bring back Twilight bring back I mean we really don't need another Amy run because we just got our Micronesia you could bring back Chris who is one of the most underrated charactersvillain winners of all time you could do a lot but having two gabone players really stood out to me Jake I know you had your hand raised what's up so I will say defending the sugar and Randy cast and I think gabone a theme of it was a Heroes versus villain thing sugar was the one who wanted good guys to win wanted all like the bad people to get voted out and then Randy was like trying to be like the grumpy angry villain the entire season so like and had the satisfying downfall so I will defend both of them being there and they were opposed to each other all season so like I totally get why they were cast Bob literally won because of sugar because sugar easily could have had Matty would have won that season so she got exactly what she wanted on who she wanted to win granted I know we're not talking about I still think she

12:04 Played an awesome game that season but Randy in particular he also needs to be there he is the true Testament of a villain if you see even going back to the rewards when they won on his season he's snickering at them he's eating his food and he's like and someone said you want to share he's like nah you know what I mean he just he's there he has to be there I know sometimes even so when you don't say it's a high tier season you still have great characters from the season yeah no and I do agree with that because like I said this is the era of characters because if it wasn't James would not be on this season because James and we talked about this in the China review James is one of a very few characters that have three time they play three different times and they don't change at they like James stays the same every single time to the point where today I don't even remember this confession oh no he didn't say it confessional he said it during a tribal he said like the social game is a distraction or something like that and it's like what are you talking about like that's literally what is James I don't I'm surprised you and he's the one applauding Amanda at the first tribal for her you know finally you know coming to her own voice and like sitting up straight and talking and not pouting and it's like okay yeah if you're com if you're commenting

13:24 Her for this we should be commenting you for like actually having some type of social strategic game and we can't through three seasons through three seasons we can't do that with him but I also understand that because we are in the era of characters we have to have James back we have to have Rob Mariano back because it is you know villains we have to have people like coach and Tyson back even though Tyson got screwed with the edit we had to have coach and Tyson back and I think like we keep saying overall before we go into you know the actual meat and potatoes of the season the cast sets every to go exactly the way it does okay I'm going to get this out of the way first because I spent a lot of time hating on this yesterday the if I were to ever give a negative to this season it would always be it is very russle heavy and that really becomes really annoying especially watching things back to back but as everyone always says it's always fun watching his downfall in two straight seasons and that's what makes this era so excit these last two seasons so exciting is the fact that I get to watch this person who I do not like at all lose twice where he is so arrogant the entire time telling people

14:44 You have no chance of beating me it's like okay yeah they I guess they don't and then he you know he gets to the end Lauren you watched Samoa live at that point were you that were you one of those Russell fans you know villains did you need more Russell coming off of s or could you have waited a little bit longer you knew instantly based on the edit in Samoa that he was going to be back because they wouldn't have given that crazy edit if he was not going to be and the thing I will say about Russell he has the worst jury management ever and he does doesn't understand he lacks the self-awareness you can play the best strategic whatever game you want to play but if you cannot tailor to what the jury wants then you will not win the season and that's what he didn't learn from Samoa but to be fair he did not have an opportunity to watch his season and see how people reacted to him and I think that's a huge Advantage some people have being able to watch your season and knowing how people react to you and then you can change up your gameplay he didn't have that opportunity so he just lacks social awareness and self-awareness two seasons in a

16:05 Row I mean yeah you're not gonna have me disagree with you Jake yeah I don't disagree either but like I yeah he didn't get an opportunity to watch Samoa before going out there but then you see him Redemption Island obviously he does the same exact thing again and he I'm sure he had at least had an opportunity to watch the other two and then you get to he goes on Australian Survivor many years after this has all gone down H Mania has gone down and he still doesn't change up his game he still lacks awareness and people still boot him because he's toxic so like I don't think he can ever learn yeah and the issue is and Lauren I do agree with you know he hadn't been able to seen the season back but he lived in that moment of final tribal and in that moment of final tribal even if he thought that like cuz one of the one of the revisionist history things out there is that the Samoa jury was so pissed off well I can tell you just watching it yesterday that jury as compared to a lot of jurries that I've just watched the first 18 Seasons they were very mild mannered and if anything they were more attacking Mick for just being Mick anyone else you know they weren't bashing Russell even

