The Amazing Race 35: Episode 5 Review

1:32 Here on the channel as well which we're very fortunate to have you for both I still haven't even had the opportunity to watch the Australian version because I've just been swamped like I'm struggling I'm struggling just to watch the shows that I'm covering at the moment to be honest with you so like any free time I have is like sleeping recovering getting ready for the next week free time what are you talking about as you know as some of the viewers know I was filming CD Survivor 2 last weekend so I wasn't in it because I was in one but I was filming for two great cast obviously I helped with casting but then this weekend I'm doing a race on Sunday with my daughter which is sort of a Loosely based Amazing Race so yeah it's just and then Survivor UK starts Saturday morning here like at 83 ridiculous time like come on Plus on top of all of that Big R fan Survivor not Survivor South Africa is in the final for the Rugby World Cup playing New Zealand this weekend as well so it's a 5:30 a.m.

2:38 Start for me on Sunday morning to watch that so it's going to be it's going to be a busy week and I'm going out on the Saturday evening you know I'm finally going out and exploring a bit of Melbourne you got to hit the Melbourne scene at night time so busy weekend ahead looking forward to it but let's say hello to our very loyal listener who is finally on time right here on the channel she's back made it we go Michelle I didn't get an opportunity to talk to you about last week's episode at all I spoke to your fellow previous podcast co-host Logan here on the channel it was a lot of fun he is truly an encyclopedia of knowledge when it comes to the Amazing Race yeah so that was that was good to tap into but what's your thoughts on how things turn out with seeing Victor and Joselyn go so early sad did you know that were one of my saes and they went out and I because I didn't watch it obviously and I was trying not to see who went out but I saw all these posts saying hate who went out sad for the people who left I'm like oh God who is it because all the posts were sad and I'm like no it's not it's not yeah if I saw that posts and if I was on social and I had time to engage I probably would

3:58 Have thought that's Team Pink because I mean who's more lovable than Team Pink this season you know like they are the team that brings the smiles and what a Powerhouse Andrea has proven to be in the last two weeks like I mean if you could link Andrea up with annaly I feel like they would win the season there would be no one to them because they would be a Powerhouse team but they did so well this episode like amazing yeah both teams both teams but I feel like anal is she's kind of carrying her team at this point and I feel like Andrea is carrying their team at the moment so that's why if you get the best of the two halves coming together but I have to give credit also to analie's Dad like he is keeping up with a people that are probably like half his age I know and you know what there isn't a lot of running there was a bit of running at the beginning of this episode with the sugarcane and going uphill but you know the race tends to have a bit of running like to the mat or here and there but you know generally you can do a fast walk and everyone's sort of very similar in their fast walks anyway like going through a market or going through a mosque or wherever they have to go so yeah he's and he's knowledgeable so that obviously helps Sandy

5:18 Welcome to the live as well saying oh hi Chris and Michelle giving us the pink hand wave Emoji as well welcome back to the live as well Sandy so we start off this race in Vietnam that's where they've been for the last couple of legs and they're on their way to India to the pink City jur I think I'm probably not pronouncing that right jer so it's got 22 official languages and 1.5 billion people insane numbers I know and the biggest democracy in the world I love that it's a democracy how do you get a 1.5 billion people to agree on anything like I just don't know how I mean it's hard enough in a country like where it's like what we've got like between 20 and 30 million 1.5 billion people can you imagine having to like be in charge of the electorate when they vote you know what generally I know quite a few Indians and Sri Lankans and they're just beautiful genuine people you know obviously you can get you know the scammers that come from India obviously but they're just so lovely kind genuine people and if you've got a whole lot of billion of them it may be easier to run that democracy than somewhere like Australia where we're all like getting at each other

