The Amazing Race 33: Episode 6 Recap

0:00 We've got the tnt takes for you on the amazing race episode six here michelle welcome back to the podcast how have you been it's been a whole week since we've last spoken it's a whole week and a whole week of starting kindergarten children at school so yes if you didn't know i'm a kindergarten teacher and oh they're very cute but they don't listen yet so yeah it's been a hard tough week i'll try to go easy on you tonight i know i can be a big kid sometimes myself and i don't want to give you any work here on the podcast i'll try and not go too wild so that you don't have to keep me in control and under control on the podcast okay that would be good i know it's also a big week for you because you do run the fan page on australian survivor and for those who are not aware australian survivor has just premiered this week as well so obviously with that running two fan pages at the same time and i think being an admin on a third one as well would have kept you pretty busy over the last week oh very busy i mean we have the episode threads that go up each night so they're very busy but i have been adding members left right and center and majority currently are americans they've all discovered australian survivor and they are just going crazy

2:41 Part of the challenge sorry it's been a long week on mine as well the amazing race too many shows i do and you know what i'm so terrible with names as well i keep getting it mixed up i promise you i'm not going to call dusty rusty this time around it is dusty it is dusty i practiced this whole week saying dusty not rusty but anyways we get into this episode here for the amazing race and obviously we for the first time here see them use the plane that is specifically there for them in the amazing race which is going to be separate to what we're used to seeing where they get into commercial planes this is going to be a private charter that they have to go to france which is going to be the next location how excited were you to see france come up here as one of the locations that they were going to go to and were you a bit surprised because i mean france been hit pretty bad by the pandemic i was quite surprised to see them actually go to france in the first place i think because they went to a really remote sort of country townish sort of place that they must have scoped it out and that it was it was pretty covered safe then they wouldn't have gone to somewhere like paris like that would have just the whole the whole production would have come down with cloven in one like one hour but i love it when they go to go to france because

4:01 You know you know if french people don't want to speak english they won't speak english with you and so it provides another little extra added bit of tension in the race sometimes yeah marcus welcome to the live stream good evening to you marcus was in the stream earlier as well always great to have you in the live now michelle one of the interesting things for me we spoke a little bit about one of the things and that i thought was going to be the case for most of the season is that you know you need do you need to have a sense of being able to navigate yourself from point a to point b drive around in between detours and road blocks and things like that and that is the thing that has really made aruna natalia struggle they do not have any sense of direction they don't know how to get from point a to point b they'll create point a 1.1 point a 1.2 and as many additional detours for themselves as possible to get from a to b before they get there but in this specific leg we do see that they actually get driven from the airport or wherever they are to whatever locations they need to go so that was something that was eliminated for them here this episode how much of a role do you think this played in aruna natalya actually being a lot better here in this specific league huge role i think because you know they came back up from you know

5:22 Way down and i think it was just the best thing for them because it just took the stress off them that they could concentrate on the challenges and doing their best in the challenges not being stressed running out of the car being late yeah i think i think it really helped them and i think that for a team like them they're not bad at doing the actual challenges one of the things i would have really wanted to know is that they have to do a speed bump that we're not aware of because the amazing race has been they've been cutting out so many bits of footage this season that we haven't seen from episode one where we didn't see the detour i believe it was or the roadblock we didn't see the road block in episode one there's been speed bumps we haven't seen i'd really want to know if they had a speed bump and if they were actually that fast that they just blitzed for even the speed bump to catch up and it became not so important as to the edit of the show but from what we see in any case in this episode it didn't look like that was something that came up something else i haven't seen any photos or anything of one however they do have a little chat about each episode after it airs i don't know whether this has gone up yet i'm sure they would have spoken about it if there was one quite surprised that the amazing race is allowing racers to