17:25 Drunk ass Eric Cardona wasn't like attacking Russell a lot of stuff everyone was being very mild mannered with everything and so you know that's one of the things that like you know the H fans love to bring up his so he just ran into two really pissed off juries it's like that's not the case because vanatu Fiji gabone Allstars Thailand marqueses they all had very pissed off juries and they still voted for you know who won those Seasons but I do feel like you know even if Russell hadn't seen the edit he should have still seen how people may have been leaning during that Samoa final tribal and switch it up even a little bit and he does like the first thing that we see him do is trying to get Danielle and parvity as he doesn't call them dumbass girls or blondes or whatever this time around he just he just refers to them as Daniel and parvy but you can tell he's doing the exact same thing and even at the right before they go to final tribal he tell he's laughing at parvy saying oh parv probably can't even beat Sandra and she sure can't beat me it's like what do you how are you this how do you have this big of an ego that you don't think that parvy could beat you like

18:45 That was such an insane moment to me and so I want to we're gonna we're gonna get the Russell stuff out of the way now so we don't have to talk about him to much the rest of the season do you feel like there is at any point between say Candice going out till the end to the end where there is a prime situation where Russell could have won in a final three and both of y'all can give your opinions no think all right cool and that's the end of rff hands that was that was let's be clear on one pivotal moment in the season Russell and parvy probably aren't even sitting there if Tyson doesn't can I cuss on this yes you can guess [ __ ] up if Tyson does not [ __ ] up the moment they are not sitting in those seats no shot whatsoever yeah go ahead J no I yeah I mean it's just like yeah Tyson screws up so many people's games by doing that like I mean I don't even know like if Tyson doesn't do that I don't even know I think coach is kept in line with Tyson there I think Jerry probably doesn't have that opportunity to flip to flip with Tyson there so she probably sticks with Boston Rob as well so I mean and people say like Boston

20:05 Rob screwed up a lot in Heroes versus Villains as well like I don't I don't necessarily see that I think Rob makes the merge if Tyson doesn't blow everything up so and I agree and it's funny because Tyson blows like getting vot voted out blows up that Alliance but also in the process kind of sets Sandra up to win the game yeah you know if we're if we're trying to Big Brain this but I do like I don't see I didn't see Rob like really doing anything wrong this season because he was only antagonizing the antagonist right from what we're seeing he's not antagonizing parv or Danielle he's only telling Russell like oh you better find the idol or else you're GNA go home like it was it was a fun little measuring contest between the two of them and obviously I'm rooting for Rob in that situation because of how much I don't like Russell that's another thing about Russell not the biggest rert fan and I would take rert side like when they were had their whole Tiff I'm not I'm not a man I'm not an Amanda person at final tribals and I know but I was just gonna go in general but like you I'm a little bit not I'm not a coach person and I you know everything about this man but you know talking about Rob and Tyson and all

21:25 That I think that if Tyson doesn't [ __ ] up like you say we don't get a Sandra win and The Season's probably totally different because the very next episode where they get into the whole fight about oh coaches making Courtney and Sandra set out the reward challenge so that they could lose the immunity challenge so that and they said oh yeah Rob would have never let that happen and I do agree that Rob probably wouldn't have let that happen because Rob doesn't like losing and so you know all of a sudden and soon as he's gone the villain just go like this yeah and we're gonna obious we're going to talk about the JT thing soon but JT is their Saving Grace this season we've talked a lot about the villains so far because they are the main characters on the season on the heroes End early on I mean the first challenge is always going to be iconic one because of all the injuries but two because of the sugar double bird but from there the heroes they just I think parvy says it they have so many egos in that tribe that like they are screwed from the very beginning so what were our thoughts on that Hero's tribe at pre merge we're just talking pre merge for now you go first then yeah so I like looking at it you would think okay physically the heroes are gonna kick some ass like

22:46 You really you have some of the biggest challenge beasts in Survivor history like you have Tom Colby going in you didn't think we didn't think Colby was going to be Superman in a fat suit but like those two I mean James and pre-merge challenges is a beast and then JT won a few and then you have Stephanie who's really good in challenges so like you had a good strong team Amanda one of you so it's just it's wild to me but they just were not cohesive together at all and like especially at puzzles and then you have Boston Rob leading the villains especially in the puzzles and that's where they just Dominate and keep the momentum from most of it and like early on and you know they the heroes get destroyed yeah Lauren my biggest issue with the heroes tribe if you didn't keep up with people outside of the game you were screwed to begin with because Kobe didn't know people he was asking kace do you know all these people so you know with it Stephanie was screwed from the get-go she had no shot to get in with them and they just didn't like Tom those three had zero chance to get out of that tribe they were 100% Going sugar went first because she annoyed the hell everyone that's just point and