6:39 I feel like the bigger the country the harder it is to control to be honest like I feel like it just comes with the numbers it's one of the reasons why when I lived in New Zealand for such a long time crimes at an alltime low civil unrest is at an all-time low and then when you the bigger the country gets the more it's difficult it's difficult to keep control of that so and obviously you can see by with India like clearly there's you know it's I hate using this term because it's almost derogatory but it's a like I say this South Africa is a third world country India kind of in a lot of ways with the infrastructure comes across us that way as well but that's also a lot of the time you know it's funny when you travel to these countries that's where the culture is at its peak that is where people yeah people just ban together because there's like a lot of things that don't work with government a lot of things that just they don't have the same services or healthare or things like other First World countries would have and they just sort of come together and I think that's where you see that beautiful spirit with people who come from countries like that such as what you just mentioned totally agree totally agree yeah so what a what a beautiful place for them to go to this whole episode I love what I love about India personally is the culture all of the different colors you know the art things

7:59 Like that it's it just stands out it is unique to India like very excited this year because Amazing Race Australia has just been to India it started in India a show here called Rush had an Indian episode so gosh we I'm just loving it because you know I missed Amazing Race us going to India we haven't been for a while and I love that they get back there and then the Australians are there and then we had the other show there and I'm like when I saw it when I watched this episode I'm like Oh India yes yay we're going there again yeah it's so exciting to see it let's say hello to Logan here in the comment section saying Kelly has literally one in a billion because India has over a billion people Michael Scott from the office and then also says when I was in India we were banned from visiting certain spots in Delhi because of the Citywide protests jaur amber Palace was used as a route marker in season one of The Amazing Race us I didn't know that did you know that Michelle no but I was about to say that one of my favorite episodes of Amazing Race Australia was actually one of the challenges was in the panina kund if I'm saying that correctly where all those St stairs

9:19 Were so I'll get to that later but I saw that and I went yes but then they didn't do the challenge that Australia did but oh gosh love it love it I mean I haven't been to India but I'd love to go one day yeah same hopefully we get to go there one day if we compete on The Amazing Race you know that would be a lot of fun but obviously one of the things that sort of was interesting here early on in the race is that typical old school Amazing Race we get people going to the airport they all are huddled back together and it's square one everybody is starting at the same place paor Robin and Chelsea they just got into first place in the previous round with the likes of you know we just spoke about them and Steve you know they were right up there in the front but this really doesn't mean all that much they have to start from the bottom again or start at an equal footing going into the race do you like it or do you not like the fact that there was maybe not more options for them to get onto planes well considering they left and I think the margin between the first and the last team to leave was around half an hour I think it was like half an hour so that's not a lot to be able to get different flights so what I think they should have done was start them off at Jer airport in you know the first to

10:39 The last timings because then it at least would have made some sort of effect when they started racing again I think it should have started from when they got off the plane yeah I agree I think that there has to be like some sort of meaning towards getting first second third and I've got a really big opinion about that with the potential U-turn coming up in next episode as well I've got some thoughts that I'll share when we get to the end of the episode but interesting to see them all sort of get back together having to get into the Rick Shaws really funny seeing analie not knowing what a Rick Shaw is in this episode and it really shows that she has probably not traveled all that much which makes it even more amazing that her and her dad are finding a way to be so effective navigating and through these challenges as two people who probably haven't really been exposed to a lot of other cultures or other countries yes I mean I knew what a before I went to Asia I knew what a Rick Shaw was from watching things on TV and documentaries and stuff like that so obviously she doesn't watch any of that and isn't worldly in that respect so when she said what's a rich I'm like it's just right there it's there just on it Sandy here say as much

11:59 As I love Thailand Vietnam and India leaks are kind of disappointed they didn't visit other countries new or underused in Asia it's a good point I mean there is a few more places they could go to they probably went for the trid and tested because it's the first time that they're able to go to places again and the one thing that has happened over the years and I think Logan spoke about that a little bit in the previous podcast that we did here on the channel he said that the budget has gotten significantly less for The Amazing Race when they do these Seasons so maybe that also comes into play when they choose where to go and how they're going to go like compared to maybe going to places that aren't as well traveled maybe it's a little bit more expensive if you go off the bedden track right Michelle yeah and if they already have connections they I mean Bertram and Elise have connections in a lot of different countries now and it's probably easier when you have the connections what anal is a professional travel vlogger how the hell doesn't she know what a rick Shore is then yeahor she's lost all credibility Sor I still I still like her I like her competitive Spirit but yeah I like I like how competitive she is but seriously how can you be a travel vlogger when you don't know what a rick show is what else doesn't she know yeah she's losing all of her sponsors after this specific

