The Challenge 39: Episode 9 Review

1:33 Old us getting up there though but yeah it's hot right I'm hoping I made sure to ask you beforehand I go this fan isn't getting picked up on the microphon so yeah even if it did I feel like people would have forgiv you for having a fan going in the background because of it being 100 Dees Fahrenheit over in Sydney and the worst thing of all is it's like after 9:00 p.m. in the evening here for us as well and one thing I have learned because I've lived in New Zealand for the last 15 years if you're new to the channel newly moved to Australia it's a 4-Hour flight but man oh man the weather conditions are very different it's a lot more warmer over here but I've been enjoying it because it's not as humid as what I'm used to over in Oakland which you know I don't mind the dry heat as much people were complaining about humidity this week and I was like what are you talking about like it's nothing compared to where I just came from so I'm okay I'm okay but we're here to talk about the challenge not the weather so let's get into the challenge what did you think of this episode kuna did it hit it out of the park for you was it a solid 11 out of 10 or were you sort of thinking maybe there you know we're grabbing it straws here at certain sections with this episode because that's kind of where I was sitting yeah I think like the multi-stage process was really fascinating thinking that you

2:53 Might have these short sharp like stages but it seems like the if we're going to get 20 what it 22 Episodes probably 21 episodes I don't know like we're going to have some stretchy middle midseason like ones that are like just fer ones you know what I mean and that's I don't think it's the format I'll just put it out there I don't think it's the format I think the format is great I've got no problem with the fact that they've mixed it up this season I applaud them for taking a risk and changing the format of the show I think the one thing that they again possibly didn't do well on is the casting because if you think about it this episode who was carrying the episode I mean we had the very big personality of Colleen pretty much taking Center Stage for this whole episode right and I mean who wouldn't like I mean she's beautiful to look at but yeah do you really want to listen to her I don't know I think the jury's out on that I think the jury's out on that kuna I think I was one of the ones that like they were targeting because it seemed to work for me I really did it pull on your heartstrings a little bit like right not necessarily p my heartstrings more that I was like she really is beautiful she's CLE smart she's very like she's shown no like bad Tendencies or anything in the show she just seems like a really wholesome

4:14 Nice person and I was like she too normal for the show way too normal for the show probably absolutely but like it certainly made me go wow she's just a really nice normal person and yeah like just and we all know that the challenge was built on the backs of very nice and normal people that's how the challenge got to season 39 right yeah I mean I guess when I say it worked on me not necessarily you're right not I feel like you're digging yourself did make me appreciate her a little bit Yeah like as a human being but again like I said you know Colleen as a challenger Colleen had to carry the show and I feel like that to me shows when you've got these players that are playing this season where maybe like if you could understand Colleen in German I feel like she like I can talk to this a little bit because I speak more than one language and for a large portion of my life when English I wasn't as fluent in English growing up as I am now I had to obviously I moved overseas I had to learn to adapt and I got more and more fluent throughout my time living abroad but in South Africa I didn't really I was never forced to speak English to get like you could get everywhere and speak Africans and much you could get helped in South Africa so you're not forced to speak English similar to in Germany where

5:35 Everybody speaks German so why speak English all the time why rely on that to get yourself from point A to point B during your normal day where when you go on to the show and you're struggling to express yourself in a different language like some of these players definitely are and I think colen maybe is finding it the most difficult it's not like I don't understand her it's just taking her brain that little bit more time to process what she's saying where she's going even making mistakes in the confessional this episode where she's like that's not what I meant I didn't mean they were smart were fast because in her mind she is constantly thinking in German and translating into English it takes away from us getting to know colen the real personality and how she would probably be in German she may be a really fun big character when she speaks German but in English I don't think it's translating into this fun character that we all enjoy watching it's very similar to what Nam experienced when he was there I'm sure Nam is one of the most charismatic and funniest people in German but he definitely doesn't translate to that when he speaks English it can go the other way though when you've got someone like Emmanuel and even an Assaf who are multilingual with English as a second language when they are charismatic and very GRE gregarious it comes off as a little bit cringe like that Euro like because they haven't quite nailed the language so you it