24:06 Blank period they probably would have dumped someone else if she was tame but she was not so my thing pre-existing relationships you see it everywhere you see it in orgs lrgs it's who people know it's who they're familiar with they're going to work with them even if they got screwed over from them in a prior game because it's who you know who you feel comfortable with and any you just don't want it to be you for the time being until the game evolves and changes but for the beginning portion it's what you have to do to get by and I will always stand by that those three had no shot to get out of that tribe but kobby did I understand kobby did but he was not supposed to if James doesn't get injured Kobe's out Kobe goes home yes and I do agree with you like I know I just brought up how the hero tribe has all these Egos and I think that ego wise on the villains tribe we really only have two people that have these egos hero child there's at least five where it's like okay yeah you guys really think High highly of yourselves and there's nothing there's no issue with that it's just that if you're losing you probably need to get on the same page at some point because if you don't things will just keep on going and they finally do the James you know banana etiquette happens James goes and they the five of them are strongish and we're going to get to that as well

25:27 So as the season progresses you know we get one of the first iconic legitimate idle plays during we get the second one of the season the three one you know the only time three doesn't make the merge is when she gets idled out but then we get to the Tyson vote out now there are a couple blunders in this season and I think that this one I am less lenient on I'm more lenient on the jt1 we'll talk about that one second I'm less leaning on this because at least from what we are shown Tyson still should have kept his vote like I don't care what Russell's telling him just in case just keep the vote the same way why do you have to why do you why is your vote for parvy mean anything at this point just keep it who and who it's supposed to so I know we get Tyson back you know Seven Seasons later if Tyson's Survivor history ends here is he one of the dumbest survivors of all time I mean you kind of have to look at it that way I mean what his first season he got really arrogant and got completely blindsided and then this time he yeah he makes a very dumb mistake

26:47 That if he just listened to Rob and Sandra and everybody else and just stuck to the split vote then he makes it a lot farther obviously and so that is true I think Lauren he's on the list I wouldn't say it's the dumbest move we saw worst moves before that but you voted yourself out pretty much without putting your name pen dep parchment it's it I love Tyson glad we got to see him later on down the road he was still hilarious in the season when he was there so he still had that character Arc ability and all of that he just went out too soon that's just what happened yeah and like I said the other and I guess we can just get right into that one the JT move because I've alluded to it a few times throughout these first 20 days especially during the token CHS episode this is my and Lauren kind of touched on this earlier as far as Samoa these people have not seen Samoa these people don't know Russell Hans these people have seen Micronesia they have seen parvy a part of a All Women's Alliance and they have seen what happened

28:07 In that season so Optics wise if you're JT and you're sitting on the heroes tribe and you were seeing male by male go on this tribe and you see parvy on the other end in your head especially with you playing with house money at this point because you've already won the game you're already going to try to Big Brain in anyone he was in the middle of most of those hero tribes first tribals so if you're still trying to like say hey I'm you know I don't need Sten I can do this all on my own and you see this and you're trying to come off as a perceptive person you might try to give an idol to a person that you think is on the outs now his issue is just don't do that like don't give the idol to the enemy and Amanda has a great confessional who's like yeah I like we don't know what's going on over there for all we know Russell's in charge over there which is pretty much the case but I've always given like it's a dumb move I get it I feel like people kind of remove context from it though because as a player out there with the Optics I feel like it's an understandable dumb move if that makes sense do you guys agree disagree I feel like JT I mean you'll talk about his game changers game later on but like I just J

29:28 Is someone and again he just basically CU nobody had seen Samoa yet he basically was the most recent winner and like and so you know he's of course he's gonna just go For Broke and try to take big swings but like he doesn't need to take all these big risks and that's JT's biggest plw as a player is he just doesn't stop trying to take risks and like slow down so I you know I think he definitely needed someone to give like tell him JT this isn't a good idea and I think like if sir and Tom are there I don't think they live yeah instead You' got rbert and Colby just like yeah like how's that letter going along bud and it's like what laen I love a gamble but that gamble is not it and the biggest issue I have with it is you need a little bit of a confirmation of something you they get what a handshake a hug after the challenge you have no idea what's going on over there and I get you want to try and assist someone so you can bring them to your side later doing that not the way to do it because you don't even know what's going on if you now we're in the freaking New Era right you go on the journey the great journey as Jeff would say that's where you get to know people