13:19 Episode they're like clearly she doesn't really travel clearly she's just AZ at Photoshop and she's you know basically photoshopping herself into all of these places that she's been to but yeah it was it was a lot of fun seeing them in the rck shores driving seeing Todd and Ashley and the likes of Team Pink Andrea and Melena yes like having the banter joking around and even like that those are my two favorite teams probably like when it comes to like personality and just bringing a lot of fun to the show like it brought a smile to my face to see their them interacting in such a way when they were on their way to the Amber Palace yeah in the cabs it was it was cool they were in cabs weren't they CU they put the window up and down yeah I think it was cabs at that stage yeah it was it was a lot of fun and what did you think of the Amber Palace out of redstone I love that there were elephants there I mean there's a lot of contentious thoughts about elephants being places but oh gosh I love that the elephants there and that they were excited about seeing the elephants as well I love that they were up the top you know with the mahoot you know to receive the sugar cane I don't I don't know how heavy sugar cane is I think heavy

14:39 From memory I have so you get you get a lot of sugar cane in South Africa around the eastern part of the country where Durban is within guazu natal so because of that I've got experience with having eaten sugar cane it's not heavy at all I guess there was a few it was a whole bundle it was a whole bundle together so it would have weighed a little bit I guess but yeah I think I can't believe my mother let me just gave me some sugar cane I was literally knowing sugar and eating it you know I love my parents they're just gave me anything yeah chaos absolute chaos if you give your kids sugar like that probably because it kept you busy you know like these days you can give them technology that back then it was like have some sugar and go play outside it took us forever to get through the little bit of sugarcane I don't know I think I might had about that much but it was like kny through it I love I love the Amber Palace I love how like it was massive that scene with them driving up to the Amber Palace and you see it up on the hill was pretty awesome you know seeing it through the TV I can imagine just being there it would have been breathtaking to see this architecture that you just know you know would have taken so long for them to B and to put it

15:59 Together it's one of those almost like a like a hidden wonder you know when you go up to it looked really impressive and it was a big a really big building because they had to run up like you said up in this hill which a lot of people struggled analie was pushing her dad up that hill man she was like you got to stay with me come you we're pushing these teams ahead of us you know that's where the competitive Spirit came up and I'm like I'm constantly feeling like he's going to faint in these episodes because he's constantly sweating and like trying to keep up with her but that's okay you know there's some you know it even if you're older it doesn't mean you're going to faint or drop dead some people even though they sweat and you know it's hard as Aussie say hard yaka to do certain things I think he's quite capable I think it's just hard yeah let's have a look here Logan says it's a really good thing they didn't make teams ride the elephants this time around oh yes beram and Elise have finally caught up that elephants aren't super what that it's not a super ethical practice then also said apparently elephants really stresses out even when touched by humans most places in Southeast Asia ban even hands on elephants Wasing now I had no idea myself until a few years ago and yeah I've I've been in the position where I've been up front with an elephant in South

17:19 Africa where I've been able to touch and all those kind of things but it's also before a lot of sort of the awareness came out there that it's not always a good thing I mean it's a it's a wild animal and you know we I don't think we're supposed to be in a situation where we're riding them or we're that close to them so it's not great but it's still beautiful to see and it's like that's where you've got it's almost like Bittersweet when you see elephants on our screen on The Amazing Race now and it's a big part this is the thing that people don't understand it's also a big part of the Indian culture right so for them it's like they don't look at it through the same length as us in the western world oh yeah definitely I mean it's very cultural with anything in any country that is featured on the race the Australian episode this week there was a post in the American fan group that was having a go at the way that fish is displayed in Asia I'm trying to think were they in Cambodia still or had they moved on and you know they display it out in the open sometimes the fish is still alive it's immersed in a little bit of water and she was basically saying I don't want to see a fish die before my