6:42 Have these chats because i remember a couple of seasons ago a team that i shall not name because i speak about them too often on this podcast had their own little review thing that they did and then they were told not to do it and they had to stop in the season so clearly they've loosened up a little bit when it comes to the teams here being able to give us a little bit of additional insights of what happened on some of these leagues and i think they need to have loosened that up just for the holiness because they can talk about it on you know whose platform that they have and so if they do it for one team they have to do it for the other team they just would have tightened up the rules of what they're allowed to talk about i suppose which is fair you know i mean obviously nobody wants to get spoiled this season and that's fair that they that they're doing it i'm really enjoying the additional bits of insight that these teams are giving us i know that quite a few of them have got their own little podcast or recap of what happened each episode speaking of the holdernesses kim had a very interesting outlook on this leg she said that she was going to come in and be a different kim a more positive kim and i didn't understand where it came from because i haven't seen her be this negative person that is overreacting to things up until this point i wonder how much the edit on purpose didn't show some of that for us maybe in the early episodes because this is a team that we need to get behind but she doesn't come across

8:02 As someone that's negative so it was quite surprising to me when i heard her say that yeah i agree i was trying to think maybe she's negative behind the scenes maybe she's negative back in the hotel room when they get there or maybe not so much on the race but yes they could be editing them in a good light because they're good people anyway i can't see her being ultra negative but you know there's some people who are happy-go-lucky people and all of a sudden if they do the littlest thing negative they think oh this is really bad i want to be back to my normal self so maybe she is one of those kind of people definitely no how i don't know if you had this but i definitely had a bit of a flashback of the previous episode when they got to their first clue and they had to climb this massive staircase to get all the way up to the top to get their next clue what is it with europe and all these bloody staircases that people have got to go up to get these clues like it's like is nothing flat over there like i've been on the north island of new zealand for far too long everything's flat up here well no there's lots of mountains i mean you have your mountains in the south island if they came to australia really hard to get stairs but it's funny though because on the amazing race fan page people regularly put up you know photos of things that could possibly be a challenge

9:22 Or ideas and sometimes there's things with a lot of stairs i think i put up one once with a huge amount of circular stairs to get all the way to the top and i'm like oh bertram what about this one so yeah i think these stair ones are good because it just kills everybody yeah like i mean if this is going to be what the amazing i mean i know that in the amazing race you've got to be fit but there's being fit running and like flat surfaces and then there's running up staircases or walking up staircases and i think the elevation in this season has been a lot for teams probably to deal with but it does make for some stunning scenery i thought that i don't know what you call that house that was on the top of the hill very ancient looking but it was really nice and i was thinking is it a castle i've got actually a castle here with a question mark yeah very strange we should have asked felipe he might have been able to give us a little bit of an insight as to what that is yes you know what i always thought corsica was italian i have no idea why i thought that but when they said france i'm like france bringing france really and i believed all my life it was italian you were closer than me because when they first mentioned that i thought it was portugal

10:43 I had portugal written down and i was like oh no actually it's france so i had to like change that as was making my notes about this leg but yeah so i mean we both had it kind of wrong coming into this episode but quite interesting here is that the teams don't really change leads for the early part here lulu and lala stay up front here with ryan and dusty and they go to this first detour that they have to go and do you know how hard i to work at pronouncing that correctly but they go to this first detour and they need to compete and there's two challenges ahead of them one of it is to make cheese i wrote it down for marsh i believe it was called like shows you how is uncultured in french there you go i was just gonna say that shows you how uncultured that i am because i was like never heard of that before yeah actually you think it was a ricotta or a kind of ricotta because someone mentioned ricotta so and cheese like that like ricotta cheese goes through what is it that cloth like a muslin cloth so it could have been like a ricotta cheese if it wasn't a ricotta cheese let's pretend i know what you're talking about like i was completely in the dark if i if i read this whole thing and i'd be like i need to go do some make some fancy

12:03 Cheese there would have been not a single moment of hesitation for me to choose the other roadblock i know that you know oh so detour i know that with mules i know that with mules that you don't know how they're going to react to you and mules are stubborn for a reason but really smoking does that not ring a bell yeah but the thing for me is here's the thing michelle let me tell you why i would choose that i grew up with like an a granddad a grandmother and uncles who are all farm people so i was on the farm every holiday when i was growing up at school so i'm used to being around livestock i understand how they operate there is this thing that when you're dealing and i'm not like i'm gonna be honest i've never had to deal with a mule before like a donkey or anything like that and i know that could be different but you know i've had to deal with a lot of horses and things like that and livestock on the farm and there is a way that the energy that you have when you're dealing with livestock really translates through to how the animal reacts to you and i feel like i'm pretty good with animals in general and they respond well to me so i think i would have been confident in my ability to go do that opposed to the other thing unless i was with someone who was a chef or they just knew what they were doing i mean poor ryan here listening to dusty the expert on how to make cheese and then he just completely cooks it