6:55 Comes off like what like that's like weird man why what you said it and but it was just not it was like 80% there you kind of didn't quite nail it and you sound funny and weird now ass off's nailing that though the cring trctor I think somewhat Lost in Translation as well like he again he would probably be super cool in Israel I thought you were going to say he's a bit lost than the source because he did get a bit lost than the source this specific episode and we'll talk about the Assaf blow up at some point here in the podcast but let's start it off here in the beginning we'll try and see how on format we stay I mean the conversation can go any direction like everybody knows and I'm sure they love because they keep coming back for more when we when we talk about the episode but very early on here you know Olivia feels in a good place the UK Alliance is fading now she's a little bit worried about Colleen and Raven potentially being on the outside and that sort of sets the stage that Colleen and Raven are potentially going to be to the people that are going to get sort of some heat coming their way in this moment and then there is a very interesting episode or part of the episode I should say here with Michelle showing some compassion for the likes of Melissa who just lost Big T and big te obviously has be has just been lost to Melissa feels like she's all on her own and a lot of

8:15 Talk I mean we could talk about how Michelle swooped in there to sort of console her obviously care about her as a person but let's also think a little bit about Michelle's game in general she's trying to please everybody she's trying to be the center of everything and she feels like she's all this power in the game right now do you think Michelle can ride this wave all the way to the end is this Michelle's season or does all this power at some point blow up a Michelle's face because we know that she is messy at best I mean I was going to say like does it even matter like even if she does get to the end like you've rallied against her athletic prowers in recent Seasons like you've realized that she's not a competitor so even if she can politic and control the game Survivor style and really get through all the way to the end and show that she's kind of a chess you know chessnut Checkers she's pulling the strings she's actually playing the game well it all comes to nothing if you can't do the you know the Run TJ's final you know what I mean like 100% yeah but at least she gets that claim to fame because in TJ's mind if you make a lot of finals you become one of the best to ever play the game so I mean Michelle's working her way up there to get into multiple finals was that a oh we'll get into it a little bit later on I just want to say hello to kiwi skir in the live with the pink hand wave

9:35 Emoji hello kiwi and then also king cooper in the house being a night L pays off for once king cooper let us know whereabouts in the States you are because I believe it's very early in the morning on the Eastern Standard Time it's about 5 just maybe quarter past 5 in the morning or something like that so king cooper well and truly U past your bedtime if you're over in New York for instance but looking at this here you know my corporate my corporate head office is in San Antonio so it's 4 there any chance of going over for a visit La 2 am there you go all right there we go 2 am that's so it's not too bad over there so we actually kind of always forget there's also people from La that watch the show that maybe the time's not too bad for people that are there CU you know if I don't have work the next day I'm with you king cooper I'm very much a night L I love being up late at night and then maybe sleeping in a little bit in the mornings especially on the weekends if I can hopefully you know being late at night and actually exploring the new city that I live in because you know there's so much to see in Melbourne at night time but truly is a city that becomes it sort of really becomes alive at night time when you go into the city here kuna have you ever been to Melbourne I have been to Melbourne I've been a couple times yeah I'm a Sydney guy I don't know like

10:56 Although Sydney when you're talking about nightlife Sydney now is dead like it's completely like the opposite now it's not vibrant it's lost it's charm I would have years ago the Melbourne Sydney rivalry I was always like yeah no dominates but yeah now I can see why although that sort of stuff doesn't really appeal to me anymore so I still love Sydney but you I'm not in it for the NTI anymore but I do understand that it's you got a some you're a family man now kuna different stages in life different stages in life between the two of us but you know let's have a look here at the episode further on we have kylin andasio having a bit of a conversation while training knowing that shots are potentially come going to come their way and then we get a scene that is going to become very big throughout this episode and I kind of forgot about this scene early in the season where Assaf and Melissa had this very genuine conversation about both being parents looking out for each other we have Melissa and Assaf talk talking again this episode about how they've got this Parent Connection obviously every time Melissa's the one who sort of she and I don't know what it was but she felt like that connection was a lot stronger than what it is and obviously Assaf In This Moment is still gaslighting her a little bit saying yeah I'm with you we're both on the outs

