Australian Survivor: BvW Episodes 17 - 18 Recap

0:01 Welcome back to the nullifier tank where we've got the tnt takes for you on australian survivor episode 17 and episode 18 and i'm joined as always here by michelle one of my co-hosts on the nullified take normally michelle we talk the amazing race but i'm fortunate enough to talk to you two weeks in a row about australian survivor how have you been doing michelle good i've been actually tracking where the aussie teams are right now i won't tell you but it's been very interesting i wish i was one of them however the amazing race for those that are wondering what you're talking about the teams yeah the amazing race so yeah and enjoying having both survivors at the same time it's tiring for me but it's always nice to have your week filled with your favorite shows yeah i mean it's kept me busy i've nearly dropped a video every single day this week and i've been doing that for a couple of weeks now but i'm really enjoying having both shows on our screen and they're so different i think michelle you kind of pointed out to that some people are really comparing the two now and there's certain people who love the aussie version more than the us version some people like the us version more than the aussie version where do you sit on all of this like you know

1:21 Based on what you've seen so far do you have a favorite or is it like your child you can't choose between them it is honestly it is like children they're different i will not compare because they're very different things you know the behemoth of survivor us that's been around 21 years you know i don't like making comparisons i take them as what they are you know what if i had to compare out our challenges are a lot harder physically they're interesting they make new things up they're forever innovating the look the character development's the same i think we just have more time you know the whole purple calis end up in both seasons not so much in america too much anymore more in the australian season there's more people to get through and i don't think the editing on australian survivor is as good as your survivor currently yeah i think the u.s survivor in the off season like jeff says he doesn't listen to tweets and he doesn't care when people come at him but someone somewhere has done their homework in the offseason

2:41 And they've actually listened to the outcry of criticism on how they've edited the show there's certain things that's changed there's a visible old-school feeling to this season with new school twists it's almost like you get a little bit of both in season 42 and i do feel like the editing for australian survivor season after season is getting worse and worse and worse and this season for me is the worst because there's two people in my mind that's going to win this show one of those two people are going to win it and that's just basically edit and i feel like the us have had seasons where they've had purple edits but not 70 or 80 of the cast this purple edited in the same way like this season of australian survivor and for me the edit has really been a downside to the season and this is not taking away from any of the players that are playing in the season because i think they're all very capable they seem to all be very charismatic you watch the ponderosa videos afterwards where they're all spending time clearly they're charismatic the editing team themselves i feel like they think australians are dumb and they have to spoon fed them who they need to look at and why do they do that why do they insult the intelligence of the australian public i don't know i don't want anyone to lose their job but the entire editing team needs to be sacked i'm sorry start afresh a new i they're just getting worse and worse maybe there's a new editing team this year

4:01 And they're actually the new guys i'm sorry you're doing worse you're doing worse than any other scene if you even listen to this like just you know we know you guys can do better and i say this because can you imagine michelle you're this person you've applied for the amazing race plenty of times now if you've applied for survivor four or five seasons in a row you finally get onto the show this is your dream you tell all of your family members i'm gonna go into this show you're going to see me pull out this and this move and none of that makes screen time in fact you don't even get a specific confessional in an episode just to say how your day's been going so your family doesn't like there's certain times where they go a whole week without knowing what you're thinking in the game but we have to hear sam and jordy tell us the same thing 17 times in an episode 12 times and it's like why do we have to see the same thing like i love both of them but the editors are to blame for some of the overkill that we get on some of these players this season and it's been hard to watch i don't know if you feel the same about it sounds like you do but i do feel like they need to do better so welcome to those that are jumping in the live stream we're getting the venting session out very early on here myself and michelle this is therapy to the week cdmax says how can anyone re-watch the season with all these non-eliminations and episodes 16 17 and 18 and we definitely will talk about that lovable nikki welcome to the livestream we always

