Survivor Philippines Review

0:00 And welcome back to day 25 of Survivor 46 and 46 just finished watching Denise win Survivor Philippines and a season that you know I yes I sung the Praises of one world yesterday for it to be a it was really good compared to the seasons that had come right before it but Philippines is I feel like writes the ship for one season before tomorrow today I'm joined by Michael shaver who is a very large and very big Philippines fan and so shaer I just want to start with this when you first watched it to now has it gone up or gone down or is it always maintained that steady just I love this season I feel like I've always I've always just absolutely loved this season because mostly it got me back into loving Survivor because I was kind of out after like nicaragu Redemption island South Pacific one world I was kind of just done then I saw Penner was coming back to the season so I'm like okay I'll watch the season because he's one of my favorite players just like one of the best characters who's ever played Survivor and then as the season went on I'm like this is the show that I fell in love with and over time I've rewatched it I've lost count how many times I've rewatched

1:20 This season and to me it just gets better on a rewatch yeah go ahead as much as I've Loved i l the season I first saw it I feel like even since then I just loved it even more put this and token jein at like this time around but almost every time that I have done this as far as like I'll go and think okay yeah that was a good season and then I'll finish it and be like no that was actually better than just a fun season like that's this is good pal and I almost want to compare it so people like to Hype Micronesia up as the season of The Blind Side which is true it they perfected The Blind Side like Jeff said here I would say that almost mer every merge boot with the exception of maybe like no even the RC one was pretty I think Abby might have been the only like yeah okay that's fair the Abby one so every tribal counsil that we had at the merge was some type of Blindside and you really didn't know who was going home and I think that the two best episodes of this season specifically in the merge are the one where Penner wins immunity and the one where Abby wins immunity because the one where Abby WS the for me as someone that was not rooting for Abby at all this season I just kept saying wouldn't it be funny if

2:40 Abby just wins here and the title it kept that episode from being boring I'll give it that yeah because if she does win immunity she goes home on six1 vote absolutely and then I think it get it picks up afterwards because I think then with that six together I think I do think we get a bit of a different ending I do too and I do want to touch on that because I do feel like Abby winning kind of set the that end game to something that was totally different from what it could have been so we go back to the beginning mainly because we want to talk about the three rury players now I you know going through this I've always asked oh yeah you know of the people returning from this season who would you want to see or who were you most surprised to come back and I think Russell Swan's name did get brought up we I think scoop's name did brought up but we understood and then for Micronesia everyone loves Penner is one of maybe two to three pre-40 people that I would ever want to come back so I understood why all three of them were here did you get it did you feel like there were other people maybe some other metac or someone else that time was cut short that you felt like let's replace Russell Swan or scoopin or not Penner with them so no I think they picked

4:00 The perfect three people to come back I think they kind of Base this theme around finally getting scoin to come back all the way from season two and they're thinking let's get a couple other metab backs obviously Russell Swan was a huge metab back that was a big deal remember during Samoa because he almost nearly died out there died and then I feel like they were kind of looking for that third person to kind of put it together when they decided to do three tribes I had a heard some sort of rumor that maybe they were thinking of do Colton from one world the backlash was so bad before they had brought him out there filming that let's bring in pen yeah and I and I would say that I'm mostly agree with it you know I do feel like Penner more than the others you know is the even in Survivor history just to this point Penner is the biggest character of the three because you know scoopin was a big character on Australian Outback he falls into the fire and it's memorable forever Russell Swan almost dying during Samoa no one unless you're like a super fan one thing you remember about Samoa is some scumbag and then you have Penner who in both times did things that were you know whether it was him jumping ship in cook Island was be him being metac in a pretty good you he was doing really well up until that point in Micronesia I feel like he was the main