13:23 This whole episode and cook it in a bad way for those that are not australian he just does not know what he's doing he's talking himself up in his own skills here but i mean if i was his partner i would have been like okay you sound like you know what you're doing yeah exactly and yeah they failed miserably so i just i just couldn't believe it when they didn't do it and lulu and lala left and they were still there and i'm like what went wrong because you knew you knew what you were doing apparently but the whole mule thing don't you think the mules would be stressed when they're trying to put all the bits and pieces on and they're stressed they'd be feeling that stress now if they just had to walk up to them and say come here and then walk down the path i think it might be different but i know i would probably stress the mule out but it was interesting because i don't feel like anybody struggled with these mules i don't know what it was if they were given some sedative beforehand or they were just in a really good mood you know before like maybe mules in france are completely different you know they're as laid back as people in french are in general and that just translates through to the animals i don't know but they that was not the hardest part of this challenge the hardest part of this specific challenge for them was to get the saddle on them to be able to put the whatever the milk or whatever they had to transport

14:43 On top of it and getting the finer attention to detail right i think was the biggest challenge on this and it was also what made raquel and kayla struggle in the beginning when it came to but the holdernesses came from behind and just shot past both lulu and lala and ryan and dusty here without any issues so it showed that was definitely the quicker thing to do in it and when they explained it saying you have to go un over uneven terrain and if you spill milk it's not a good thing i thought by that explanation it would be a lot harder than what it was i know it looked really easy in the end i mean once you get the harness on and you've got that correct i mean it looked really easy because there were no problems with the mules no one dropped anything and it was it seemed to be fairly quick and i enjoyed that they actually had to come down to where the cheese people were because then the cheese people were stressed out seeing that they had finished whereas in a lot of detours they're in different areas they don't see you know where the placings are and this actually made ryan and dusty stress out so much that they decided to change well dusty wanted to change a couple of minutes into it like he was that confident yeah right at the beginning i'm like you can't swap now but come on if you're going to swap do it now and then they swap so far into the cheese

16:03 Making yeah like listen this was a dusty and ryan heavy episode so i mean them going into this absolutely messing this whole thing up specifically dusty switching the heat on and off and trying to keep it in between a certain temperature and it was amazing to me that he couldn't figure out when other people were telling them like listen we're just we're just hitting this heat and we're keeping it there he couldn't put two and two together maybe listen i shouldn't be turning this little gas stove off every single time and maybe that's the thing that's messing it up and it does show you probably michelle that if you out there and you're competing like this you're probably getting like tunnel vision where you just don't take other information on you're just like so stressed and so hyper focused on the task yeah they were just they were so they just wanted to get it done and they thought they could finish it and then every time they tried to finish it didn't work and so it's like do you leave do you stay are we going to work this out and they just yeah they just lost the plot and left i was so surprised they left so late i was shocked that after everybody left that was the thing that made them decide okay now we need to switch it up because that to me would have been petrifying like if i've just spent 40 minutes doing

17:23 This thing and i'm like going to something that is unknown to me i don't know how long that's going to take i don't know what's involved in the whole thing until i get there i would have been petrified switching it up i think that if they made that move earlier they probably would have been in a better place than what they ended up being in at the end but things turned out the way it did the lead completely changed here with kim and payne leaving first i believe for a kill and actually it was lulula was still in second place leaving there and then raquel yeah and kayla was after that and then also akbar and sheree and also aruna natalia everybody left there before them which i was completely shocked by and i will have to admit you know what because while all of this is happening we're already seeing what the next challenge is we all really know what the roadblock is and some of the people were like halfway through their roadblock at that time i was really worried for them and if they could actually make that time up especially knowing straight after the roadblock we had the pit stop comment coming up as well and usually those kinds of roadblocks are pretty linear you don't have the chance to pass anybody so i'm surprised what happened later on in that roadblock because normally physical things like that which you know you follow a course you just can't usually pass people but let's be honest

