0:01 And we are back with day 35 of Survivor 46 and 46 I'm almost done y'all and today I definitely hit a wall but Ben just won Heroes hillers Hustlers I was very bored for most of the day I took three naps it was a lot of fun today we are joined by Naomi who co- and we've had one producer we have now the other New York we've had I think a couple of people from P silent podcasts so silent podcaster and host of Mike White is oh Mike White was robbed which I'm really excited to get to that one after I finish tomorrow another boring season and this going right into this hi first of off thank you so much for actually offering to do this because I had zero offers for this at all so like the fact that you offered to do this I appreciate what was your first experience with this season because this is a like timeline wise this wasn't that long ago so what was your first experience of the season and what were your initial thoughts we're not talking about the theme right now just the initial thoughts as you finish the season well I will say that Drew thank you for having me this was

1:21 So early in my Survivor career because here's the timeline let me like paint a little picture my boyfriend my ex-boyfriend dumps me in like 2016 I have [ __ ] nothing to do with my internship my friends are like Naomi you got to start watching Survivor I'm like fine I will watch Survivor I get totally addicted to it and then I catch the tail end of Survivor Millennials vers Gen X and I'm like oh this Show's actually pretty crazy I'm super into it so then I watch game Changers live that's the first season I ever watched in its entirety crazy and thank God that they had two people from Millennials versus genx so I kind of knew who was who it was but I was really sort of like wow this is nuts and then this season comes along and it's really the first like entirely newbie season I started from the beginning and at this point I was going to the bar to play Mafia at Stone Creek RP Stone Creek we miss you dearly I was spending time with you know Infamous people like Jordan Kish and Tik toac Nicole and it was really St to be like wow like we really like Survivor and this is entertaining and that's why I wanted to revisit the season is because it was a season I watched live I never

2:41 Really touched again but has I think grown into like a monstrosity of a I guess like it has an aura about it right everyone is sort of like oh Ben or like oh all the idols or oh the fir making twist and so it's like okay I haven't watched it since it came out let's take a peek at it so I was glad that it was open in a veil and that we could talk about it right now and I want to go right into that because I hate Survivor conspiracy theories I think they're just the worst I don't like conspiracy theories just in general as a history guy I just think that sometimes bad [ __ ] just happens there's no dark forces that are forcing bad [ __ ] to happen and this is the prime case with this one because I wasn't in the Online survivor Community until 2020 but I was still a fan so every time every time I watch a season I just have my own thoughts on people and the season and that's it then I get online in 2020 and I realized that most people at the time thought that this season was fake and that Co was fake so most of them were morons but they not fake that how much do that overlap although it's funny I would say I would guess that the people who think Co is fake are not trying to take away Ben's win you know that's like a funny crossover yeah they're they two groups but they

4:02 They were so convinced that the season was rigged for Ben and my defense has always been yes I'm not a Ben person but and I will and I've said this many times throughout the last 35 days Survivor has shown that they have favorites they have favorites that they love Azie s coach among others that haven't won the game and if you think that they're not gonna have fix it for those people to win the game why would they fix it for some J Bron named Ben playing in his first time and then they say well he's a he's a Marine and it's different I was like well do you cop from Thailand Ken the cop from Thailand got a standing ovation when he said he was a cop a New York City Cop because it happened right after 911 if they're not GNA rig it for Ken the cop in Thailand they're not gonna rig it for Ben the Marine in 35 you know where did he find all these idols it's not like you're hiding these Idols in places that like are just you're shown his thinking process throughout so why do you think that there was so much anger and hatred that went into Ben's why do you think there was this there's this sense of a rigging with Ben's win this season without actually like talking about the actual because we're gonna get to that why do you think people

5:22 Hated it that much they felt like well they fixed it for that well I think Gabe in the comments has a good point which is like it's just that we didn't know was happening and didn't Jeff hint at it like the whole season Bas or like I remember Jeff kind of like hinting at that there would be a big twist but the reality is I think that it's very similar to a Mike Holloway win in that one person was so incredibly determined to follow One path to Victory then had no path to Victory except for x and then at the same concurrent time the Survivor producers got their got their britches in a Twist about what I would say in general is the final four Fallen Angel it was and I think it actually was really started by David on Millennials versus Gen X yeah and they got wrong but like whatever I know listen don't get be started actually you know what I can't believe I don't have her on my [ __ ] I got to redo my Survivor 50 list again that's so true though but I think that the ey came from the fact that nobody knew this was happening if we knew it from the beginning if the players knew it from the beginning then it fundamentally changes the strategy but because

