The Amazing Race 35: Episode 1 Review

1:21 Yet so I hope everything is okay because it's very unlike her not to message me back I will keep an eye on my DMs just in case she does end up showing up later on the live and jumping in but for now it will be me with the live audience tonight as we go through everything that happened on the premiere episode and let's say hello to a few people here in the live we've got Oreo saying I haven't watched it yet I do maybe plan on just coming in to say hello before we start or if you see this later on after you've watched it thank you for dropping by always brings a smile to my face when I see familiar names popping up in the live Andrea Lee coming in hot with the five New Zealand dollars right off the bat saying The Amazing Race rival season were full Cogan and Jeff probes on the same The Amazing Race team full kogan for those who don't know and I'm sure most people that check out live podcasts they're always very well aware of the backstory but full kogan very nearly became the Survivor host and was the Preferred Choice before Jeff Probst actually got that job so I'm sure Phil would love to get it back in on him but if you could choose in the audience to be the host of Survivor or be the Amazing Race host which host would you rather be for me personally I reckon I'd love to be the Amazing Race host because you get to travel around the world and see different things in different places which I think would be so

2:42 Awesome to do with Jeff Probst ends up going back to Fiji every year but it does look like he loves going back to Fiji Andre is saying Amanda and Chris for another return Season so they can make The Amazing Race history by being the first team to get eliminated three times in a row and Michael and mo as well calling some shots here early on Andre and due to Survivor 45 first episode I'm now waiting for the Amazing Race team to officially quit the first leg of The Amazing Race I Feel Like The Amazing Race the casting is a little bit tighter I don't feel like someone will slip in like that's just gonna quit in the first leg and how difficult can it really be on The Amazing Race let's be honest come on lovable Nikki welcome back to the live saying we're back baby yes we are kiwi skirt to send the chat hello kiwi same here hoping that Michelle is doing fine hopefully she jumps on at some stage what we're doing the live here tonight lovable Nikki says that she would rather be the Amazing Race host Sandy's saying I still don't know how to watch the episodes not from USA and paranormal Plus have it available in my country but I'm gonna find a way I can't be seen as openly showing you a direction and where to go Sandy but there are some great Facebook pages if you can find certain Facebook groups that maybe are fan related I'm sure if you ask him there they'll be able

4:02 To point you in the right direction because there are places that you can definitely get the episodes but let's get on to the episode here let's talk a little bit about the Amazing Race 35 I came into the season completely oblivious to who these people were going to be I did zero preparation on the cast coming into this because I've been super busy like those that have been following the channel for a long time they've probably been getting a lot of notifications popping up over the last couple of days and weeks because we've been covering so many shows so I didn't even have any time and I personally love going into a season not knowing too much about people and then making up my mind about these players when I actually see them on my screen that is how I actually like to consume my content I know some people love getting lost in the source and they do analysis based on the person being a former pilot they probably know how to navigate really well when they get a map and they'll know how to use a compass and then the person gets out there and they're a complete dud you know we had a few times where that's happened in the past so I don't read too much in the preseason when it comes to these people and who they are but I just went into this cold turkey I didn't even know what the twists were going to be or what the theme was going to be coming into the season but we find out a couple of things here I believe for the first time ever we've got 13 teams on

5:22 This season we've got the Utah now in the season which is going to be mandatory which I'm loving because of the u-turns mandatory people can't be the nice people out there they have to do a vote on the U-turn and B put in a situation where they've got to you know potentially make some enemies I like that I like that it's mandatory I don't know how you feel in the live about that and they're taking it back to old school because we're also going back to airports this season which I don't know about you but I've been missing them going into the airports trying to find the best flight it's not completely old school because back in the day when the first season started there was a lot more choice for them to get onto different flights and they weren't limited and like you get the best or the second or the third best fight so it does seem like it's still a little bit directed to try and keep teams as much together as possible but it's a move in the right direction and for those that are not aware they're also formed season 35 I believe as season 36 originally and then they found out that they were going to be 90 episode 90 minute episodes maybe they went into 36 knowing that so they made some of these extra changes like the extra team you know u-turns coming in all these extra things that we now have extra time for the for the show to actually explain as well so I'm excited to sort of see how