18:43 Ryan is on another level the guy got there went straight into beast mode and just he like he was talking to his guide and he's like mate just keep up you know he's like i'm gonna run you gotta keep up the poor guy the poor cameraman whoever else was with him they must have thought jesus he's just gonna go now and i'm gonna keep up i mean those cameramen are fit anyway but when they're put with someone like ryan and you know dusty guy's like an athlete like he's a proper athlete like i looked at it and i'm like i looked at the guide and i was like mate you did not you've done probably a lot of these types of guides in your life but you did not train for this you are unprepared like because he did not look in shape the way ryan did going into that run mind you if i was in last place like him i would have given it my all and if i knew someone like akbar was ahead of me i probably would have passed that back to yeah i mean impressive showing here by ryan like really i feel like running through the whole thing jumping in there passing obviously akbar in this specific race and akbar made a really big rookie mistake going into this specific roadblock in the sense that he didn't have running shoes on he had the wrong shoes it makes a huge difference when you're out there

20:03 And you need to move like i mean why hasn't he got running shoes on yeah it was crazy and also his pants like he had some sort of what did he call it he had some sort of like heat pans to keep the heat and thermal top yeah but why the shoes why have you even got those shoes on the race just like completely unprepared i mean in the sense that if you're going to go for a run at least half or be prepared that you may have to run and have shorts on underneath your pants or something like that like ryan did in the previous episode where he said i got to get rid of the short like my pants so i can be my shorts i just felt like he was unprepared for it and i think a lot of people will watch this episode michelle and they would be thinking to himself karma because he completely gassed out in this section and his fitness let him down when he's been pretty hard on shari this whole season in regards to it and it's ironic that he ends up being the one that costs them this position in the game and it is all about cardiovascular fitness that is required to be able to get through this course and you know several times you'd see him stumble and you know lose his balance and go up towards a rock and i'm thinking oh my god he looks drunk but he's you know it's just it's so he's so unsteady and he's so exhausted that

21:24 You know staying upright is like such a hard thing for him let alone doing the canyoning part yeah i think that you know it's a lot harder than what we can appreciate here sitting at home and i'm sure oh definitely it is it's so hard and it's relentless it's day after day and they're so tired and they've just got to get up again and i equate that amount of times with when you have a newborn and you still have to get up and you still have to do things so this is what the tightness that i'm thinking they have all the time and it's so hard you're in a you're in a fog yeah 100 now on this specific one of the people that we yeah we kind of mentioned aruna natalia as a team that sort of came from behind did really well on the challenges and a big part of this the mvp for that team this specific episode is arun because who knew he had it in him he was running most of it as well he's a pretty fit guy he's a dad if you think about it and he was really putting in a massive effort there to get past someone like akbar when he came from behind to do really well in this specific episode so well done to arun for absolutely beasting through it probably the second fastest from what we could see doing a lot of running i don't think i saw anybody else running i don't know he was like i want to stay in this for my daughter you know i've got to

22:44 Do this and you know they're massive fans and i was so happy that they didn't go out i watched it last night i was so happy because it was just there's such a nice team not that they're not all nice teams but i just i really like them and they try hard and yeah until they have to drive themselves again and then they're probably out now let's talk about the shadiness again we had some shadiness here on this specific episode that came in if you're going to talk about what i think you're going to talk about i don't think it's shadiness are you talking about lulula and raquel and kayla listen all's fear and love and war falls fearless and i understand like if i was out there it's every man for himself but yes it is quite interesting because they did say before they went into this we're going to work together we want both teams to do really well and i saw two times where there was shadiness happening maybe three times from that specific team yep i was hyper focused on this episode and then i'll agree to disagree on that yeah i'll talk about them yeah so i saw twice where i thought they weren't being the best of alliance members potentially to