5:20 Of these three and we get right to it and we have two other celebrities we've got Jeff Kent and we've got Lisa Welch and I feel like they both played their roles very well this season I think that top to bottom with the exception of maybe a couple of Duds which is a stretch feel like this cast is amazing from Zane all the way to Denise so as you're watching the did you first of all did you know who Jeff Kent or Lisa Welter were when you first watched the season I knew who Jeff Kent was because I'm a really big baseball fan Jeff Ken's one of the best second Bas who's ever played baseball I did not know who Lisa Welch was my mom did though she knew Lea she did not know Jeff and so I we had the opposite going there and it's almost it's so funny that only one at least we're shown only one person recognizes Jeff Ken because I do feel like at that point Jeff Ken is probably the more famous of the two no matter how young or old the cast is because when I watched this I knew who both were because I'm a big baseball fan and also I loved Nick at Knight growing up so of course I knew who Lisa Welch was because Facts of Life was amazing I was surprised that at least from what we're shown that one person knows Jeff Kent and two people know Lisa and I do think that probably did I feel like that probably

6:41 Did help them early on the fact that the people that did know them were not trying to out them in that moment if you were you know if you were out there do you feel like you would have just talk Jeff Kent would you have told or would you have been like oh no Jeff Kent or would you have like gone to Jeff and say hey I know who you are I would went je I would have went to Jeff pulled Jeff aside and talked to him to see if he would say like be straight up about it and if he wasn't I would try to kind of like hide it but like I feel like at that point he might know that I know but also I that's his business I wouldn't go out there trying to spread it especially because like it could work for me it could work against me I'm like it's best better left just unsaid but I think I would definitely have pulled him aside to try to feel him out and if not just tell him that I know and be like I'm not I'm not saying a word to anybody but I just want you to know that I do know and it's so funny comparing this to West nail talking to John Rocker Seasons later and he's like no I'm John Wetland who is another former baseball player and just it didn't make any sense John Rocker but we'll get there I think Sunday or Monday so you know we have these three tribes and I think that one of the Testaments to a good season at least for me is if I can sit there and actually know the tribe names post like season eight and I feel like all three of these

8:01 Tribes have very distinct personalities the tribes themselves are characters this season because the car crash tribe isn't even Matt Singh like they're L not the tribe that's it's tandang that it's like okay yes we need to see what's going on here because ab's crazy and we'll talk about that a little later but let's just get Matt thinging out of the way why does God hate Russell Swan go H he must have done something bad in a previous life this guy just can't catch a break all he did the first time was win and then what had what happened to him when he got Medevac and then comes back this season he can't do a damn thing every everything he does is wrong you can't find the idol you can't make fire you can't win a damn challenge like any anything and everything he did was just wrong whether he meant it or not it just did not work out for him and there was really nothing anyone like or his tribemates or the audience could do but sit there and be like oh my God yeah this is not sad to be honest it really was it was sad the first couple of times I watched this season now I just kind of laugh at it because there are a lot of things like the only time that I feel bad for him is his boot episode where him and Denise are talking and he's that was

9:21 Rough that was it was very rough and I and I did feel for him in that moment so I that aside it just became a of Errors you know with him having Angie do the puzzle even though she's saying I can't do puzzles and again everything he did was bad everything that he did was and he you know he has this confessional where he's like everyone's probably laughing at me at home as I look for the idol it's like yeah they Flash the idol on the screen flashy yep he's narrating us laughing at him and we have you know we have Angie who you know with the iconic cookies line do we feel like there was something cut out there or do you think that they went bang hey what do we need and she just says cookies I think that was all natural okay what Russell say oh she's got this boob thing going on don't get blinded by the headlights but Zay Knight Zay Knight and oh yep there we go Zay Knight possibly the most iconic first boot in the history of the show until galencia showed up this past season I get what Zayn was doing I understand it I think he came on a little too strong when he probably should have backed

10:41 Up after he said so what did you think of his strategy and do you think there was a way for him to utilize that strategy where he actually stays I think if he executed it a little better he might have the problem was he was just so messy and I feel like he didn't really think about what he was doing and he just went and did it and I think that was his problem and I honestly he's such a fun and that's what I keep saying this cast is so fun and I think I really wish he had more time out there I really do me too but he plays his role so well this season that I almost glad that he didn't because then we wouldn't get certain situations but you know I obviously I would love more zame night we go to we'll go to calbel next and we have sco not scooping Penner and we've got Jeff Kent and no one trusts Penner that the calbal tribe more than any other tribe at this point are saying we don't want another one of you know any of these people to win because it's not fair they've already played go ahead and that was led by Jeff Kent led by Jeff Ken and you know I can't want to say scooping I have scooping on the Mind sadly Penner finds the and Jeff Kent immediately makes an alliance with them and I think it was like one of these strange bed fellows moments I don't think that they ever thought they were that tight