5:22 Love having you here and that's one of the big takeaways for this week so we might as well start there we'll work our way all over the place it's like we how we'd like to do it here on this podcast but let's talk about we don't do anything in a straight line we're handy people exactly you know but that's what makes it so much fun you know so let's start with purgatory you know we obviously in this first episode in any case get shay going to purgatory i put a comment on facebook this week on your group the australian survivor fan page to say got a little bit heated there towards the end i noticed that you turned the comments off but i asked the very basic question like do you like purgatory do you hate it do you love it are you neutral to it and 41 of people said they love purgatory in australia 32 of people were neutral and 25 of people said they hated it michelle where do you sit on purgatory if you had to choose if i if i forced you to choose one of those things and i guess you can be neutral but what do you lean towards like i'm sure you're central leaning to one of the two i like purgatory if it ran for the whole season it's it always feels as if it's targeted towards a bunch of people that they don't want to lose if it was there for the whole season you know like they've done in american survivor before if

6:42 You go out one or two come back in if you go out and it works like that all the way along it doesn't feel biased a lot of the fans thinks it's biased oh this person's been saved this person's been put back in if it was a whole season good also if you're going to have people go there don't have three quarters of them return why they put four out and put three back in why even bother with purgatory just leave it leave it just let one person leave and not put up with all this it's just it's a waste of episodes i like that when you come back it can cause a bit of trouble especially if you go out and come back in and then you're after revenge but if you're going to have four go out put one or two back in don't put three back in i mean poor michelle who's wanted to get on survivor and then she's at the only one out of four who doesn't go back nice she loses her buff like jlp gets her to throw her buff into the fire oh no not me we all know how difficult it is to get our hands on one of these buffs for australian survivors and she loses that in this episode i mean michelle did you have you been able to get your hands on a buff already or no i used to try i'm waiting for them to come down below 500

8:03 But i will eventually get one because i need one because i've got all the other seasons merge buffs but why make her put in the fire like yeah i know it's happened in the past in the us seasons but why we've moved on from that let them keep the thing that shows that they've been on survivor the thing that i know cara's and haley still smell like smoke it's the whole memory thing for them like the twins didn't even get an edit so you then throw her buff in the fire like so a little bit of behind the scenes for how survivors of africa production works they've got two buffs i was told because they've got one buff that they use for the challenges with the mic already in the buff and then one that they have around camp but i feel like with australian survivor it's different they only have one buff that they wear all the time so her losing this she's got some sentimental value to it she's been out there for how many days she's been out there she's earned her spot now she's got to throw it into the fire it's okay for those seasons where like with the us we there's plenty of buffs i mean we can give you buffs anytime but for the australian version i really hate seeing this at the end here but i do want to continue to stick on purgatory because it sounds to me like you're very similar to me on this but you're not the biggest fan of this and especially not the way that it's being implemented

9:24 This season i would have personally been more of a fan of it if we had what other blood versus water seasons had which like you mentioned had a redemption island there was an element of you being able to sacrifice yourself to go in instead of your loved one and fight to stay in the game and we had dooms like i used to i remember by the way michelle as a day one fan when redemption island came in i hated it i've always hated any twist where someone gets voted out they get to come back in the game and it was always my worst fear that we were going to have a winner that would win that way and now we've had three winners and three different franchises that have won that way and i've never been a fan of that at all and i know fans are very hap like in general it seems like i am the old school salty fan that can't move with the times here but they could have done something different here that would have been more exciting to watch and i think a redemption island would have fitted into the season so i'm very perplexed as to why they didn't follow the format that was used before in a blood versus water season exactly and i'd look if it push comes to shove i'd rather not have it at all but if we have to have something like that yes make it go the whole season because people are not happy yeah so jenny k here says those buffs are so hard to get i can't even get one hated that paul michelle had to burn hers we agree with you jimmy says and welcome

10:44 Jimmy to the live stream and jenny as well the buffs are like gold these days they are three on ebay at the moment with one going for 4.99 what the hell i bought one for about 500 i am not ashamed to admit that and here jenny kay says redemption island sending two back to sending two back into the merge would have made scenes and doing it that way rather than purgatory but let's get over it like i mean it's happened let's talk about what is the actual game in front of us here it does not help us sitting here and sulking and being salty about what is in front of us let's talk about purgatory as a whole it looked absolutely horrible when geordi got back he said they couldn't shower for like three or four days or however long they were there couldn't know can you ima like i don't know about you michelle i love in the mornings first thing i'm in the shower in the evenings before i go to bed i'm in the shower sometimes if i have like a real quick workout in the in the afternoon like i love showering but no washing whatsoever like nothing i mean i would have died can you imagine the body odor being out there on purgatory in that heat would have been horrible i know and apparently the shelter that shea made is still standing someone put a photo up in the group of the shelter and it's