12:16 He's playing that mole game that he's been playing the double agent game here and we know that overall this thing is going to blow up because Assaf he really is in this game to win it he is there to make name for himself he's not there to play Melissa's and Melissa's already created a legacy for in the challenge is try to get there yeah I mean I still think like I don't necessarily see the point of the dedicated like targeted thing of Melissa specifically it's not like she's got to like make a move then if you if he's so interested in the game like you know what is he doing what's next and like they're so focused on that but he could have still kept his focus on the game without going back on his word that he very clearly sort of said as a more personal level than just hey let's make a deal like it was like as a mother I think he sort of said my girlfriend my wife at home would kill me if I ever you know targeted another mom in the game and to then like you know there were other you forgot about all those things later on he forgot about all these rules and sort of boundaries that he set for himself to play this game at a later stage but very interesting conversation and then straight after this we get a little bit of Emanuel

13:36 And Ken time talking about their childhood talking about being very poor being from a really bad situation that they had to get themselves out of both of them being Fighters and they have this very genuine deep conversation here that apparently led to some intimate time off camera that we didn't see what like to what does that mean like how I felt like they did it they 100% did it I think that's what that means and that's why she was so hurt obviously yeah and it's understandable because to be honest with you I feel like we may as well talk about it we know the aftermath they go to the club emanuel's flirting with the rest of the girls he's dancing with Olivia he's got Raven around him there I don't know if he's actually hooking up with them to the same degree maybe he did maybe they're just a bit more discreet in regards to that because they don't want it to be public knowledge but clearly you know colen feels a certain type of way about this and Emanuel trying to say the next day well you know I was just hanging around with them the typical guy thing being a bit of a SLE ball in this in this moment I feel like again not doing himself any favors yeah at one point they cut to like him with his hand around Olivia like cuddling and then I think it was the same shot but later on they showed it again

14:56 With a extended wider shot and he's cuddling with Olivia and Raven at the same time like you know what I mean like he's cuddling with both of them at the same time while doing whatever with Colleen while having a girlfriend at home and I think when the all the girls were having their chat session about it didn't Michelle say that he was trying to kiss her as well and well like this guy is throwing it around which I felt really conflicted because the chat that he had with Colleen about coming from poverties Dad skipping out on them we had the one last week where he to like we've seen him go back to Romania and I was like going is this kind of winner like he's getting a lot here and they keep talking about the struggle the fight blah and then he just gets the player like big he's doing Cory stuff in one episode like he's doing a season's worth of Corey in one episode it was full on got the your boy Emanuel moves fast he moves fast in the house of the challenge and obviously he's got a hookup record already on the show he's already hooked up with Michelle as well I believe was it Michelle the One season he was into I believe there was a thing Tori that's the one I'm thinking of like there's been some hookups with Emanuel and he knows how to play the game but you know at the end of the day

16:17 Yeah I mean he's got a girlfriend so that's even worse does he well probably not but coming into the house he had a girlfriend so probably not the greatest thing for him to be doing what he's doing out there and I felt like it didn't look good for him but I mean he wouldn't be the first controversial winner if he did get that winers edit that have done some controversial things on the show to still win so it's not like he would be the first either king cooper you're asking do you think we're ever going to see regular clubs again or just the club they go to could I let you have that one do you think that they'll move back to the regular clubs again no I think they'll keep this it's just so much easier for them to control there's no like fights public they're putting up with no bouncers and security and angry people like they'll just control it they can put cameras wherever they want they can do whatever they want lighting they can make them production-wise they can just say do that dance again do whatever they want they can control it completely so they'll keep this forever I think it's worth for them so that they'll yeah get a bit weird when they get towards the end of the season there's like a couple of them yeah 100% yeah I think you're right on that one daily challenge what did you think of the daily challenge the three different categories here with the teams being split into Duos and then obviously who would have known the team with the extra