12:01 And somewhere in the mix there is Carter who I kept trying to compare him to CGI Brett and my head but it's not like Carter is not CG I bre Carter is a meme Carter is a m i feel when you had you had mentioned maybe like a couple of quote unquote Duds I think Carter is one of those quote unquote Duds I see as much I don't think he was bad but just compared to the cast that was around him he was definitely a lot lower than like oh penners the Jeffs the malcolms the Denise's the abies the scoopin the Lisas yes I do agree with that point I he got toned down just because who he was around but I do think that's where he kind of gets the dud label from when I was thinking dud I was thinking Roxy and Angie and you still kind of remember them though that's fair yes I feel like people down the line with Philippines they don't remember Carter that's fair and I do feel like the only thing like this time around it's like okay Carter oh yeah he gets both bags for of rice and beans at the at the auction and he gets the legs for them to eat in a minute and the manicure thing and no it was the pedicure thing whatever it was and obviously the moment where Penner says so what's going on

13:22 He almost slips up and says oh yeah it's this person or Penner I mean it's this person or this person and like the way it's edited it shows Jeff Kent look up like what the hell are you doing and then of course we get to tandang and tandang they are the character of the Season like that tribe is that they run the pre oh not the pre oh yeah yes they do run the pre- merge they run the first what vote of the merge two vot and the first rc and then Jeff K yeah and then yeah because Plan B it falls part right after Jeff go right after Jeff K leaves all time where are we put in tandang just in terms of because right now I have them with casaya because this tribe they're up in that casaya territory like just there's so much going on there for a tribe that never lost the dysfunction and the issues and the just chaos that came out of that tribe was so fun to watch that's why they got as much screen time as they did normally tribes that win that much don't get shown very often I like every time you finish the challenge before the challenge tandang what's tandang doing what's Abby doing now why is she yelling at RC this time what did scoop and cut himself on now and I like this time around artist was my proxy

14:42 Like I just kept trying to watch it through artist's eyes because even though he doesn't get much screen time he gets more PR screen time pre merge than he does at merge but it's like every comment I'm just like yeah that's pretty much where I would say what I would say during among these Looney Tunes that we have here I'm just going to sit back and I'm going to get pissed off that you guys made a horrible trade during that challenge I they didn't put that much thought into it especially with the amount of rice that they ended up getting you know I know that he keeps getting lumped in with Pete and Abby I don't think that he was I don't think that he was necessarily with them it's just that he wasn't with scoopin because he hated him and he really wasn't with Lisa but I don't think that he had any type of like real ill will towards her but artist is go ahead I feel artist was kind of like the middle like the grounded middleman on that tribe like he didn't really like being with anybody but he was kind of like okay I could kind of take being around Pete and Abby a little more so I'm gonna lean more with them but I feel like if he had the opportunity to go somewhere else he absolutely would have went somewhere else absolutely he was definitely the Fall Guy when he ended up going yeah and so we have

16:02 We have this RC Abby friendship turned rivalry one-sided rivalry that apparently lasts to this day where RC and Abby make their deal Abby says if you screw you know with me you're dead yeah oh yeah with me you're dead Jesus I tweeted that out earlier and I already forgot it that's one of the best lines ever and Pete who in my opinion one of the best underrated villains that we have gotten and all he really does is just light a match he just finds the idle clue and he plans it's the name it's the name of that episode created a little chaos all he did was just slip the idle clue in and then and Abby loses her mind and I think that you know even at the merge where Pete is saying oh yeah you know it's it's he thinks that he's the one running the show he's The Mastermind it's like okay yeah this is the type of villain that I can not support but I can have fun watching because when they inevitably lose it feels better and I feel like Abby was the same way now obviously the first time I watched this season I hated Abby with like every ounce of my being and every other time I've watched the season since then it's like no Abby is just a fun villain