24:04 Lulu and lala once again understand this is a race for a million dollars you're out there if that team is going to be naive enough to help you and show you where the clue is like i believe lulu did in this specific episode then take the clue get the hell out of dodge and focus on getting to the end i get it right still a little bit shady like you know like shade level maybe not that high but still they said they were going to work together through this thing and i think lulu has become a bit more awoken to how competitive raquel and kayla is as a pair they're very competitive and i don't blame them like if i was there i still want to win as well but i think that lulu and lala is going to treat them differently for the rest of the race and they will be kind to them but i think that they are not going to as freely share information moving forward so i think potentially a rookie mistake here by them but potentially not i can see both sides to this argument yeah so can i mean lulu and lala you know they're very look everyone's nice they're just more trusting i think they want to believe in an alliance they think you know if i give you something you give something back they're very much tit for tat they want to work together now when they were canyoning and they saw

25:24 The clue no matter who i'm in an alliance with if someone's behind me i will not yell back and say all the clues here i will take the clue let them find it if they don't find it i would and at the end they say oh where was the clue i would say something like oh i thought you would have seen it was right next to us when we came around the block which is true and then it doesn't put you in a bad position and you're not deliberately helping out another team now if you're doing something together like coding or puzzles fine you're side by side you're together you can't really get away with not helping but something like that they didn't have to say oh the clue's here and then they were a bit angry that the other team that they passed them but if you're going to give up a clue like that then don't be disappointed if someone else is going to pass you so yeah that's the only thing i was really picking up but you picked up a couple more yeah so second time that they were being a bit shady was when it came to the next part of the i guess on the way to the pit stop when they had to get out of the car you see raquel

26:45 And kayla reading the clue properly knowing that they have to leave their bags and everything there and they did not help lulu and lala when lulu and lala came all the way down with their bags on them putting it down starting to inflate the raft that they needed to use to get to the pit stop in fact they left before lulula even figured it out and had to go back and they lost some very precious time there and i do ask you this i understand that listen it's a competition but these guys knew that they were in second and third at that point like they knew they were teams behind them why go to that level with a team that you potentially want to work with for the rest of the race it's not the it's not the final leg and at the end of the day the final league is the thing that counts here and lulula isn't the biggest threat to raquel and kayla for the end of this game i don't think if you put lulu and lala and raquel and kayla next to each other i think that they're very evenly matched and i would probably tip it to raquel and kayla actually to beat them you know so that was the second thing that i picked up here i think in that instance if we were second and third i would tell them what you've got your bags put them away if we are fourth and fifth i wouldn't have yeah then that's fair anything can happen on the boat ride you know all of a sudden the last team can come up and overtake or you might get a hole

28:05 In the boat anything can happen so yes second and third i tell them anything later i wouldn't even if i was in a close alliance with them because you know it's all about staying in the race and i don't think that's shady but you just want to you know preserve yourself shady at the instance of second and third and listen i'm not i'm not trying to be mother teresa here and saying bad kayla like i'm just saying they are not the most trustworthy of alliance members they're clearly there for themselves they're playing a very cutthroat game and then lastly the last bit of shade that they did here in this episode was to the boys which they've done a few times when the boys took off their shirts at the end and they say oh they just want to show their muscles they clearly have got to be in their bonnet when it comes to the boys yeah and i think that a lot of what we saw at the end there with dusty completely acting out as he got there and just being on something like i mean i guess it's like acting like the hulk get my shirt off yeah i only get like that when it's cheat day and i can have kfc but outside of that i'm normally pretty composed michelle [Music] yeah that was funny and i missed the there was

29:25 A look from the greeter and i missed the look from the greater i have to actually go back and have a look but yeah that was that was funny and oh and but when phil when raquel and kayla got to the pit stop i'm just jumping forward phil said there you go you got here and he just sounded so australian when he said that he didn't even sound new zealander he went there you go and he just it was so aussie and i was like yes it's funny how that happens because i mean i don't think he's been in new zealand or you know definitely not australian for many years so it's funny that he still has that in him and he's got those little mannerisms and things that you've picked up i did not pick that up at all it might because i'm not a native that i didn't sort of pick that up at all but it was an exciting sort of end here to the race with the kayaks because i was really nervous when i heard okay the next one's the pit stop like how do the guys come back and because i did not i was like i was finding myself and like i was saying last week i wanted to win but then this episode because they became the underdog so i was like i don't want the boys to go i want the voice to still stay in it and i wanted to be because otherwise it's not the rest of the season for me is going to be boring because i'll just know kim and bean's going to win like i know that kim and pen is the favorites at this point in my mind they need competition there needs to be some rivalry