6:42 Nobody knows what's happening until it's too late it just ruins what we love about Survivor however I would say that there are lots of survivors out there like Australian Survivor that Implement twists that have a never been seen before and B have a huge impact on the game and they're either taken in stride or bitched about by nerds forever and I think that's just the problem about Survivor is because it is one or the other it's either going to be liked immediately or hated immediately the Survivor producers can't be like well do you think everyone's gonna hate this or not because they just don't know I think they just don't know what's going to hit the fan or what's going to be reveled by the fans as like this is a great new twist prime example they tried to do race Wars too and thankfully the one girl quit before but and I and I do agree with you the fact that they introduced this twist late I understand fans you know annoyance with it and I'm I understand players annoyance with it my whole thing has always been this isn't the first time the Survivor has just done this we are now very much in the era of Survivor just kind of throwing things at people and say hey learn on the fly like you don't know The Twist Survivor you don't know what's gonna happen

8:03 Yeah and we really start to get that in season 30 with Dan Foley's extra vote and then every season from there's something introduced and then in Game Changers we just get hit with a bunch of twists we get hit with a bunch of swaps a lot of things that are unnecessary like the fact that they have to have two people set out for them to get a merge Feast I feel like at this point they're trying so hard to push this big moves narrative this you have to do these crazy things to win the game narrative that at a certain point they added you know this specific season even the advantage that Lauren gets earlier in the season where it's like it's not an extra vote you have to do something first to get this extra vote now it's like that's so convoluted just give her the extra vote I feel like that it's not like this was the first time if this was the first time they' had ever done anything crazy like this I would get it but they just did something like this in Kong with taking a juror out yeah and I know people get pissy about that season sorry Michelle won get over it here Ben won and I feel like Ben in that final three yeah okay if it was not a firemaking challenge he probably would have gone home he would

9:23 Have gone home right he didn't he sat there and I felt like he did what he had to do in the situation and you have made this reference someone in the comments has made this reference that it's very Mike Holloway esque yeah I a Mike Holloway person but yeah Mike Holloway like won his challenges but he essentially like so I have two separate thoughts Mike Holloway and we'll talk about I think margus left a good comment too that Mike Holloway and Ben relied on immunity in whatever capacity that doesn't mean that they did the same exact thing but they needed immunity to make it through their moves were complet Ely destroyed by either their social game or their Threat Level within the game and they had no maneuverability except for to access immunity and went out now Marcus has a good comment which I'm sure we're going to get into which is that part of the way that Ben could Thrive and the reason that I don't say that Ben's whole thing was rigged is because very clearly the players around him were lazy and were didn't give a single F didn't give a [ __ ] about what Ben was up to even though they really needed to and you know I think actually this season is so much about Ben but it's also about Chrissy's arrogance and I love Chrissy let me get let me

10:43 You know we going we're going to Chrissy I love Chrissy and I think that there is so much to talk about in this season of arrogance versus gameplay versus how do you advertise that you are a worthy competitor without putting yourself in the spotlight Michael this is a good comment for Michael too that Ben was strategic that was something and this will bringing me to my hot take at a certain point Ben was playing like Ben was playing strategic Ben put on performances he lied he was hiding in the shadows sometimes and like he was the double agent he was the double agent and it worked no one caught on to what was going on and what the crazy part of that is Ben was clocked as the threat at the merge Joe is saying he's telling everyone Ben's a threat Ben's a threat Ben's a threat he keeps saying Ben's a threat and no one is listening to any of it to the point where Ben is now sitting in the middle of two alliances and can throw his vote and play it off to the right people and lean into it with the right people and then yes at final seven when everyone votes for him he does what he has to do and all of a sudden it's everyone versus Ben and that's where that's the Mike

12:03 Holloway comparison for me is Mike was clocked as a threat at merge and Worlds Apart he got through a couple of votes by just being with his folks he stumbles upon Rodney trying to flip things on him and then all of a sudden you know the auction happens and he makes he makes a misstep there and then he just has to win all like it's not like these people have social it's not like at least in Mike's case it's not like he was socially inept or strategically inept he just ran into a situation that he couldn't get out of unless he won and it's same thing with Ben wasn't strategically inept socially yeah like I their the final three just in general I feel like their social game was not the best but that's not knocking it because Ben was still able to be a part of these two groups that were going against each other as someone that you know is a part of a very amazing LRG out there as a as someone that is on the other side of the camera for you is that entertaining watching someone you know idle their way to the end or winning challenges on their way to the end or do you or do you as that person