17:37 Number ultimately coming out on top having a bit of an advantage throughout this did we learn anything through this Challenge and what did you think of it as a whole I think I didn't like the segmented like knockout play like we've talked so much about how I'm starting to almost actively dislike some of the challenges on Survivor and this had such Survivor Vibes as far as like the puzzles the non-physical I guess pulling the sled was really difficult but you know what I mean like the segmented it was very difficult for the yeah absolutely so I guess that was harder than most stuff we see on Survivor but it just felt like you're you're trimming away all your contestants to keep it smaller and I don't know like puzzle at the end I have this thing right when I'm watching TV I have three kids and I have a wife and I get distracted very easily I probably have whatever adult version of ADHD that's completely undiagnosed right but because I know that I do a podcast and I want to be prepared when I can I'll pause and stop something and go back and make sure I watch The Challenge again even though the kids were screaming and my wife asked me something or whatever right I think it says a lot about this challenge or this daily

18:57 In that I had to do that multiple times and like I'm just so easily lost from it I didn't pay attention to certain bits I was like oh what happened now it doesn't matter like it didn't keep me as much as like even just from the we're so used to seeing the big spectacle last week's elimination didn't really work out that great but at least the tower and stuff and the bricks and throwing stuff around was so what the challenge is this one felt a little bit more Survivor yeah can tone down and yet Survivor is the cast or I almost said the cast members that are from Survivor in some ways are the ones that struggled the most we had Michelle go out in the first round because they kept getting sabotaged by Emanuel and burner which I absolutely loved seeing Michelle getting a bit frustrated who's doing it bro like who's taking random pairing of and bur again yeah so that was that completely random obviously completely random for raasio andus to be paid together even she even narus threw a little bit of shade at that pairing like TJ yeah exactly she's like oh you know did you hear anything in the house about what's happening and that's why you've paired us up together but yeah a lot of fun that first one I like the challenge because it was speed to run back and forth kind of like a relay race you could sabotage and take a pole from the other

20:17 One I thought that was a good spectacle not surprised to see Zara dominate in that one I do think this kind of showed us as well that aaf could be dangerous his cardio was good he was doing good at multiple different things like say what you want about Assaf the character doesn't take away from his potential athletic ability if it comes down to maybe running a final maybe doing something that there's multiple sort of steps involved in it the endurance is yet to be tested but again explosiveness yeah explosiveness definitely there when it comes to it and a good first win they do choose Raven Zara and Assaf they do choose here in this moment to eliminate James Melissa and thenen and Ed is completely okay with it trying to keep it under wraps that Ed does work with them and he was like trying to play the middle ground here because not everybody knows that he's working with Team us at the stage but then we go into round two round two is the one where they do have to move the sleds the thing that stood out the most for me yeah how stupid it is how stupid is it that they don't Target the team with three people h like that's insane like this is so much easier especially since it had both yeah like I understand like it should have

21:37 Been the easiest choice Under the Sun for them to do it because Assaf officially isn't connected to any of them so it wouldn't raise suspicion and then Zara and Raven is at the bottom of the picking order when it comes to the girls in that Alliance as well so no one would have had blood on their hands but I feel like everybody like you said earlier had such a raise a focus on Melissa anyone but Melissa just can't get to the next round we need to get Melissa out that the focus was more on that or kand and Emanuel is clearly playing his own game out there as well targeting kand for a reason targeting aaso in that first one as well a little bit trying to get some payback on people that threw him into the arena so I understand where it came from him but the rest of the team I don't know what was going on in that moment and maybe people were afraid to show their cards so early in the season I don't know or mid-season already so it's not even that early it's my brain's hurting ker I don't know how these people are playing and why they didn't Target the team with three people because I'm guess when it came to moving the sled they had to win that because they had the extra power to pull yeah exactly maybe they thought like it's definitely going to be a guys week right yes and we spoke about that last week did the production team listen to me like maybe they time traveled into the future quickly checked on the nullified takes