6:42 That's going to play out for the season as a whole let's have a look here at what people are saying yeah definitely go check that out Sandy go check out some of that on Facebook do you know welcome to the live good to have you here as well good afternoon to you as well sir lovable Nicky saying I'm hella excited about the airports I think going to travel agencies is back and play as well so that's going to be good like because that's the kind of like flexibility that they had in the schedule back in the day where they could get a better travel agency that would give them a better route than other people and if you traveled a lot and if you had that Savvy about you could figure things out so I'm liking seeing that come back kiwis good saying yeah I like the old well first in first serve and if you could find a better flight good on you that's what I'm talking about Danica's saying too early I'm here but my husband is in the car for another 15 minutes orange face frowning and then I'll be driving I hope you're still on by the time I drop off my daughter at work well we're definitely going to be here probably for at least an hour so you know tune back in whenever you can and have some fun with us as we talk about the premiere episode for The Amazing Race but those are all things that I liked and then one of the big things that Phil also said to her in the beginning of the episode which stood out to me was the fact that there again is going to be no non-illumination

8:02 Legs and lovable Nikki knows better than anyone else how much I hate a no result episode because lovable Nicki's been here with us from the start when we spoke about Amazing Race and I hate non-elimination links so not having a non-elimination leg this season even though sometimes it may mean that you lose the team that you're shouting for the most I'm okay with that I'm okay with it being results based you have to get there and then can move on to the next one if you're in time so I don't know how everybody else feels about that but that to me means that there is more consequences heading into the season now I did want to bring up the teams here because at some point I'm definitely going to be looking at this because I am horrible with names when it comes to it I'm very bad with new names and especially when the new teams come into play like they have done this season it's going to take me two or three episodes to remember the names and put them together with who they are when they're out there and normally I have Michelle here to help you with that but I don't have that so I'm gonna have to like fly solo and try and remember as many of these names as I can so let's have a look here [Music] Sandy's saying the only thing I'm kind of different about is the season is there is no non-elimination leak so when one team got very lost and got behind it's going to be predictable

9:23 Yeah we'll have a few the race continue legs okay yeah so it's like a mega League like they did last season they did the mega leagues Michelle thought it was in 30 minutes so she's gonna probably be in on about 10 minutes she wouldn't have missed too much I would have just basically set the stage with everyone here and she can just come in and then hopefully add some additional spice to the podcast as well so you said that you don't like the non-elimination legs because it may become predictable it's also bad because if they get like the worst or the wrong taxi at the wrong point in the in the game you know like so many times great teams have been able to navigate really well solo on their own and they get through the challenges and then something happens that's out of their control like for instance their Taxi Driver doesn't know where they're going they get a flat wheel the engine breaks down and they're somewhere in a third world country where they can't immediately get a replacement for their vehicle those are the kind of situations where you feel bad for a team if they go out on an elimination leg and it was kind of like out of their control like so I get that there you go Michelle's on their way lovable Nikki so happy just that she's okay firstly so it must have been like a cross Crosswire in our communication not great for

10:43 Our communication if it to be an amazing race team out there that's what makes the Amazing Race spicy yep I can't like my knowledge and when it comes to names of past Seasons like I can't remember every single team but I remember there was this like one team one season and they were like out in the movie is somewhere driving in the desert and they rolled their vehicle and they were like one of the top teams that season I believe it was like two guys blondish brown kind of hair and they were eliminated you know because they couldn't get to the end pit stop so just one specific bad move or bad luck situation could really put you in a bad situation where you just can't finish the leg but these are the teams that came into the episode and I'm sort of wondering in the live let me know which teams popped for you which teams were the teams that for you really stood out in this opening episode as we got to know a little bit more about them I'm really curious about that for me personally you gotta love these two right you gotta love Andrea and Melania Milena they just pop on the screen big time like and they were not only were they entertaining they shocked me in their performance throughout this episode as well because they were constantly hitting with the top teams