13:23 The social strategic aspect as a as a viewer I'll say this I think that it is always entertaining to watch somebody who was going to go home get out of it so in particular I think it is most entertaining when somebody who needs an idol finds an idol and plays it I think it's entertaining when somebody who needs to win the challenge wins The Challenge and you can just see everybody go our plans are ruined so I really enjoy situations like that was I enjoying it in this season that's tougher to say and the reason I say that is because I find this season frustrating in the way that Idols have such a defining impact on the end of this game but also in a fascinating way I think that this season and Game Changer had a lot to do with the fact that Idols are like so impossible to use correctly these days like Idols are like an anchor in your game rather than something that could lift you up and benefit you and I think that the impact of Game Changers and this season is felt still today in Survivor no that oh and de and Rick devans

14:45 I yeah rck is in his idols blah Chris Underwood blah you'll get there but we don't want to talk about it yet but I do agree though like this is one of the last seasons one of the last seasons where idle play is prevalently shown if that makes sense it's a big part of The Narrative of the season and I think that from here correct idle plays we might be able to count on one hand you know from here until 40 at least and I think that's because people just start clocking it faster they and it doesn't help that people run their mouths that they have idols and that is something that Ben was not doing Ben kept his mouth shut until you know sitting there at tribal most of the time he shut his mouth at final five he actually keeps it quiet and does his whole bin bomb thing and that honestly is probably my favorite moment of the Season is that final five idle play but I think there's a lot of Merit to Ben's wi I think that you know especially watching it this time around when I was looking for something to latch one to because folks I was bored out of my [ __ ] mind today watching this

16:05 I was looking to something to latch one to and it's like wow Ben is actually playing really well Chrissy is a great villain and I feel and we can we can segue to with Chrissy here and based off of how Chrissy starts the game in the first episode with her throwing up after the CH oh my God Legend and her receiving the super Idol from Ryan another Super Idol that's not used I don't know why they keep trying to throw it at us we're never going to get it used nobody cares but Chrissy is able to survive and gain footing and I think there's a confessional in episode two where she says me and Ben are running this tribe and it was like and she had a bond with Ryan and that was it and Ben calls her out during the I think after the Joe Vote or it was one of those votes in the Middle where Ben calls her out because she always get over she gets overly pissed off when things don't go her way and I think that is something that works against her so what were your thoughts on Chrissy this season as a whole so let me let me say a couple things about this season I think you are in an unfortunate spot where you are exhausted from doing all of this and so things are a little difficult for you right now

17:27 However I actually think this is a very exciting season when it comes to like people actively being strategic it's not the best season of all time don't get me wrong I'm not crazy but at a certain point in the merge I mean JP is just there but I think that's almost really is just there that's almost comical I mean he's got the personality of a of a log a literal log that you should Chuck in the fire but to a certain extent everybody else is an interesting game player or is like really there are extremely interesting Dynamics I think at play throughout this entire season first of all it's like one of the early you know three tribes of six what do we see it in we see it in like from here we see it in like we see in the brains versus Beauty Seasons how often do we see it before it starts becoming you know a problem yeah this is still this is still kind of that era where yeah it's like okay every now and then we're going to do three but yes I think this is the last time until 41 yes exactly it won't really come back unless it's in a swap situation but for this

18:47 Specifically I think like there are really interesting people in power on each tribe to start off with you're like okay the mom and the Marine are working together that's nuts and they are the two in power that's also nuts that like Ryan and Devin start working together and they're in power and Lauren is also sort of been the power structure like very Dynamic ideas and then the healers tribe is like such a cluster [ __ ] and you don't know what's going on with them so look is every vote super exciting no is every vote like crazy interesting in the pre-emerge not really but I think the swap developed some interesting ideas and some interesting ideas of should we stick with the people that we have been working we have been on a tribe with or should we Blindside people that we've been working with because we know they're a threat down the line I think about the alley vote a lot in that situation where I think lesser players would just stick with somebody they've been on a tribe with the whole time and the merge I think is actually quite exciting like the merge onwards to me actually the most exciting vote is the JP vote because people are seeing the game board in front of them in this season constantly and saying this doesn't mean I'm going to the final three I need to change the game board and it doesn't always

20:08 Work for them but like people are always actively saying like is this going to win me the game no I think it needs to change which is more than some [ __ ] people do on Survivor and I agree and I'm not even [ __ ] on the gameplay this season I was talking to Alex who I've had on Amazon and caramon at this point and me and him you know we shot the [ __ ] for a while last night and we were I was just talking about how I was going to wake up and watch this season today and he brought up RoR and I remembered oh my God yeah RoR was on this season and then I woke up you know I watched the first episode last night and I realized this is the first season that I actually forgot certain people existed this time around like I'm looking at the cast and I'm like I have no idea who this person is and I sit here at 10:21 and I couldn't tell you what the Ginger's name is the second the I know there was the girl that gets voted out second I can't tell you what her name is R I know because it triggered something in my head but this cast and we're going to run into this problem tomorrow with ghost Island where the cast just becomes very forgettable and I hate saying it like that because you know these are people and you know but they are and it and