17:23 Who just because she's so antagonistic but comes from like that person in that small very attractive frame it very it comes off hilarious on a rewatch and especially when you get the Cambodia appearance with everything with PG and her calling Joe angam a clown I finally started to understand Abby Maria the second and third times so what are your thoughts on that the Abby RC just Fiasco just everything about it I think obviously Abby overreacted to everything that was going on like she needed she needed to learn to try to keep her cool I think that's something still present if Abby ever went back on Survivor still needs to learn how to do because she clearly did not learn that going into Cambodia but I feel like just looking back on it now I really don't think there was much RC could have done because she really didn't do much of anything that was Pete who kind of blew that up onor but I think abish needs to learn to C need to learn to kind of control her emotions keep everything in check don't irrationally lash out and lose an ally for no reason just talk some stuff out and I feel like that's something if she could pick that up she might have done better this season I really believe that well and the problem is Optics wise this time around

18:43 I actually understood where Abby was coming from because if you think that these two are the only that you and her are the only two people that know about this and all of a sudden you see it in her bag I would probably act a certain way as I would act to the extent that she did but if we know that we're only two and I know that I didn't do it yes RC would become very sus to me because it looks like you against what we had going on I totally understand that and I'm fully on board with that the issue is again like I had mentioned with zaye earlier like the execution needs to be better if you're gonna be that upset about it hide it pull her aside and talk to her one-on-one don't scream and yell at her and isolate her from the whole tribe and Abby had already found the idol by that point exactly so she was ling up for what it didn't matter if Abby was SM she could have tried to paint that as oh RC has the idol if she really didn't want to work with her again after that try to paint the Target on her back while the Idol's sitting in your pocket yeah Abby didn't understand as I know it's very I don't feel like Abby understood the social part of the game because think she does immediately just I will not talk to at all like R's trying to explain herself and Abby's like no complet

20:04 Reaction we don't talk and so everything comes to a head you know well first you know we get Malcolm and Denise going off to do their things with the other tribes but everything comes to aead at the merge and I think this is where the season I won't say it picks up because I think the pre merge is a lot of fun it just it gets it gets into another gear yeah it jumps into a different gear and we start with the RC vote and then it everything we're going you know Lisa tells about Malcolm after she accidentally finds the idol you know what Malcolm says what the estrogen kicked in which was really weird Malcolm the estren kicked in and she ended up doing laundry and found the idol and in my head and I said this yesterday where I felt like the One World final three is probably the best final three that we're gonna get until maybe DAV vers Goliath maybe earlier but who I had on yesterday they both said no the Philippines final 3 is actually good and I realized that I let future things cloud my judgment about the Philippines final 3 because Philippines final 3 is three it's not just Lisa versus

21:24 Denise it's scoopin actually did very well this season and today you know listening to his speech today where he's talking about you know my name did come up a lot early yeah it didn't come up as much as he was trying to make it up to be but like his name did come up and he was able to avoid it the fact that they came into this game they want to get rid of all of the rures and the fact that he still sat at the end I feel like was a big step the fact that he was able to solidify a final four and have you know his you know his thing with Lisa as well I do feel like carried wise Lisa probably carried him whatever that means but I do feel like scoopin played a very good game and the Australian Outback finale always surprises me I don't who says it but they're like if scoop and hadn't fell on the fire he probably would be would be sitting at the end now it's like okay whatever watching it this time like watching him play this time around yeah he's a little rough around the edges end game but I understood where he was coming from with a lot of stuff that he was doing do you feel like this for you and I know you're kind of biased because this is your season is this

22:44 The or top three greatest final threes of all time top three I'd have to I'd have to think about that I'm not really sure I'd put it up there because like as good as we talking about how good sco's game was I still think he's the clear three out of that three like I never truly thought going to that final job he had a chance to win I thought most mostly like 70% chance was gonna be Denise and like 25% was gonna be Lisa so I don't know if I would really put it up on that level but I do think it's in the upper like I'd say top 10 yeah maybe top five it's something I would personally probably have to think about no and I that's and that's fair and I kind of just put you on the spot with that I'm sorry but it's very it's another thing with these rewatches where it's like you realize oh man like this I have this horrible perception of what this final three actually was and it's not Lisa versus Denise it's all three of them going up against each other with yes scoopin probably being the zero vote finalist but he even he gets a vote yeah he gets a v he gets Carter's vote which was weird so what is it about scoop's game this season do you feel you know I won't say warranted him S