12:03 Even heading right until the end they were doing extremely well so I'm expecting a lot from them this season looking at more teams here that sort of stood out for me I really liked the father and the son I think there are going to be a Powerhouse team and a lot of the editor in the opening stages of the game sort of spoke about how maybe the dad's going to be underestimated how a lot of people when they've got like a person who's deaf then they've got a person who is with them they're kind of helping them through situations but Rob the dad seems to be a lot more independent and I think that's going to come in very powerful I mean right in the beginning of this episode you have I was very impressed with how quickly Rob was able to decipher the code at the first roadblock or not was it roadblock that they went into when they went to the Millennium Stadium they had to go over the titrope yeah it was a roadblock had to go over the Thai Trope and then they had to decipher the code so Rob immediately being confident saying hey I'll take the pressure of Corey in this situation I'll go into it I'll go solve this and at that point when he was solving it they were like 10 or 11 teams all huddled together they were trying to figure out that puzzle

13:24 And he just went in there couldn't hear them so that's a great excuse that they were like well we all said we were going to work together you could just say well I didn't hear that so he's got plausible deniability as well and he was able to solve that really quickly get out of there and move on so I think this is a team that I will look out for as well let me just quickly reply to Michelle here while everybody in there live let me know who your teams are that you're shouting for sorry about that I'm just letting you know that she can come on when she whenever she's ready let's have a look here at the live we will have a few the race continued legs I've seen that I think there's going to be only one keep on racing leg they didn't explain that so I'm not sure identical says agree with getting rid of the charters but still glad that they did it to keep the show going during cover travel I agree 100 Andrew Lee is saying that Todd and Ashley looking to be hilarious fan fave combo Todd and Ashley Todd and Ashley this is where my memory is completely failing me right now all right here we go Todd Ashley yes 100 they definitely they definitely stood out they definitely stood out

14:44 In this episode I couldn't help but just feel like you know this is the problem like you watch all of these shows at the same time you're gonna compare it and I couldn't help but feel like comparing the two tasks between Survivor 45 and The Amazing Race in this first episode that you're kind of leaning a little bit towards the Amazing Race having the better cast out of the two shows it's still early days still could go very badly for The Amazing Race and very good for Survivor but there was a lot of things that stood out I mean right at the beginning at the mat as they are standing on this mountain by the Hollywood Sign looking at Los Angeles Todd you know has this thing where he says we're going to be competitive and Ashley is like we'll do our best so you can already tell that they're gonna be a combo that there is going to be some friction the fact that they've had some friction before in their relationship and that got all revealed on the Amazing Race show and that maybe they don't always operate at the same frequency I think the more stress you're going to put on this couple the more they're going to unravel and we'll talk a bit about Todd later on because you know he's putting a lot of pressure on Ashley to do better but he's the one that kind of makes a mistake this episode right so we'll talk a bit about that it's an innocent mistake but still

16:04 Lovable Nikki says yes I like the Father and Son the sisters and the father and daughter the sisters are really good as well like and this is what I'm saying I feel like there are so many good teams that just popped I'm assuming you're talking about Morgan and Lena who ended up getting the they ended up getting the express pass right so that means that moving forward they can skip a task definitely a strong leg for them as well still ending up somewhere in the top four even after getting that Express Pass which was really cool to see Danica's saying I haven't decided if I like it unsolated wasn't over until 11 for me Thursday is the same with the buddy games big brother and the challenge another long night yeah that's a lot of shows to watch Danica and I started watching Big Brother this season I couldn't keep up with it I had too much going on and then buddy games I know that Kahuna has kind of got his eye on that and he seems really intrigued by it so there's a lot of TV shows at the moment going on and release saying Elizabeth and lyanna looks like a strong Underdog team we may have a look at that is that the mother yeah the mother and daughter I kind of like them as well and this is where I need Michelle on because

17:25 When I saw this team play throughout this whole episode I was constantly thinking of Michelle and her daughter because I know like Michelle really wants to do the Amazing Race she really wants to participate in The Amazing Race Australia she's applied in the past and she's applied with I think one of her friends quite a few times and they haven't made it onto the show so maybe now that her daughter I believe has just graduated high school which is a really big achievement her daughter's getting to that age where maybe she can do it with her so I was going to ask Michelle about that so maybe when she gets back on I'll bring that back up lovable Nicky saying come up with the commercials so I watched the next day glad TNT live is on Fridays yeah we've got to try and like fit it in and we're always a little bit behind as well because we get it a day later than the us as well Andrea Lee saying hilarious mistake lovable link he says I like almost everyone so it will be difficult to pick teams for the season for me yeah it's a very likable cast and they've been doing a pretty good do a pretty good job at casting I feel like on The Amazing Race in the last couple of Seasons so it's a strong start for me on that front but let's look a little bit at sort of the opening like I said here we started in Los Angeles we had the Hollywood Sign where