21:28 It took away from a lot of like pre- swap it just took away from a lot of it and like when the swap happens yes there is the whole Ryan kind of being conflicted on wh which way he wants to go and even the merge the most exciting part through the first three episodes of the merge is the spaghetti eating reward challenge the winner because of how every person navigates the idle clue on the plate that is fun and then you know Po and Chrissy fighting at the under the flag when Ryan has it in his pants that's a that's a good time but I think that's where I took my last nap of the day because it's like I'm so bored with everything that's going on and thankfully when I woke up it happened to be the JT the JP vote the JP vote out episode that I continued and I do agree I think that does that is where the season kind of pck picks up and it becomes go ahead oh I was just going to say you know I think that's a very interesting thing to say because I almost wonder if this season is more boring because Ben wins like that almost all of this strategy is in the end for not because we don't get to see if people reward Devin

22:48 Or Chrissy based on their gameplay it all just becomes down boils down to like this guy is really likable and he played a bunch of idols and he made it to the end like I wonder if this season is inherent obviously it's affected by the ending in terms of like whether or not we like it but in terms of excitement maybe it's not as exciting on a rewatch because we know it's all going to get washed away by the fire making and that's actually kind of how I felt about game changers yesterday where it's like yes what happens pre-merge happens and it sucks the air out of it and we hit the merge and I'm enjoying it but I know that sir is going to go home at 6 even though like she is running the show at that point and I mean I love Sarah's win I love Sarah's win but I feel like it's I won't call it a wet fart because I love her win but it's very it's not what I'm invested in for most of the season I don't really get invested to the Sarah win until Siri goes home because it's like yes Sarah is playing an amazing game I want her to win now going through the comments I do want to touch on this one because I disagree Chrissy was a better version of Cass I think Cass is a better version a better version of Chrissy I think Cass understood the game I feel

24:08 Like Cass was playing the game more strategically and was making moves and what it never she never came off as overly pissed off when things didn't go her way her whole thing was like that was their own little thing because Tony's an antagonist her thing with Trish only happened because Trish basically attacked her and you know Cass had to retaliate somehow Chrissy on the other hand you know there's a there's a moment where she's trying to bond with Lauren and Lauren's just like you know I didn't buy anything that she was actually saying Chrissy's the way it came off as fake at least how it was portrayed it came off as fake the way that Chrissy was trying to bond with Lauren and I know she gets called out on it a lot during about like how socially you know she came kind of came off as for lack of a better phrase like an ice queen I don't feel like that was the case with Cass I feel like yes people hated her because she's a woman and she's making strategic moves and Spencer of all people think she's playing stupidly even though she's not and Spencer is a [ __ ] but I prefer cast

25:29 As a player over Chrissy I love Chrissy still for other reasons but I love casses I prefer Cass so do you agree with that comparison it's an interesting take because I agree that like Chrissy has more jury respect however I think that Chrissy's social game is actually a lot weaker in ways because specifically watch the JP episode back they vote out JP and she's like can you guys explain why that happened and everyone's kind of not giving her any information and she will not shut the [ __ ] up Chrissy just keeps being like nobody wants to say why that happen and she's just sort of needling at it and it's like Chrissy girl if you want people to give you an answer take your closest Ally like Ben aside and be like Ben how do we talk about this we're like try and talk to Lauren or Ashley like the what I think that Chrissy has is Chrissy is and I say this with a lot of love for Chrissy she's a little bit of a Karen and I don't mean that in the way of like she wants her way and if she doesn't get it she doesn't get it but she's always a little bit like let me talk to your manager

29:29 What is what the runner up in 43 the G Cassidy there are so many people flying her when in like reality they were just looking for someone to beat gabler it's not like she was this otherworldly player or character that was like oh man I can't believe she didn't win it was more of a we need her to win because we don't want Gab a to win type thing at least for that's how I've always perceived it yeah and you know like so to me I think winners are always defined by how the end of Survivor shakes out right I think the end of Survivor is so tricky so tenuous and you really want to focus on like this is what's happening in the game and how did you have control over that to win so when you look at these last couple votes right let's like it starts from JP going out like JP goes out Chrissy is totally blindsided by that Joe goes out Chrissy is immune so she's not GNA go home she's also like immune for most of the later half of yeah the season so Joe gets voted out with