24:04 At the wi end because a lot of stuff has to happen for that to happen but how did you how did you enjoy or not enjoy him navigating this game you know as a rury on a season where everyone wants rury is gone well it's definitely interesting if you look back to some of the seasons that have mostly new players but like maybe a handful of like two or three returning players normally a returning player gets at the end of the game whether be Mala Redemption island South Pacific this season I think Ed Extinction is the only one that the only one that yeah the only one that does that doesn't have it in so if you kind of look at it from that lens somebody's going to get to the end and I think scoin did play the best game out of the three of them to be able to get be able to sit himself at the end at the same time just trying to navigate like I think that returning player Thing Once Jeff and artist kind of left it was those two clear sides I think that we don't want returning players when kind of went out the window yeah because then it became the T D versus everyone else yeah I don't think Penner was voted out because he was his retur player pen got voted out because he was the biggest threat left in the game yes and Abby had immunity yeah but I don't think SC scoin getting to the end as this returning player would have been impressive if the game ended at final 10 but considering we had about 15 more days left I while it's still impressive I don't think he would get he does get

25:24 As much credit for that towards the end of the game as he would for kind of like the beginning or the middle of the game if you had said that at that point yeah and I agree and going back you know you saying that you think that scoin played the best of the three pet was way more antagonistic this season that he had been in the P not like I won't say he was an straight up antagonist this season and I do understand because his back was against the wall he kind of had to that's kind of where I put it more because he didn't really have this chance to integrate himself in they were kind of like they ice even cabal the beginning iced him out early wasn't until he found the is where Carter and Jeff kind of took him in and then the second of the merge H they iced him back out again until they ended up meeting him later yeah like he never really the only time he really had that chance to kind of integrate himself in was when scoin and Lisa went to him for the with the forers alliance after artist left he stupidly says no to it yeah that was I'm sure we'll probably get to in a little bit but like yeah just a lot of I mean I love Penner this season like I will always love Jonathan Penner but just even like his speech against Lisa at final tribal I'm like wow there was some betterness there yeah and him implying that Denise was a it's like okay I you more than anyone here should

26:45 Understand at this point because this is your third time playing and he've sat on the jury one other time and when you went out you understood what it was you are the threat and we couldn't get rid of Abby so it was just a it was a weird it was weird watching at this time seeing okay yeah this is I love Penner but this was weird this was it was a weird and a lot of the decisions that he made you brought up you know oh I'll think about it or whatever however he phrased it or just straight up shutting it down do you think and we're gonna we're gonna touch on this right now if Abby loses at that final seven immunity Challenge and let's say we do get rid of Abby there because I think that there's no way that she's even going to try to scramble she's she'd lay down and die and I think the rest of them would be so sick of her like they wouldn't even try to think oh maybe better move we got rid of pen maybe better move we got rid of Malcolm they would just be like get her out of here and then we'll worry about tomorrow and I always say I try to avoid fantasy booking this thing but like final six becomes even more compelling at that point because Penner is now in the six spot MH and we can do a whole bunch where do you see that game going at final six if you

28:05 Replace Penner or with pen yeah so H correct me if I'm wrong I believe Malcolm won that final six immunity I believe so three hours ago that so like that probably still H he probably still wins that challenge I'm not gonna say Panner is going to beat him there I think at that point if penner's really thinking long term about the game he would try to get Lisa and scoopin to try to vote Denise out right there so but would it work I'm not really sure if that would work because they already had their four person line them and scuba was kind of big on not wanting to turn on that which was which was the reason they didn't vote out Denise at five yeah and I in the long run I could see it really not much changing there because I think if Abby goes at seven Panner could go at six I think the only wrench would be if Carter would win immunity at five because he was a pretty big immunity threat you can't rule out the chances of him winning his way to the end I don't think he would have won the game if he had gotten to the end but I so I used to feel like that too and watching it this time around everyone loves Carter everyone loves Carter and to the point where even though Penner you know voted in the minority the round that he gets voted out Carter is not the only person