30:48 And kind of get the ins and outs what's maybe or maybe not going on here you have nothing I mean you see Colby talking to him on the freaking platform and saying this is what you're gonna do you're go up to Russell you're gonna in the JT or whoever and get this from him it's and I'll say this Courtney to this day was robbed because she actually did well in that challenge and we didn't see it because we had to watch that conversation yeah we have to and it's and it's frustrating because I mean I'm not the highest T you know token CH arur versus Villains and definitely not game changers but I like I do feel like and I legacies Are all what's the word everyone has their own opinion on people's legacies JT is one of those people where it's like yeah I feel like some people say that it tanked after this season and I disagree I think that this is playing with house money at this point like I said you just kind of go balls of the wall because who cares I've already won and if it works now all those people that say that I wasn't the strategic person in the me and step Duo can now say oh look at that JT just pulled off this big brained 5D by giving the idol to someone that needed it yes it backfired and yes it t it kind of sucks

32:08 The air out of the heroes tribe for the rest of the game but even at the beginning of the game and I feel like people that's another thing people kind of just forget about the first half of this game is JT's in a great spot every single time and people even give confessionals about how JT is basically running the tribe because he's always the determining vote he has the sugar edit from gabone where sugar is always the determining factor in those tribals JT is that person this season and I do feel like you know it sucks that it happened but obviously it leads to one of the most iconic moments in the history of the show and that is what this season is above everything else is just iconic moment after iconic moment to the point where you forget that sir gets idled out pre-merge you forget get about you know the double bird I mean unless you're a Super Fan you forget about the double bird you forget about the Seesaw and the episode one with that was it coach and Russell coach Russell in the seaw it's just a little cute little moment that you forget that the game was getting to Rob whatever that means because the merge is so much fun okay so I guess we can we can touch on that really quickly we don't have to go into much depth what was that all

33:29 About it was getting the me it was getting the best of them what were we doing there I think seen the previews when I was watching this live I saw the previews I'm I remember right now don't ask me how I remember I was standing in this restaurant I was out of braavos okay and I see the preview for the next episode of Survivor and I see it's getting the best of me like it's just and my memory is weird with Survivor I remember places that I was when I see different things but yeah he was all right stood right up he was all right I also think it's funny like because I think I guess they might not have caught it the first time so like they had you know a cameraman kind of reenact one point you literally just like you it makes it look like Rob just fell down and then all of a sudden you look and he's got like a towel under his head and then Jeff like it just looks like Jeff is like I gotta help my man Boston Rob right now yeah the way that scene is shot is so corny but also very cinematic because it does the cameraman Falls which simulates Rob falling and all that but it was it stands out in a negative way something that stands out in a positive way is during the Sumo challenge which is like

34:49 The challenge the heroes dominate from top to bottom yeah they go slow-mo on Coach versus rert the second time after coach you know does his whole thing I love that even though such a blowout that challenge is probably my favorite challenge of this en of the entire season so good and I think it's and I think it's because of the matchups that we get and watching it this time I forgot that Boston Ral went up against Colby I'm like oh how does Jeff feel about this yeah but every single time and then you know James they're telling Randy like hey Play Dirty against James and then he tries to like go high and James just immediately yeah I'm done I don't know how that matchup happened how they figured out that I think they're I think they're like okay well we don't think it'll get to this necessarily or like they were like okay let's go more even with everybody else I don't know I think that's probably what they were thinking but I don't know of sports losing to Amanda for Real come on now yeah doing that the captain of sports is not very sportsy through her two seasons she wins her first individual immunity this season and because parvy was like hey do you want it

36:09 So the captain of sports is kind of a let down when it comes to the physical aspect of the game not that matters but to Amanda I mean Amanda's tall I don't know I'm really trying to give you know there I agree JT's screaming at someone to get low on oh he's screaming at rert to get L on Coach because he's taller than him so like I yeah I understand it's just I'm just trying to I don't hate Amanda it seems like you might not like Amanda but I don't oh my goodness I think she's so overrated interesting I mean she's on this season so you can talk about her in this season I don't think she's that brilliant as people think she is I really I really don't I think she plays with other people that are brilliant and she's there and I also she's kind of boring her confessionals are boring there's no wiliness to them and people can disagree with me that's totally fine but I just I never got it I never got it with her I thought she was always kind of boring but that's just my opinion I didn't I didn't she didn't have that spark in the confessionals the passion the energy it was just all kind of like ah you know Barry CGI