22:58 Take about never following through with a bluff and then they went back in time to actually make it happen like I feel like they finally did it because normally the Bluffs don't actually account to anything that's a TNT take that's a TT time travel telling you it's a thing man it's a thing yeah so I reckon maybe they assumed it was going to be a man and Assaf is a like he's okay they like him he's not going to be a targeted guy so they're not going to go after them so maybe that was what it was but yeah they I think they definitely assumed guys I assumed guys weak you know what I mean so I was I was absolutely flawed when they actually changed it up I was honestly flawed because I've never seen it there's always the threats there's never the follow through so it was really good after watching this and complaining about it for a few seasons now to finally see a follow through I'm very proud of TJ and the produ the week after you called it out too man Chris is on the pulse man he's like sees it all yeah he sees the Matrix code can you look at the camera and say this to Chris and Niki who always comes here to bash my takes you know look them straight in the eye and be like Chris Nikki Chris has got it he's on it at least for this one they won't agree with any of the other things that we say but what do they say AO a broken clock's right

24:18 Right twice a day yeah even a broken clock is right twice a day 100% there now as they go to the second one we actually kind of miss this Melissa goes to Assaf and begs him basically to protect her and he in the moment says of course of course I've got you know don't worry about it gives another promise there in that moment but the sleds again as safan Zara and Raven they win that they then choose to go up against Emanuel and burner I think they probably noticed that burner was having some difficulty running and maybe they saw that as a weakness that they would have to struggle with in the final but the final is pretty straightforward they get this long pole with a hook they got to grab some puzzle pieces and bold a cube a very basic puzzle but a puzzle that Assaf is so proud and completing that he has to do four back flips and do one of the fessy kind of celebrations but I feel like he went fessy times four on the on the celebration right and they cut to KY which I just realized right now they cut to kylin going it's a five piece puzzle he's acting like he won the Oscar or something and yeah I just realized like oh yeah that's funny and then I realized like they obviously do those afterward afterwards after what's coming up we're going to talk about so kylin has this very snarky take on his celebration which I think is funny in

25:38 Retrospect and Colin obviously someone that is good at puzzles and numbers and it's kind of his thing right but they win this and then Assaf takes a massive step back tries to get the blood off his hands kind of a smart move I guess in certain ways but not helping Melissa and this moment because Raven She Wants Revenge because you know who would have known that throwing a glass of wine in Raven's face would be the end of Melissa's game it would be the thing that would send her into the elimination and you kind of have to look at this and some people might say you know why did Raven and they may even hate on Raven for going so hard at Melissa but people need to remember Raven did not start this war but oh hell did she finish it she finished this War I kind of liked how like Z Zaza was like I mean she kind of has a point like she threw a drink she's like yeah I get it like I do the same thing and I was like yeah you're right like I even though she's your thing I'm like what am I going to say to her like what could you possibly undo from someone who had a drink thrown in their face they are going to be just completely focused on Revenge like you know they're going to want it bad like what canaro possibly do yeah I agree 100% And with Assaf not backing her up

26:58 It was a stalemate so she ends up bending cuz you know not coming to a decision can even mean that those two girls end up being in danger like we know it's not unheard of for the challenge to do something like that so they do end up going for Melissa and as soon as the name is called kylin takes real offense to this and goes full white night on Assaf here steps in front of Melissa and says you know something about if your mother watches this she's going to be very disappointed in this and Assaf heard his mother's name and all hell breaks loose Because he believes that kin is taking a stab at his mother and doesn't understand that it's actually a stab at his character instead of assaf's mother in this moment I don't even think it he mentioned his no he was saying you swau her as a mother oh is that what he said okay it was one of the communication issues that like yeah the ass was like you talking about my mother and he's like he's like no I'm talking about you said you wouldn't go against her as a mother like that was their like a fellow parent yeah and he heard my mother what and suddenly like this you know CT Assaf I don't know what we call him AF came out and went full Super Saiyan mode in this moment and