18:46 They started they had this look at Los Angeles and California and they had to find their way to a hotel I believe was like the millennial Millennium Hotel and immediately here you can see as they're traveling from one point to the other point Who's going to be good at navigation you've got believe it was Joe and Ian who are both sort of struggling to get their way there that they've got different communication styles and that's going to be interesting in regards to that and how that's going to work it seems like it's going to be a bit of friction there as well and as I'm saying that Michelle's just telling me so he's got really big internet issues so I'm not sure if she's going to make it on but let's see I will continue if needed saying I know that I'm going to continue to push on even if she can't make it but yeah they have to find their way to the first roadblock the first rope block is an exciting one Joe Ian and Greg and John who are the brothers those are the ones that had the yellow clothes and they're another one that kind of popped out like there were so many teams that were really cool actually they sort of get there first and I will say this Greg and John

20:06 They had a really strong start here Greg's the one who ended up doing the roadblock and they had to he had to go from the one side to the other side on the tightrope and then get the lettuce unscrambled and he got City of Angels pretty quickly put two and two together with Los Angeles and got to meet the champions from last season and Derek and Claire which I thought was a pretty cool moment I know that there are some shows where they kind of lean into the star power of the people that have come before but the Amazing Race I don't feel like they've always done it I know that there was one season as well where they had like previous teams as a part of a roadblock in America but I like it whenever they bring back previous teams like that and obviously having someone like Derek and Claire out there who've just won who was so likable I thought that was a cool moment that they were handing out the clues saying you need to give them a proper directions okay South East and not left I'm so happy I'm not that bad at wanting specific directions I think it's harder than what people realize when you're sometimes when you're in there but I think that if you're using a map you're going to be like you need to get on the M1 or you need to turn left on Bolivar Road or something like that just like make it clear like that I don't know what the communication style

21:27 Was like but it looked like there's going to be some issues which is going to follow them to Bangkok says it was not a good look that they had navigation issues in the US yep not a good look where it's supposed to be easy and also they were probably driving an automatic not a stick shift and release saying Annalee went flying through it and that is so true like she went flying through to the point where she was she was actually going airborne quite a bit and even they were likable actually as a group so many likable cast members but she was gone at one point she was moving so fast that her feet was leaving the tightrope and I was like girl you better hang on to that you're gonna go flying but impressive speed that you went from the one side to the other side Sandy's saying Amazing Race really brings back former winners even for handing out a clue yeah so that was cool to see I don't know where Derek and Claire lives maybe they're in Los Angeles and that's why they could just quickly pop them over and release saying over 50 minutes for a word scramble very disappointed and myself as it took me eight minutes to solve it as I assumed the two letters was l and I'm always mad and hard on myself it takes me more than 20 to 30 minutes to solve word scrambles in general that is how fast I like to move on tightropes the one thing I will say about that specific word scramble

22:47 Was I think it would have been difficult in the sense that you didn't have like a paper and a pen or anything to write something down on or didn't look like they could write it down I don't think I'm good like if I have to like mentally put it out there like if I have something to write on I probably would be able to unscramble it pretty quickly so that I think that would have been a big stumbling block for me personally I would have gotten past it but I would have struggled and it's probably one of the reasons why so many people I feel like struggled on this because there weren't that many teams that got through it really effectively I think who is the other people that got through that really quickly it was the older couple and they did well this whole first race in fact they ended up first there was Jocelyn Victor they went through that really quickly Robin Corey went through that quickly and then Greg and John went through that quickly and no surprises there all three of them did end up in the top three by the end of this so it kind of showed that they were doing really good Frosty Todd when did I say Todd not too sure but anyway so yeah so this was interesting to see obviously after that really good move by team orange