29:25 That votes with him and he's the only person that he hugs and when Abby says can I have a hug and Pet's like I you know no one else is going to get a hug for me well true but he was also with Carter for 30 something days that and that's fair we do have a question how do you think Jonathan handled Lisa's offer to work with her Alliance yeah you can take the Reigns on that I think I honestly that probably lost pen of the game if he takes her up on that offer when he she offers it to him Pete probably still goes at eight we'll go into this realm now Denise probably goes at seven with Abby with immunity yeah they're just vote Denise because they know Malcolm as the idol I don't think they would have risked taking a shot at him at that point and then I think the end game definitely changed like six I Abby probably goes at six I think the only wrench in the plan would be if Malcolm won immunity at five because he definitely wasn't winning it at four he got two chances remember if he didn't win immunity at five he had the idol that's fair yes last Malcolm's probably cting at four regardless it's just going to be who's the other three with him yes at that point like is p is there a chance Pan's at four absolutely and then with

30:45 That four whoever's in that four Malcolm still goes at four because he is the clear Uber Mega threat at that point you got to get rid of him or he's going to win the game and that's where I kind of think like he at least would had give himself a chance if he had accepted that offer instead of Shug shrugging it off declining it ah I'm good like you don't say no to alliances in the game of Survivor even if you don't mean it you can't just straight up say no if someone offers you an alliance you take it and then you think about it and then you go from there it's crazy that his biggest blunder through three seasons happens in his last season because he is always shown to be calculated smart about things even the reason he steps off after Candace and Cook Islands the rationale kind of makes sense I disagree with it but it makes sense you know a lot of him in Micronesia you know trying to convince sir like hey you need to come with us don't go with them and you know even though yeah he's basically saying the exact same thing that parvy and them are saying for this to happen in his third season was weird and once again I love Jonathan penard so feels weird even saying it like this time but it's true so we get past we get

32:05 Past penner's probable swan song we'll talk about that at the end of the episode as far as if probable will actually stay the lighting on tribal this season is that has that always been weird to you like it's I don't know it always looks so dark for just with this and like gabone didn't say there was much they didn't have as much fire there as they do in like other Seasons but okay that's I know I don't know I kind of like it to be honest it makes it look different it yeah it's it makes it look different it makes it stand out and there's a lot of things in this season that stand out you know we already talked about how the tribes themselves are characters and we've talked about how the cast you know almost from top to bottom our characters the blind sides the winner we you know we really haven't touched on Denise much so far but you know she goes to every single time and probably only was in danger during maybe like the two calbal votes like is there another time where it's like okay like Denise might actually be screwed here I think the I think the one the she's biggest in danger was final five at final five yes yeah that's fair that's fair

33:25 Like even the two times went to tribal during calbal like I don't think she was in any danger on E either of those they're like I remember Penner even talked about before they went to the first of cabal tribal with Denise there like you don't sorry so go ahead she's the she was the strongest of the three women they definitely seem like that was kind of what it was gonna they were GNA try to base their vote on because the three guys were working together so like she was never really in consideration to go home even though I know Dawson ended up voting for her that night that's was kind of more of I know I'm going home was going to throw my vote or whatever the hell lie they probably told her I think the only time she was ever like she probably should have went home was final five and the only reason she didn't go then was because scoin refused to turn on that Alliance good for he was ready to leave Lisa hung out to dry too with that I want to touch on this comment because I do disagree but Philippines is like palao never show this to a new viewer or Survivor will seem slow and I completely disagree I can only appreciate this season if you're already a fan that values story rather than episode entertainment so I think I might disagree for a different reason than you do my reasoning is palow is very boring after the first time you watch it because the I don't know the shine of

34:45 Watching a tribe lose every member kind of goes away after you watch it again it's like oh yeah this is just actually boring now because we know what's going to happen and there are no real fun characters on this on ulong they spend time with Stephanie Bobby JN and James but James sucks Stephanie is fine whatever Bobby John is actually a lot of fun but like palow just becomes such a slog and then when it hits the merge oh yeah merge Karen sucks and Tom gaslighting Ian at final three are like the really the only things that stand out to me and especially this time around pal drops so far for me because it was it was boring Philippines is one of those like I said it's like token jeans where it's like yeah it's good and then I'll watch it like no this is actually very good great I so I disagree with for that reason I'm assuming you have a different reason though no mine's suen to the same reason like palow when I rank it I try to remember as I watched it the first time because obviously like if you the more times you rewatch it the more boring it gets I have that argum with her verus villains also but with Philippines like there's really not that boring of an episode here