30:45 To the end because if kim and pete is running this with raquel and kayla and they're running it with lulu and lala at the end or even natalia they're definitely winning this thing so it would have taken the mystery out of the rest of the season so for the betterment of the season i want them to stay in there until the final leg so that we as an audience going into that final don't know who's going to win between these two teams because that's the only two teams that make sense to me at this point i don't know about you unless something really bad happens to them you know on the way to the final pit stop and someone else goes in front of them i mean something drastic would have to happen to one of those two teams definitely i don't think it's going to happen like lightning is probably not going to strike twice like even if one of them goes out in a very strange way then i think the other one will pull through and we'll do it but i mean who knows stranger things has happened obviously on seasons but i just don't see it going that way i think one of those two teams i can win it i'll be more than happy to be wrong when we get to the end and we have a lulu and la win or someone else that surprises us aruna natalia win what would the fans say if arun and natalya were to win this season after being kept in the show for as long as they have [Music] you know what because they came back and they were already eliminated there would be a

32:05 Faction of people that would say oh it's not fair they were already out but it's not as though they ran the race ran any legs without them so i don't think they'd be they'd be hated in that way but they're such a likable team i don't think there'd be a fan revolt at all yeah but yeah it would be an interesting win they might be the luckiest team if they were to win this season based on that definitely and i think next week's going to be your hated thing of a non-elimination leg anyway that's got to be coming do you think that if ryan and dusty were to finish last year putting my tinfoil hat on for a second do you think that phil in there may have just decided let's keep them in the game here because we need this competitive team in the rest of the show what do you think would have happened here or do you think it's pretty set in stone they don't move those types only because they have a certain amount of things for the roadblocks and the and the detours they have a certain number set up for different places and they have to ring ahead and do all that oh if amy and mike can win anybody can win the amazing

33:26 Race hey no emmy and mine were fantastic josh and brent weren't too bad yeah i definitely think that yeah you go ahead michelle i think they'd be okay but i guess it when it comes to like i hear what you're saying it's definitely they try to keep the show as good as they can there's certain reasons they probably pre-book in advance how many people can do a certain activity or challenge on the show so it doesn't make sense that they suddenly are now we've got to book an extra ticket to go up the mountain and do a bungee or something like that in advance when it comes to keeping people in the game so i don't think they would have changed that they've always said they have the three non in a normal season the three non-elimination legs are set in stone and they don't change them much to you know the conspiracy brigade who say oh they love that team they kept them in because they want them yeah now what did you think of this last activity i'm always a big fan of the kayak section where they've got to get in the water and actually make their way through to the pit stop because sometimes that can be a game changer in itself people can change leads and things can change quite a bit it can be quite a shake up and it's quite funny to see who actually

34:46 Is good at you know rowing and being in the water and can pull it down because it's not a skill that you're born with like you either have it or you don't have it some people are very uncoordinated like lulu and lala i'm surprised they even got there in the end well you need someone who actually at least one of you knows what you're doing and if the second one knows half as much then you're okay i got in a rowboat with my ten-year-old daughter it wasn't good for the first few minutes until she picked it up but definitely better we were definitely better than some of these teams so yeah she obviously my daughter obviously has it in her and these guys don't because we after the first little while you sort of she was watching what side i was doing and how many times i was doing and she was keeping pace and that's what you have to do otherwise you're going around in circles and also i mean the other thing was i don't know if you sort of noticed this but the boats that they were using the kayaks as they called it didn't look like the most economical like for being in the water it's not your traditional kayaks that look like they're very easy to row as well like i thought you guys are giving them something that looks very entry-level i don't know if it's even meant to be on rivers going upstream to be honest so i don't think they made it easy on these teams either