24:07 Todd right very good move by Todd now get who Todd is very good move by him because he does figure it out as well and makes a deal to get to the front of the line so you can skip the line and he would give it to everybody else which I thought was kind of when Boston Rob played The Amazing Race when he was like negotiating with people at pit stops and legs and it was cool to see that level of strategy make its way to The Amazing Race which means that they can move up to fourth or fifth place leaving there so really gave them a massive leg up especially if you consider that when they get to the airport they find out that only six teams can leave on the first plane living there so that probably got him into that first play plane where he was like somewhere in the back of the pack but he was able to use his sales skills his manipulation as negotiation to get forward and releasing a podcast on flying Frosty for the world scramble answers he should compete in the challenge next yep very good I think from him to get there they obviously figure out that they're going to the other City of Angels which is going to be Bangkok and that is where they're flying to next as they get to the airport at the airport another really cool moment that stood out for me and I think that we saw this scene

25:27 For a reason they didn't need to show us this was Greg and John the two brothers in the yellow talking to Robin Corey the father and the son the father who's death and specifically we find out in this moment that John has been practicing sign language which I think is really cool and this means that already there's something that's going to bond these two teams together if it comes down to like some sort of an alliance or working together in the future I can very easily see those two teams working together so I think that's a massive Arsenal in the tool that they've got and it was cool to see that they were sort of showing us a little bit of that airport moments there as teams were getting together and getting to know each other there as well but moving on to Bangkok and flying into Bangkok on that first flight obviously a team that killed it this whole time was Jocelyn and Victor and coming into Bangkok immediately they've got a little bit of I'd say an advantage because Victor knows a little bit of the local language or he's got at least some sort of a grasp because what I would assume his native tongue is very similar to that of what people speak over in Bangkok so he is able to communicate a little bit there which I think does help when you're in a country where you can speak the language to navigate and

26:48 Immediately you've just got that leg up on people who don't speak the local language right so that was interesting to see I love the whole dynamic between the two of them they are another favorite team like I feel like every single team I bring up I'm like I really like them and then I'm like I really like this team as well which again hats up to the casting for bringing so many great characters onto our screen but you know seeing the dynamic between them where Jocelyn is kind of the boss where they work and Victor has to be like second and charge and then they've got the dynamic at house and talking about how you can't complain about your co-worker or your boss because you're working and living with them they just seem to be a really lovable couple and doing extremely well at this point they seem kind of like wise I think it's the right word for it like they've experienced a lot and I've always said that Amazing Race suits generalists people that have done a little bit of everything in life so I feel like they could be a team that could do really well throughout the season make sure you hook me in or my mother will kill you yeah she was definitely not happy being up there and her mother looks so similar so I could see why some people would say she's like a mini version of her or even like they could be sisters because the mother still looks good some good genes I'll tell you that Danica's saying I had commercials

28:08 I usually watch Paramount plus the next day but with this new job I don't have time I don't mind the am lives but I'm usually driving until 7 15 ish right well moving forward we've got daylight savings kicking in pretty soon so I think for you Danica on that side it will move everything an hour later which will maybe help a little bit with your schedule when we do these lives it's really hard to always get them at the right time because of the time difference and yes lovable Nikki says congratulations on the new job congratulations I'm starting my new job on Monday which just happens to be in travel so you know I think this is going to be interesting taking notes Here on The Amazing Race who knows you know maybe add more countries to my list that I can visit over the next year or so which I'm excited about as well but yeah really loved really loved that team there Todd and Ashley they talk about the rough patch that they had in their marriage which I think is going to come back to play at some stage later on in the show just the way that they communicate I think at some stage the he's a little bit more A type personality than what she is so I think that's going to come definitely into play the sisters over they're the first ones to get to the express pass they're the first one to get to that first route info station and they

29:29 Have to eat a plate of gross food and for me that's horrible like whenever you've got to go in and you've got to eat a plate of gross food I've said it many times I'm a big fan of the challenge as well of a Miranda food eating stuff like miss me with that at least in this case everything seemed like dried out and crunchy it would be way worse if it was like soggy or almost like raw you know you have to eat it but that's like it's spiders and was almost looked like maggots and all sorts of stuff in a plate which did not look appealing but they had enough time and the dynamic between the sisters here are very interesting because you've got I believe Morgan who's the older sister Lena is the younger sister and she's just Morgan was just going and On Lena like Lena finish your plate get this food down as she was like struggling to do it and it was so it was so entertaining to watch hats often before getting it done because there's only one situation I would eat that kind of food and that is if I'm on a race for a million dollars you would not get me chowing down on anything gross like that if I didn't have to for the money thank you so much lovable Nikki dedicated saying I gave trouble picking a favorite until about the 30 unless it's an All-Stars type where I know the players ahead of time I agree especially on The Amazing Race