12:04 Surrounded by this beautiful green grass whereas they just had dirt when they were there yeah but the shelter's there so that's amazing to be able to go and see that her perseverance as someone that got voted out in this game like you know so easily you could have just gone and sat there and said my game is over she immediately went to work like day one she's out there getting a camp ready can you imagine like i mean you've not eaten for so many days you've got no energy you're out there having to bolt this thing from scratch on your own without anybody else there and the outback for those that don't know australia's got a lot of poisonous creatures and creepies out there and things like yes there's a production team out there but how much can they really help you if something goes down there so it must have been pretty scary for someone like show i'm sure is not used to being out in the wild like that on their own yeah and i heard that around that camp they actually had to have three fires going to keep the dingos away wow yeah so that's not good not good whatsoever i felt really bad for shea when she got there and she was forced to stay in the game but i also knew that shay has got the ability to pull off a hayley in the sense that she could come back

13:24 In this game and she could potentially win some challenges she's someone that's proven herself to be really good at challenges the one thing i don't think she does not have that hayley has got is that strategic social skills and that ability to add to the ability of being good at challenges and i think that's probably where she's going to struggle but i would say hayley coming back right now for those people that are in the game that she's one of the two people maybe the second person that they did not want to see come back in the game you mean shay sorry shay coming back again she's probably the second most feared person coming back in the game from purgatory i agree i agree and it was always going to come down to i always thought it was going to come down to kj and michelle being the last two i thought they would actually both go unless it was a puzzle challenge and michelle might have had more of a chance which is what sam looked for when michelle went she said to michelle i hope you get a puzzle challenge or something like that so you can fight your way back but it's australian survivor how often do we see puzzles in this show you know like we have one criticism i love the challenges on australian survivor and there's a whole new show coming pretty soon to australia which i'm super excited about called the challenge australia australian survivors are about to take over this thing like i'm

14:44 Sure when they go all the way and by the way i don't know if you're aware of this i listened to dave ganat's podcast who authorized this with luke turkey and he said that he went for an interview for a casting call not that long ago didn't say for what but if you put two and two together the challenge australia is starting to look for people right now as well so okay so they're not filming yet they're not no they just started they just started quarantine for the challenge cbs so the challenge cbs has just gotten and quarantined i don't know if you know who's in that season from survivor us but there's a couple of famous survivor us players yeah i've heard but where are they filming that one so all of these seasons are going to be full and filmed in argentina and i think how it's going to work is it's going to be back to back so the host of the show tj levin apparently is going to host all of them so he's going to host the australian one he's going to host the uk one and the argentinian one and they're doing it in argentina but talking about the challenges australian survivors are gonna go kill the challenge for those reasons but the one thing that the challenge does put in there is puzzles and mathematics and things like that so it's going to be very interesting to see how they cope with this because they're not used to it from australian survivor they get well no they're not i mean u.s survivor made them do a challenge a puzzle challenge blindfolded

16:05 This week well there's a step up australian doesn't even do it normal site and they choose jonathan to help them do that puzzle marcus says we could tell that chris really likes the challenge marcus i'm gonna convert you might you just stick around on the channel before you know you're going to be a challenge fan as well chris likes the challenge as much as i like amazing race so it's pretty shocking yeah i just have a lot of shows that i like and it's anything where there's competition involved and there's like some sort of athleticism and like the amazing race survivor the challenge that all kind of fit into each other really well but furthermore on this week specifically looking at these episodes we've got people coming back into the show right now we've got jordy as well as shay coming back jordy before he goes out he tries everything i mean he's trying everything to make people aware that both mark and sam have got idols but no one wants to believe him in this game michelle what's going wrong for jordy here because we as audience members are sitting there with our hands in our hair and we're frustrated and like why are you not listening to this guy but what are we not seeing that is happening because mark and sam have an awesome social game they're just so connected to everybody that once someone else tries to