18:39 Eyes and then all these people were going back to her saying well you've got to realize these are different cultures things are different in different places around the world you have to accept that and it's not as though they're trying to be uncaring about what they're selling or you know trying to make a living out of but she was just taken down by these people who are obviously Travelers and understand about the world and she just yeah she had a hard time there's a there's a high element there's a high element of people that feel like morally they've been successful or have done something of significance when they voice their concerns online you know and they're like by me voicing this now I feel good I've had my say that this is very unethical that is happening over here and I just want to get that off my chest cuz now I'm a good person for doing that and that's sometimes something that I also find strange you know and sometimes it backfires sometimes it can backfire and it's like you said it's culturally very different like I know even in South Africa there's like if you were to go there and you're not used to the African culture you're going to be in for a culture shock because a lot of things that the Western culture wouldn't agree with happens there on a daily basis you know

19:59 So the fact that elephants you know maybe are scared or petrified in that moment who knows if that's a true statement you know how you handle the elephant as long as because that's I think where the big problem has come in that a lot of people who are like handlers of the elephants they mistreat them to make them obedient and that's not good right that's definitely not good I'm I don't condone that the one that I know the Safari that I went to in South Africa they were very big on ethically handling the elephants and not mistreating them and things like that so they were guaranteeing people that they were doing that so but any case always a touchy subject but you know beautiful to see they do go in here and they have got to do a roadblock which is basically performing a dance with pots on their head and this again like I didn't realize how similar this is to Africa where you see you know African ladies with big buckets on their head of water or balancing things on the head like we've seen it before in the race as well obviously as well I grew up seeing it but it's kind of if you've got that skill set it's probably going to come in pretty handy but I tell you what I would have been really who's got a skill set at balancing stuff on their head no one unless you in India or Africa you don't have that skill my dad

21:20 My dad could dance with a scotch a full Scotch tumbler of scotch on his head he used to do used to do it really at the end of the night but he wouldn't spill the scotch so I think he'd be great at that challenge I can't believe the girls were holding six pots but the really good ones could hold nine and they were only told to hold three absolutely insane like I would have you know the problem is the way that the clue read it was something about balance and if I saw that I would feeling balanced yeah who's feeling balanced so if me and you were running up to that and we saw it my background in karate it's all core based it's all balance based I'd be like got it's a balancing thing and then as soon as I get out there and realize I have to balance something on my head I would have been hating myself and you've got to dance while balancing so I was feeling the pain with Corey being out there but I would like to believe I would have had a bit more Rhythm than him because you know there's a few guys there that had zero Rhythm you know but it looked very difficult to do so again Anna just going in and busting it out maybe learning the routine within like I don't know a minute or two and then deciding to just go

22:40 And do it before there's a line that she has to wait for turned to be turned out to be a really good move by her and she's away so early and now becomes a big Target for other teams moving forward they're like well anal and Steve they're starting to dominate this thing we may need to take a shot at them as soon as that U-turn comes up h exactly they oh just I was thinking maybe they will be targeted next episode it's a it's a secret U-turn silent U-turn what was it what did he call it so they're always good ones because you can just get anybody and you won't get the retaliation so yeah can't wait to see who does who yeah definitely while we're talking about the uturn we might as well bring it up now I had to think about it I'm glad the U-turn is back but I don't like the fact that we can vote for anyone to be u-turned because it heavily leans towards the teams that are not doing good targeting a team that is very good at the game like in this case Steven anley might be that team because they're very consistent I don't necessarily like it I like the U-turn where you've got a race to a point and that if you're ahead of people they can't U-turn you that to me seems not one of those well it sounded like it's they were going to do a vote they were oh vote Oh

30:41 Have a fun time is good yeah so Logan here says yeah there was like a small hallway es area where the guru was chilling he was he was just sitting on the ground telling everyone to go away sounds like a fun job sometimes I feel like at work I just need to be able to say to people go away like today when they were coming at me all the time and I was like you know what I had my day planned out so perfectly Michelle I was like cool I've got finally I've got less meetings today I can get through a lot of work and then people just started pulling me into meetings that I was not aware of prior to it just got pull yeah I know I was just feeling like saying Go away you know I couldn't had a recording of him so they do get to The Detour here and they've got two choices one of it's called all doed up the other one is the big picture we know that the old up one is where they have to create some puppets with some arts and crafts being a key component to it and the big picture is an attention to detail where they get these big sort of marals that they've got to look at and then reenact plus get little details right when they go get the props for the specific material that they need to sort of put together based