30:49 It takes me two or three episodes even just to remember the names and who's Who Andrew Lee says insect eating the wings are the worst part as you are trying to get the wings unstuck from your teeth yep I can I could see that Danica saying I love my new job congratulations on your new job thank you so much Andrea Lee's saying I would absolutely leave a tarantula last that's most likely the one to make me chandu which let's throw up I'm not sure if that's the same over there in the US due to the squishiness of the abdomen I haven't even thought about that but I would just I would just buy through I'd probably take the Morgan approach and not even think about what I'm eating I would just be saying to myself chicken you know KFC I would just be throwing it like I wouldn't I would not want to think about it I think if you slow down and you start overthinking it's when you kind of think yourself out of doing it but a few teams at that point try to catch up to them and try to do it as well they all sort of notice that no the sisters were going to get through this before them and the next roadblock they have to go to the next I guess checkpoint is that the wet sutat Temple which by the way is beautiful it

32:09 Was beautiful white temple the whole area in Bangkok I've never been to Thailand it's so close to where I am now in Australia and I know a lot of Australians go there for like holiday because it's almost more affordable to go to Thailand than what it is to go from the east side of Australia to the west side of Australia like if you want to go to Perth it's more expensive than flying to Thailand so a lot of people just go to Thailand so it should be very hype on my list of countries to go and visit and yeah beautiful place beautiful Temple that they have to go to have to get onto a boat as well as they're going there this Long Boat which was beautiful to see in the Riverside with this impressive big Buddha there's Golden Buddha in the background which I thought was just beautiful added to the whole thing and the Order of how they arrived there it's no surprise that Jocelyn and Victor the Asian couple they're there first they're doing a really good job followed by Robin Corey in second place that's the dad and son so those two teams killing it from the beginning until the end they then have to choose between a detour one of the detours would be swordplay and the other one would be spa day now I don't know about everybody

33:29 Else here on the live if I heard spa day a spa day on The Amazing Race I'd be like not doing that because that's going to be hella painful I would just know that Amazing Race they're not going to give you a free spa day come on like who's the military brothers that ended up Liam and Jeremy and they're like oh yeah we could do with a spa like it's going to be a nice relaxing event for them to do I would not have wanted to jump into that spot at all I would not want to do this by day because I would have just known it would hurt but swordplay on the other end I've got a background in karate I've done karate for geez going close to 20 years now and karate there is such a thing as Kata which is basically a an assembly of movements that you do to demonstrate your skill set for the belt that you're at right and the way that you do it is kind of like dance choreography that you have to learn so similar to the couple later on when they get there I believe it was Joe and Ian they were one of the last couples to get there they kind of broke down the sword play into segments that's how I would work on my mind as well like teach myself in segments how to

34:49 Do it but I feel like because of that any kind of choreography any kind of complex moves you've got to put together my brain functions like that I would be able to do that but then again I was going to ask Michelle what she would do and I've got a feeling and she could correct me if I'm wrong she may see this at a later stage but oh speak of the devil hello oh my God so many issues are now outside in the dark sorry my headphones turned off because I don't have anyone talking to me what did you say in the dark I'm outside in the dark I'm very sorry but I had to do what I had to do I can't even see my notes because I've written them in Gold so like I feel like I feel like you did they call you back for Sydney survival All-Stars and you're out there playing right now you've got to ask permission to quickly jump on and do your bit for The Amazing Race oh my God no I'm actually going to start I'm gonna we're filming Sydney Survivor two in a in a few weeks so yeah no not all stars I think they have to have like four seasons or five seasons before they can have an All-Stars yeah all right well we've we've got it up to the point and I will definitely roll back and ask you a few questions that I ask the audience already and they've been really good they've been my co-host tonight but