17:27 Make them seem less than what they are they take it with a grain of salt they may not believe it even if they do start believing it they may still want to stay with sam and mark and think oh well they've got two idols maybe that'll assist me as well since i'm really close to them i don't know i don't know i wouldn't have them both together at the end anyway i would have got rid of all the pairs before merge i don't understand but they've got an awesome social game that's all i can think of yeah and we spoke about this last week the perfect balance between paranoia which you know if sam if you're listening to this i don't mean it in a bad way it's good to be a bit paranoid on survivor you need to be paranoid 24 7. i would be you know all the time it's like if two people walk off to the side like they're talking about me they're definitely gonna vote me out so i get it but you know mark doesn't have any of that he's got iciness veins does not react to anything so i feel like they balance each other out perfectly on the show but you talk about their social game and i want to talk about someone that's extremely under-edited specifically in the show for me and probably in my opinion the person up until this point who actually socially is the best connected and that's josh i honestly feel like

18:47 Josh is the person like even this week no one wants to make a move until just says now is the time to flush the idol now's the time and suddenly people are like dave is like it's on i can start talking to people so it's almost like they're asking or waiting for permission like josh is their dad he's the one that will give them permission as to when they can potentially make that move against mark and sam and this is where mark's game i think especially comes in handy because mark has been the solid loyal guy that josh clearly values josh values someone that he can trust that's not going to change things on him last minute and i think that has really helped both mark and sam in this game because he's been with mark for so long and he's trusted him he's chosen mark over jordy very early on in this game but it's interesting to see how josh operates because the one problem that josh has is that he is very open with information he thinks he can play a trusting and open and honest game he's playing a very old-school survivor game where you can tell someone i'm going to vote somewhere down the line that is going to come back to bite him because you can't always give information like the episode where geordi goes out and wins an immunity is because joss tells him you're in danger you need to win an immunity and he ups his game to win it but that's information he shouldn't have given and he clearly tells people when they're on the block i think that's going to be his downfall ultimately in this game

20:07 Because now jordy knows he can't work with him at this stage because he's been voted out josh is clearly the person that he couldn't move i wouldn't be surprised if at some point jordy goes to mark and sam and says let's do something together here these guys are not going to move i'll move with you guys type of thing because he's going to try and i don't think sam and mark will work with geordie at all but do you think josh has been like a stable try mate and that's why people have listened to him because he doesn't make crazy swift weird moves he's pretty level-headed well what from what we see and i think people value that in that they're not scared in what he might propose yeah and he's not gonna hold them he's not gonna he's not gonna hold them responsible for other plans that they might have or for bouncing ideas off them that might not be what they're thinking right now and i think just to me and i'd love to have an interview with josh after this whole thing is over i know that i've spoken to mark once or twice about potentially coming on for an interview and at some point i will probably get him on for an interview because he does listen to some of the podcasts and some of the interviews and things that we do here i'm hoping that through him i can get to josh and josh come on and talk to us because i feel like josh to me is mark

21:27 In his first season but mark marco got a lot further because marcus had that same coolness about him that same level-headedness about him but he got voted out and he had four years or however long to come back and plan to play this game differently and i feel like josh to me if he comes back on another season is going to be an absolutely killer game and most people might underestimate him because he's been so underedited in my mind because i think nobody really knows how dangerous of a player he can be but clearly he's got a good social game clearly yeah like if you were out there michelle what would you look for in an alliance member you'd look for stability you'd look for someone that's not gonna you know be erratic in the decision-making i feel like josh is kind of like that i don't know like because when i when i play online games i usually have my alliance set up on day one so i'm really looking at character i look at character really closely and the conversations i have and i base it on that so i don't i don't tend to change alliances based on moves and things like that however coming from a place of experience geordi is dangerous so dangerous because when you're voted out and you come back in you are out for revenge but

22:47 He is so outward in his revenge and so outward in his thoughts and what he wants to do it may be his downfall when i'm out for revenge i do it so slyly that eventually that person gets voted out because they're not allowed in if they voted me out but you do it all surreptitiously you do it all you know on the quiet whereas i think jordy's too bombastic he's too out there he's gonna he's going to probably kill himself trying to kill them off but i mean we'll have to see i mean but jordy is and jordi's defense here and i've enjoyed jordy this season a lot like i mean at least he brings some resistance to the show we need that you know in the show but you know i think he was pretty low-key and behind the scenes on what his plans were until his brother got blindsided and that's when the gears shifted for him and it became personal and sadly you can't yeah and sadly you can't play survivor that way but it's i mean i don't want to be a hypocrite and say that i wouldn't i would probably if somebody voted my sister or my brother out of the game i think i would struggle with that especially the way that jesse was voted out his idol got stolen like if you're in the moment within that game you're going to feel a certain way about that and it's going to make you feel a lot more a play a lot