30:49 Ryan playing his Idol Ryan doesn't know what the [ __ ] is going on and Chrissy and Ryan vote for Ashley Lauren goes out on the Ben so Chrissy doesn't vote properly there Ashley goes home 5 to one because Ben sort of shows off his Idol and then you have the Devon casting the vote for Mike of it all which they vote for Ben again incorrectly and that's sort of where I think like Devon has that perfect move I think that it is a hands down perfect move to vote for Dr Mike and that's situation I don't think that Chrissy has any particularly perfect moves from the JP vote on that demonstrate that she has control more control over the game than Ben or Devin I do think Devon versus Chrissy would have been fun I completely agree with the idea that like it would have been a great final tribal to see those people go at it to see like Ryan try and scrap his way through but at the same time Chrissy doesn't have a lot of strategic footholds to advertise as like I climb to the top based on this and to be fair I think a lot of that has to do with the fact that they just let Ben find these

32:10 Idols and then Ben was able to usurp any plan that they had possibly created because it didn't [ __ ] matter because Ben had an idol because Ben had an idol yeah it's funny if Ben if Devon does make it Ryan doesn't get any votes because and we can we can talk about Ryan then I want to start talking about other things that happen this season Ryan czy Ryan's not a zero vote finalist that's just like crazy he has huge zero vote finalist energy Ryan annoyed the [ __ ] out of me this season and that wasn't he was another person that when I finally got on the inter the Survivor fandom and I realized that people also were not big fans of Ryan I'm like okay I can agree with you guys on that this time around was probably the my worst experience dealing with Ryan it just even from episode one it just came off as so I won't say fake but like the textbook scene is when Jeff is like it's like you're in a relationship and Ryan goes I've never been in a relationship Jeff it's like shut the [ __ ] up get the [ __ ] out of here like I don't that he you understand what Jeff is trying to say you don't have to say oh I've never been in I'm wholesome and wear a turtleneck like it's all good it's goofy it's goofy it's I

34:51 The villain in the season they have a lot of machismo or they have whatever and they can be villainous but they're going to go home at some point because they're not going to win and the thing about Ryan to me that makes him unappealing as a character is that I never look at the Young the young guy on Survivor who's like I'm a little self-conscious and feel that bad I feel more empathy for the man with PTSD and I kind of hate the I hate that my tax dollars go to fund US military functions you know what I mean like I feel more empathy for the person with PTSD than I could possibly feel for the guy who's like you know I'm skinny and I'm from New Jersey and I work for a republican the Republican party and I'm just like I feel nothing for you I don't care what happens to you and it's the same way where like you're not going to get a lot from me for somebody like Patrick or somebody like JP because I just see that person is already in such a winning position in life and that's probably like The Meta of you know it's like I pick Princess Leia when I'm playing Star Wars games things like that right where this is just who you either relate to or don't

36:11 Relate to and on the other side of the coin I find that Ryan does almost nothing to show that he's a good game player he does almost nothing to socially ingr ingratiate himself with anybody but Devin and Chris he's kind of with Ben by default but then of course Ben isn't really with him he just doesn't play a game where I even see him do like one or two really smart moves he just has to do the sort of difficult alley vote but the alley vote was a pretty smart move like or the alley vote was like a pretty self-explanatory move like vote out somebody beforehand was probably silly but like yeah I agree yeah that situation you kind of have to yeah and to me like I as badly as I want to give Ryan credit I just found no credit within this season and I think it's crazy that he's not a zero vote finalist and so and someone did say that they felt like Devon th ay vote I don't think that Devon th ay vote I think that Devin actually felt some type of attachment to Ryan yeah even though he got pissed off at Ryan for telling other people besides him that he had an idol but I do think that they had a fun little and you brought it up at the beginning

37:32 Of this that they had a fun little Duo at the beginning of the game so I don't I don't think that it was a Pity vote I think that he actually felt like he should voted for his friend Survivor yeah I feel like it's same way with Rodney voting for [ __ ] will and Worlds Apart they just had some type of camaraderie and Rodney's voting confessional even says like I hope that you win it's like what are you talking about doesn't have yeah I was say Rodney drinks his own pee so it's all it's all relative once again look it up go call back to the world Rodney doesn't have any c rery anymore because he doesn't have cheers than you so we talking about a lot of these other characters pre merge wise Allen is a lot of fun he's the Allan vot is the best vote of the pre-merge by far oh my goodness yes but Allan he doesn't outstay as welcome is my whole like he shown from episode one to just be like this overly paranoid player for some reason I think CTE and he you know he makes our boy JP strip