32:01 Off the clue I would have gone big picture to be honest like because I would have been like I don't know if I want to do the dolls I don't know if I want to create dolls like no exp playing with dolls even just based even based on just the clue itself not knowing what it is okay Yeahs I would think making a doll or getting dressed up like a doll something like that I would think by the clue when I got there you know I do a lot of spot the differences with my daughter and I love them and you know we can do them quite quickly but anything like that big picture was like there was too many details would have taken too long there was so many things you could have got wrong and then you have to get back up and go and find the pieces if I would have chosen that and got there I would left straight away and gone to do up right I it's interesting it's interesting because I feel like I'm really good at attention to detail like that's something that if I was to get there I would spot it so quickly I was amazed at how many people were struggling at big picture and constantly getting it wrong and not I mean later on overthinking even the clothes they were wearing like oh it needs to be the draing and minor things but there were a lot of things in that picture it was like a W's

33:21 Wally picture there was so many sorry that used to be my jam where's Wally I used to love doing those I know but there's so many details that if you've got time to have a look you spot them all but if you're trying to do things quickly it's hard I think when finally I saw how they were putting the dolls together and there wasn't that much to it like it's really if you're good with your hands you can do it and it clearly was the better one I mean Todd and Ashley locked out not being able to get a spot racing like a full on foot slog with Joe and Ian to get to the big picture detour just to miss out to go to do to all do up and then leap frock everybody that's at the big picture like it ended up being the one to miss yeah and it's pretty sad that there were only six spots so you know you can't always do what you want to do yeah I like it when they do that I like it when there is limited spots and it forces you to think about where you need to go and what you need to do next let's have a look here at a few of the comments coming in Logan is saying I doubt we see the Franklin Alliance if it was an hour episode I agree with that Sandy says

34:41 Apparently the average time in the do detour was 15 to 20 minutes while the murial one was one and a half 1 to one and a half hours are you on mute Michelle sorry yeah I push by accent yeah it's too much Det detail too much yeah it looked it looked brutal Logan also says one of the very rare times in The Amazing Race years where almost every team chose the significant harder task it's true almost everyone went for that one and then Sandy says it's wild that Joe and Ian and Todd and Ashley arrived at The Detour at the same time but Todd and Ashley finished the fifth and Jo Ian got eliminated that's the difference but Joe and Ian have been I feel like Joe and Ian struggled throughout the whole season with attention to detail things and like just missing simple things like that was their weakness throughout the season so I wasn't overly shocked to see them not make it what was funny for me with Joe and Ian was when they were at the end there with Liam and yeremy and Liam and yeremy just finished it and they looked at him like what did you guys do differently as if someone is going to help them when it's clearly between you and this team for last plays expecting Liam Andy to just give them a freebie there like they were that you could just you could hear the desperation and voice at that point I know it was so bad it was just so bad and I'm like get out

36:01 Of there I'm glad the girls actually left and went to do the dolls because although they probably would have finished before the guys anyway I don't know they were they were so bad like they had like four things wrong still by the time that they chra yeah what's wrong with that team Michelle like they've got so much potential but it's not working for them at the moment and they did one of your cardinal sins that Chang detour but they changed the two hours in would you call me changing a detour if I actually walked in saw the task and left I bet Logan and M Michael would say yes you changed detours just to say I did but yeah I literally would look at the board and just go the other way like surely do up is not as bad as this like I don't need to do as much yeah there was a lot of running up and down they could only take one prop at a time which slowed them down but I still think a team I still think a team that's really good at attention to detail could have smashed that out I really do think that I think that it could have been done you don't just like there's no chance Chris I'm never doing that challenge no you've been scarred like tell us tell us no but I'm big into attention to detail like displays in my classroom