24:07 More aggressive game but i think marcus brings up a really good point here he says that jordy's reputation as a player hasn't helped him as other players think if he can turn against sam and mark he can turn against anybody and i think that jordy's biggest mistake was going to josh he misread josh because when he told josh about the idol josh was so loyal to mark he i feel like josh and mark probably and i could be wrong here but i feel like they're the same type of people like they're very level-headed stand-up guys feel that they like honor and trust and being a good like they're both heroes you know what i mean and joy is a villain and he went to these two heroes and tried to split them up and it was never going to work so he miscalculated his own relationship with josh and it and it costed his brother his spot in the game which i think that like we said last week jesse probably would have gone a lot further if it wasn't for the case that jordy overplayed yeah now michelle looking at this whole scenario it's an ugly scenario that's followed sam even throughout this week like we've seen posts online we've seen people commenting on her physique and how she looks and things like that which is just horrible to see online absolutely horrible to see online what is it that i can i know nobody that listens to

25:28 This podcast is going to be a part of that because people who listen to this podcast they're more after the strategy they appreciate the moves that she pulled that it was a big move what is it that makes people look at this show and think that they can go off on people on the tv show and just you know this is a real problem we have i feel like at the moment when it comes to survivor and there's just there's this disconnect between it being a game and what sam has done and i feel like the australian public like there's something there culturally for the for the for the casual person that watches it where they just can't seem to understand that this is a game what is it you're closer to me i'm in auckland new zealand i'm from south africa originally we're very cutthroat in south africa you know we climb our way to the top anyway i mean you've seen survivors of africa what is it that culturally in australia really is just hitting people over there yeah and i think basically it comes down to the old mateship in australia you'll stand by your mates you don't go against them and here people are seeing the alliance as a mateship and if you break that alliance or you suddenly go against your friend you are not a good person and i think this is what lends in to especially the casual fans seeing them as traitors seeing them as a bad person and then attacking their character their physicalities just they attack

26:48 Anything they possibly can because they don't like the person and what they've done to their mates which is so frustrating as a 20-year fan people not understanding the game and it's strategy yes if you go against someone in strategy if you hold on to someone's idol she did not steal it out of his bag she said i can hold it for you i can get it back to camp that is not a bad thing he didn't ask for it back that was his fault he was the one who did the wrong thing she didn't do anything she held on to it he was voted out yes she voted him out he was her right-hand man but she's trying to get to the end it's survivor she's she definitely stole it but it's everything let's steal it she said to him do you want me to hold it back to camp he said yes how is that stealing she didn't say here grab it off his body and take it off him i will fight you she knew michelle she knew michelle she knew what she was doing and she got wondering what she was doing but at the end of the day michelle i agree with you on the fact that it's a great move which i mean the fact that we still have controversy and people feeling a certain way towards sam about this i hope if sam ever listens to the this podcast she probably doesn't but if mark listens

28:08 To this that he tells her to listen to this section yeah he can tell her listen to this bit alone sam like you're gonna go down as a legend no matter what like people are going to talk about this move an australian survivor if the show goes on for another 10 15 or 20 seasons you're going to be remembered and at the end of the day the people who matter those are the people that are close to you the people that you hold dear their opinions matter and then most of the really big fans that this is an outliner of people that are super negative they go online you always hear the bad stuff like even when you work for like a customer service center somewhere and you're doing a work it's only the negative reviews that come in easily it's always harder to get people that are satisfied because people that are happy and they're normal in life they just go on about their business but it's this small minority that's very loud that you're hearing at the moment and that will fade away but the move itself it's debatable if it's going to be a good move in the long term for her as an individual to win but if it gets mark even to win who seems to be the person in my mind that is better situated to win because everybody likes him at this point then that's still a win because it's kind of like when boston rob and amber won the money they both won the money at the end of the day it didn't matter everybody thought that they prevented rob from getting the money and then he married amber and got all over them actually i want to ask a question though is sam's idol going to work this is the big