28:18 It was like he had an extra couple of protein bars prior to maybe a little bit too much pre-workout going into this daily and suddenly wanted to go cups here with kin in this moment very animated up he's got adrenaline curs causing through his veins he just wanted his you know his first daily he's all hyped up man he's ready to go yeah and I thought man like kyin handled this pretty good he was pretty calm throughout all of this while Asaf was losing his mind Burna came over to calm Assaf down she's the one that like do you realize that we've gotten this far in the season where now bernna is becoming like she's looking like one of the most normal people on the show when she was like f boogie in the beginning to steal one of Jeff's phrases from Survivor and now everybody else is yeah she's probably still stayed there but people have just so far surpassed the burner craziness level in the weirdness yeah this is how much burner is coming back to normal is that this episode was not a burner ass episode it was a Mariah like it was back to Mariah's cheeks cakes away for burn passing it over she that's how normal she is now no like deliberate wedgies nothing like that going on we need to see burner run a final cuz I believe that the cheeks will be back

29:38 Out if she's in that final run I believe it will happen make it happen Invision you know what at the start of the episode you said who carried this episode Colleen and I was like stuck for a second for my answer because I was going to say Mariah like on in front of the pool with Olivia like that was this and then obviously the controversy at the end but when you went Colleen I went oh yeah Colleen Richard knows what we're talking about Richard knows exactly what we're talking about he's pretending like he doesn't my boy celo Richard probably butchered your first name there all the way from South Africa you know also one of our podcast this year for survivors of Africa # reviv of Africa survivors of Africa save Sur Africa because it's currently on a i hattis and we're hoping that it's going to come back if you want to support another reality TV show that you probably don't watch but we will appreciate it go check the community tab we've got a poll up or I guess a not a poll what do you call it one of those petitions up to try and save it and get it back on air because it is a great franchise worth saving but who knows maybe we even get some survivors sou Africans in the future play The Challenge I still feel like there's a few Survivor South African players that would be more entertaining than some of the players that we currently have on the show

30:59 Just saying Africa would make a great like why aren't they going there the language barrier isn't as bad like yeah hash not if they've there's there were the only one that I know of is that there were talks at one point between a previous winner and Survivor South Africa which I don't know if I want to mention the name here who would have been a great addition to the show because they're physically very capable record holder for most immunities tied worldwide of any Survivor franchise and also Master strategist that was very close to getting onto the show so there's always a chance there's always a chance of the chats have happened before you never know how far can go in the future but let's talk a little bit about you know going back to the house here Zara explains why she had to back Raven and she mentions it to Michelle and Olivia nus kind of for nothing episode we spoke about the club what else was happening in the club Olivia gring and Emanuel yeah I mean and also then Thea Melissa conversation and then Mida kind of taking a stab at assaf's IQ saying that Vienna her daughter has a higher IQ than Assaf because he still just doesn't get that he betrayed her because he's because I feel like Isa is trying to be Noble in this moment

33:39 Long resume yeah long May's rain live is all I'm going to say I am looking for more Corey villain this season I know people are going to hate it that I'm saying it but I want see of 12 dates of Christmas they make the worst villains in reality TV show yeah for sure a lot of you know Mariah and James content that I really have to be honest I just don't care for I just it's a it's a weird relationship am Mar is doing weird stuff this season she came in with it was a silver platter given to her Alliance given to her based of Bas based on the back of what bananas has achieved like I'm not saying CU I also don't think like poor bananas in this situation do people realize what bananas well allegedly did to his previous relationship apparently he cheated so you know sometimes this is what it feels like bananas this is what it feels like yeah and I think knowing bananas and you know I don't think they were like together like that was the thing is that like we never said that where like you know we were hanging out monog yeah we were kicking situ ship yeah they were kicking it