29:28 Question people are still pondering because of the wording of the piece of paper is it going to work is she going to get to tribal pull out the idol and jlp is going to say no this holds no power i don't like i don't think so i feel like because he gave her the idol to hold that it was in her position and whoever's position it is it will work until the point where you're voted out with it in your possession so i think because he agreed to give her the idol it's her idol actually so you're right in the sense that she got temporary access to that idol he got voted out before she could transfer it back to him so he never said no like you can hold on to it but it's all my idol you can't use it or anything like that but it'll be interesting maybe they blindside us with the edit i mean look at nasir last season with the goat on astro turf phrase that he used that nobody saw him looking for the idol the day before so maybe there will be like a wind back and rewind back to that where jesse says i'm happy for you to hold on to it but it's my idol still you know and if that's on camera then maybe we can as an audience still get blindsided but i feel like australian survivor feels like they need to spoon feed us everything so if that happened but do you think they said that on the note so they couldn't so that the idol couldn't be swapped and given to someone else as he would vote it out as has happened in the past i think that's why

30:48 They said it yeah i think so as well let's have a look at a couple of comments here that is coming in while we're chatting the hangout room says that all the singles should be feeling like jordy i agree but i think that there's a few people now michelle that are coming back like kj and shay they're not going to play nice i mean they're going to be the misfits alliance coming in now and they only need one person to make a tie the problem is will chrissy or dave do anything will dave finally get juicy we're waiting for him to get juicy stop with that flame god he's not he's not juicy at all at this point there's nothing happening he's deflated there's no juice yeah cedar cd agrees with us he says there are too many passive players who don't realize they're at the bottom do nothing to improve their position in the game we agree it's frustrating to watch it's easy to see from the outside though sometimes you can't tell when you're actually in a game what's happening but it's easy for us to see what's happening yeah and also again the editors are not telling us what people like jordan is thinking so tianne welcome to the live stream i've never seen you here before dion says why is jordan so invisible edited like he's there in the majority of scenes but it's almost like he's just the robin to just as batman and then

32:08 He laughs about it and that's a good point you know it was interesting here because when ultimately when geordi and we haven't spoken about this but when jordy wins the ute the isuzu i'm so happy for him he got something great out of the show i mean he had that line earlier in the season where he said that sixty thousand dollars that khan won like i mean is this the season with the best rewards like you know 60 000 and he's like that's more money than me and jesse made last year and he gets this youth which is amazing and by the way how lucky how lucky were they to get geordi to win the ute because he's always wanted it so he could sell it to everybody on tv and yeah look at this look at this function like he was almost like jordy if you're listening to this you should go sell isuzu you probably make a lot of money as a salesperson as usual get him on the phone get call him like jordy's got personality i think he could be a salesperson you know oh definite personality there geez one of the things i wanted to say about him you know obviously winning the sorry winning this reward going on with the azusa and that as he gets to choose certain people to come with him and jordan is one of the people that he chooses you know and jordan gets to have a conversation with him and he tries to get jordan to turn against mark and sam and he kind of gets both jordan and michelle to believe him that they need to make a move but clearly

33:29 Josh is probably the downside to jordan's game at this point he's probably preventing jordan from doing anything and jordan kind of feels like he's going to listen to josh because he's the person who brought him into that alliance when they hit the tribe swap so he's kind of like jordan's become a passive player because of his cousin in my mind yeah i agree yeah they're funny marcus is very different they're so different the yeah very different marcus says there was an article on template talking about the 11 best australian survivor moves and sam's was at the top within the top 10 or up the top i think that channel 10 probably feels very guilty about everything that's going on with sam at the moment because i mean at the end of the day these are people that they do care about they you know spend time with them out there on the island they bring them into the to the fold and then these kind of things happen and on that note like it got to the point where pia does not like want to talk about australian survivor much i mean she told me this much when i interviewed her on the podcast and she talked about how bad she was perceived when she cut luke out i mean how dare she want to win the money for herself like i love luke as much as anybody else but she got so much hate towards her when that happened and it's one of those things where i think pia was very critical that the support wasn't there when she was being bashed like that and i hope that support is there for sam
